My second time at Zoomak! My friend and I were in the area and craving Korean food and I remembered really enjoying it 2yrs ago when I came here. Their space is two floors - their bottom half has more space for larger groups I believe. Really enjoyed the food!! We got their kimchi fried rice and their KFC (Korean fried chicken) and a side of kimchi. This was WAY too much food for 2 people because their portion sizes are that big!! And also very affordable! Zoomak's a refined Korean restaurant with beautiful wooden interior, 2 story seating areas, and dim cozy lighting. All the dishes they put out were super delicious with slightly modern and refined upgrades. Little bit of this little bit of that I dont usually find in traditional Korean food but all the more pleasantly surprising. Service was quick, polite, and standard. My only critique is that where I'm from (California) all bonchan comes complimentary and the portion sizes are much larger for the price point. I accept that things might be different up here in Canada so I will give the 5 stars anyways but just a heads up for anyone traveling. Came here for their limited set meal but sadly came too late into the day and it was all sold out. So definitely come early if you want to get it! I ended up getting the beef Ssam bap and it was really good!! Perfectly seasoned and they give you a lot of food for the price. I recently went to Vancouver for vacation. This restaurant was on my bookmarks, since they're known for authentic Korean cuisine. The restaurant is located in downtown Vancouver, near the Gastown clock. Note that it's mostly street parking there! The restaurant has an upstairs and downstairs seating area. We got led to the upstairs portion of the restaurant. The ambiance was cozy and stylish, with Korean decor mixed with contemporary design. Service was on and off. There was one woman who wasn't the friendliest when we came in. She asked if we had a reservation which we didn't, but we got seated right away. Another server checked on us frequently and asked how everything was. She was smiling everytime she came by. The former woman kept coming to ask us if we were done eating with our food. I think she could tell that I got annoyed, because she apologized for asking. Since we came in at 1:30 pm, the restaurant ran out of the han sang tray. Instead, I decided to go with the yook hoe bibimbap. My boyfriend got the beef bulgogi ssam tray. The server did notify us that there would be a 30 minute wait for the food, but it felt like the food came out faster. We had also ordered mocktails. My gulangyu breeze tasted a bit watered down. I didn't finish the drink. My boyfriend chugged his blueberry yuzuade drink. When they bought out the food, I was amazed. The portions were big and picturesque. I almost didn't want to eat the food. Once I mixed up my bibimbap, it was an explosion of flavors. I could tell that the ingredients were high quality and fresh. However, there was a lot of rice, which I struggled to finish. I wasn't a fan of the seaweed soup, since the taste was a bit too strong for me. My boyfriend enjoyed his beef bulgogi ssam bap tray. It was satisfying, eating everything wrapped inside the cabbage. I did feel that the side dishes were a bit small, in comparsion to the rice and bulogig. Regardless, his Doenjang - jjigae was amazing. I tried the stew, and I couldn't stop eating it. The stew had so much depth, and it was comforting to eat. Plus, it had a nice kick to it. I definitely recommend this restaurant! The food was amazing. The service was fine. First time at Zoomak and we were blown away by how good everything was! Came for a birthday dinner (no freebies unfortunately) but as a big group, we were able to try a lot of different things. Tables were decently spaced a part, and made the whole experience feel a bit more elevated. We booked a table but still had to wait ~20 minutes for our table. We ordered 3 rounds of the Ban Chan Trio, Dwaeji Galbi Ssam, Bossam Ssam, Jeon, Sweet Soy Sauce KFC, and Makgeolli Jogae Jjim. My favourite has got to have been either the ssam or the jogae jjim. The clams were all cooked perfectly and full of flavour with a clean taste. We opted to have no thai chilis since I can't eat spicy but it was still really flavourful. The meat for the ssam were both super tender and cooked really well. Nothing felt like it was overcooked and/or too hard to eat. Super impressed by the taste of everything. Nothing was too salty or lacking in flavour. They definitely did a great job elevating Korean classic dishes. It is on the pricy side but for sure you're getting quality for what you're paying for. My 2nd attempt at getting Zoomak's lunch set and I was prepared this time. We showed up at 11:31am on a Saturday and by ~11:50 they were already sold out. So, come early if you want that set. We ended up getting the unagi and pork cheek -- both excellent. The unagi was plump and tender, but I wished it had more eel sauce. The pork cheek? Chef's kiss. Fatty, rich, and balanced perfectly with a tangy, acidic sauce that cut through it all. The kimchi & kimchi pancake were standout sides for sure. Loved getting to try all the different banchan, and not having to commit to ordering a big dish. I think there are better Korean restaurants in the greater Vancouver area but would 100% come back for solely the lunch set. read more

