I must say, this is a very underrated Pizzaria in Louisville. I have been here once many years ago and somehow never came back until years later (recently). I mentioned this to my friend in which we typically go out to eat about once to twice a week. Let's just say we are glad we came here. Coming in, we did get to seat ourselves. There did appear to be one employee working FOH (Front of the house) he bartended and served at the same time. It wasn't very busy when we but, more people started coming in. This was a Saturday afternoon. Our server did get to us in a very timely manner. We did take some time to browse the menu and did come to a compromise of half supreme and half meats pizza. I'm not a veggie person and our server did mention we could do half w/o veggies and do just meats on one side. It was still around the same price and most of the meats were on the supreme. My friend did get a side salad as an appetizer and I did get the cheese bread. We tried to not eat too much before the pizza came out. Now the pizza did take a little longer to make but, it was worth the wait. We were very happy with the amount of toppings on the pizza and this is one of the best pizzas we have had. We did end up getting to go boxes. And absolutely can't brag enough on our bartender/server. He was positive, helpful and actually happy to have customers. Our visit was 03/28/26. Hopefully he will see this review and maybe catch the name. We did thank him for everything but, want to thank him again. We need to make a habit of coming here. I think Za's is extremely underrated. My husband and I were in the mood for pizza but didn't want to break the bank. I saw on Yelp that this was the best bang for your buck. We were able to seat ourselves so there was no wait. The building does indeed give you pub vibes with the dim lights and neon signs. Our waitress Shelby was great. Our glasses were never empty and she was very attentive to all of her tables. We loved the food. We ended up splitting a 12 inch 6 cheese pizza and it was the perfect amount of food for 2 people. They also had a list of beer from different countries. We tried the Foster's from Australia and loved it. What I really like about Za's is the prices. I feel like pizza is becoming more expensive now. The 12 inch pizza was $18 (compared to other places, that's cheap) and the 25 ounce beer was only $6. Za's has one of the best pizzas in Louisville. The Garden Za is usually our go-to pizza, and we always get cheesesticks (which is basically a delicious sauceless cheese pizza with the sauce on the side). The employees are very friendly. We usually sit at the bar when possible. The bar stools are difficult to get into, but very comfortable once you are seated. The beer selection is amazing...so many international beer options! And a nice selection of draft beers. They also have a full bar with lots of liquor options. There are gender specific bathrooms. The women's bathroom is clean and has two stalls. It's a little dark and kind of awkward getting in and out. Parking in the Highlands can be a challenge, but there are usually side street parking options if there are no spots on Bardstown Road. They have televisions that only show sports, and there is usually music playing. Since it is a pizza place, there are times when lots of children are there. There is a back room that is usually peaceful when the front of house gets too loud. And there's a pool table back there. The only thing I would love for Za's to change is the ceiling fans and lighting. When sitting at the bar, there is a constant strobe light effect from the fan passing in front of the lights. This makes me dizzy and could be very unpleasant for someone with sensory processing or light sensitivity issues. Overall, I highly recommend Za's! Long ago it felt like we came to Za's 2x/month and this continued for several years until we burned out. I'm sorry Za's, we'll be back soon! We came on a Saturday afternoon and our party of 8 easily got a table. Exactly how we remember, Za's lighting was dim and the windows were open. It was a bit warmer and we all felt a little flushed by the end of the meal. More air flow was needed. The breadsticks were amazing! A large amount, each one big, nicely seasoned and the marinara was flavorful. The cheese sticks were okay but didn't get me as excited. We had three pizzas amongst us and everyone chose a pick your own for toppings. Be warned that asking to split toppings on half the pizza is a charge for each one, despite using less. Service was friendly and fast. Our tickets got a bit jumbled and were fixed. Street parking. Many meters must be paid on the main strip, excluding Sundays. read more

Za's pizza pub is a as the name suggest a pizza and bar located in the very popular highlands neighborhood of Lousiville Kentucky just off the main strip of Bardstown road. Like most highland establishments they do not have a private parking lot so you will have to street park. Today me and my family finally got to visit this place when bringing our daughters for some after the first day of school pizza. We walked in and it said please wait to be seated. There was a line at the bar and only one guy. After a few minutes he eventually told us "sit anywhere you like". I am about 99.9 percent positive this poor guy was the only one there. Because walking back to the bathroom you can see wide open in the kitchen and nobody was back there. And after the toll our order he was in the kitchen until we got our food. That said the guy did what he could. Very nice and for being bar tender/waiter/host/cook he was pretty darn efficient. The interior here is pretty small. Not much space. It has a pub type decor and a very nice bar setup. For our order we started with two apps. Buffalo wings and cheese sticks. My wife ordered a garden salad and we got a large cheese pizza and medium pepperoni pizza. The Buffalo wings were very good. Nice and tender and large. Good tasting sauce that wasn't overly spicy. Good app. The cheese sticks was a bit of a swerve. On our heads we was thinking mozzarella sticks but being a pizza place we probably should of thought "this is cheese bread". Regardless it still had great flavor and the cheese on it had a good flavor that was very different from the cheese pizza. So that way it didn't feel like we got two of the same things. The cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza were very good pizzas. Nice firm and thick crust and great tasting cheese. They really load up the pepperoni with toppings. Which is cool but I avoided it because heart burn is a real struggle for this guy and too many pepperonis. Sauce also had good flavor. Overall it's a pretty good slice of pizza. Kinda smaller pieces though. My only major complaint is there plates are super tiny. Like you couldn't get more then one slice on the plate. On actually tried and fumbled my slices on the floor and dropped a few f bombs. But it ok we still had leftovers for supper that night. Overall cool place. I bet it has a really good and fun night vibe for drinking and eating some slices. They have boozey popsicles which sounds appealing to me. Maybe I'll come without kiddos one day and sample the pub portion. read more

