The only reason I'm giving them two stars, instead of one star, is because the place was reasonably nicely decorated and the wait staff was polite. The food was less than mediocre and, despite them heavily promoting the sushi, I saw absolutely no activity behind the sushi bar, so I would not touch that. Came in here with a large group. We had looked at the take-out menu before coming in, and realized that the dinner menu was a bit pricier. I'd say the prices were slightly high for what it is. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is quite nice, with a large fountain in the entry and nice Chinese decor throughout the dining room. The dining room itself was a bit stuffy and warm, though. We ordered the Pu Pu Platter, which was good, but small for a large group. My entree, Chicken with Broccoli was again good, but on the smaller side. I tried some of my wife's chicken fried rice, that was ok as well. Nothing spectacular, but what you expect from a quality Americanized Chinese restaurant. The service was fair. Stopped here for a late Sunday lunch with some friends. We're not from the area but they. The restaurant offers Chinese food, sushi and even Thai food on their menu. As a group we got some of each. We heard good things about Zhang's so we got take out. The 'Chinese Vegetables' was broccoli and the Orange Flavored Beef was skimpy but that was okay because it was the consistency of shoe leather. The take out place down the street is far better and less expensive. I'll never go back. read more

Pleasantly decorated in traditional Chinese/American restaurant decor: the multi-sided paper lanterns with hanging tassels, lots of red, the obligatory goldfish tank. The food, however, is no cliche. Dishes are incredibly fresh and flavors stand out distinctly. Mrs. T is particularly fond of the sesame chicken. I've tried nearly everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. Where do I begin. Overpriced, poor service and poor quality. Ordered egg rolls, chicken & broccoli and lemon chicken. The lemon chicken was a piece of fried chicken served on top of iceberg lettuce with the sauce in a bowl. Chicken & broccoli was fine. Zhangs is my favorite sit down Chinese restaurant. The fried noodles are the best I've ever had. I had the orange chicken. Chicken was very crispy and sauce was delicious. Just ate here for dinner last night. We had two sushi rolls which were very very tasty. Horrible! I had been here years ago and it was good but oh my this restaurant has not aged well. It mostly wants to be a sushi restaurant it use to be just Chinese. Their Chinese food is deplorable. I ordered roast pork with Chinese vegetables, I have no idea what I received and tasted. There was zucchini in it and itsy, bitsy pieces of grizzled trimmings of something. Never ever have I thought about the cat rumors in Chinese restaurants till tonight . I have never seen anything as revolting, than they argued with me that every restaurant has there own recipes. My argument is yes that is certainly true only you need to feature the ingredients of the dish ordered. I asked if we could order one egg roll, she said yes but brought 2 greasy awful egg rolls. They just lost a customer. I have been going to this establishment for 20 years and I will never go back because of the way I was treated tonight. I ordered chicken with cashews to go for the first time ever from this restaurant after having ordered it from many many other restaurants over the years. When I got home and opened it I found it was fried chicken and fatty dark meat at that. Also there were less than 1/2 a dozen cashews In it. In all the years I've ordered cashew chicken from other restaurants it has never come as fried chicken. I can't eat fried food and never would have ordered it if I suspected it was fried. Also cashew chicken by name should have more than 1/2 a dozen cashews in it. My husband ate his dinner while I ate a sandwich so I could eat with him. After we finished we went to return my dish. The woman manager was very rude and said they've made this dish the same way for 20 years and that all their chicken dishes are fried, which is not true, by the way, and I never ordered the cashew chicken so I wouldn't know how they've made it for 20 years. She knew we'd been coming there for many years but obviously didn't care. She argued with us and kept walking away in the middle of the conversation several times to take care of other customers and refused to give us our money back. What a shame to lose long time great customers over $11.00 Not smart business practice. I refuse to be treated so rudely after all the years and money I spent in their restaurant. TAKE A PASS FOLKS! Called to place a huge (20 individual person) take out order only to have the man who answered / take the order rush through the order with me --- at 11:15 a.m. you certainly were not BUSY! I arrived early and stated that I wanted to check the order but was rushed out instead. Returned to office only to find a missing order and they combined 3 sushi orders into one. Called, then had to go back where I was told that I was in the wrong for not telling them that the sushi orders were individual. Um...I sure did when I called and ordered! Got back to the office only to be told that the Pineapple Fried Rice was wrong. I called again, (same man answered) only to find out that the fried rice includes shrimp and chicken. Well -- that person can't eat the fish -- and there is nothing on the menu about fish and chicken added to the rice. Then, I get to my order - Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce. Well folks ...again, not on the menu but they added Peanut Butter to the sauce....good thing I'm not allergic -- but nevertheless --- it wasn't Sesame Sauce. Zhangs....a few pointers for you -- 1) don't be in such a rush with orders, provide PROFESSIONAL customer service, and 2) rewrite your menu to BE CLEAR ON WHAT IS IN YOUR DISHES BEFORE YOU CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS OR WORSE to someone!!!! All three were disappointing. In the hot food category, their egg rolls which used to be plump and very good were smaller and greasy. The spring rolls were simply greasy. They used to have a kick ass Szechuan Dumplings appetizer, while it didn't suck, still quite tasty in fact but it wasn't quite was it used to be. The sauce was watery and didn't quite have the flavor they used to have. Those were tried both times we had Chinese with same results. For sushi, what used to be fairly large portions have been reduced in size; the fish wasn't quite as fresh, and all in all disappointing. It's very unfortunate because this IMO was the only good Asian food restaurant in town. I'll probably give them another shot just because of this but my expectations will be much lower. If they've made some kind of change recently, I hope they can reverse it. read more

