We have had a terrible experience with this company. Installed closests are still facing problems. Quality of the materials is low, feels cheaper than Ikea. Trevor is patronising and not pleasant to deal with and unwilling to do anything about the issues without asking us for more payment to replace his poor quality materials. This review is a difficult one to write - Jose and his team completely deserve a 5-STAR REVIEW from me because they were always on-time, professional, and courteous whenever they came out for the install...but ultimately I have to rate the company based on the overall experience... Our designer, R&M, helped us design a kitchen pantry and a home office, and one of the vendors suggested by R&M was Zen Space. We ended up choosing Zen Space to do the install because of all the amazing Yelp reviews that I read. But ever since Trevor's first on-site visit all the way until after the installation, we had multiple hiccups we just can't look past. I've hired Zen Space for 2 projects. One was garage storage which they did 8 yrs ago. This month I wanted to add storage cabinets to a small basement in my home. Trevor came out to hear my ideas and he very quickly sketched a plan, measured and helped me with pros and cons of several design issues. A few days later installers did the job. There were some installation challenges due to uneven floors and walls but I was very happy that both Trevor and the installers did their best to make everything fit. Trevor is a magician. He came in promptly after we told him of our need to build out some closet systems and an entertainment center. Trevor is one of those business owners that provide quality and value for the price quoted (which was very fair). Not only did he quickly draw up designs to meet our needs, he weighed in respectfully on aesthetic aspects that we needed guidance with. I must point out that Trevor's designs made super-efficient use of our spaces - even some that other competing designs said would be wasted. Trevor and his team did a really excellent job with our bedroom closet. We were so impressed that we hired him to get some shelves for our garage too. For our bedroom, Trevor made a rough sketch of what the closet will look like, instead of a detailed computer designed rendering. But that worked well for us, and if you think about it, this is how he is able to keep his costs low. Indeed, his quote was the lowest we got and after much deliberation, we decided to go with him. We were very happy with the results. The work was overall really well done and we got quite a bit of space to put our clothes afterwards. There was a smell that persisted for a few days, but that's what you get for the quality of the material you get. I assume if you go with someone else, you will have the same smell, but you will pay a lot more. The garage was also done similarly nicely. After the work was finished, there was a hairline crack from top the bottom exactly through where the screws were installed. We disagreed on whether it was there to begin with, and Trevor asked me to see if I can touch it up with paint, and if not he said he could send someone. Since it is really cosmetic and such things do happen when drilling holes, I let it go. read more

I had two office space solutions + a bench completed by Zen Space. I've posted a pic of one of the office solutions. Trevor spent a fair amount of time with me during the consultation, to ensure that he understood what I wanted done and could make my vision come to fruition. The day of the install there unfortunately was a power outage. The workers (3 in total) waited 30 mintues, but no luck, the power did not come back on. The following Saturday, Rob and Ignacio came to do the install. I'm a bit of a neat freak (not excessive compulsive, but cleanliness is next to Godliness right?). I asked them could they remove their shoes or lay down blankets to walk on as they worked, they did the latter, but the blankets were only in front of the area where they were doing the install - they gave no regard to the carpet that was outside of those perimeters. There was alot of saw work they had to do in my driveway, and the sawdust that they tracked in the house from going back and forth was clear to see. All this aside, my biggest peeve was they didn't seem to understand what, please-close-the-screen-door-behind-you, meant. They were asked on more than one occassion to do this. I couldn't figure out what was the disconnect? I'm the customer, I'm paying you for your time and services, I made a simple request, why should I have to repeat myself? Was I asking too much? Damn.... Between the saw-dust remnants and flies, I was ready for this experience to come to an end. The craftmanship and quality of the furniture was very good. It appears durable and should last for many years to come, however they used levels to draw (with a pencil) on my painted walls which I had to touch-up after they left. Please do not misconstrue my feedback as a reflection on the product Zen Space provides or Trevor's bed-side manner. Again, the quality is very good and it looks great in the rooms where the installs were completed and Trevor is truly a professional. My concerns are only in regard to the other areas noted above. I hope that they can take this feedback (I noticed they had other feedback pertaining to cleanliness) and make improvements in regard to how they work in customers homes, i.e., wear booties, lay more blankets, place tools directly on the blankets - not the customers' flooring, close the door behind you as you go back and forth, or at minimum ask the customer if it is ok to leave the door open. I would like to use Zen Space for additional storage solution work that I'd like to get done.....I just need that wow-factor in regard to the small details. read more

