Just like a few of the reviewers with femme-sounding names and profile pictures, I've had…read moreconsistently unpleasant, downright haughty and passive aggressive "customer service" experiences here by a white male employee named Max, who I'm guessing is a lead and the same man as a few others reviewed. Max has also mansplained and acted condescending to me, actually attempting to correct me when I was more knowledgeable about one pair of sneakers there than he was that I had just read a lot of information about. Max repeatedly denied the information in an arrogant way, and when I tried to politely mention it was factual, he did not like that at all. Max will likely complain about any customer that he thinks is "high maintenance" or has special needs, just as he did with me, which I can only interpret as him being ableist. The one time I suffered through a return with him eligible under the company's policy, he acted like he was inconvenienced by doing so the entire time, and he told me in a very judgmental, passive aggressive way, quote, "If you keep them for a while, we assume you like them." He then acted surly and complained while he was doing the return, exaggerating what he saw on the screen (quote, "it's hard to even see what to do with all of these returns," when I had a grand total of one exchange and one refund posted on my account over the year and a half.) One of the actual managers of Footwise, when I shared this feedback with them, said that Max needed to be re-trained. I guess either that didn't work out for him or he avoids doing them now at all costs, because when I came in to do a different exchange, he handed me off to another employee there without explanation. He even had the audacity to say, when I told the other employee the first shoes I tried on were too narrow, "They say they're too narrow... I guess," as if he was questioning or judging the customer's own ability to know how their feet feel in a shoe. He had such an attitude saying that to me, and then he avoided me around the store and made me feel very uncomfortable and annoyed while he made sure to smooth talk two other older clients trying on shoes. Max was very personable and chipper to them just as he treated me the very first time I was in there, laughing and affectionately speaking with them, but he entirely avoided eye contact with me. Max didn't even bother to ask if I needed anything or how I was doing when he was just standing around or when he was not with other customers when the other employee disappeared into the back (who I overheard telling Max they wanted to take their lunch break soon). After waiting several minutes while Max was standing around literally doing nothing and avoiding me, I got my things and waited at the register. Instead of helping me check out, he went and got the other employee in the back to come out, who was quite sweet and kind during the exchange and checkout process. I could feel Max's gaze on me as I wished the other employee goodbye and left. Do yourself a favor, femmes, women, and disabled folk and avoid this store, because unless one of the managers gives this man a serious reality and ego check, I doubt his arrogant and passive aggressive behavior will ever change. I'd recommend going to literally any other store to avoid him. It's a shame, though, as the other employees at this location are actually quite nice.

When I need to get duded up I am off to the center for retail epic fail, Jantzen Beach Mall. A few places help keep this monument to a bad economy afloat and one of those beacons in the gloom of this Mall is Casual Male. It is a clothing shop for the rest of us, the ones who need their own zip code, the ones who turn sideways to get through turnstiles but it doesn't help, the ones who can't fit in coach seats but pretend we do. In my case I was facing the fat guys worst nightmare, being on television. Thankfully it is local cable access so hardly anyone will be watching but still, as a candidate for public office you have to look your best. They say television adds ten pounds but luckily for us fat guys what's another ten pounds, honestly. In we walked, the Wife and I, and we met Dawn, a fat guys best friend. Dawn is the single most knowledgeable person I have ever met about dressing the pear shaped. She was amazing and worked so hard to do the near impossible. Make me look mature and respectable. It took a while to nail down the outfit and we felt bad about taking up so much for her time but she kept telling us we didn't need to apologize and that she was enjoying doing her job. I want Dawn cloned and installed in every retail outlet in America. Casual Male isn't just all about service, they really do have wonderful clothes. Hip & cool stuff, athletic stuff, from dressy to, well, casual, as the name says. They even have Beatles shirts in my size! I thought for years that Paul and Ringo just didn't like big men, now I know it's just American retailers. Cologne? They have it. Watches? They have some nice ones of those too. Belts, shoes, socks, suspenders and swim wear too. Heaven. Morbidly obese heaven.

Mad an appt to get fitted for and order a tux rental for a wedding in Chicago. Appt was 12:40. My…read morenoon appt ended early so I got to the store at 12:15. I waited behind a single person getting checked out who was chatting with the cashier for 10 minutes about politics, life, sports, etc, after which they said "nice to meet you", (I thought they had been long time friends). The cashier finally got to me and I said I had an appt and he said oh then I'll take you to the other worker because I have to help these other people. The other worker said "what time is your appt" and I said 12:40. He said, with a brash tone, "well it's 12:25 so you can wait 15 minutes while I help this other guy". This other guy - who CAME IN AFTER ME AND DIDN'T HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. I was obviously like no, that's not how this works. I not only showed up before the other guy, I also had the foresight to make an actual appointment, and just because I'm 15 minutes early you're going to punish me, and be a complete jerk about it? The other guy behind me said it was fine, I should go first, so I did. The guy helping me then took my measurements and filled out a slip, gave it to me, and said to take it to the store in Chicago next weekend and they'll have my order ready for me. I literally said "are you sure this is all I have to do?", because it seemed too easy. And he literally said "yes." Next weekend I call the store in Chicago and they have NO ORDER IN MY NAME WHATSOEVER. The guy never put my order in. Fortunately the lady was very helpful and she got me fitted quickly and got a tux rental ready for me on the spot and it all worked out, but my entire trip to this store in clackamas was a complete waste of time, and I'm pretty sure that this vindictive guy intended on screwing me over. I suppose the moral is to show up for your appointment exactly at the appt time, even though that would mean you then would have to wait past your appt time because they'd be currently helping other people. In other words, WHAT THE F IS THE POINT OF MAKING AN APPOINTMENT?!?!?
