I feel obligated to warn others about my terrible experience with Osaka in East Lyme on Post Road. My family and friends ordered takeout, and the wait time was completely unacceptable. When we finally got the food home, it was even worse--bland, tasteless,  missing items , and portions that looked like lunch sizes despite paying full price. When I called to address the issue, I was told the owner/manager, Alex, was "too busy" to deal with customer complaints. The host was equally unprofessional and dismissive, offering no help whatsoever. The next day, I was told to come in with my receipt for a full refund. When I showed up, Alex completely backtracked and offered only 25% back, blaming "tough times" and low profits. That is not the customer's problem--it's unacceptable to mislead customers and then refuse to stand behind your word. This place is clearly poorly managed, lacks basic customer service, and does not value its customers at all. I strongly recommend staying away. read more

Terrible Terrible ! Worst service ever, had to ask for everything- place was dirty and sticky tables and floors - salad had a spec of dressing, soup was at 1/3 of a full cup and cold. Looks like their standards might be slipping. Ordered takeout through their website which was very simple. 15 minutes to pick up was exceptional. Packed nicely in paper bags. The Dallas didn't seem as fresh and crisp at it usually does. The miso soup was good. But the main course seemed lacking. Ordered a couple Bento boxes and the tempura seemed to have been over cooked. More crispy and greasy and the items inside lacking taste. Was disappointed in the white rice as it seems they may have switched to jasmine rice with it being too dry. I really liked the sushi here. There was a good selection, and the sushi seemed really fresh. The sushi also had a good filling-to-rice ratio -- there was not a lot of rice, which I liked. The Super Dragon Roll was delicious, and the Mango Lobster Roll was good too (the lobster in it was tempura lobster, and the mango was sweet, juicy, and refreshing). Service was also great. The waitress was very friendly. Would definitely recommend and would love to return if I ever was back in the area. read more

The quality of this restaurant has plummeted! We were there with a party of 14 and the service was horrific. The chef, who may also be the manager, was rude and less than entertaining. He put rice on my plate when I had ordered noodles and I told him; it was no big deal, I just switched plates with my husband. He snarled at me and started to berate the woman who took our order, I was embarrassed for her. He NEVER spoke to us, much less did any of the customary tricks we were accustomed to. Drinks that were ordered together came sporadically - mine arrived at the end of my meal! The soup and steak had a foul taste, and he flung the food on our plates as if he hated us all. We were not rude or loud, but very patient, assuming he was having a bad night. I called Osaka the next day, to express my displeasure. I was told the manager would be there at 5:30, so I called back at that time and was then told he did not come in. I called back twice the next day and, once again, was told twice he was not there. But when I started to tell the person on the phone about our horrible experience he said, wait let me get the manager (after he had just told me the manager was not there!). I could hear a conversation in the background, and when he returned to the phone he said 'the manager does not want to talk to you'!!!!!!!! I was furious and let him know how unprofessional he was. I do not usually write bad reviews, I was calling to make him aware that we had a terrible time, hoping they would at the very least apologize. We have been to Osaka numerous times in the past, always made reservations and had a good time. Sorry to say this restaurant has lost our business. Had the manager, at the very least, spoke to me and showed a little remorse, we would have chalked it up to 'everybody has a bad day' and likely returned in the future. A final note...we were there at 6:30 on a Saturday night and unlike every other time we have been there there were many empty seats. I ordered 2 Bento boxes for a total of $61 including tax! The boxes were suppose to include one sushi roll and four pieces. They were not in the package that was presented to me at pickup. When I called they tried say it was my fault for not picking up the whole order! I replied that I picked up what was presented to me. The reply was ,quote: "the only thing you can do is come pick up up". No offer to refund a partial cost or nothing! I WONT GO BACK! I love having a Japanese restaurant close to home but if this evening is indicative of their service, this restaurant won't last long. They had two people visibly working. The sushi chef and a young man that I've never seen before working the front. We were seated and after 10 minutes, he brought over the water. We told him that we were ready to order and he said that it would be a bit. He then told the sushi chef that we were ready to order so another 10 minutes passed and then the sushi chef took our order. No idea why the man working the front couldn't take our order. That's strange. As we waited for our sushi, we noticed a couple that were seated before us were ignored and still had their menus in front of them. Another couple was then seated and they caught the young man and asked for alcohol drinks and were told they weren't available. They then sat and waited and also were ignored. After 20 minutes, the first couple got up and left. Another 10 minutes passed, then the second couple got up and left. No one ever took their orders! Then an older man was seated and he was seated with a menu and water but then also ignored. He left after 15 minutes because his order was never taken. We watched three tables drink their water and leave after being ignored. When our sushi was brought out, we had to ask for plates and soy sauce trays. The sushi was good so that's the one positive. The sushi chef brought out our bill. How can you keep a restaurant in business with service like that? Why does the young man not know how to take orders? He didn't seem to know how to do the job and lacked confidence. Why isn't he being trained? With 6 tables seated and many to go orders, where were the other servers? read more

