The good part : We had a large garage closet system done by Trevor and Zen space solutions in Sep 2014 and we loved them. It was sturdy, deep and looking really good. It really value for money. The not so good : Early 2017 we were moving to a new house and wanted to take these beautiful and useful cabinets along. I contacted Trevor and he responded saying that it would cost about 50% of original since base has to be changed. After thinking for a few days, we decided to still move it and informed Trevor. No response from him. Sent one reminder still no response. Finally had it moved by another carpenter. I am doing some more closets now but Zen space is not someone I am considering. read more

We need full MBR closet done. Talked to all big names but none gave us comfortable feeling. After reading yelper's reviews about Trevor and his team we decided to talk to Trevor. He came and was quick to design the whole MBR closet. Also pointed out what is feasible and what is not. He accommodated many of our requests such as 12" height of drawers (normally he makes them no more then 10" height), a locked drawer, wide enough bottom shelf for my safe, another bottom shelf in the corner to give me more storage space. His price was very good. Installation was professional. Luis was very good. He patiently answered all my questions. I asked him to take care of new carpet and floor and he took of his shoes every time he came into the house. At the end of job he cleaned up everything. His partner Ignacio was OK. seemed like he was a new kid around the block and always in a hurry to get things done but not necessarily . He was supposed to clean the shelves at the end and he didn't do a good job. While putting the cloths back later, I found many shelves especially the top most shelves all around were still dusty. But overall I was very satisfied with my new cabinets. Recently two of the drawers started shaking a bit while opening. I called Trevor and he sent Jason once to figure out what is wrong and then again to fix it. Jason was very nice too. I will recommend Zen Space Solutions to my friends and family. Trevor and his team have done great work on two separate jobs for me. The first was a smallish walk-in closet that felt like it was bursting at the seams. After their work, the space is much more functional, organized and zen-like. I now also use the closet as my office and for the occasional nap because it feels so clean and tidy. The design process was easy and painless. The install was professional and took less time than for me to remove all the clothes from the closet. The second job was a three cabinet garage unit. My wife and I looked at two different closet companies and we chose Rick with Zen Space Solutions. We needed two of our master bedroom closets done as well as our coat closet by the front door. Rick offered us a much better (emphasis) deal with better fit-and-finish touches than the other major company proposed. Other reviews say the same thing as well. Rick's designs were symmetrical and beautiful to look at. The his and hers closets were almost mirrors of each other, yet customized to meet our individual needs. The mirrored, symmetrical quality is nice because if we ever decide to sell the house, both closets would not look strangely different. The other company offered a design that maximized space for my wife at a cost to simplicity and aesthetics. Same thing with the hall closet. This design, with a tall, all-shelf unit in the center flanked on both sides by hanging units each with shelves on top is also pleasing to look at. Rick, Luis, Api and Agustin all helped with the installation of the units. We live in a condominium complex, and they were very courteous and respectful to our neighbors. The made sure they were making the least noise and dust as possible. They were all respectful to our home as well. They were very careful with our new, shiny wood floors, and made sure they were careful not to cause any damages when moving large pieces around our unit. Lastly, regarding the shelving units themselves, the bottom, floor moldings are great. The counter tops in the master closets on the drawer units are a very nice touch. I really love the use of 3/4" thick boards. They are very sturdy compared to 5/8" boards. And lastly, I'll remark about the drawers. I love that they pull all the way out so that you can see the whole drawer from front to back. Many drawers leave four inches or so of the back still hidden within the unit, so you cannot often see what may be hiding back there. These drawers are awesome! He came to our house, listened to our ideas and offered his own, and was really easy to work with. The team who came out to build and install the shelves were great. We had Trevor come in and transform our "apartment like" closets. Trevor was quick on the draw in terms of estimates and coming up with committed dates of installation. He has an astute eye and it was very apparent during the estimation process that he has "been there done that" many times over - he noticed quite a few things about our preferences - pointing out how a few small changes could make a world of difference. Trevor left our first appointment with an estimate that he put together over some 'hot chai" and which he stuck to through the process. Awesome! Compare that to a few others who turned around estimates over 2-3 days and made no significant recommendations that could make a difference. Trevor's was also the lowest of the lot, though the difference was not significant. As for the installation, the crew showed up on time. 3 of them. Beat their own estimate of taking 2 days for the installation by 40hrs! Left the place clean. The finishing was nicely done. The drawers and