First of all, Zhang Ping, who is the Owner of Zhang's is a CHINESE name. That's really important to understand. Second of all, China has some of the most diverse regions in their Country & so their food reflects that. Food in Szechuan is vastly different from the food in Shanghai. China is HUGE. It's 4 million square miles with 22 different PROVINCES & home to 2 billion people. It's the 3rd largest Country by land mass. Many American Asian restaurants add Japanese, Vietnamese & Thai & even Korean dishes to their menu to make it more appealing to pedestrian customers. I HIGHLY recommend people understand who the owner is native to & order that cuisine bc GENERALLY the other cuisines are going to be average & Americanized. I wanted to try this place bc of the wildly inconsistent reviews. My intention was to order only Chinese based on the Owner's ethnicity. I was really hoping it would be great dining experience. The restaurant is located in a pretty generic strip mall next to Ashlawn Coffee in Old Saybrook. There is ample parking & they seem to hold standard hours. It is nothing fancy as far as decor. The music was a little annoying frankly. It was synthesized Chinese pop. I would've preferred your standard Asian classical instrumental. They have 4 person booth seating which is predominant, with some 2 & 4 tops throughout. Yes. the interior looks slightly tired but nothing was tatty & honestly cleanliness to me is far more important. Overall, I found the food to be average. Sadly it seems the restaurant's identity & cuisine has gotten sucked into the American Chinese cuisine category. This seems to have been driven by the locals patronizing it OR the kitchen are just not very good at the execution of their cuisine. I ordered the Szechuan ravioli which was disappointing. It came on a plate of bland chili oil & peanut sauce which is not standard. (It's also usually Szechuan won tons or dumplings in chili oil). The appetizer has likely been adjusted bc Mgmt found it was too spicy for your average American customer (which is hugely unfortunate bc it's delicious when executed well). Either that or again, it's the kitchen's poor execution of the dish. It was okay but the sauce which is an integral part of this dish was neither homemade nor flavorful. It seemed like it was jarred sauces mixed together. So, disappointing overall. I also ordered the Salt & black pepper shrimp which I was looking forward to. Sadly it was just okay. Small bay shrimp (usually it's Large Oceanic Shrimp). The batter was fine but not amazing. It sat on a mixture of wok fried zucchini, carrots, & large asparagus (that were cooked perfectly al dente which I was extremely happy about). It also came with 6 small slivers of jalapeño which was pretty paltry to what you normally get. It was fine but again not great. It just seems that this place is just plugging along as an Americanized Chinese restaurant. I had real hopes it would be great but it was just your average pedestrian Chinese. I also felt the food was OVERPRICED for what you are getting. The ravioli was $7.50 & My S&P shrimp was $18.95. Most informal authentic Chinese restaurants only charge $5- & 15.95 TOPS & it's a nice portion of Oceanic shrimp. I found Zhangs to be pretty average for standard American Chinese food. read more

The food was great and it is reasonably priced. I loved the tuna rolls. Not too much rice and there were large pieces of tuna. I asked for spicy mayo on the side. Only $7.50 per roll. so disappointed in the food.... steamed dumplings were fine but moo shu pork was awful. I gagged on a huge piece of pork fat?Wasn't sure what it was to be honest but just absolutely lost my appetite. Our young waitress was lovely and attentive so i didn't complain. We have been coming to Zhang's about once a week but last couple of times, food has been sub par. Last time I'm going here! EVER Last night ordered $82 of dinners. EGG ROLLS half filled, SPARE. RIBS tough, PINAPPLE FRIED RICE dry, SESAME CHICKEN too much gel goop dry & togh over cooked, LO MEIN CHICKEN extremely dried no oil or sauce. CHICKEN BROCCOLI good. From the past I know they nickel and dime you. Everything extra. So had to order the dry noodles which other places give real ones with the fried oil & Usually come with a meal but I had to order them so they sent only two bags, SIZE OF HALF OUNCE CHIP BAGS SENT 2 for 4 people for four dinners. THEY charged me $.80 FOR 2BAGS. Then I know I have to order extra duck sauce as they only send a few. So I asked them for the extra duck sauce which I know is an extra charge as with garlic sauce. USUALLY I GET THE ROUND 1 inch height container that hold 4oz. This is what pissed me off. They send me 2 ounces and a little cup along with the three packets of duck sauce and charge $3.75 for 2 ounces of duck sauce. The egg rolls were dry and half filled for $6/2. The chicken lo mein was EXTREMELY DRY JUST DRY NOODLES. Had to add the 3 out of 4 packets of soy sauce. Just dry along with sesame chicken over cooked and hard. Mind you EVERYTHING WAS $1.00 each more than on the current menu. Each meal was a dollar more including the egg rolls, spare ribs and dinners. Got 3 packets duck 4 soy sauce and that mustard that I always tell them not to send. For $82 it was horrible and they are Not very friendly. Must find a better Chinese restaurant read more

