Food was great. Very authentic. Even the little house was very true to German builds. Especially the bathroom! The owner was on her own when we were there. Waitress, cook and busboy! She said her 2 helpers were on vacation. Be sure to save room for dessert. It's a must to make reservations. Very small dining room, and the entire meal took probably 1.5 hours. Cute little place. Small (not a bad thing at all) but it packs a flavorful punch. It is just like going to Oma's house for supper. I had the Roulade with spaetzle and my husband had Jagersnitzel. We sampled each others' dish and wow! Both were amazing! We had a peach torte for desert that was so delicious. Honestly, that torte was the best desert I have had in a long time. The reviews misled us this time. Start out with the good. Bread was good. Salads were good. Apple strudel was good. Sadly the dinner was not good. Main issues were the food was burnt and not just a little. You can see in the pics. The vegetables and sauces had no seasoning. Very bland. The schnitzel was very tough. Such a cool restaurant! This is the type of place you dream of finding and telling your friends about! Practically in the middle of nowhere, Zur Autobahn is a unique spot and a must-visit. The interior is decorated with automotive memorabilia and car show awards (making this place extra cool for a gearhead like me) and family owned and operated. The first page of the menu tells a great story about how the owners had an automotive company in Germany but Conny always dreamed of opening a restaurant. When they moved to Texas they made the dream a reality! Great homemade German food awaits you here and it's BYOB if you'd like to bring something alcoholic. Worst restaurant experience in a very long time! We came into the small restaurant and there's no sign to say seat yourself. We were the 2nd group of people there. Conny came out from a curtain and said for us to sit down. We took our seat and sat there for about 10 min before she came to take our drink order. In the mean time she was slicing a piece of cake for the other table. While she was going to get the iced tea and a German specialty drink aka coke mixed with Fanta, 2 other couples came in. She took our order after about 15 min or so. She then also took the other tables orders at the same time. She disappears behind a curtain for another 25 min. When she comes out again she serves food to the last couple who arrived. A few more minutes pass and then she serves the other couple who came in after us their food! I finally got up to go ask about our food and she was coming out from the red curtain with it. We literally waited over 45 min for a bratwurst plate and pork schnitzel. In addition the facility itself did not appear that clean. For example the dirty bar of soap in the bathroom, crumbs on the counter. Also no one was friendly which would have made a difference read more

We own a weekend place in a neighboring town and found this restaurant thanks to Yelp. Gave it a try and it's now in our must visit list--we try to eat there at least once per visit to our property. Atmosphere is cozy and quaint, although the music at times reminds me of Astroworld's Alpine Sleigh-ride. Fond memory, but sickening sweet over an extended meal. The food is amazing. During our 15 or so visits, they've never had an "off day" in the kitchen and we've never tried anything we didn't love. That include desserts, which we never have--but always make--room for! Connie (co-owner) and her sometimes-working assistant waitress are attentive. Connie sometimes doesn't smile or engage much, but since we've become regulars she seems to be opening up. Her other waitress is always entertaining and friendly. We've never met Dieter (co-owner), but that's fine . . . as long as he keeps dishing out the incredible food from the kitchen. Meal for large family or group of friends can be pricey, but worth it. BYOB. And, always try to make a reservation, as the seating is limited and the place can fill up. Plus, failing to do so can put you on Connie's nasty list! read more

It was a dark and stormy night...no, really. It was raining buckets and we were at Meridian State Park camping. We were not skilled enough to start a campfire in a downpour so we decided to check this place out. I had the Cordon Bleu. Ham, wrapped in Swiss cheese, wrapped in a pork loin, lightly fried to a golden brown. If I am ever convicted of murder and made to choose my last meal this would be the main course. I live in Seattle, but I am considering flying back to Austin, renting a car and driving up to Meridian just to have this again. The charm of this place is great too. They have their family story printed on the front of their menus and they sell various German products like soap, beer steins and mugs with adorable pictures of kittens. The prices are a little high and their menu is very meat-centric, but you will leave satisfied...oh yeah, I almost forgot: BYOB read more

This side of the road was a complete surprise and an amazing restaurant. We were driving through that part of Texas and saw the banner, and the German flag and decided to stop. The lunch was delicious, well flavored but not overpowering - bratwurst with sauerkraut and potatoes, followed by a very light and flavorful apple strudel. We had the lunch menu but plan to return for dinner. If you are driving through the area, or plan to be there, you owe yourself the experience of stopping for a meal. read more