structure look and feel solid. The edges were nicely done, the foot-boards elegant - the entire setup looks wunderbar and feels solid, backed by Trevor's assurance of life time guarantee. Art helped us to make two built-in shelves, everything is smooth except that the delivery and installation of one door got some delays, but it didn't impact my daily use of it since the main shelves were installed on time with very good quality. UPDATE #2/FINAL (January 2015): Our cabinets were fully installed today, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. They look fantastic (I'll post a pic when I get a chance), and we've already gotten great compliments from our friends + neighbors. I have to say that I was a bit nervous leading up to "install day" but the team that came to install the shelves were wonderful. Luis clearly knew what he was doing, listened to our questions and eased any last-minute concerns. They also did a few extra "tweaks" at the end that I appreciated (though they forgot to bring the chrome baskets that they had to order and I'm hoping will arrive soon). For me, the quality of the install is 5-stars, but the process could have benefited from better communication. If I could, I would give Zen Solutions 4.5 stars. As it is, I'll leave it at 5 stars as I believe they were still a great value for the price tag. -- UPDATE #1 (December 2014): Upgrading to 3 stars. Waiting until cabinets are installed in January to write a final update. 1) Understand that Art got into a car accident and was slower on the reply. Things got better after I left a message for Trent. 2) Would re-iterate comparing prices with contractors. The ones Zen recommended were hit-and-miss. A few had great prices, but were semi-professional (always showing up late for appointments). Others simply had outrageous prices (and didn't reply until repeatedly asked for quote many days later, despite agreeing to reply same-day). 3) Still only have "sketches" of the cabinets schematics, and a bit nervous how the actual installation will look. Like their competitors (Premier Garage, California Closets), wish they could provide an actual "rendering" of what the installation will look like. Maybe that's the trade-off for the claim of superior value. -- ORIGINAL REVIEW (November 2014): I'm surprised to be writing this 1-star review for Zen Space. Based on the stellar reviews, I likewise had high expectations for my experience with them. My summary for those considering Zen Space: 1) Work with Trevor, and avoid Art. It seems to me that most of the negative reviews for Zen Space are because of Art, and not Trevor. Art is unprofessional, unresponsive, and in general not very customer-friendly. I've been trying to communicate with him for days now, with minimal + erratic communication by text message. He claims it's because he was in a car accident, but it seems from the comments here that this behavior is a general pattern and not the exception. In the 2 weeks that I've been working with him, I still don't know what I'm getting, when I'm getting it, and who will be delivering. At this point, I still only have 2 "sketches" of our cabinets sent via text message (yes, text message ... with incomplete designs), confusion over whether our cabinets will have backing (was told 'yes' upfront, but then 'no' when attempted to confirm after negotiating price), no final quote (we had asked to do cabinets, floor, and lights), and multiple emails that have gone unheeded. 2) The quality of their work seems top-notch, but their service is not. As a result of Art's unprofessional behavior, I reached out to Trevor directly - with no response. Apparently, Art is Trevor's college roommate, so it only makes sense that they would "stick up" for each other. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Trevor never called me back, despite my leaving a voicemail with my personal cell # indicating my annoyance at their lack of response or professionalism. 3) Compare prices with competitors. After speaking with a few of Zen Space's competitors, I realized their prices are not the best. Totally understandable and something I'd be willing to be pay for, IF their service was better - more professional, more timely, and more transparent. That *not* being the case, I'd recommend shopping around to compare prices before committing to anything with Zen Space. Even though their prices might be slightly higher, as someone with a packed schedule, I'm gladly willing to pay a slight premium for the peace of mind knowing that I'm dealing with professionals who take pride in their work and workmanship. read more

I recently got a custom closet installed for by master bedroom from Zen space solutions. This designer's name is Trevor and he did a preliminary design for our space to accommodate our needs and budget. Zen space solution is a small scale operation in the bay area but I am very glad to have found them. I got a lot of estimates from some of the bigger vendors that were into custom closet business but no one was able to get what we needed for the price we wanted. Once we agreed on the design they agreed to have the closets installed within a few days time. On the day of the installation the crew arrived on time. I live in a condominium complex so it was little hard to move the cabinets and machinery involved for the installation into the unit from the parking garage. The installation was very quick and professional. The entire work was finished within two hours and they did a good clean up job too after the installation was complete. The materials used for the cabinets looks very robust with a clean finish. Overall it was a very hassle free experience and my wife and I are very pleased with our new closet. read more

