For a city as big as Toronto, there surprisingly aren't many authentic Japanese udon spots. When I lived downtown I used to frequent Raku and wish they would open one uptown! However, Zen Sanuki is definitely a reliable establishment and hits the spot when you're craving some delicious udon. The space itself is quite cozy and always busy, but it's quite easy to make reservations on Google or Yelp. The service is friendly and efficient with most if not all of their servers speaking Japanese. The udon is definitely the highlight or the menu and you can't go wrong with any of the options. As a hot udon lover, my go-to is their beef udon with a shrimp tempura on the side. The udon noodles are chewy, the dashi broth is hot and tasty without being overly salty, and they are quite generous with their toppings. Their tempura is light and similar to what you'd get in Japan. The price point is definitely high, but you get what you pay for!

The broth is yum: light but packed with umami, and the noodles have that perfect chewy bite. It might look pretty simple, but every slurp is packed with flavour. I've had both the chicken and tofu udon set and the tempura udon set. The chicken is tender with a mellow flavour that just works with the broth, and the tempura is spot on: crisp, airy, and full of flavour without being heavy.

If you want next level, hearty udon, this is the place. Service is friendly and inviting. You can get free tea with your meal. Lineups can be long though. Make a reservation if you can.

Always a delicious and comforting spot for authentic Japanese udon! My go to is the tempura udon, which is made to perfection (tempura tastes light!). Service is attentive, prompt, and mindful. While it can get pretty inside, it's still an enjoyable and comfortable dine in experience.

Expect to pay a premium here because it's definitely a one-of-a-kind in this area for authentic Japanese udon. Everything from the udon to the soup base is made in-house and the udon uses 100% Japanese flour imported from Sanuki. They have a variety of hot and cold udon options as well as different protein toppings (e.g., wagyu beef, pork belly, chicken, tempura shrimp/veg, duck, onsen egg). If you don't want udon, they also have a few donburi (rice) and sashimi/sushi options. In May, they were featuring a soba dish. I've tried walking in a few times on the weekend but eventually gave up because they were always packed so either make reservations ahead of time or be prepared to wait. Averaging ~$25-30 for an entree, I think you get what you pay for. You can certainly taste the quality of the soup base and ingredients, but whether you appreciate it enough to warrant the cost, I think that's up to your palate. Personally, as a lover of Japanese cuisine, I thought everything was tasty and fresh, but I wouldn't necessarily crave it or come back as a frequent regular. I'd consider it more of an occasional treat if circumstances aligned, but for others who are on the fence, I'd say it's worth trying at least once. They also have a soymilk ice cream that they make in-house that we really enjoyed the first time we had it dining in at Zen Sushi. We saw that they sold it in 800mL takeaway containers for $20/ea at Zen Udon so we bought one to take home. It was still decent but unfortunately not as good as dine-in because we could taste the ice crystallization - not sure if it got freezer burnt in their chest freezer.

Zen Sanuku Udon is one of my favourite dinner spots after work in Scarborough. It was especially busy last night on Wednesday during dinner time. The crowd usually dies down a bit by 8:30pm. We opt to sit at the bar for just the 2 of us. The udon noodles and broths are yummy here :) I remember having the curry udon when Zen first opened, and it was very spicy. It seems like the curry udon now has toned downed a bit, which was nice! The staff usually offer you a bib when you eat the curry one lol. I personally am not a fan of the curry here, but the chicken katsu was very well made, crispy and very juicy! The older lady working there is always friendly and courteous; English is not her first language, and she tries her best to carefully communicate with us. P.S. Mandarin Orange Pie is 100% a must-order :3

I have been a regular customer since the beginning and this time I am truly disappointed and it is my first time ordering takeout. I usually do dine in. Firstly, my takeout portion was very disappointing and I felt like the serving is extremely small for the price. Also, the whole soup broth for my udon spilled for some reason and I didn't open the bag till I got home. I am so shocked because there was a big discrepancy as compared to the dine-in experience. I have dined in the restaurant for more than 20 times in the past as a regular customer. What I ordered : Ikura Oroshi Udon+ Hiyayakko

really good and authentic japanese udon at Zen! they make their udon fresh and have lots of options and flavour to choose from. Their sushi is also very good and comparable to japan! Ambiance is nice and bright with many seating including bar seating! Service is also great. A bit pricey, but worth for good japanese food!

