I'm a big fan of the sushi burrito concept. It's very prevalent in Northern California, so I was excited to see a food truck in Coronado that served them. First off, the customer service was indifferent. I asked about the ingredients in a dish and was told to look at the menu. Yes, I understand how menus work and I can read, but since I was a first time customer, I wanted to interact with the staff a bit to get a feel for the overall vibe. There was nobody else in line, so I certainly wasn't inconveniencing anybody with my question. Salesmanship is important if you want my hard-earned money. I went with the standard California Sushi Burrito. I figure if they can get the basics right, then I'll be back for some of the more adventurous combos. When I got the food, it certainly looked good, but it lacked flavor and there was a ton of very bitter-tasting lettuce on it. Most of my bites of the burrito were just bitter lettuce with very little krab mix. The menu said spicy house mayo, but I couldn't taste any at all. I tried adding a little soy sauce, but even that couldn't resuscitate the patient. read more

First of all, the burritos were a lot bigger than I thought and were fairly quick. Spring rolls were great. Well Feeling a bit hungry and I was in Pacific Beach San Diego and came up to this Food Truck . Well looking over there menu we got the Crunchy Roll and here is what we thought . First it took about 10 Minutes before our rolls came out , But we had to ask to see if our rolls were ready but I felt it was pretty darn good !! For a food Truck it has to be better than most sushi places !! The Rolls came in 8 pieces and as we were enjoying each piece it was nice Krispy and the rice they use is dam good !! The fish is so fresh, it just melts in your mouth. Ken let us know he picks up his fish DAILY!! You get what you pay for at Zs Buddies. Fresh fish & good portion size thats packed with flavor. However, after hearing such positive comments about Zs Buddies, I had to see if they could change my mind on the retired trend. Unfortunately their ramen and bento boxes were sold out. We placed our order up front and noticed an unmentioned card fee. Our food was finished after 15 minutes. =ORDERED= *Fried Oysters: could have used another minute. The panko exterior was mostly crispy with a third of the oysters being a bit soggy. Oysters were rather small but they were soft and hot. Came with a lemon slice and spicy mayo. *Mt. Fuji Burrito: had an impressive cross section. Stuffed with krab, avocado, tuna and salmon. Loved how most of the burrito consisted of fillings with a thin layer of sushi rice and mixed greens. The tuna and salmon weren't fishy at all, the included slices were thick. I didn't like the smell of the paper wrapping so I removed it. The Mt. Fuji burrito was already massive so I can't imagine how big their oversized version would be. Food: After coming here for a Yelp Elite Event, we would say that this food truck is a decent option for a sushi crave fix. The event allowed us to try the Poke Salad Bowl - it came with a good-sized portion of fresh tuna and salmon on top of spring mix, and complemented with seaweed salad, imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber. The ingredients were fresh, and all worked together. However, we thought the sauce was too sweet and swayed from traditional Hawaiian poke recipes; it felt like an Americanized version of poke. The event also allowed us to try the fried oysters - these were also pretty tasty. We bought the Mt. Fuji Burrito and found it better than the bowl. It also came with tuna and salmon, this time tossed in spicy Mayo and rolled in a seaweed/rice burrito. Again, portions were decent for the price/food truck food. AMAZING, run don't walk to this snazzy red truck in North Park!!!!! We arrived before the lunch crowd and I'm so happy we did! This is a "Hot Spot" people! Our sushi lunch was the Best we have had in San Diego! Ken, the gracious Owner and his team took our order: Double Dragon Sushi Burrito. Fresh fresh ingredients, rice, shrimp tempura, avocado, lettuce, crab wrapped in seaweed was Excellent! So glad my husband was with me so I could share this large burrito. I was pumped to try this Japanese fusion food truck, courtesy of the taste makers of Yelp, and it met my every expectation! The Mt. Fuji burrito was everything I thought it would be. With the seaweed wrap, and tuna and salmon pieces, and, importantly, not too much rice, it was the perfect bite every time! It had that satisfying sushi taste with that filling, ample portion of a burrito! The Takoyaki octopus balls, with a creamy filling were so creative! A mite saltier I usually go for, but I loved the creativity, and cured salmon shavings