Zen Space is really awesome. I'll explain further why I had to knock off a star, but, they really do strive to be a 5-star company, and truthfully, they deserve every one they get. Price... I didn't bother getting multiple quotes. I trust my yelpers who said they were competitive and elected to support a smaller business rather than another one that seemed to be a bit more commercial. I wasn't able to get everything done in my quote, but Trevor also didn't nickel and dime me with having to split it up. When I'm ready to do the rest, I know how much each area will cost. Experience... I actually called a few months ago to set up an appointment and got Rick. I ended up having to cancel that first appointment to take my dog to get an emergency root canal (no joke) but I didn't get any sass about having to do that last minute. When I called back a couple months later, I got Trevor. Trevor is a bit more warm - Rick wasn't rude, he just sounded stressed/busy. Anyway, Trevor showed up on time and was happy to take a look at the areas where I needed his help. He came up with a quote for all the areas I needed and drew out his plan right on the spot. This was impressive to me because I love organization and know exactly what I want and can be pretty picky about things if your ideas don't jive with mine. But Trevor was spot on. This was right before the holidays and he quoted me a few weeks out for the install. Usually I don't care much about having to wait a little bit, but I had to work around some guests that were coming to visit around the install target. His date seemed to work out perfectly since it was the weekend before they were slated to come and I was excited for them to see it. His communication is excellent, as we got the contract and deposit taken care of over email. The weekend before the install, Trevor emailed to ask if we could postpone due to a huge job he was working on. Usually, I would have no problem with it, but I had already pulled everything out of the other closets and with the guests coming, it would have been a pain to have to move the date. But Trevor and his team came through. I could tell it was painful to keep my date, but he made it work. In my opinion, this is huge and very reflective of the character of this company. On install day, Trevor called to let me know when the installer would come and about how long it would take, but it would only take a day. Rob showed up on time and went about his work. He was happy to use the booties I gave him to walk around on the carpet. I think I remember him saying that the measurements were a bit off so he had to pretty much re-cut everything which caused him to work until about 7 pm without finishing. He asked if he could come back in the morning to finish. It was a work day, but I am lucky enough to have a flexible schedule so even though it wasn't ideal, it worked out fine. I also know that Rob would have finished that first night if I really wanted him to, but I was fine with finishing the next morning. He cleaned up his areas pretty well and used some awesome smelling orange cleaner which filled my house with a pretty pleasant smell. The only gripe I could call out was that since he had to keep going outside to cut boards, he had some dust/wood pieces tracked between the rooms and on the stairs. About a week after install, Trevor checked in to see if everything was working out ok. I told him it was but that I wanted to raise one of the "stationary" shelves. He told me how to do it so I will this weekend. He also volunteered to come out and do it, but I think this will be easy enough to do without having to have them come out again. Quality...excellent. The installed closets look better than the ones that came pre-installed in my master bedroom. They are very solid and worth it. Trevor told me that I could even put books on it without them blowing...and I believe him. So the 1 star is for the extra day and having to vacuum up after Rob. Which both were not big deals for me, but to be fair the "perfect" experience comes with a 5 star rating, so the star goes. In my opinion, 4 stars is still pretty solid. I will not give it a second thought to call Zen to do those other spaces when I'm ready and will be happy to write 5 star reviews for those installs. Thanks Zen! read more

We tend to eschew chains in order to support small, local businesses so I was delighted to find Zen Space Solutions. Rick came to our home, listened to our needs, generated ideas and forwarded his plans in a timely fashion. I found him to be energetic and expedient with excellent turn-around time. Ultimately, we didn't end up going with Zen Spaces (our desire for an ultra modern style was not the company's strong suit) but I feel the service at Zen Space Solutions was excellent and I recommend giving them a call if you have a need for custom storage. read more

Wow, if I could give more stars I would, Trevor, Luis and crew are just that awesome. From the ability to be on site to provide a design and a quote with in a day of calling him, to providing an amazing value, to moving the scheduled install date *earlier* than originally planned, to providing an amazing high quality product, these guys are just on it.
