We visited Zama on a Saturday evening before a concert at Petco. We arrived shortly after the 5pm opening for a 5:15 reservation, and were one of the first parties seated indoors after getting through a short queue. The hostess seemed to be working quickly , and I saw some confusion arise as she directed people to a table without actually being walked over. Our waitress Solange was wonderful, and she greeted us soon after sitting. We got our first round of drinks and appetizer quickly, and we put in our entrees early as well. We opted for sushi but decided not to over-order for the possibility of dessert. By about 5:45; we decided to order a second round of drinks and sashimi instead of dessert. It was at this time, everything started to fall apart. We suddenly noticed that every table in the restaurant was full, and it got loud. Bussers and waiters were rushing out of the kitchen, plates were being brought to the wrong tables. Two tables over, one half of a couple didn't get her entree at all. After 15 min, we had gotten our drinks but no sashimi. Our waitress noticed our issue (and the adjacent one) and went to look into it. More plates came rushing out of the kitchen, everyone seemed very stressed. Another 20 min passed, no sashimi. Finally Solange offered to cancel if we didn't want to wait any further, and we did. We paid and left by 6:20pm. During the time we waited, we noticed that the first two tables that had been sat had finished, and their plates bussed. The manager came out of the kitchen and seemed annoyed that these two tables hadn't been re-sat, and he gestured to the hostess to seat more people. This is clearly a managerial issue, not a staff issue. The kitchen and bar were completely backed up in less than an hour from opening because too many reservations had been filled in that first seating. Staff seemed overwhelmed. It's a shame - everything tasted great, but we left very disappointed that things fell apart on the latter half of the meal.

The interior is definitely the highlight of this place -- beautiful, stylish, and very unique. The presentation of the dishes was also impressive. Unfortunately, the food itself was disappointing. We tried several different dishes, and almost everything was surprisingly bland and lacked flavor. Everything looked much better than it tasted. It's a nice place visually and definitely has an atmosphere, but food is still the most important part of a restaurant experience for me. Based on the food alone, I don't think I would come back.

Decor wise, this place is a straight up vibe. Food wise, it's kind of limited and just okay. The food was okay, but it's expensive and the portions are small. The service was super mid. They brought out everyone's food out at a different time which is crazy because the restaurant was empty. Two of our party ordered sushi rolls and one came out immediately and the other was last. Pretty much everyone was done by the time it came. I ordered the cauliflower which was really good, but $36 for a head of cauliflower is insane. It's was a good experience but I would not go back. Too expensive, small portions, and mediocre service.

Zama is a fun vibe! The restaurant is decorated nicely and is a great place for celebrating. The food was okay, but they went above and beyond to make our bachelorette dinner special. The personalized menus & sparklers were so fun!

I would've loved to give this place a 5 but I'm giving it a 4 based on personal preference to be fair. The ambiance is really dope. It feels like you walked right into a jungle with tables and a bar. lol. 10/10 for decor and atmosphere. The customer service is really good too. Drinks were okay. Nothing to brag about. However, the lamb chops I had were fire. The branzino was also good but they had some ube flavored purè on the side that seemed as tho it should not have been there. The braised short ribs were also really good. Now here's where the 4-star rating comes from. It is extremely loud. At least for the night we went. They was a man walking around playing a tumbadora (Congo drum) and the music got really loud which made it hard to talk to one another. We were not fans, because at that point it felt more like a club than a restaurant. However, if that is your thing, this is a 5-star experience for sure.

We celebrated a birthday dinner here, and a great time. One of the few restaurants that stay open later. The food was impressive. Every single sushi roll was delicious, as well as the lamb chops. The bar had every cocktail possible. Service was alright, but they were busy so understandable. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a nice dinner out in SD.

I was here for an early dinner, mainly due to the social media aesthetics of the place. As we were here early, the place was pretty empty. We chose to sit outside, which was a great choice because there was a very strong toilet/funky smell inside. Taking off one star for the off putting smell. The service was nice, the menu had lots of fusion options. We got a little bit a lot of appetizers and split a main. Everything tasted great, it also looked great. The drinks were also delicious. I'd come here back for happy hour for a few drinks.

The ambiance is very cool, jungle vibes and great music in there. We went on a Thursday when the Padres are in town, so parking was challenging but we found parking a few blocks away. Just be aware of the streets being closed for events before booking! My mistake. The food was overall delicious, but the timing of service was weirdly paced. Drinks didn't get refilled for a long time, they tried to take our menus away when we hadn't ordered mains yet, etc. The best thing was the Latin Chicken for sure. They ran out of desserts and it wasn't a super busy night.

Hmmm this place you come to basically just for IG posts and hype. The food is mid. I asked for a new york steak medium rare and it came out medium. (I knew this would happen based on the vibe of the place, and I wanted medium not medium well, so this was a good move lmao). The service is good. The vibe is very loud and clubby. Like every hour a dude with a drum comes around and drums lol. Food is nothing special. Steak didn't have much flavor. It needed like a sauce or something. Or just a better seasoning. I also ordered the street corn/mushrooms. These were tasty up until I found a black hair in my food. Definitely wasn't mine because I'm blonde. Grossed me out a bit but I was on a table with 10 other people and didn't want to make it a big deal. I would not come here again. It's a one and done for me.