Easy to make a reservation and the staff and ambiance made us feel right at home. I will say the green tea we had at the beginning was very smooth and was definitely a welcomed change compared to other Japanese restaurants. I ordered the Udon with Roasted Duck and although the noodles, greenery and broth tasted amazing. The roasted duck felt like it was missing something and was more on the rubbery side. Next time I think I'll skip the duck and try out some of their other dishes.

The ambiance and the servers are super duper! The udon is nice and chewy too. But my biggest complaint is that it is overpriced and the menu is too focused. Roughly $30 for a bowl of udon is way overpriced in my opinion for having no side dishes or garnishes. Other than the price, the experience was lovely. But would I come again? Likely not.

This was my first visit, and I was in the mood for udon; however, the menu offered so many appealing options that I opted for the tempura udon with a side of tonkatsu. My dining companion selected the Niku Zanmai udon, featuring sliced beef and pork belly. The service was commendable--attentive, welcoming, and friendly. The restaurant maintained a tranquil atmosphere conducive to conversation.

My dad surprised me by choosing Zen Sanuki Udon over my initial recommendation, and it turned out to be an unexpected but delightful adventure. Upon entering, the restaurant's light wooden design and bar seating overlooking the kitchen immediately caught my eye. Sitting at the bar gave me a front-row seat to watch the skilled Japanese staff assembling orders, which added to the authentic experience. The service was excellent, making us feel welcomed and well taken care of. We ordered quite a spread, starting with Japanese green tea that was incredibly soothing and set the tone for the meal. I had the Katsu Curry Udon, which was hearty and satisfying--the katsu was perfectly fried, and the curry added a delicious spicy kick. My mom opted for the beef udon, featuring a rich broth and tender, flavourful beef. My dad went with the Zenbu Udon, a bowl packed with beef, tempura, and a variety of ingredients that created a flavour-packed experience. Overall, Zen Sanuki Udon is an underrated gem in the Midland and McNicoll area. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy authentic, comforting udon dishes!

We have been here once before but it's a little ways from home so not exactly some place we would pop into unless we were in the area for a reason and had reservations....reservations are highly recommended! On this visit reservations were made in advance and we arrived about 10 minutes early and our table was already waiting for us. Upon seating you are immediately offered tea or water. We ordered tea and found out they also offer an iced green tea so if it's hot out this is a good option. Was very refreshing! As the name suggests the specialty here is udon, it's made in house. They also have donburi's and limited selection of sushi. Flavours are very clean and natural here and service is very attentive. You are not given a dining time limit but the food does come out quickly so you can easily be in and out in 60-90 minutes. It was a lovely dining experience.

We both decided to get the soup, sandwich and a bottle of water ( $11 ) and boy did we make a good choice. Normally you would except a small soup bowl with a sandwich however this soup was in a HUGE (to me anyways lol) bowl with a full sized sandwich. My soup of choice was the chicken noodle with a ham & cheese croissant. I feel like chicken noodle is always a good staple to determine if it is worth coming back. I must say, it definitely was worth it. The chicken noodle soup was soo filling. Had some hearty vegetables and they definitely did not skip out on the chicken. I had to push myself to finish my sandwich as I was already too full! Thank you for amazing service and I am definitely coming back

On one end, it sounds like a run of the mill fast food joint (i.e. In and Out, Coffe Time), but the name doesn't do its Chinese name justice (Chinese name: Wellness Studio). On the other hand, the name does a great job of communicating the nature of its business: takeout and take home home style soup and meal. Regardless if you like their name or not, I think it's a good spot for this type of business. They manage to capture some of the passerbys and nearby white collar workers. On the other hand, it's not a high traffic mall, so the take home meals are a great way of increasing total customer spending. I'm basing this review purely on a takeout lunch of a steamed dried shrimp and preserve sausage and meat rice in lotus leaf. They really do a good job of balancing health and taste. I'm always wary of food that is healthy or healthier, but they end up tasting like cardboard. No such issue here. The rice on the surface looked kind of small. But they really didn't stinch on the preserved sausage and meat. The rice they used was the nice soft jasmine rice. They also purposely mixed in some quinoa. I forgot to mention that the rice also had a decent amount of dried scallop as well. Here are a few suggestions for improvement: A little bit less preserved meat and sausage, while adding more dried shrimp would be nice. The dried mushroom and shrimp can be a bit more aromatic and the lotus leaf flavour transfer can for sure be amped up. The lunch does come with home style boiled Chinese soup (or broth) and a herbal drink. Both of these were excellent. The items at Soup to Go are not cheap. The lunch with tax was just under $20. It is cliche, but you get what you pay for. Feel like drinking soup, but you don't know what is the soup of the day? You can check out their monthly schedule of soups!