This place was a favorite of mine for years. They have plummeted in food, service and ambiance. I went last week and thought it was rough night with staff call outs. The tables were dirty, they didn't know how to make a basic drink at the bar, the food came out weird... but I got take out tonight and it is officially confirmed as "down the tubes" for places to eat. I won't be back. :( The pictures here are supposed to be $27 Korean BBQ, $9 chicken tempura and pork fried rice. The Korean BBQ was mostly bones, the chicken tempura was two, two inch long pieces of chicken the width of a pencil in breading and mostly vegetable tempura and the pork fried rice smelled like seafood and tasted like old meat! This review is mainly based on service of one particular hostess/server named Chloe. We got to our reservation early with six of us looking forward to the entertainment of hibachi with us as we were out of town visiting. As soon as we walked in was rude from the beginning . She was more worried about walk ins verses us who made a reservation in the am. It continued, her rude demeanor as she served us and made our drinks. The chef and food was amazing but she would be the reason why we would never go back. To end the night, she decided she was worth 20% gratuity and added it on herself to our bill. The staff and chefs are always welcoming and friendly, truly a place worth visiting if you love sushi and if you don't they always have hibachi which is entertaining all in its own. We had a terrible experience tonight. If i could give negative stars i would. To start out the cook never gave us any sauces or ask how we wanted our filets cooked. He didn't talk to us or give us any entertainment which you normally would go to hibachi for, barely even looked at us. Then when he gave our filets to the couple we shared the table with he suggested we "switch plates" and when he told him no, because they had already gotten their shrimp, he proceeded to go around the table, take the man's plate with his DIRTY fork and shuffle it onto my sisters plate. My husband had to tell him to stop and that we did not want food off someone else's plate he took it back off. The couple got up and left. We should have left too but stupidly we stayed. I didnt realize he used the dirty fork and i found out after we got the bill. Now lets talk about that bill. My husband, my sister and I all ordered extra rice and my husband ordered extra broccoli. They charged us 9 times for extra rice and 3 times for extra broccoli. WE GOT NONE OF IT. we didnt even get the one extra serving that we asked for and they charged us 3 times EACH. My sister did not want to eat her food, understandably, and when we tried to clear all this up with the waitress all she did was give us 20$ off which didn't even cover my sisters meal. I talked to her again because i was very mad at this point and she said she "just works here and she can't do anything about it" and i tell her again that they charged us 9 TIMES for extra rice we didn't get she took another 20$ off instead of fixing the receipt and comping my sisters meal. We ended up taking it all home for the dogs and we found out that they made the other couple pay for their whole meal instead of only their drinks. Not to mention that the owner or manager never came to talk to us to try to get this cleared up. They were not busy and even if they were that is no excuse for the service they provided tonight. Given it's location, Osaka is actually one of the better sushi establishments you will find on the CT shoreline. We came here on a slower Sunday (Father's Day), so we did not experience any of the wait or dinner rush mentioned in other reviews. The service and food came fast enough, for apps we got some Soft Shell Crab, Agedashi Tofu, and Sashimi consisting of mackerel and squid. The Agedashi was the surprise standout here, with generous portions of lightly fried silken tofu paired with a light dashi - we simply could not get enough. While the soft shell crab was serviceable, I was not a fan of the large amounts of imitation crab strips they threw in there as well. For entrees, we ordered a Beef Yaki Udon, Imperial Roll, and a Honeymoon Roll. The Udon here was the winner, with the noodles being soft yet pliant and covered with a light soy based sauce. Rolls were well done enough, but not anything spectacular. The biggest disappointment, however, came in the desserts. While the actual ice cream inside the mochi were fine, the exterior mochi portion (which is usually chewy), was hard as a rock and essentially inedible. Despite the negative ending, Osaka is still worth a visit if you are in the area and need to satisfy your sushi cravings. read more

My husband and I have been here twice. We recently tried the hibachi meal here and it was delicious! The service was a bit slow because they only had one waitress, but she really tried her best to make sure we were comfortable. Solid takeout during covid. Our orders are always correct and quality stayed the same. We always get the same sushi and sashimi combo (comes with a basic salad and miso soup) and then, add makis and more sushi/sashimis with it it. The sashimis are standard - we always get the usual ikura, sake, maguro, and etc. No issue with the fish and cut sizes are average. They don't always have uni, though. Just a warning, they get super busy and haven't quoted the correct pick-up time. It's always another 15 minutes tacked onto their estimated time which is kind of okay for me. I'd rather be early and have sushi given to me right away than have it sitting there. read more