I came here to try out the Happy Hour, since it has a pretty impressive HH lineup. I started the meal with a Zama Sangria, which I loved! We also ordered - Spicy Tuna Roll - This was good Calamari - Squid was tender and crisp Bison Burger - I was hesitant at first since I've never had bison, but this was surprisingly juicy and delicious! Truffle Fries - Not a lot of truffle flavoring on the fries as I hoped. I didn't know that the burger also had fries, so in hindsight, I should've ordered just the burger. I didn't order the Nigiri or Sashimi as it looked pricey to me for happy hour. Staff were friendly and helpful with explaining the menu. The decor is fun, with the tropical, dark, moody ambiance. I've been here for restaurant week and for dinner but I forgot to drop a review when I went! I definitely would come back again to try other HH items.

Such a VIBE and so fun! Perfect spot for my gf's birthday for a party of 10! The rolls and drinks were all delish. I got the hot pink roll which wasn't as cute and photogenic as everyone else's roll but I think it was the best tasting one. The place is picture perfect for IG and the service was great. Would definitely come back, especially since I felt like I was in Vegas because at one point they gave everyone in the restaurant a sparkler and turned down the lights...what an awesome experience!

We ventured to Flama Llama, delighted by the wonderful atmosphere and friendly service. What I was not mentally prepared for was the most enlightening culinary venture that I would ever undergo. Flama Llama provided for my companion and I both a satisfying afternoon meal, and perhaps the most poignant dining experience I have enjoyed thus far in my life. The meat was tender and juicy. The vegetables more flavorful than I ever thought possible. The noodles seasoned to perfection. The chicha morada subtly sweet and divinely slaking. And the sauce -- the sauce was orgasmic. I used to not believe those who claimed that good food tells a story. Before this meal I was blind, but now I see the truth. Tension, melancholy, tenacity, and elation. So rich in intensity and meaning. To descibe in human tongue this meal that transcends language would be a disservice to its biblical splendor. I can only in good faith describe the effect that it had on me. I have never cleaned my plate like I did in this restaurant. I have never performed with such steadfast resolve. I have never been turned into a beast of a man and immediately satiated by such postprandial bliss. I was a mad, esurient dog, and Flama Llama's cuisine a gentle hand guiding me to fulfillment. How the sweet meal sang to me, beckoning me into this nirvana like Saint Peter at the pearly gates. This world is a savage one, but the food at Flama Llama has reminded me that no matter how crestfallen, no matter how mired in anguish we as humans have become, beauty endures. I am, in all likelihood, Flama Llama's #1 fan. Still, I wish I knew enough about cooking or creation of any kind so that I could appreciate it more. I wish I had it in me to become so skilled at preparing food that I could develop something even remotely close to this. And while I have my eye on other endeavors, I will never stop being inspired by Flama Llama. Such artistry I will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. I can only hope that one day I will be responsible for something that touches someone as deeply as this food has touched me. An incredible experience if ever one there was. I may no longer seek love from a human companion because I have found everything I need at this establishment. I do not say this lightly: Flama Llama has changed the course of my life forever. afterwards we went to costco and got a hotdog and it was pretty good too

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.

The other day, I got the tri tip sandwich with chimichurri. The order came up quickly. I live a couple of blocks away. By the time I was home, the sandwich was cold. Not lukewarm, not tepid, but cold. But the REALLY disturbing thing was the bun/bread. It fell apart, into large chunks, the minute I opened the paper wrap up. A sandwich has two major components, BREAD and the filler. Can't you have decent fresh bread? This seems to be a challenge lately for the Grand Ole BBQ. A couple of months ago, I got the hot links, and they were served on the most run of the mill, grocery store quality, HAMBURGER bun. LINKS, folks, should be on a hot dog shaped bun, not cut up into small pieces and placed on a cheap, round, bun. I can't decide if this is hipsters, serving food and doing it their way, with whatever happens to be available at the moment, or if this is management saying "we don't care about your expectations." It isn't novel, to put links on a hamburger bun, it doesn't make it artsy, or unique, it makes it look like an afterthought. So does try-tip on a bun that wasn't. And the chimichurri- driest, almost oil-free chimichurri I've ever had, I had to add oil, at home, to be able to spread it. Good chimichurri isn't difficult, I make it all of the time. Make an effort people. Restaurant are closing. Disregarding your customer is one quicker way to meet that end.

I visit Havana Grill whenever I want some tasty oxtail.  I noticed oxtail was one of the specials.  Last time I visited the oxtail was on the regular menu and you could order it anytime. Oxtail was extremely tender and juicy.  The mix of beef flavor and the spices in the sauce were delicious.  This is my favorite oxtail dish in town. French fries were crisp and had a delicious fried flavor.  The oil was fresh and there was no aftertaste.  Excellent fries. Pineapple upside down cake was dense and did not have a fresh baked aura.  The outside part was starting to harden like it was getting stale so I guess it was baked at least a day ago.  Cake had a mostly mild flavor.  I didn't taste the pineapple though the top was lined with it.  I did taste a ton of ginger flavor.  It appears pieces of ginger were mixed in with the pineapple.  I love ginger as part of soy/ginger seasoning for fish but not in a cake.  This is one of the worst pineapple upside down cakes I have had.  My favorite is at Roy's where you have to give them 30 minute notice and they bake it to order.  Roy's version was piping hot out of the oven, was moist and fluffy, with amazing pineapple flavor. Staff provided fast and friendly service.