on top, giving it a smoky rich taste. I was pleasantly surprised with Z's Buddies. Their truck is conveniently located in the parking lot of Target South Park. From the menu, I actually really enjoyed the hot items, gyoza and takoyaki. Both steaming hot with great texture and lots of bits of octopus in the takoyaki. Bonita flakes going nuts in the wind! The sushi burritos were gigantic! And the protein were pretty fresh. Sushi burritos the size of my head! I came to Z buddies after seeing it on social media. It is located at the South Park Target parking lot. They are usually at this spot, but they do have a calendar on their website to let you know where they will be parked for the day. My husband and I got a couple items on the menu including the shrimp tempura, fried oysters, and 3 different sushi burritos. Everything was great! Usually when we get fried things to go they get soggy when we reach home, but the tempura and fried oysters stayed nice and crispy. The sushi burritos were gigantic and one was enough for two servings! Everything we tried tasted great an the quality of the fish was really good and fresh! I heard Zs Buddies was having fried oysters on the menu as a special over the weekend, so I headed down to the San Diego Food Markets to give them a go. I was certainly glad I did because they were fantastic. The panko breading was perfect. It was light and crispy but with enough to encompass the whole oyster. The oysters inside were juicy for sure and flavorful. They offered that subtle flavor of the sea and a touch of brine. They were just right. The sauce that came on the side was great. It was creamy and had a touch of spice, bit not much. Zs Buddies also makes poke bowls, sushi burritos, sushi rolls, tempura, and bento boxes. The staff members were all very nice. My job has been getting food trucks every week at work and I have to say that this is by far the best one they've gotten yet! The food here tastes super fresh and even without sauce it's good?? Like I was SHOOK LOL. I ended up getting a double dragon sushi burrito and seaweed salad. Tbh I swore off sushi burritos after trying one for the first time on Convoy (I think the place was called pokeritto but I believe it's long gone now). Bcuz that sushi burrito was so gross. But omg the sushi burrito here is so fresh and you can actually taste each ingredient when taking a bite!! I actually even enjoyed my sushi burrito without any sauce for the first few bites bcuz of how delicious it was. But I couldn't resist adding ponzu and spicy Mayo which gave the burrito even more flavor than it already had. The seaweed salad was also nice and crunchy and it's atop of a bed of some spring mix which is nice. Would prefer if it was 100% seaweed salad without spring mix but I can't complain bcuz it was still super delicious. I love stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. Raw fish isn't something that I usually go for but I had to come check this place out. Luckily Z's has tempura battered goodies as an option too incase raw meat isn't your jam :) I got to chat with the owner, and such a nice guy, passionate about the food he's serving up to folks! On my second trip to this location I ordered what they were known for, what put them on the map. The Z- World Sushi Burrito, its just under 2.5lbs of share if want greatness. if they crank out a spicy version they will see me pop in every 22 days. I would not have come across this food truck had I not heard about it through yelp. The food truck is parked adjacent to the Target in South Park. Although the location is a bit inconspicuous, there is another food truck parked next to it, which makes it easier to spot. I ordered the chicken kaarage and Mt Fuji sushi burrito. The chicken kaarage had a bit too much breading, but it was still good. I'll probably opt for the oysters or takoyaki next time. The burrito was huge! They did not skimp out on the salmon and tuna. Since I don't like spicy mayo, I asked to have that replaced with the eel sauce. They did omit the spicy mayo, but I couldn't really taste the eel sauce. Following my love for poke and sushi I was excited to try Zs buddies food truck when it opened up. Located in South Park in the target parking lot so parking is not at all an issue. Upon arrival I was slightly disappointed that so soon after opening almost 50% of the menu was unavailable. However, that didn't stop my hungry hippo of a stomach. :p Unable to decide the hazards of going out in public hungry. I went with the chefs choice for the fried oysters, salmon & tuna poke bowl as well as the Mt Fuji burrito. Typically I only like raw oysters but I was pleasantly surprised on the fried oysters that undoubtedly was devine with the squeeze