Much bigger inside than I thought. It was clean and everyone was friendly. We ordered chicken lo mein, pork fried rice, spring rolls, and crab ragoon. Everything was absolutely delicious. If I could give zero stars I would. Ordered gluten free general tso and pork fried rice combo. I was so happy because I thought I could finally have general tsos chicken as it says online it can be sautéed instead of fried and then it would be made gluten free. They even went as far as to label my container GF on top. When I got home and started eating I knew it was too good to be true. I called and the man on the phone told me that it's not really gluten free, the chicken is still breaded with wheat flour and fried, it's only the sauce that's gluten free. How in the hell does that make sense?????? Then the guy on the phone told me it was my fault. Ridiculous. Not worth the trip. I was looking for a quick dinner after a movie at the Westbrook cinema and one of the folks with me said their family loves Zhangs. I was surprised that there was a good Chinese nearby that I hadn't tried yet. Turns out- Yelp was right. It's adequate. I got sushi. The others got orange chicken and pad Thai. I couldn't finish the sushi. The pieces were so huge and also lacked flavor. The others ate enough to take the edge of the huger but no one had seconds. 3 stars are 100% for service- ordered online, very quick. Called to adjust the order and they were very pleasant. I'm very hard to please when it comes to Asian cuisine. I grew up a few miles north of Boston so dinner for us was Chinatown. The pork in the pork and Broccoli was either fatty or rubbery. I've been here plenty of times, the chinese food is good, and the japanese food is ok. The rolls are good, but do not, do not order Sashimi. I did today and the fish ended up tasting like water, with almost no flavor at all. I came here last weekend with my best friend when we couldn't decide where to eat. MY were we pleasantly surprised! I had never noticed Zhang's to be honest, usually going to Pizzaworks if I'm in that plaza, but that is going to change for sure. It was pretty empty while we were there for lunch, so we were seated immediately. We each ordered a drink, the crab rangoon and spring rolls to split for appetizers, and both got sushi. The crab rangoon and spring rolls were delicious! They weren't oily like a lot of other places. The sushi took a bit of time to come out, but knowing that they make it to order this didn't bother me at all, and it was definitely worth the wait! The fish was fresh and it tasted delicious! There were also offerings I had never had before, including one of the rolls that I ordered that came with seaweed on top! I got the California roll, the sushi gave me food poisoning. This is not authentic food, but even more so, it's not edible!

Whether you want sushi, Japanese or Chinese you will not be disappointed. Have eaten here many times over the years including thru COVID- it was one of the few places that stayed open for takeout. The quality of their food is the best in the area, definitely above the usual Asian take out. We have happily used them for many years, but the last time I ordered on line, they had removed Shrimp Egg Foo Young, my favorite, from their menu. I ordered something else, but when I went to pick it up, I asked the young man why it was no longer on the menu. He basically said it was because it was too much trouble to make. That was the last time I've used them. My local Chinese take-out in Old Lyme is good enough and they are quite happy to make this common menu item. We accidentally stumbled upon this gem while waiting for our train back to NYC. At first we were told the only restaurant in the area was a place with the word Monkey in the title. That sounded horrible so we were heading toward CVS when we saw Zhangs. They happily welcomed us and it was such a great experience. Excellent food and service. I had the Singapore Chow Mei Fun and my friend had the shrimp fried rice. So delicious and filling. The spring rolls were crispy and light. After reading all the reviews I really did not want to eat here but we couldn't find any other options in old Saybrook that where we could get our food to go; everything seemed to be closing by six. Anyway I had the shrimp and broccoli and it wasn't horrible but it was greasy and I did end up with a slight stomach ache the next day.
