One and done. In search of a Chinese takeout place we decided to try Zen's. We ordered orange beef, General Tao's chicken, beef chow fun, fried dumplings, and boneless spareribs. The boneless spareribs, although not what we were expecting, were very good... Had a true barbecue taste. The pan fried dumplings were awful. These may have been pan fried, but not pan fried fresh as they were gummy and lukewarm warm. Not a great flavor either. Onto the entrées, the beef chow fun was good and that's where it ended. The general Tao's chicken had an herbie flavor that we weren't used to. The chicken was good but the sauce wasn't. The orange beef was a disaster. The worst I have ever ordered. Not to be funny, but where was the beef? This dish was almost a crumbly, floury, pasty grainy mess. It was inedible. I felt like I was eating the remains of the egg and flour sticky mixture from when I cook up chicken cutlets. I've been coming here on and off when i'm in the area for the past few years and I really have to say that this is my favorite chinese takeout place! The people who work here are so nice and they put out tea and chinese noodles to have while you wait for your food. This is a take out but they have tables to sit at so you can eat in as well. You order at the counter and they will bring it to your table. It is one step up from the other take out places that i've been to, the tables are comfortable to sit at any it's not too cold or hot like the other places who really don't want you to eat in! I've gotten a very wide of dishes here over the years and i've never had anything that I didn't love. Most notable for me were the scallion pancakes and the boneless ribs. Visited last night since my dad and I were in the neighborhood. We ordered to sit down and eat. Service was fast despite it being Friday night and pretty busy for both take out and sit down. Seating was good and food was good. Establishment including bathroom was very clean. I ordered the tofu with broccoli and garlic sauce. My dad ordered shrimp with mixed vegetables. The girl took our order at the table and knew by what we ordered that we weren't eating meat so she was able to give us vegetable fried rice and veg spring rolls which we appreciated. Many Chinese food places don't accommodate the egg rolls or rice for veggie versions. The employees were friendly. It would have been a 5 but the garlic sauce in my dish tasted like a mix between teriyaki and soy (way too salty) which was disappointing. My dad inhaled his dish! It's unfortunate that previous reviewers seemed to have poor experiences because they were looking for their old Chinese spot from 5 years ago. I don't think that's fair Zen's. I would rate Zen's two and a half stars. We ordered takeout. The food was ready very quickly! I ordered the Mala chicken prepared extra spicy; it was not spicy and had a lot of black pepper. We also had a bunch of other items including beef lo mein, General Tao's chicken, sesame chicken, dumplings, bbq spare ribs, and coconut shrimp. In general, the food was heavy and sweet. Went back a second time, and it was nowhere near as good as it was the first time. The first time, everything was great, tonight, everything was bad. Bad enough to the point that I will probably not give it a third chance even though the first time was exceptional. Food was AWESOME for chinese, I am sure if I pulled a take-out it would definitely drop to a Three Star rating but I sat in and it was great. Check your receipt! We ordered a few items, including small Sweet & Sour Chicken and small Roast Pork Lo Mein. The total bill came to about $10 more than I expected. Looking at the receipt (I uploaded a picture), it says "small" on the receipt but they charged us the price for the large - $8.25. They fixed it when I showed them, before I paid, but make sure you check your receipt. Foodwise, it's pretty good. Nothing phenomenal or lousy. I'm consistently surprised that this area can really support so many Chinese restaurants within a quarter-mile radius. I was trying to buckle my daughter into her car seat and my car door opened into the car next to me - not hard by any means. Next thing I know, the owner (or an employee) from Zen's (wearing the shirt) came running out and started yelling at me that my car door "smashed" his. I was dumbfounded. There was no mark on his (dirty) car. I had my 2 young children with me, so I was not interested in a fight. I asked him what he wanted from me and he just kept repeating/yelling that I hit his car. So I offered him $.50 because again, there was absolutely no dent in his car. He started yelling again. Then my husband came out of another store and asked what the problem was. The Zen's guy said again, "she smashed my car with her car door." My husband said, "is there a dent?" So the Zen's guy said, "well, no, but she should apologize." I said, "I'm sorry. And I will be sure to never patronize your store." He said, "Good! I don't need more business!" So if you're thinking about trying Zen's Chinese in Bellmore - Don't! When Jen' s first opened the food was a cut above the locally available Chinese take out in the Merrick-Bellmore area. Unfortunately after enjoying a rise in local support Jen's seems to have rewarded it's customer base with a reduction in everything that made their food tolerable in the first place. Tonight we tried the shrimp and chicken in cashew nuts. The shrimp were dime sized and tasted like they were on the old side, decidedly fishy smelling. There was more water chestnuts than anything else. The sauce had no flavor, almost like a mix of salt, water and oil. The boneless ribs tasted like they were cooked hours ago, dried out, tough, and burnt. Even the pork lo mein was tasteless, dry, with noodles that were obviously reconstituted in boiling water prior to assembling the dish rendering them pasty and inedible. It's incredible that there is no good authentic Chinese food in the Merrick Bellmore area. Jen's has taken a sharp turn for the worse. Crave good Chinese? I was driving by and decided to give this place a try. It is no longer Jen's it is now Zen's. I ordered Scallion pancakes, dumplings, and Fish with black bean sauce. The Scallion pancakes were wet and raw, not cooked through. Bad choice into the garbage. The dumplings were good, not homemade definitely the mass produced type you buy in the Chinese market in the frozen food isle. My main course, Fish with black bean sauce was in reality Chicken with shrimps and eggplant. Not what I ordered at all. It was good though. Don't think I'll be back. My family and I tried Zen's last night for the first time. We haven't had Chinese food in months because we've had trouble finding a good place and gave up. Last night was cold and we were tired of pizza and craving some good Wonton soup. We googled, found that Zen's had a 4.8 rating. Best of all, it was close to home so we tried them and so glad we did! I picked up the order and was able to see that the place was spotless, even the kitchen area. The order was packed perfectly. Each item was huge (enough for 2 days). The wonton soup was delicious and not too salty. Nothing was greasy, not even the egg rolls. I ordered chicken with baby eggplant and garlic and it was the best I have ever had. Not greasy at all and the garlic sauce was amazing! My son had chicken with pan fried noodles and it was loaded with fresh vegetables. We also had sesame chicken (all white meat) and shrimp egg foo young. I really have never had Chinese food as good as this place and we will definitely be back! read more