of lemon juice and the creamy dipping sauce. I had no issues making them all disappear. On to the poke bowl. The presentation of the bowl in a to go box was beautiful but semi basic as I was missing my typical toppings as they always make my bowl more exciting with all the bursting flavors and textures. So this was my least favorite of the three dishes however, I will say I was impressed with the amount of fresh fish that was in the bowl. They didn't skimp by any means as every bite did have a perfect ratio of fish and the rest of the bowl. Last, as tacos and burritos are so popular in Southern California it's exciting to see a poke take to a burrito. Although the owners stated the z world burrito was the most popular this island girl will always choose fresh fish. Looking back as similar as the burrito and poke bowl were maybe the tempura shrimp and soft shell crab would have been a change in pace. Until next time which will be sooner than later as I am often hungry and craving fresh seafood. The sushi burrito did come with a spicy Mayo which was a great binder but loving the sauce for the fried oysters I used the rest of the sauce to finish a Devine meal. Dare I deem them as the Sushi Ota on wheels? Ok, maybe a bit of a stretch, but their food is incredibly fresh. Every time I've eaten here it's been an absolute bright spot in my day and it's quite affordable to boot. This is literally the best sushi that I have had since coming to San Diego in 2019. Like they're so nice and they are so willing to talk to you. I'm so happy that they decided to come down here from Portland and open up this food truck. We're going back next week. The prices are amazing and so worth it. So to the food. I got the double dragon sushi burrito. It's got shrimp tempura, fresh veggies, and crab salad. And I got mine with spicy mayo just because I don't like eel sauce. Which is what it comes with. I loved it and I usually don't like seaweed with my sushi. I usually get it with soy paper but I don't even care this time because it's just so good. I also got shrimp tempura which was so crunchy and crispy and delicious. It comes with a spicy mayo dipping sauce and oh goodness gracious. The two items go perfectly together. My husband got the black widow sushi burrito and that comes with the shrimp tempura and fried crab and everything that my burrito came with. My daughter got the chicken katsu bento box. I may or may not have had a piece of hers on the way home. I cannot confirm or deny. But if I did have a piece of hers, I would have to say that it was so crunchy and crispy and the chicken was juicy. Seriously just good food all around. I got the nigiri combo and the california roll, deep fried. Total price was $21 cash and I tipped for a total of $25. Worth every penny!!! Rice was nice and sticky and did not crumble when dipped in soy sauce, which is a personal pet peeve of mine so I was VERY PLEASED!! This gem is very easy to miss if you're not familiar with what's in the area. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the Target and Native Poppy and didn't see that there was Z'S BUDDIES LOCATED RIGHT THERE IN THE PARKING LOT!! It was a warm Friday and I thought it was about time I try this place out. I was absolutely not disappointed and my expectations were exceeded. I ordered the salmon and tuna poke rice bowl and shrimp tempura and both were absolutely amazing. The salmon and tuna were both so fresh and the sauce they use to marinade is absolutely refreshing and savory. The amount of greens, avocado, cucumber, and seaweed salad are perfect. For the amount of food that you get, it is obvious that it can be shared between two people. The shrimp tempura was amazing. Very light batter, fresh shrimp, and the perfect crunch and crisp with each bite. I highly recommend getting those two items if you stop by after your crazy target run in South Park. Oh man, the sushi truck of my dreams right here. They come to my office every once in awhile (usually once a month) and I mark my calendar for it. Sadly, they usually come on Friday which is the day my team goes out to lunch together. So, I only get to have it when lunch plans fall through. They serve delicious sushirritos and that's all I need to have. I always get the volcano sushirrito with no salmon and they are happy to customize it slightly for me. It's fresh and spicy, just the way I like it. They had a sign up the first time I came out to make it "mega" and it did not disappoint. I think the burrito came out twice the size of the normal one. It was epic. The last time I had it I had to ask for mega, it is a couple of dollars more but well worth it. The guys working are attentive and friendly and are willing to customize as needed.
