Recently visited Zen Steak and Sushi and it was an overall good experience. Our waiter was attentive and our food was hot and fresh. I ordered the NY steak and chicken dinner and it was pretty good. The rice was a bit dryer than I like but it wasn't too bad. The sushi menu was extensive with so many great options to choose from. The restaurant was bright and inviting. For our first time trying Zen, I'll give it a 5 star review. We came here for date night tonight on a Wednesday night and it was perfectly not crowded. The host greeted us quickly, sat us, and we got our drink orders pretty immediately I ordered an eel roll because when I asked the waiter about the raw sushi rolls that are wrapped in radish/cucumber rather than rice and seaweed he said it was only a special roll? Whatever that means I also ordered shrimp hibachi dinner while my husband ordered the NY strip dinner. We decided to dine in rather than sit around the hibachi area The restaurant was beautiful inside, high ceilings, clean, and modern with bar seating and sushi bar seating When I got the eel roll, the first thing I noticed was how there was barely any eel in there compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to (which has been all over the states). But it did taste pretty fresh so next time I'll dine in just for sushi and will update my review The hibachi dinner was great. It wasn't super salty like other hibachi restaurants. I felt like my husband's steak was a bit over cooked but he enjoyed his meal Besides the skimping out on eel, the only problem I had was waiting longer than usual for our hibachi dinner to come out. I was expecting our food to be nice and hot but it was actually partially cold like it was sitting in the back for a bit We were starving so at this point we were scarfing our food down. I was really hoping for better. We didn't do the hibachi table but some still ordered the same type of dinners. My mom's chicken was way overcooked and tough. The people who had chicken fried rice said was decent but not great. I had lady in red sushi which was very good. We were the only ones that were not in the Hibachi area with a regular table and it took a long time to get order...I would hate to see what happens when they are busy. Maybe this place is made for Hibachi only. I'd try it again just to see. read more

Terrible experience. My aunt and I showed up at 1pm and stood there waiting for ten minutes for someone to come seat us in the ghost town dinning room. ON A SATURDAY. She ordered steak and shrimp hibachi, which she enjoyed. I ordered 5 pieces of salmon (sake) nigiri and a Tuna Lover Roll. (The tuna lover roll is SUPPOSED to have spicy tuna, avocado, mayo, seared scallion, and eel sauce.) My aunts food arrived quickly while mine arrived AFTER my aunt had finished her hibachi dinner. What I got was 5 random pieces of nigiri. 1 salmon, 1 shrimp, 1 tuna, 1 eel, 1 yellow tail. The lady literally set the plate down hard and RAN. The yellowtail had a VERY strong fish smell and I didn't eat it. Then she came back over 5 minutes later with my roll. Which only had raw tuna, not spicy. And avocado. That's it. Not the roll I ordered at all. Now I understand there was a good bit of a language barrier, but I pointed at the exact roll/items I wanted. And she said them back to me as confirmation. WORST $65 ever spent. Go ANYWHERE else. read more

A yummy new addition to the Auburn/Opelika area! The atmosphere is very inviting for a hibachi restaurant with clean decor and open dining area. The cocktail and beer variety is great with many Japanese inspired drinks and imported Japanese beer. $2 sake bombs on Fridays are a hit! The sushi has been fresh every time we go and super tasty. The amount of food you get for hibachi is great for the price and we always have enough leftovers for another meal. They also offer regular seating and dining options, such as ramen and yakisoba, which I'm sure are delicious but we have yet to venture to that side since the hibachi is so good. Service was good, food not so much. The fried rice was okay and the soup was good but my chicken was so overcooked that it was difficult to eat. Had an okay dinner here. Tuesday the appetizers are half off, and the gyoza was very crispy and delicious. Went for the hibachi steak as the main course. Soup, salad, and mains were all about average quality and good size. The "show" was really dismal and didn't have any attempt at the usual showmanship or tricks I've come to expect, however and really felt more like an afterthought, which is a bit concerning considering the mandatory 18% gratuity for eating at the hibachi table! The interior was pretty nice though. Overall, a bit lackluster and I think I'll stick to my usual hibachi place in Opelika moving forward. read more

Pleasantly surprised! This is a Brand new Restaurant and just looks fantastic inside. Total 9 hibachi stations with table dining as well. I started with a EBI Sushi and ordered the Filet & Chicken combo. Wouldve tried the shrimp but had that as an app. The Steak was cooked to my order MR and the Chicken was also terrific. THE SERVICE was spot on from entering the door. They also offer lunch and have a few specials that were on their entrance board as well. I highly recommend this as a must stop for dinner. I'll update ab lunch soon. They have a very cozy full bar along with several tap beers. They're also reasonably priced my entire check was only $30. read more

Have looked far and wide for a quality hibachi restaurant, and this place quite possibly is one of the best. Great food and great service! The teriyaki chicken is great and so is the fried rice. Portion sizes are large as well, so you are definitely getting what you pay for. Go here at least once a month and I plan on continuing that tradition read more

My mother and I just finished a wonderful meal here. Andy, our waiter, was super friendly and attentive to all our needs. We ordered the bacon wrapped scallops that were in a heavenly garlic cream sauce for an appetizer, and we each ordered the combination filet and chicken. Our steaks were both grilled to perfection at our requested medium rare, and were very flavorful. The chicken was nicely grilled as well. We sat at a table instead of the hibachi grill, because we are both too old to care about a hibachi show. read more

We ordered sushi via delivery. The sushi rolls are not cheap. We ordered 9 sushi rolls, chicken fried rice and a seaweed salad. The sushi and fried rice were great but the seaweed salad missed the mark by tasting too fishy. But we really enjoyed the food overall and will eat here again. It's not 5 stars because after ordering that much food, especially sushi, none of our take-out bags had chopsticks!!! Huge disappointment and ended up using a plastic fork. I visited Zen with my family of four on a Sunday afternoon. The atmosphere was modern, bright, and clean. We were seated immediately in the Hibachi section and waited on promptly. The spring rolls were excellent. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The presentation was excellent. The Chef performed all of the standard tricks flawlessly. The food was prepared with attention to detail including a couple of special requests. The wait staff was great and kept our drinks refilled with little to no waiting. I am an out of state student here at auburn and a current senior. In my 4 years here this is hands down the best dinning experience I've ever had. Andi is the best server and the food is incredible! This restaurant is incredible... so much better than the broken spoon next door. Highly recommend for any college kid or family.
