This was the first time my husband and I have tried Zio John's. We came for an early dinner, Right when we walked in we were greeted and sat. The atmosphere was clean and comfy. The servings were large and the food delicious. We ordered fried ravioli as our appetizer. They came out hot and cheesy. We were looking at the online menu and decided to order the family feast spaghetti with a gondola and garlic bread which was around $23 . When we called to place the order we were told it was $31. Once we got there we went inside right away because we were close by when we placed the order and we figured that they added a salad because we saw the menu had a salad on it for about that price so we hurried up and went in to tell them but they said no we have it right what you ordered but the online menu is not correct . I kind of feel that we were deceived a little bit there and that's kind of false advertising yes they gave us the price on the phone but once we hung up and look back on the online menu we figured that they were just adding the salad to the feast . Outside looks great. Was torn between the spaghetti and lasagna. The staff is very friendly and courteous. Inside has a clean atmosphere and the tables were wiped Dolan immediately when customers left. The prices are reasonable and portions and decent sized. I'm not sure where to start with this review. There's just so much to be said. Our party of 4 came in around dinner time, just before 6, and were promptly seated. Then, nothing. I had to make my way up to the bar/drink station after ~15 minutes of no service to ask for drinks. Mind you, there were less than 15 people seated in this restaurant, with 5 or so waitstaff working. Once we were able to actually order (another 15 minutes), our starter salads did come out rather quickly, but were "limp", lacked of any flavor, and were full of giant, un-chopped red onion slices. Entrees took another 20 to 30 minutes - we'd only ordered simple pasta dishes which should take no longer than 10. You're a pasta / pizza place and you should have that ready to go; on point. Bottom line, I will never visit a Zio Johno's again. It's cookie cutter "Midwest Italian" and is very overpriced to boot. The owners do not care, and as long as Cedar Rapids / Marion keeps ordering from their restaurants, they never will. read more

Whenever someone suggests Zio's, I always wince and think "there's got to be better choices." There are...but stay with me. Service was timely all night. Portion size was good and so was the food. We had a pizza which was better than expected. It was good! The chicken strips and fries, again, not award winning, but better than most. 5 Stars for the amazing food!! Just don't expect anything that resembles service or reasonable prep time. I was here twice and waited 1hr each time for pizza. Servers don't check in much, you have to flag them down if you want anything or a refill. Exception, if your lucky enough to get Laura as a server you can expect stellar service. I didn't have her serve me but I watched her with other guests. She's a gem and should really find a place where her talents are better rewarded. read more

We've had positive experiences here in the past, but this last visit was 100% negative. Our food took much longer than expected. We finally called and there was no apologies or justification for the delay, just that it was "on its way". The delivery car wasn't marked and there was no apologies or pleasantries from the driver and to top it all off the bread was cold and the spaghetti was gross. So gross that ALL 8 of the kids at the gathering wouldn't eat it. Then we email the place to let them know about our sub-par experience and not even a response. It's the first real food I've had since getting my wisdom teeth removed and I'd rather have had another bowl of soup or ice cream to get SOME flavor. The cheese ravioli was so bland. There was no flavor to the cheese inside at all; it honestly tasted like nothing. And the mozzarella sticks? Gross. I must start by saying I'm surprised at the low rating this place has! I have been going here for years since they were in a mini building. The gyros here is amazing it is served open faced with tons of lamb meat. Some items on the menu are hit and miss but overall everyone in my party left happy and I also have to mention what I call "candy bread" that they use for all their sandwiches and garlic bread making it taste way better than the competition which is....that's right I'm in Marion... My friend and I stopped here for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon while I was visiting my sister. I hadn't actually heard anything about this restaurant before, having mostly gone to chains while in the greater Cedar Rapids area. I'm really glad we stopped here instead of going somewhere else, though. They had a decent selection on the menu...there were several items that I was interested in ordering, from some simple pasta dishes, to some fun toppings on the pizza, to sandwiches. Our service was a little bit slow, especially considering it was late afternoon and there were only two other people there. My friend ordered one of their specialty pizzas (based on recommendation from our waitress), and he was really satisfied with it. I ordered a chicken parmigian sandwich...which was messy, but very good. It was simple...chicken, cheese, and red sauce...but why mess with a good thing? There wasn't anything that I would have added to it! I was surprised by how reasonable the price was...between the two of us we got out for about $20, with tip. The decor had some really funny statues...like a Caesar whos head was smaller than his own forearm, and fun paintings on the table. We liked it. My family and I have had take out from here multiple times, and each and every time they've messed up our order AND have taken about twice as long as stated at the time of our order. Today we ordered food here because of a fundraiser, but it was the last time I'll pay for their mediocre food. Yes, the food is not good, and the service is terrible, so why eat here? Maybe you like having to haggle over the order YOU called in. Maybe you like ho hum pasta covered in sauce that makes Prego look world class with tasteless meatballs. It includes their delicious spaghetti with meat sauce, fantastic and addictive toasted garlic bread, and a gondola(large sandwich using untoasted homemade bread. The chef salad was the size of a dinner salad, maybe about a few pieces of lettuce with meet and cheese. It was definitely not worth $10. They are charging too much for not enough. We've been eating here for years. I'm not sure why. If there were another Italian restaurant in Marion, we'd go with them. Dining in, even at off peak times, service is often agonizingly slow. The food is almost palatable. Their marinara is awful, and the garlic bread is oddly sweet and not very garlicky. You either love it or hate it. I don't love it. Delivery is usually pretty much on time with their ETA, but it's worth noting that the salad you get in the dining room is NOT what you get when you order delivery! It's nothing but a styrofoam box of lettuce mix and a 2oz cup of dressing. You pay the same price, sure, but it's just a sweaty handful of lettuce and a bit of ranch. read more