Black beans - 5/5, I don't love beans like that but these are seasoned WELL! I could easily eat a whole plate of just these beans and rice. Pollo Fricase - 3/5, the chicken is SOOO tender!!! Literally falls right off the bone, but I wasn't expecting the sauce to be so oily. I thought it was going to be a tomato wine sauce, since the menu said those were the main ingredients. Overall, it was good, but I don't like oily foods so I would order a different entree else next time. Roasted veggies - 5/5, nice assorted of veggies! I wanted more fiber with my dinner Plantain chips - 5/5, seasoned well and perfectly crispy! 3 Empanadas - 4/5, the braised beef was definitely the best flavor. The picadillo was good, but wish I had more olive or raisin in the filling. I'd pass on the Lechon, didn't find any yucca pieces and it was pretty bland in comparison to the other two.

I can only speak about my dish as I didn't have a taste of the other meal. I had the El Vainero (sweet corn pancake with Mano cheese, shredded beef, black beans and plantains). The flavors were so amazing together. You will just have to try it. I also ordered yuca fries. The three types of "sauces" were mild, medium, and hot. All three were tasty in their own way and I enjoyed all of them with the yuca fries and towards the end of my meal, it added a little kick to my dish. As for beverages, we had water and I ordered the hot chocolate. I know, hot chocolate, but it was so good. I love an authentic cup of hot chocolate with a bit of real whip cream and some cinnamon. In all, our experience at Encuentro Cafe was great from the service to the food. It is very intimate and we ate in the covered patio. It was as it would be eating outside with tropical decor. Not crowded and noise level as it would be eating in an enclosed patio, not too noisy with the sounds of Old Town patrons walking/driving down the street. I will definitely look forward to visiting this restaurant again when I visit San Diego.

Our server took our drink and food order, and everything seemed great up until that point. Then we realized she had forgotten to put in our drink order. When she finally brought my drink, it was the wrong one. When our food arrived, my order was incomplete my extra bacon was missing. So I ended up watching my wife eat her meal while I waited. My food finally came out right before she finished eating. After we finished, our server eventually made her way back to the table. I asked about the military discount, and she nodded and said they offered one. When she brought the check, the discount hadn't been applied, so I had to ask again. Between the mistakes with our order and what I could see and hear happening at some of her other tables, I'm guessing she was either brand new or just having an extremely rough day. We've all been there, so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. That said, we're definitely excited to come back and give this place another try because it has so much to offer! Hopefully, we catch our server on a better day next time. If the service had matched the food and atmosphere, this would have been a 5 review all day long!!

AMBIANCE Parking: Liberty Station parking--pretty manageable but can get busy during peak hours. Seating: Shared seating throughout the public market, so it might take a minute to find a table. Vibes: Welcome to Liberty Station! A festive area pretty much throughout the week. Whether its a place to eat, partaking in a event, or just hanging out - this is your spot. The area itself is a lively food hall energy with. It's not a sit-down restaurant vibe, but more of a grab-your-food-and-find-a-seat kind of experience. A lot of options around, but this spot holds its own with bold Peruvian flavors. FOOD / DRINKS Pesto (Tallarinines Verde) Chicken (Recommend) Solid dish. Rich portion - huge piece of chicken and good amount of pasta mixed well with that herb-forward pesto sauce (Tallarinines Verde) - with a more creamy + umami-forward than your usual pesto It's a bit of a fusion take compared to traditional Peruvian dishes, but still flavorful and satisfying. Good portion and definitely filling. Chicha Morada (Recommend) Refreshing and smooth. Slightly sweet with those subtle spice notes (like cinnamon/clove vibes), which makes it a perfect balance to the savory food. A classic Peruvian drink and a must-try if it's your first time. SERVICE Quick and efficient--typical of a market-style setup. You order, grab your food, and go. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Good selections, delicious food, and steady vibes. Good spot for casual Peruvian food while exploring Liberty Station. It leans more quick-service + accessible rather than a full sit-down experience, but the flavors still come through. The chicha morada is a must, and the pesto chicken is a solid pick if you want something filling. Best wishes to Chefs - Fredy, Tony, and the rest of the Latin Chef team! TIPS * Great option if you want to try Peruvian flavors without committing to a full restaurant

The seating can be a little tough during peak hours but there were some bar seats in front of the Latin Chef. I ordered the lomo saltado and tallarines saltado de res. Both dishes were pretty salty and overpowered the rest of the flavors in the dish. Unfortunately, the portion for the proteins were pretty sparse too given the price. Overall, it was an okay spot but didn't feel authentic.
