Ordered: Pastrami sandwich (not the actual name but it's the only one with pastrami) - not bad at all for airport food, I've had worse at more well known places. It's def not Katz or Langers but certainly scratches the itch and price isn't bad either. They have a few sandwiches that all look decent. Give this place a shot if you have time. read more

Went to Zaro's Family Bakery inside the Newark International Airport to have brunch before my flight. You order your food and drinks through the big Self Ordering Kiosk where you can modify and add items at your convenience. Very easy to use and you pay your order when you're done, and wait for your order when it's ready to pick up. There's ample, spacious dining tables in front of the store. We ordered 2 cafe lattes, a brekfast sandwich for me and a bagel for my son. The food were fresh and good, coffees too! An absolute gem to hang out, relax, have coffee while waiting for your flight. The wait to get served felt endless, even though the line wasn't that long. The staff seemed checked out, which didn't help. I ordered two coffees and one of them was flat out bad. The other was fine, nothing memorable. Food looked decent but the overall experience was too slow and too uneven to recommend. It's convenient if you're already here, but don't expect much. I just paid $5.25 for the most mid croissant I've ever had in my life. Mid is a generous description if we are being honest. The prepackaged ones from Ralphs are dunking on these... and $5.25 for a plain croissant?!?!? Let me get this knife out my back. Our Founding Fathers are so disappointed rn. I know it's at an airport and I shouldn't even have any expectations, but my eternal optimism really gets me into trouble at times. But that's not something I would change. Wow. I always pass this place on my way to work. I'm always following the scent of bread and coffee as I come down the escalator but never stopped. I finally convinced myself to stop and get myself and everything bagel with cream cheese (5$ btw). The server (only server) was quick- she toasted my bagel and got it to m under 3 minutes. To the detriment, but relief of my bank account, of this bakery, I was inspired to buy my own 6ct bagels from the grocery store and make my own morning bagels ! Every year my Dad and I fly in and out of Newark from Chicago to visit family in NJ & PA. One of the highlights for me is getting black & white cookies and rugelach at the airport to bring home. This was the second year our gate was right by Zaro's and I remembered the mini black & white cookies I'd gotten last year were so good I searched online to see if they delivered out of state (they don't) Well, this year I was very disappointed. They didn't have any mini black-and-white cookies (the problem with the big ones is even if you refrigerate them, a significant portion of the icing comes off with the packaging.) Also, none of the full size prepackaged black and white cookies had dates on them, so no idea of the freshness. This year I bought two boxes of chocolate rugelach, they had no dates so for all I know they were from last year (sadly that's how they tasted) and those boxes are not sealed. (There's a little safety seal that needs to be broken to open the box, but the point is they're not airtight) and turns out the cookies were so dry and stale that by the time we landed, my carry-on was full of crumbs, most of the filling had broken off from the cookies, and they were painfully stale to the point of being inedible. So, buyer beware, which I should've used my comment sense and done, but I was so desperate for my only chance to get black-and-white cookies and rugelach. But with no dates on the packaging, no freshness sealing of the packaging, you have absolutely no guarantee your product won't be stale as dust like mine was. I recommend if you want to try the rugelach, buy the prepackaged two packs at the register, (which I also did, but they only had the raspberry and those DID have an expiration date .... it was the day I was buying them, so I couldn't stock up Just very disappointed in the lack of freshness all around and the lack of ability to determine if the products are fresh before you buy them. I spent $60 total (three black-and-white cookies and a two pack of raspberry rugelech that were fine, and two boxes of stale chocolate rugelech (18 pieces total) that we can't even eat) Thank goodness the black and white cookies are sublime IF you are lucky enough to not get stale ones (again, no fresh dates on the packaging means you're always rolling the dice) AND you can find the sweet spot of getting the cookie cold enough where you can take the wrapper off without taking all the icing with it, but not so cold that all the icing hardens onto the wrapping and comes off when you open it. It's definitely a challenge I have yet to master. TLDR: stay away from the boxed cookies! read more

I got the monte cristo sandwich and it was good. It was French toast brioche bread with meat and cheese all rolled into a sandwich. There was also syrup for dipping on the side. Overall it was a good dish and was on the heavier side. If you're looking for something lighter, opt to share this with a friend. The place was very casual and the service was pretty quick. Unbelievable! I am in the airport Nat 6:00 pm. It relatively quiet. I just down with a my cheeseburger from across concourse at a table I thought for public use. There is not a single person at any table except for me. As I take my first bite one of their employees rushes me and tells me "no outside food!" WTH?? I have been a business traveler since 1988 and been or more that 2,700 flights in 49 of the 50 states and this is the first time any fast food airport restaurant has been so petty as to try to run me off for sitting down to eat at an empty table. The ownership of this place needs to check their attitude. I will go ahead and say that I will not patronize this business going forward. I discourage other travels from doing the same. We are trapped in the airport with very limited seating. Every airport business should be exhibiting good customer service especially given the excessive prices for any airport food items. Added 3% to my bill for employee benefits charge. But it's not a tip and doesn't go to employees. How about you increase the prices on the menu if you want more money for your services? I only saw this as I had to ask for a receipt as I was on business travel. Most of the time I wouldn't get a receipt to save paper. It's a good quick sweet bite with some seating nearby if you just want something while you wait. The crumb cake was a little messy but tasty. The coffee ring was a twist on a coffee cake. Passed by Zaro's at the start of our Labor Day week in Los Angeles. Not too bad for a terminal concession and the prices weren't crazy either. My Monte Cristo sandwich was hot and tasty and the toasted Sesame Bagel was as expected. Seating was plentiful (it was 3pm) and the table was clean. The new Terminal A is a noticable improvement over the other dated terminals and has a food selection to match. In place of the middling Poppy's Bagels are two well known bakeries in Ess A Bagel and Zaro's. Unfortunately, the bagels at Zaro's are barely passable. I did my pre-flight to Phoenix routine of grabbing a bagel + cream cheese before wandering the terminal before takeoff. At nearly $7.00 for an everything bagel and lox cream cheese, the price wasn't egregious for airport fare. The quality is a different story: the bagel was too soft, the seasonings too muted, and the cream cheese lacking much of the smoked salmon hit you'd expect. Sure, it's an upgrade over Poppy's. This place does it's job of serving up breakfast / lunch and you could argue that it may be better than some of the other Newark Airport options, but it was mediocre at best. Zaro's Family Bakery was conveniently located next to my gate and had a long line and smelled great so I grabbed some bagels at 6:30am while waiting for my flight. They took some time to bring them out but for New York/New Jersey, these Bagels were mediocre at best. They had a weird texture and the cream cheese was so thick and was not spread properly. The bags were greasy when handed to me, despite only ordering cream cheese and plain everything bagels. I have better bagels at Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. If you just order here, I would suggest avoiding bagels and try their other pastries. read more