Zhangs was always our favorite takeout and sometimes sit in restaurant for Chinese food in our area. I don't know what happened to this place..is there a new owner? Anyway I had to toss out most of my takeout order last night due to some really odd textures,tastes and general lack of freshness. I literally gagged after eating a few bites of the Szechuan dumplings covered with a thick greasy sweet peanut sauce but I think the meat inside may have gone bad. Mei fun noodles were mushy and tasted like eggs gone bad with wilted veggies and onions. Hot and sour soup was actually sweet but swimming in grease. All went into the trash after a few bites. What to do? We are a busy working couple who enjoy an occasional takeout meal. Another local restaurant crossed off our list. read more

Overall, Zhang's had pretty good food. However, my problem with it is the fact that its prices are too high. You can get a more elegant atmosphere and better food for similar prices at Taste of China in Clinton. Zhang's charges a fair deal for its Chinese food with little reason to do so. Personally, I think they up the charges just because they give you a place to sit down inside. They are the only local Chinese restaurant like that and therefore can get away with higher prices. Nevertheless, I'd much rather go to Golden Garden (much cheaper, just as good food) than mortgage the house by going to Zhang's. I don't mind paying higher prices, but I expect something more than a mildly cheesy parrot cup for doing so. At Taste of China in Clinton, they actually have nice silverware, stellar service, and a clean, classy atmosphere -- so, if you're going to pay more for something, pay for that. read more

We went there New Year's day at around 7pm. Only three other small parties in the restaurant. We were seated at a table with no silverware and didn't actually get any till after the sushi was served. No napkins either. The sushi was by far the worst I've had in CT. The nori on one of their roll specials overwhelmed the meager pieces of fish in their "special roll", the other rolls were essentially without any real flavor. The fish was probably fresh but the sushi chef just had no clue how to make sushi. The poor guy was probably a sous chef thrown into the job. We then an order of Pad thai that wasn't remotely what Pad thai looks or tastes like. My friend who i shared it with said it tasted like spaghetti with ketchup. I kid you not. It was awful. I cannot believe this place was ranked anywhere near the top in any category. read more
