The Newark Penn Station options are limited, but for a healthy meal that seems freshly prepared, Zaro's was a good choice. The service was good and the server helped me pick an entree then helped me decide on sauces too. I ended up with the Freshens Meatless Mexican Rice Bowl which was vegetarian, but with plenty of protein, and definitely fresh and well seasoned. First off this bakery is in Newark Penn station, a destination that has the atmosphere, maintenance, and smell of a porta-potty 24/7. Legitimately, if you had the runs, you've experienced all of this train station So the last thing you want to do is eat here, willingly. I myself have to travel through here daily for my commutes to work and have become desensitized to the aroma of grease coming through the floors and on occasion if I skip breakfast, I'd pass to the upper level Zaro's and just grab a plain bagel, or an apple turnover. I'm not a regular but I know what to expect. Small line of about 1-2 people, juice fridge, and cashiers/severs who might be going near deaf or just don't understand that some people just want an untoasted bagel. This lady (cashier/worker) in particular always seems to be either upset or disappointed or disgusted with people, always seeming to want to yell, make off comments, but nothing insulting. My experience is pretty negligible to slightly annoyed at sometimes but again, I barely go here. The reason that prompted me to make this review is that I am sick today and had a runny nose and I knew the upper level Zaro's had napkins at the register with hand sanitizer. I wasn't going to get anything, just the napkins. This is the only spot they had them in the store. (From what I remembered off hand) One person was checking out, I get beside/behind him (tight space) and just start grabbing napkins. Again, didn't want to and wasn't going to get anything and the cashier lady had an issue with me doing this saying that I should say "excuse me" I explained I just wanted napkins to blow my nose and walked over to the garbage can, all the while this woman is yelling at me. There was one other customer that was on the far end by the doors who seemed to be making an order, no where near the register, where I was and the man in front of me had just paid.... So I fail to see or understand what the issue was. Even I was getting something, I would've seen the lady at the far end and just qued up behind her to make my order as she was doing or the other guy at the register and start making my order so I can pay faster. My go to here is the egg and cheese on an everything bagel I go here usually around 430am when they open so the bagels are pretty fresh the egg and cheese is ok it's pretty made they just put it on the bagel and toast it. The service is good there's always just one guy working there when I go but he's very nice even if he's overwhelmed with customers. The ambience is that of a train station because that's where it is. Having this location inside of penn station is very convenient and also something cool for a person like myself who doesn't frequent train stations. Just so you're not disappointed, they do not have cannolis here, but the guy working checked to see if they maybe had cannoli cake, it all turned out ok because I opted for an apple turnover instead! Later that evening I did a light heat of my pastry and OH MY GOODNESS... Delicious apple filling and crispy/moist crust brought me straight into autumn. I enjoyed every single bite! I'd rather drink dirty dishwater. Lukewarm coffee is awful. Weak coffee is awful. I got both at Zaro's. The server re-heated it in the microwave, which solved the temperature problem well enough to let the weakness problem become crystal clear. $2.88 down the drain where the coffee should have been. We were heading out to the World Trade Center and needed a quick breakfast. I didn't realize that the PATH won't allow you to eat on the train but my group of 14 was able to get a muffin, bagel or pastry to go within 10 minutes. There was a homeless/ panhandler begging for money, and the staff did their best to tell the woman to go away. I guess it was on deaf ears because the beggar kept pestering us. Not only did it taste like nail polish removed but I didn't ask for sugar and when I went to dump out the nail polish remover tasting coffee there was about an inch thickness of hardened sugar (this block of sugar was fully taking up about 1/8 of the cup). In the mornings when your rushing through Penn Station and being bumped and pushed all around racing to work, Zaro's is a welcomed brake. The staff is warm and welcoming and quickly remembers your favorite order. They ask about your morning and wish you a happy day. The food can sometimes take a moment to be ready - and they are always eager to hold mini conversations with you. The food. Its moderately expensive for breakfast - but its worth it and pretty much the only type of its kind in the Penn Station. Their breakfast sandwiches on croissants taste fresh instead and look great behind their glass case. Its all about the experience with this place. You want a perfect pastry and a warm sandwich in the mornings.. a friendly smile and warm hello to start your crazy busy day. Stopped in this joint on my way to a YEE, and decided to see what this place was about. I was starvin' Marvin, and needed some nourishment. So what better to fill my tummy with than a scrumptious bagel with lox and veggie cream cheese, and a slice of wonderful carrot cake??? The sammich was the absolute shizzle-dizzle. Loved it. Tore it UP. Tore it DOWN. I just tore that bih all around. The carrot cake was so dense, moist, and decadent. The red velvet cookie that I had, on the other hand? Eh. I think it may have just been a bad cookie day. Considering that most places nowadays don't make hard cookies any more, I would go out on a limb and just say that maybe they held those cookies in stock too long. In Newark Penn station this is the best place to get quick breakfast or beverage. The lines are normally long during peak hours but they're pretty good at giving fast service. A couple of times my order wasn't right so I suggest you double check your orders before you get on the bus or train. All and all fresh bagels and a good selection of teas... I'm happy! read more

Stopped in on my wait between the PATH and train departure. This spot is conveniently located at Newark penn station which connects the light rail, bolt and njtransit buses and the njtransit and PATH trains. If you're not in the mood for fast/processed food, this spot is pretty good. A small coffee and sandwich come to $5 or so (more if you get fancy stuff or paninis). Coffee was hot, but the French vanilla didnt pack much caffeine to last the trip. It also wasn't manhattan hot (you know what I mean ... At least your throat does) which was also good. Would try the bagels out next time as they had a good variety. This spot also has a lot of variety - from your normal morning baked goods (cookies, brownies, donuts etc) to sandwiches (egg and cheese, various paninis), salads as well as baked goods to go (last minute gifts!?). Service was quick and not too pushy, which was good. Overall, good for a quick bite or baked goods between commute stops if you're at Newark penn. I wouldn't go out of my way for a bite here though. read more