Zio's is a local chain that started out as a carry-out, spaghetti by the bucket place. They upgraded their stores and menu a few years ago, adding steaks and seafood items and full table service. They can get crazy busy when they're running some of their annual specials like customer appreciation month. If you come to these events be ready to check your attitude at the door and take a chill pill. The food is very good for the money, one of the best values in town. Zio Johno's is a family-friendly Italian restaurant that's long on value and short on surprise. I'm a fan simply because my bill for three was roughly half of what I'd pay at Olive Garden or Biaggi's. Granted, the menu isn't as extensive - here the focus is on pizzas and red sauces. But if you're in the mood for comfort food, you can't beat it. The place has it's charms - there are little marble busts sitting on a ledge near the entrance, and our table had been painted with a quant gondola scene on top. Service was a bit on the slow side, but friendly. And the garlic bread - you get a LOT with your meal! I ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and a side of sausage. The chicken was dried out cubes of chicken- would be surprised if they cooked it there. It was covered in canned, sliced black olives, and tasteless shreds of Parmesan. The "Caesar" dressing was just Italian bottled dressing. Homemade croutons? Me thinks not. The sausage- I thought it would be links. It was actually a bowl of what I think is pizza topping sausage. I didn't eat most of my dinner- and gave it to my son who was very hungry and not satisfied with his shrimp salad. From service to food, one of the worst dining experiences ever. This is the first time in my life, I did not leave a tip. I don't know how it was communicated, but after our meal, the manager (I'm assuming) came over and asked us if everything was okay. Always great food at a great price! I love their pizza and their lunch specials are great. I've never left Zio Johno's feeling hungry and have always had leftovers when I order a dinner. Decided to take advantage of the deal where you bring 2 cans of non-perishable food into the restaurant and get a plate of free spaghetti. Big mistake! 1.5 hours later, we only had half the drinks we ordered and no food. We decided to walk out at which point they were headed to our table with our food. Part of our party of 7 had already left so we asked the staff to box up our food to go. After waiting another 20 minutes for that to happen with a reminder that we were still waiting, we finally left with our food! Got home and discovered we were missing 3 salads and an order or spaghetti! My advice to Zio's management is don't make promises you can't keep! I placed an order for pick-up....the young lady told me 20 mins, only to get there 20 minutes later to be told that they never received an order. With no remedy offered, if you're gonna ask the city of Marion for money because of road construction, you should at least ensure that you have good service in the first place as this isn't the first time we've had issues with placing orders for pickup/delivery. read more

The service was very good and the atmosphere is very nice. The sandwich I ordered was great with the chips being a little undercooked. The TV by when you walk in has a line going through it that could be fixed. I wish they brought out the garlic bread before I had received my food.