Trever is a very nice person to work with. He came to the house (on time) and sketched a design for each of the closets. I took a while to get input from my kids, but then approved the plan and we proceeded. The whole process took two months, but I wasn't in a rush so I was fine with him fitting my closets around his other jobs (and I took a while to give final approval). I had only requested that the job be done before mid-June and he had it finished in mid-May! Trevor has really good employees, Jose and Jesus, who I enjoyed working with as well. So my overall experience with Zen Space Solutions was good. Trevor (owner) knows what he is talking about when it comes to closets because you can tell he's been doing it for a long time. For some people Trevor may come off as a little aggressive but for me that was okay because he obviously had more knowledge than me. His workers came and installed our closets and would notify us where certain pieces would go before installing to make sure we were ok with it. I also even asked them to move a section and even though it delayed the process a bit, they did it. It shows that they care about the satisfaction of their customers. I was told that the job would be completed in about 3 days for 4 closets (all walk in) and that's what they did except for the one piece that needed to be moved (required someone to come out for 10 minutes another day). If I didn't make the request for the item to be moved it would've been done in the 3 day window but Trevor says he gives an estimate of the amount of days but most important to him is to make sure his guys do a good job on the project. I would probably go with Trevor and his team again as they were able to come out within a week of signing the contract and promptness of Trevor's responses. They will also repair any items or replace if you are not satisfied with what you see and I think that's very important as you are investing a lot of money into a closet. Also after getting quotes from 4 different companies, Trevor was able to give me the best price out of all of them with what he was able to provide (which was more than others). We interviewed multiple contractors - several met with us Zoom-only and made us provide our own measurements. We spent many hours with other contractors working through CAD programs to design 5 wall cabinets for our garage. He came out and measured the space and sent me a quote that was reasonable. In a few weeks, his staff came and removed the existing built in cabinet. Recommend to anyone who wants an updated functional closet in every room. Review is long over due. Three years ago I had zen space solutions come in and do 4 closets. A medium walk in closet and 3 regular closets. Trevor came in and asked what the rooms were being used for; i.e. master, kids, office, and guest room. He drew up the layout for each room then and there. We discussed the pro and cons of different layouts and he modified according to what I wanted. Once layout was finalized we scheduled an install date. His crew came in and worked efficiently and Trevor came in to check on his guys work mid job. Fast forward to now and the reason that got me to write this review. Three years later and two kids later. My three year old decides to climb the shelves in her closet. Yay.... The bottom shelf in her room had something heavy stored on it and when she climbed, one corner gave way. She is fine, she was on the bottom shelf. The shelf on the other hand has a cracked corner. I called zen space and asked about fixing the shelf and getting two additional shelves for another room. Nonie scheduled a crew member to come in and replace the shelf. They were on time and efficient and didn't charge me a thing. Great team, great service, great communication, great product all for a great price. I needed to get my garage remodeled and found Zen Space Solutions on Yelp. I contacted Trevor and he and I exchanged information over text messages on what I need to get done. Basically I wanted to to get new cabinets for optimizing storage in my garage. Trevor was extremely responsive. Weekends, late nights (yes, even 11 pm), but asked every question. He came by to actually figure out the placements and the dimensions. I was skeptical as he very quickly drew the garage walls up on his workbook with dimensions and other intricate details. Quoted immediately and even set the date. As committed, his crew came on the specific day and time and completed the work much earlier than anticipated. UPDATE (Jan. 2015) Since my first review, we have worked exclusively with Trevor to complete the job. I now understand the high ratings. I initially had a poor impression of Trevor because he came off as defensive of Art (another reviewer mentioned that they were college roommates, I had assumed they must be family). Once Art was out of the picture, however, Trevor was professional, responsive and easy to work with. I imagine that if we had worked with Trevor from the beginning of the project it would have been a very different experience and very likely would have earned five-stars. My takeaways: 1) Avoid working with Art. Working with Art is not worth the effort or stress. If Art is assigned to your job, go with another company. 2) If Trevor is your assigned designer Zen Space Solutions seems like a very good option. We didn't get to work with Trevor for a full project, but he has fixed the few problems we had and was friendly, responsive and professional the whole time. I also really liked the team that installed the built-ins and the final product is great. I would recommend Zen Space solutions to a friend if I knew they would be working with Trevor. In the end, my only hang-up is our experience with Art. I've left it at three-stars because the majority of the time I worked with this company was spent trying to work with him. INITIAL REVIEW (Dec. 2014) We chose Zen Space Solutions because of the great reviews and because they promised a faster turn-around time than other companies. Our built-ins were installed last weekend, Dec. 6. The team that came to build and install our built-ins were great, but Art, our designer, has been truly awful. He doesn't respond to messages, has been unwilling to set definitive times for appointments--or misses