The service was fine and very friendly. However the food itself isn't very great. The dough on the cheese sticks and the calzone is so bland, there's zero flavor to it. The calzone was so thick and with the bland dough, a lot of it was inedible. We won't be back unfortunately. Nice bartender though so maybe just go for the drinks. read more

I am very impressed with their beer menu. and I LOVE how they organize it by country, and have a nice selection to choose from in each section. The pizza list is alright - it didn't seem like there was a whole lot of premade pizzas besides the meatless ones, so we ended up creating our own. We started out with some breadsticks, but didn't realize they take 20 minutes to make until we were a bit annoyed by the wait, asked our server about them and that is what she told us....what? Why would a simple appetizer take that long to make? Or let alone, any appetizer? Plus, they were just ok. We ordered a bacon, pepperoni and extra cheese pizza, which was also just alright. The dough/crust was pretty bland, the rest of it was fine. Nothing really memorable. Besides that our server was around when we needed her. I have been frequenting this restaurant for about 15 years. It is always carry out. The service has always been excellent. All the pizzas that I've tried here are delicious. Excellent food which is value for money. I typically have to wait for a couple of minutes as I pick up my order, and I have noticed that the atmosphere in the restaurant is always excellent, it is neat and tidy, they have several large screen televisions for viewing, and everybody there is typically having a good time. My lady and I are on a mission to find the best pizza in Louisville. Not sure if we will, but we are giving it a shot. This was our first time at Za's so this review will cover food and atmosphere. I will start with atmosphere first. We come in to a slow night to grab a couple beer and a pizza. Head to the bathroom and kind of got a stank eye like we were doing something wrong. Told the bartender we were using the restroom and then ordering. She quickly turned her odd expression around. After ordering pizza and food the bartender who was doing it all did a great job. Kudos and a 4.7 stars to you. Would have been a 5.0 but the initial greeting threw us both off. We ordered the works pizza. The pizza was pretty good but far from amazing. Overall maybe giving it a 6.5. The toppings and crust tasted great, but the sauce tasted like it was a can of tomatoes crushed up and used. Wasn't the best and ruined the pizza basically. It was edible and not horrible to eat, but our journey will continue to the next pizza joint because this one wasn't it. read more

Decided to give another chance to Za's and it is working out so far. I've been paranoid they blackballed me but that's not confirmed. Been ordering on the sly through a friend and the pizza is so, so good. It's just great pizza. The crust is perfect and the sauce has layers of flavor. Generous cheesiness. Proximity is also key. This is my neighborhood pizza joint. It's classic. Maybe it's time to see the positives here and chalk up the previously mentioned drama to a one-time thing. Relationship here is hopefully on the upswing after our tiff and I'm hoping for the best. It's hard to break up with a wonderful pizza joint. Going there today to show my face after our little issue. Its been many months since I've been here. I always seem to come here late night and the service and food are usually good. tonight was no exception. We ordered the 14" "The Works" pizza. It contains pepperoni, ham, sausage,onions, green peppers, black olives, mushrooms, extra cheese and bacon. Our pizza was brought to us while it was still hot, of course. I had to fight the cheese as I tried to take the first slice from the pizza and place it on my plate. The cheese seemed to be related to that super hero that stretches incomprehensibly. I really couldn't complain. The atmosphere has changed since my last visit. They have installed textured-metal tiles (it seems) in the ceiling, and ceiling fans. Also, they've cleaned and shined the walls. These changes made the place look a bit better. The night that we visited, the management had the large front-patio windows open even though it was cold outside. This made the indoor space uncomfortably cold for me. While Za's offers really good pizza, I rarely think about eating here because there are so many good restaurants in Louisville that I try to experience as many as possible. read more