Came here for lunch for the second time, and while the food tastes good, the service was INCREDIBLY SLOW. From the time we sat down, we probably waited around 45 minutes before our food finally came. We had to go up to the waitress to check in and her response was "I think maybe it should be ready soon." If you have time to leisurely take a two hour lunch on a weekday, I would give this place a try. Patience is definitely a virtue here. Also, the most popular Hansang set sells out within ~ an hour after opening, so definitely come early if this is what you want order! read more

We came by for happy hour/early dinner and ordered the following: HH yook hoe HH mini kimchi jeon HH fried boneless chicken Japchae Kimchi Mulkooksoo Makgeolli Jogae Jjim Hang jeong ssam I quite enjoyed the yook hoe although the portion size was tiny and since the taro chips were so thin, they kept breaking on us. The clams came in a very generous portion and the flavouring was quite good. Fried chicken was very juicy although the batter a bit thick for my personal preference. If you go here please have a reservation. We were lucky to be able to just walk in for a group of 4, but we still had to wait a little. The place is super nice and is a nice vibe! The area has a lot of stores nearby and if you buy from these stores such as Stussy, Aesop, (I think reformation not sure) you get a 10% discount on your food. Lots of small shops and dessert nearby + it's really pretty! Service was good and helpful throughout the night. They forgot our extra sides that we bought so they just gave it to us for free! Everything here is shareable which is nice. The Spicy Soondubu Jigae was filling and good but not the best I have had. Yook Hoe was also good if you like beef tartare. My favorites were the pancake (thick but also super crunchy) and the pork cheek han sang. I wanted the pork belly but they ran out when we got there. I've never had han sang before so I don't have too much to compare to but it was amazing!!! A bit expensive but it's what price you pay for having a nice dinner or lunch place usually! Zoomak recently won Best Korean from the Vancouver Magazine Awards, so our family decided to try it out. They don't have any online reservation systems, so I emailed them a suggested day and time, and they confirmed the reservation the day after. We arrived for an early dinner on a Saturday, and some street parking was available but not a lot. I would worry that nearby parking is harder to come by later in the evening. I should also note that Google Maps assumes the entrance is on Powell Street, but it is not. The entrance is on Alexander Street. After confirming our reservation, we were immediately seated. Being in Gastown, and a being called a tavern, I assume this place might be very dark, but it was the opposite. Actually quite bright, the space is is simple and mostly white and natural wood shades. We tried the following: - Gim (Baked Nori): OK. I couldn't really tell the difference between this and packaged nori. - Dwaeji Galbi Ssam: Good. The ssam wraps include both lettuce and shiso/perilla leaves, and the pork included slices and the bones. using shiso/perilla leaves was new to me, so I nice surprise. The pork slices were OK, but a bit dry. The bone pieces, although not useful in a wrap, had a lot of flavour, so worth chewing on. - Korean Fried Chicken (KFC): Very good. Came out fresh, tender and very juicy. A bit easier on the batter, which I liked, because if I eat KFC with too much batter, I find my mouth gets a bit raw from too much crunch. We tried both the sweet and the spicy sauces, but I preferred the spicy gochujang (which really wasn't that spicy. When eaten side-by-side, the sweet one is fine, but is much milder in flavour. - Makgeolli Jogae Jjim: Very good. A dish I've never had before at a Korean restaurant. Rice puffs added some nice texture, and also helped soak up that great broth. - Tteokbokki: Very good. I've had tteokbokki a few times, and have always been underwhelmed by what it is. However, this one felt like a complete dish. Great toppings (including the cheese) made this feel like a really good comfort dish. Service was quite good - friendly, attentive, and always came by at the right time. Overall, a nice meal. Food was quite good, more affordable than most Korean restaurants I've been to, good service, and pleasant space (although maybe not the most pleasant neighbourhood). Ordered the ssam bap bulgogi and the portion was extremely generous. So much food! It was delicious, although I couldn't finish it all. I definitely think it's a steal for $25, as you get quite a variety. I'd definitely come back, as I'd like to try more things. I'm not one to leave a negative review at a local business, but this experience was beyond disappointing, even if the food was delicious. I came here by myself for lunch on a weekday. I didn't have a reservation and I was given a choice of a seat outside at the patio or at the bar. I chose to sit outside. After getting settled, I browsed the menu and chose what I wanted to eat. I waited 15 minutes and no one came to follow up, check if I wanted to order, and I had to stand up and wave in the window to get a server's attention. The server finally came, and I asked to be switched inside to the bar, and when I sat down I ordered their Han Sang Pork Cheek lunch set. The great news is, the food was delicious! A platter of 12 different dishes along with a delicious seaweed soup and your choice of main. I really liked how I could try some of their other popular dishes with the sampler, like the fried chicken and the yukhoe. Unfortunately, what made my experience so bad was the cleanliness, care, and rude service that I received. As a solo diner, I understand if sometimes servers get caught up with other parties or larger tables. But as you can see from the photos, I was splashed at the bar, sitting next to a wet counter, and no one attempted to clean or take care of it. It was an uncomfortable dining experience and no one (even the people working at the bar) bothered to clean it up despite it being a bright blue liquid. The worst part, and the part that made the service awful, is that when I finished eating, the server asked, "are you done?" I expected her to ask if she could clear my plate, if I had wanted anything else, or if everything was okay. Instead, after I responded yes, she grabbed the machine and gave me my bill. I have never seen any service so dismissive and greedy for me to leave - I didn't ask for the bill, I didn't ask for the machine, and me being finished with my entree does not imply that I'm ready to pay. Zoomak has good food, but to feel ignored and disrespected (and also have a tip screen that has default tip options starting at 18%) is ridiculous. I won't be coming back, and the staff need some basic training. If your food is going to be priced at this price point, the service has to live up to the cost. read more

