Returned here to create an updated review after almost 7 years and finally got to dine here properly! I met up with my friend and her husband and we ordered different kinds of sushi. We came here during happy hour and they have the roll that I wanted to try which is the Shibuya Nights and I must say that the pairing of salmon and lemon is one of the best when it comes to sushi for me. So, I truly enjoyed the roll that I ordered very much. My friend and I shared a cherry blossom tiramisu for dessert and personally found it wayyyy too sweet so we tapped a lot of sugar off the first layer of the dessert. It made it taste way more tolerable. Despite of that, this place still deserves 5 stars for its ambiance, kind staff, and amazing happy hour options. Looking forward to come back! read more

A modern japanese menu with an urban pop culture decor and a beautiful central bar, Cloak and Petal provides a fun relaxed experience perfect for groups. The front of the restaurant is somewhat plain during the day but once you step in the door you're struck by one of the prettiest bar setups you've ever seen. It's a stunning piece of function and decor with the cherry blossom trees lite from the ceiling. For being in little Italy the place is really spacious. The tables have ample room from each other and the staff are very attentive. I don't think our water glasses ever got more than half empty and the finished plates were taken away almost immediately. They did a great job keeping the place clean and making sure everyone was taken care of. The food was pretty good. The takoyaki was nice and creamy but not overwhelming. The Notorious P.I.G. Roll was delicious with the sauces and even bacon on top, recommended. Everything was fresh and came pretty quickly. Because it's little Italy, get ready for lots of foot traffic getting there and of course parking is always an issue to plan ahead. I stopped by before my flight as I found this restaurant had a great happy hour special before my flight. However while I thought I would not spend as much, I ended up spending a lot more than I would've liked. First, I asked for replacement for blue crab instead of imitation crab, this ended up costing the roll an up-charge of $6 which was information not provided to me when I was ordering. And on top of it, when I placed an extra order of edamame, I placed it right before 6pm, however the server did not tell me despite I pointed to the edamame on the HH menu. I just felt she was trying to deceive me and trying to up-charge more. However the roll I got was a good size, and my miso soup was good as well. We joined up with a group for Happy Hour at around 4pm on a Friday. They had few cocktails on the HH list along with quite a few apps. We started with salted Edamame which was pretty perfect and followed up with the spiced ribs, bao, and various sushi options. The pork bao was my favorite. I also enjoyed the Japanese mule cocktail which is a riff of the Moscow Mule. Our server was very accommodating of the increasing size of our party. We had a reservation at another restaurant down the street but unfortunately we couldn't get in because due to some miscommunication with the reservation so we walked into this place unplanned without a reservation. It was a friday, around 6:30 so we were able sit at the bar since it was just the two of us, right in front of the cherry blossom trees which was amazing! We didn't really want to eat dinner dinner, but just snack and drinks. We ordered the Lychee Sakura, Kiwi Fu and Shiso peachy for drinks and they were all so delicious! Cloak and Petal was not a great experience for us. We went on a weekend evening. Had a little bit of a wait to get in no big deal we walked around the area. Once we were sat the service was okay. I'd heard plenty about Cloak & Petal before finally making my way in, and I'm happy to report it more than delivered. For a first visit, this place made an immediate impression. I started at the long, striking bar, which is reason enough to pause before you even look at the menu. Brandy took excellent care of me from the moment I sat down. She was attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming without ever overdoing it. Also worth noting: the mocktails here are outstanding. Far too many restaurants still treat spirit-free drinks like a box to check, but that was clearly not the case here. These were thoughtful, balanced, and crafted with the same care you'd hope to see across the rest of the menu. And then came the standout: the 10-piece Ninja Mix. This was, without exaggeration, one of the most memorable sashimi plates I've had. I've eaten sashimi in plenty of places, and what set this apart wasn't just the quality of the fish, though that was excellent. It was the orchestration. Every element on the plate felt considered. The caviar, the wasabi, the accompaniments, the presentation, the balance of texture and flavor--nothing felt random, and nothing was there just for show. It was a beautifully composed plate that reflected real precision and care. That's the difference between a good sashimi dish and one that stays with you. This one had both technical quality and aesthetic sensibility. It felt curated, not assembled. Cloak & Petal absolutely delivered on atmosphere, service, and execution. If you love sushi and good vibes, you will love this lively and aesthetically eye pleasing place. You walk in and your eyes immediately go to the gorgeous tree full of cherry Blossoms covering the main bar. I went several times and let's talk about it On the weekends Fri and Sat, this is a happening place so either make a reservation or hope bar seating is open. Happy hour during later in the week can also be busy. They have a great happy hour, so if you want to try some of their cocktails and rolls before committing, happy hour is a must. Happy hour prices for cocktails, food and some specialty rolls are about $13. This is a great deal since most sushi rolls will run $16-25 and cocktails $16-20. At regular menu price, I believe the prices are on point for what you get, which is delicious sushi, yummy cocktails, immaculate vibes and eye pleasing decor. All the rolls we ordered I would rate 9-10. I also want to say I am a newbie to sushi, but my hubby is a sushi expert (according to him lol). Heard so many great things about this place- Made a reservation and was promptly seated. This place is very club-vibe, loud dance music, high energy. We got two drinks, one with gin/elderflower and the other the Lychee Sakura (which was the favorite). The drinks didn't blow us away but they were good. Now the crispy tuna spicy rice was insane. I am a HUGE fan of this dish and this place is easily my top 2 I've ever had- i'm dreaming about it still. The rolls we got were Tokyo Gangster & Sicario Roll. They are very fresh tasting, but the pepper and certain flavors really overpower the fish, the shrimp tempura had the texture of asparagus, pretty crunchy. They were just OK but they are large rolls. We were celebrating and they brought us out two delicious shots with banana, pineapple, and other liquors with sparklers and they put on themed music! it was all very fun! Our love for sushi took us to The Little Italy Neighborhood of San Diego. The name of the restaurant or the frontage gave no hint of a Japanese eatery featuring the sushi rice which is seasoned with vinegar, salt and sugar, and commonly topped with high quality raw, fish, seaweed and vegetables. Truly a magical feeling when we entered inside! Dimly lit. A large oval bar with an immense selection of sake greeted us. As we continued to walk, purple trees met us on the other side of the bar. Super vibey spot with a killer playlist. Nothing I appreciate more than great jams to set the mood for the night. This was our first bar after dinner on a Saturday. The bartenders and servers were very friendly, they seemed happy to work there, which makes a huge difference when it comes to guest's experience. My friends had beer and cocktails, I opted for Karaage which I thoroughly enjoyed without snapping a photo. It was crisp, hot and juicy and so well seasoned it didn't need the dipping sauce. The decor is interesting with a mix of Christmasy, Japanese culture angry art and cozy velvet seating. I dig the menu with enough variety to please everyone. The only minus star was for the water sensor in the bathroom. I struggled to get the water to turn on so I was in there longer than I'd like but I did see a gorgeous girl whom I did get to chat with so it wasn't completely bad. The vibe was still nice, but the cocktail menu didn't quite match the price point for me. The visit became uncomfortable when a man approached us at the bar offering drinks from a sake mannequin, mentioning his friend was the manager. When I asked what was in the drink -- out of basic caution -- he responded with a facetious joke about it being roofied. While I don't believe there was bad intent, the lack of awareness around drink safety took away from the experience. We finished our cocktails and left shortly after. I was hesitant to leave this review, but felt it was important to share in the spirit of awareness and consideration. Great ambiance overall, but this visit didn't fully meet expectations. read more