Pizza was awesome. As stated in some of my other reviews, we like to try a new pizza joint every so often. This try was a success for both my fiance and me (and pleasing us both is a tall order) We were in the mood for cheesy...so we started with a six cheese and added pepperoni, sausage and on one half green pepper (for him). This was a winner! The crust held up to the challenge being perfectly baked with a crunchy bottom. Hearty handtossed with a gentle, almost buttery taste. The sauce was just the right amount that your toppings didn't just slide off and they seemed to know the correct amount of pepperoni and sausage to compliment all that cheese...not overpower it. The comment about the green peppers was that they tasted freshly sliced, which seemed important. Our waitress was very pleasant and since we got there before the rush, very attentive. They have a lengthy beer list and a full bar as well. I instead of alcohol I chose the Orange Dream soda. Pricey but delicious. Distinctive orange flavor. I am struggling to find any negatives in my experience...so let's go with the obvious...since it is on Bardstown Rd in the Highlands...finding a place to park could test your nerves so I suggest going at off peak times. This is a great place to come and grab a pizza and a beer and watch the game! I took my niece's there the other night because we are looking for an alternative to boombazz and we were delighted with are meal! We each got individualized pizzas: I got the banana peppers, spinach, and red onions while one of my nieces got spinach, and mushrooms and my last needs got the pepperoni. They were very warm and cheesy when we got them and because they were so large they made excellent leftovers the next day! They have some happy hour specials wings and beers but we didn't have any this time. Looking forward to going back and enjoying some other choices! They have a dartboard and a room in the back for over 18 only with pool tables. There's limited outside seating along Bardstown Road and they do have a number of TV screens. Ordered delivery during the pandemic, and they were great! Polite (and energetic!) host took our order, food came faster than they estimated. Everything in the order was accurate, and the pizza was great. We got the Aloha Za, the Garden Za, and the the Six Cheese Za-- I would recommend each! This is a staple of ours. Normally when we go it's at least a group of 8-10 of us. They accommodate really well for large groups. However, if you're in a rush, this is not the place for you. We love going here because it's local, on Bardstown Road, has a great beer selection and their pizza is consistent. I prefer their thin crust (well done-- or else the toppings make the pizza flop). You have to get the peppercorn dressing, homemade and really good on the salad as well as the pizza. There's no parking exclusively for Za's... you either park on the street or down a side street off of Bardstown Rd. During the not so hot months, their front windows open and let the street sound in, creating a inside outside feel. read more

Very nice pizza pub environment with very nice employees. Purchased a traditional hand tossed pizza with peppers and a garden salad. The salad was somewhat small but good. The pizza, however, tasted similar to that of Chef Boyardee, which is fine if you like that, but I was hoping for something a little better. Also, watch out for the Derby pie if you have tree nut allergies. Know someone who had it here and then had an allergic reaction, which can be deadly if not treated. No public restrooms. read more

Only three stars because I wasn't super blown away, but it was some good pizza! I built my own and got tomatoes, spinach, and pepperoni on one half and there was bacon and pepperoni on the other. The cheese sticks were also pretty good and they don't cheat ya on marinara so that was a plus! I went on a Monday in the middle of the day but I'm sure it is a super awesome spot to hit up on the weekends. Food came quick but we were the only ones in there. Za's gets it right. I was in the mood - nay, need - for delicious pizza after the Thanksgiving holiday. I swung by my friend's house in Deer Park (this area of town has a name? Who knew?) and we were on our way. We first stopped in to the new pizza place on Bardstown. They only offered beer by the bottle. Next. Then, we tried getting into Tony Boombozz (sp?). There were crying children and 'billies as far as the eye could see. The wait was ridiculous. Next. Knowing that we needed delicious food and alcohol by the glass/pitcher, our fate was obvious: Za's. SO glad we came in here. There was a decent crowd, but we were able to get a table right away. Our waitress appeared out of nowhere to inform us that they had Bell's Oberon on tap. Yes, please. We ordered a pitcher of beer-y nectar and a 12" Garden Za on whole wheat crust with olives, artichoke hearts and pepperoni. Pleased with our selection, we poured glasses, toasted, started to catch up and --whuh? The pizza is already ready? How can this be possible? Don't ask questions; just eat! And, eat we did. The crust was light yet filling, with crunchy pieces of good-for-you in every bite. The Garden Za was all spinach, garlic and tomato incredible-ness, made perfect by our added ingredients. It struck me, as I ate pizza, drank beer and caught up with one of my oldest, dearest friends a.) how good this pizza was; b.) how good the beer was; c.) how blessed I am to have the same incredible, rock-solid friends I made during high school; d.) what a fantastic Louisville establishment Za's is; and e.) how there really is no place like home - even when it drives you insane. Yes, I got all this from wheat, cheese, spices, veggies and pork products. This is transcendent pizza, y'all. If you come to the Derby City, take a break from Hot Browns and Derby Pies and check out the beer and pizza at Za's. You'll be happy you did.