After walking around Gastown for a while, my partner and I stumbled across this really pretty but empty storefront called Zoomak. Curiously we decided to give it a try, but were confused because on Google it said they were closed. It turns out the restaurant's info had not been updated and it actually has lunch hours with a whole lunch menu. We decided to order the pork cheek hansang, and it was insane. It comes with a ton of banchan and every component of the tray was delicious and cooked well. Great blend of flavours. Comes with toasted bread. Loved this dish! KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) - we went for half sweet soy, half spicy. Excellent chicken, it's boneless and comes in a generous portion. Ho-Gam Jeon - Filling potato pancake with zucchini, shrimp, arugula, and parmigiano. Good dish, would have loved the sauce that it came with to have more kick or flavour. Kimchi Fried Rice - comes in a hot stone bowl. It's fun but feels like it was missing something. Mandu/ Korean Dumplings - comes with 6 dumplings. Good but wouldn't say it's a Zoomak specialty. Short rib lettuce wrap - They were sold out of the Pork Belly so we opted for the short ribs. Upscale korean on the edge of town. Not the nicest neighbourhood at night unfortunately. The fried chicken had a bit too much batter and got kind of a mouthful trying to finish the dish. I love their name - The 'Zoomak,' which means an old Korean tavern providing travelers with good food, drinks, and lodging. Their wooden decor, split level interior and casual ambiance does remind me of a 客棧 in Chinese. We arrived early, around 1130 on a weekday. And at that hour, there were already 4 tables seated. Seems like we all came early to order the popular 12 items tasting set served only during lunch and with limited availability each day. "Han Sang" = 12 Delicacies Tasting Tray 3 Choices: Pork Cheek $25 Unagi $27 Short Rib $29 We ordered the unagi and beef ribs lunch set. It was great to sample a variety of items. Although each tasting item was served in bite size portions on small plates, ordering the lunch set was quite filling...I couldn't finish the tender beef ribs and had to pack it to go (Note: There is a charge for takeout boxes). Everything tasted fine & above average. To highlight items that stood out for me, it may be the kimchi and fried chicken. My only complaint would be for the rice as it tasted like leftover rice or not heated properly -- the bowl of rice looked okay but it was cold, dry and hard. Service is excellent here, courteous and attentive. So I didn't have the heart to tell the server about the cold hard rice... even when server came around to offer free refill on soup or rice in the lunch set. I just added some hot soup to the rice and created my own version of congee. Overall, this is a cool place for Korean foods and I may opt to order an a la carte item next time in hopes of finding a signature dish to my liking. Korean food and drink place in Gastown. This place looks like it's pretty popular with the Koreans. Parking is pretty awful around here. Best to come after 2200. The place looks pretty hip and modern. The venue is split level (stairs go both up and down), so anyone with accessibility issues is limited to the bar area at the front. Staff are friendly and professional. I didn't try the food this time around, but the food being served at the surrounding tables sure looked good. The place has a pretty decent Korean drink selection. They have Cass and Kloud beers, as well as makgeolli (sparkling rice wine) served in a cute aluminum teapot and served in traditional aluminum drinking bowls. The beer was a bit pricy (larger bottle) but the makgeolli was pretty reasonable. Wouldn't mind coming back to try the food at some point. Recommended. read more