them--and is unclear and unprofessional in response to questions. Now, while our built-ins have been installed, we are still waiting for several repairs to be made. Last Saturday, on install day, Art promised that he would have the wood cut and the repairs made sometime during the week (meaning this last week). Classically, that did not happen in spite of several follow-ups asking when he would be coming by. I have included a screenshot of some of our text messages this week in which I try to get him to nail down a time and he both refuses, while sending other, unprofessional, erratic messages. Finally tired of working this way--this was very typical of Art throughout the process--we emailed Trevor, hoping based on Yelp reviews that he would be able to fix the issue. Trevor was unapologetic and responded that it had been difficult for Art to "nail a time down" with us. He then offered to send someone out on the next Monday from 10AM-3PM --a time that we had already noted that we were out of town. He followed it up with "those are the service times we offer." As if to suggest we were the ones that had been inflexible. So confusing since we had offered literally anytime the previous week as long as we had some advance notice! This is the guy with all the amazing Yelp reviews! Anyway, we're now stuck with broken drawers and missing shelves and a company that is super difficult to work with. I held off reviewing Zen Space until every minor detail was resolved. As of today, it finally is. We had 3 companies quote in the following order: Zen Space with Trevor California Closets Premier Garage With Zen space, the system goes all the way to the floor, whereas Cali Closets has a gap. Trevor also does a trim finish at the top of the system which is a huge plus. I initially felt like going with Zen was taking a leap of faith since we didn't have any nice drawings or renderings, but Trevor produced a really accurate hand sketch of how everything would look once we gave him the green light. We had three bedroom closets built out, including our huge master closet. We've been living with the closet systems for six months and absolutely made the right call going with Zen. Trevor has been awesome, very responsive with every issue. The quality of the products are top notch. And I'm sure it'll add value to our home, so money well spent. My only advice, when the installers come out and are working by your garage, have them turn the saw blade away from your stuff. Ours was covered in saw dust which was really annoying, but the system was so beautiful I'll let this one slide. Best investment ever. read more

We wanted to have more storage for our walk in closet, so thinking of have it custom build. Did research on yelp review and have two company (closet factory and Zen space solution) came in for consultation. Trevor the owner came in and I told him I wanted more storage in my closet. He was quick and gave us a quote right now. We waited for the designer from closet factory to come in next day, the pricing is a bit higher and the storage purposed was not spacious as Trevor. So we end up with Zen space. We were happy we did, the installer was nice and easy to work with. We did have some minor rework after the project completed. Trevor is excellent in coming up with a custom design on the spot! You can tell he knows closet design inside and out, and that he has years of experience. It was great working with Trevor on ironing out the last minute details and changes in my smaller closet design. He was always available through phone or email and was always quick to reply if I had any questions or concerns about the details. Installation was great! Rob, the installer, obviously had great carpentry skills and paid attention to the details, making sure the closet organizer had that complete "built-in" look and feel with seamless integration. He took his work seriously and was always very focused. Very admirable. Work environment was clean afterwards too! I get the feeling Trevor has hired the best installation guys. Highly recommend! Follow-up and follow through is great! Price is competitive. And the cost is well worth it! Never knew I could store this much in my closet! When there I kept asking for his recommendations and what they would cost (e.g. the deluxe treatment vs. basics). He could not or would not give me any kind of estimate. He said he would have to send a painter, José, out first. About a week later José contacted me and came out to look at the painting. After that I did not hear back from either of them. Update: A couple of weeks later Trevor got back to me and apologized for José not getting back to me. He gave me a reasonable bid for the project, but I decided to go with another company. read more

So both Trevor and Art responded rapidly after I posted my first review about getting no response and missing the timeline I originally planned with. It looks like the confusion may have been caused by poor cell phone reception - I thought I never heard back but they did have record showing sending out. Anyways, although it may be too late to re start the whole process again, I appreciate them responding to my complain very quickly and at late evening when people are not suppose to work. This one star is for my very disappointing experience with Art. I approached Zen because the high rates on yelp and the fast response they seem to be able to offer from other customers experience, however mine is completely different. I was approached by Art two days after I sent an initial email (which is OK given the initial contact), we talked over the phone, I expressed my urgency situation, sent over my floor plan and closets dimension, he promised he would get back to me in xxx time but he never did. I sent him texts twice, he never responded until few weeks later I decided to work with another company. Can't count on his words. I should have read the detailed reviews earlier and avoid working with Art. Now it's too late. I'm spending my $10,000 ish full house closet needs with someone else.