I told my friend I want to go watch a place that has good food and even better vibes. Since she lives in SD I know she wasn't going to have us at no low vibrational restaurant. So, here we are at Cloak & Petal. We walk in and I'm immediately feeling the music West Coast rap for the win. We were greeted and sat at the bar. The first thing I notice is the beautiful cherry blossom tree indoors. The decor a is nice and energy is positive. I ordered to drink was Tora which is a rice beer and let me tell you it is so good and refreshing. I also ordered for dinner the spicy garlic noodles. I kept it vegan and opted for no other protein other than tofu. The noodles were absolutely delicious. The noodles seemed more like ramen noodles, however they are not you average goalie noodles. They are chocked full of veggies and is very satisfying. They do have a kick yet I highly recommend. For dessert I ordered the Matcha Creme brûlée. Omg!!! It was so delicious, creamy and refreshing with a hint of vanilla bean. It was also topped with an edible flower and blackberries. My only complaint was that it was SUPER LOUD in the restaurant. Like club DJ level loud. You have to yell to be heard by the people at your table. Parking can be a nightmare and we definitely overpaid but i expected that since it's Little Italy. We had several sushi rolls, and they had some unique ones like the Notorious PIG that had bacon on top, which was one of my favorites. We tried the Tokyo Gangster with the wagyu but it seemed to be lacking in flavor a bit. One of our other favorites was the yuko onna, which was fresh and a bit citrusy. I really liked the spicy tuna crispy rice as well, the flavor was good and it had a sauce on the plate that was tasty and a bit sweet. It wasnt too spicy. If you are looking for spicy the Kamikaze roll will fit the bill, but it's pretty hot because of the serrano, some thing it was a bit too hot. I had they're specialty slushie that was very similar to a pina colada and very good, and it's not too strong. Honestly, the reservation wasn't necessary because the restaurant wasn't busy at all and there were plenty of open seats. The hostess was amazing and attentive, and the space itself is aesthetically very pleasing. As for the food, unfortunately, it was mostly subpar. We ordered the Spicy Garlic Godzilla Wings, Spicy Garlic Noodles, Pork Belly Kakuni, Mass Appeal, and Cesar Chavez, along with three tea ceremony shooters (one of each). The Spicy Garlic Noodles were not very garlicky. The Godzilla Wings were okay--tender but nothing special. The Pork Belly Kakuni was my favorite--very flavorful and well-prepared. The Mass Appeal didn't taste fresh and didn't feel worth the price, especially for the small portion. The Cesar Chavez was just okay (I only tried one bite, so limited input). The shooters were actually really good--very refreshing. We also ordered dessert for the birthday celebration. There may have been some miscommunication, as we thought the dessert would be complimentary, but it wasn't. Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind if you're celebrating a special occasion. Overall, most of the dishes were unsatisfying, and the price point does not match the quality. While the service and ambiance were great, I wouldn't recommend Cloak + Petal for the food. read more

Drinks included a non-alcoholic Sapporo and two signature cocktails. Everything was flavorful and well-prepared. Loved the food, service, and the beautiful cherry blossom tree -- perfect for photos. Only downsides: a joking comment about the wings led to an extra order we didn't intend to place, and the music was very loud, making conversation difficult.