Another highly anticipated Korean restaurant crossed off the list! I've had many people tell me this place is good and so I finally checked it out with a friend on a Friday night. It seemed quite busy so reservations are recommended! I love the vibe of this restaurant - A clean dimly lit interior that feels homey but also sophisticated at the same time. We ordered based on my friend's recommendations and the food arrived promptly and everything looked very delicious! Beef tartare - I liked the Korean take with the gochujang but it was quite strong so I only enjoyed it for what it was but definitely prefer other style beef tartares that I've had. Bossam - A really well done crispy pork belly so delicious with the lettuce wraps!! We have a Chinese style equivalent of crispy pork belly and I was kind of making comparisons between the two and found that I may (?) enjoy Chinese style crispy pork more but with the Korean style lettuce wrap and ssamjang etc.... Nonetheless I still really loved this dish!! Seafood pancake - This is a good pancake for those who want to see actual seafood and texture, the crisp on this bad boy is insane....so savoury and delicious. The sauce is a savoury one which I didn't like as much as some other places that do a sweet and sour one but nonetheless, I think this is one of the best seafood pancakes I've had. Lastly....drum roll the banchan - the kimchi bokkeum (stir fried kimchi) SO GOOD and probably my favourite of everything I had. It went so good with every dish - sweet, sour, and savoury all at the same time. Overall, great vibes and service but I did find the flavour profile of everything a bit on the saltier side...However, I also blame myself because I didn't order any noodles or rice to balance it out... I've been hoping to try this restaurant for a while and I'm glad we finally did. Located in not the best area in town, this restaurant is just at the edge of Gastown. We came here for lunch and when we first entered, we were greeted friendly staff who took use upstairs to a well lit seating area. After reading other reviews, I knew we had to order the Hang Sang and for some variety... we also ordered a Pocha Udon. Glad we did.... Those were wonderful choices. The pork cheeks were tender paired with a wonderful sampling of seaweed soup, fried chicken, pancake, eggplant, and many more. As for the Pocha Udon, the noodles were chewy and the broth was delicious. I'm often wary of Asian soup since many seem to be made with MSG resulting a dry mouth hours later. I'm pleased to say, I didn't experience that with the soup here. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a unique Korean food experience. My favourite was the Korean Pancake which was loaded with seafood and the crusted cooked perfectly crispy and Korean Fried Chicken. The noodles were over cooked for me but it had tons of flavours. Modern twist to Korean food. I really liked their beef tartare and yuzu Shochu. Everything else I ordered was okay, but nothing spectacular. But I don't like how everything was not only overpriced, but there weren't enough crostini's for the tartare and not enough greens/ sauce for the Bossam. An extra serving of greens was $4. I ordered it... but definitely not worth $4 in my opinion. And finally, it's super loud inside the restaurant premise with such low ceilings and loud music. All it took was 1 super loud customer to make the entire experience incredibly unbearable. For over an hour we felt like our ears were going to pop due to a super drunk (happy, but high pitched) customer that was sitting across the floor from us. And nothing was done to try and lower the volume. Food's not bad, but also not amazing (I do like their tartare though). I'm unlikely to come back, but if I do, might try their KFC or seafood stew. Great cocktails, solid Korean food. We had the pork belly lettuce wraps, fried chicken (1/2 spicy and 1/2 soy), seafood pancake, and of course some kimchi and rice. Food was overall pretty good although more expensive than most Korean places and it also seemed unusual that they would charge for the side dishes that are usually free in Korean restaurants. The portion sizes were pretty good, but if you were to go over to the west end you would be able to get better value for quality/quantity versus price. Cocktails however were really excellent. For cocktails I would give this place more like a 4 or even 4.5, so overall I'd give 3.5 stars. Service was fairly attentive, ambiance is cool and slightly nicer casual. Not sure if I'd be hurrying back for dinner but I would definitely stop by for a cocktail again, and perhaps check out their late night menu. read more

We have been here a few times now and my ultimate conclusion is that, while the food is usually quite good, what really frustrates me is each time we are here they have new, seemingly arbitrary processes in place. For instance, at our most recent visit we arrived shortly after opening. We were seated promptly as the restaurant was not full (only 3 other tables seated at the time). Having been here before, we knew what we wanted to order and asked our server if we could place our order. She told us no, she had to wait for all other tables seated before us to place their orders first before she could serve us. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me but fine, that's their policy. But then, confusingly, another server came to our table and asked if we were ready to order. We said yes, and then she said she had to go but would come back to us. Just strange. We came hoping to finally try the bento box. Another annoyance: we asked the server if they had any and were told "maybe". It feels like they are sizing you up to decide whether you are "worthy" to try this dish. Really left a bad taste in my mouth. They are lucky that the food is actually very good and the prices are reasonable, as the service leaves a lot to be desired. read more

We went here to try their special lunch set but unfortunately they were already out of it by the time we arrived (after ~12:30pm). We didn't have a reservation but we didn't wait too long to get a table. Our server recommended the Soobap which came with doenjang jiggae and bulgogi. We were actually surprised by the large portion size. We also ordered their KFC (half & half) and Korean pancake/jeon. Overall, we enjoyed our food and service was great too. Will try and come back next time for their special lunch set. read more

It was an average place. I liked their drinks. But the food was average. They have good seating but the service was slow. Food was ok. Also it was hard to find this restaurant because somehow google map shows you a different street. And last, music played at any restaurant matters to me and this one had tiktok songs which I did not enjoy. read more