My grandparents were German, and I grew up in a tiny Texas town that was filled with German heritage. Needless to say, I have had good German food (even in actual Germany!) This place blows everything out of the water. It is so good, that I literally have cravings for it. Not just German food, but this place in particular. If you are even slightly in the area, you have to come here. When we have special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays, we no longer go to the fancy steakhouses in town. We go straight to Zur Autobahn. Like others have said, if you are planning on going during a peak lunch or dinner time, you need to call ahead. The restaurant is not very big, but that is part of the charm. I cannot recommend this place enough. So go and enjoy! read more

heard about this place through word of mouth and since I have been craving for German food (there isn't any great ones and ones that stay open late enough for me to try out back at home), my anniversary dinner date and first time trying German food. There wasn't any WiFi hotspots in Meridian so I couldn't check in. Anyway, it's easy to miss if you are driving at night and it's truly homemade German food. Here's what we ordered: Goulash soup, thick and creamy brown soup with beef. My partner had the Spaetzle with mushroom and white creamy soup, the noodles are made of potatoes (scrumptious). For our dinner, we had the Schnitzel Sampler for two which includes two Wiener Schnitzel, one Jäger Schnitzel and one Paprika Schnitzel, served with fried potatoes and Rotkraut (red-cabbage). The red cabbage was sweet and I ate more than half of the cup it was served in. I was also easily amused by the serving spoon it came with; looked like a seashell and reminded me of the beaches back home. To top it off, we shared a small slice of blueberry pie. It was a slow evening and other than my date and me, there was another couple in the restaurant. After dinner, I bought a few homemade soaps because I have a thing for collecting soaps and using them. Conny and Dieter are the owners, and came from Germany. They are very sweet people. Be sure to read the front page of the menu, too. Enjoy the pictures and thank you for a great experience for my first time trying German food. Note: They do not accept American Express and there isn't any WiFi hot spots in Meridian. If you get to Highway 6 then you will have WiFi again. Bring your own wine and beer! read more

A great find while exploring Meridian and Bosque Co. It's just like others have said, home-cooked German dishes served and made by Connie,the owner. We were the only ones there at 6:30pm on a Wednesday and had the schnitzel plate for two. I could've drank a cup of the onion mushroom gravy, which was served piping hot on the side for the Jager schnitzel and the paprika green pepper sauce ,also served on the side for the other schnitzels, was equally as tasty. Very sloppy operation. Service is obscenely slow because the staff is inefficient. It took them 10 minutes just to take our drink order. Got our order wrong. The food was over priced and not particularly tasty. Portions were average at best. read more

Very nice authentic German restaurant with the owners cooking and serving their home made food. The bratwurst with cooked red cabbage and German potato salad were very tasty. Conny also makes soaps, jewelry, Himalayan Salt Rock lamps and other items which are for sale here. The food was a bit pricey but the quality was great. I lived in Germany for several years and I must say.... This was like being there all over again!!!! We decided to take the back roads from Killeen to Fort Worth and started getting ready hungry so I googled restaurants. We are so pleased to have come across this place!!!!! You pull up and you're instantly in Germany about to experience THE best German food I have had since I've been back in the States! My boyfriend had the meatball with spaetzle and it was phenomenal. I had the pork roast with red cabbage and fried potatoes. It taste exactly like it did in downtown Heidelberg, Germany. The bread was fresh and homemade... Hard and chewy on the outside and super soft in the middle, omg delish!!!! We were blown away by this place. They even had genuine German coke and Apfelschorle!!!!!!! Apfelschorle is a very popular German soft drink and it was so awesome to drink it with our authentic meal! I also had a salad with the homemade house dressing and I LOVED it! The salad was so pretty and good! Everything was completely homemade and done on the spot so it takes a bit to get your food, the wait is worth it though! It's been a couple days since we went here and we are still just raving over it. We are already planning our next trip and have friends planning theirs too! I wonder if they would cater a wedding? I would love to have our wedding there. It's beautiful inside and out. Seriously, the food was so good and Connie was so super sweet! Love this place!!! read more

We drove a little over a 100 miles to eat at Zur Autobahn, there seems to be no good German restaurants in the DFW area, at least we have not found one. This is a small place about five miles west outside of Meridian, TX owned and operated by a very nice German couple; there are only 28 places to sit people, which I liked. Both of us ordered the Jager Schnitzel, center-cut, breaded and pan-fried pork-loin steak topped with smothered mushroom gravy with fried potatoes, they food was very good, but not worth a 200 miles round trip, still it was better than most in DFW. If you are in the area I would recommend that you stop. read more

We called ahead for reservations one weekend last year. We were camping nearby at the state park. We can't confirm the foods authenticity, as we rarely eat German cuisine, but it sure tasted great! We drove past this restaurant a few weeks ago on our way to Fort Worth and decided to try it on our next drive by. We did make reservations but when we arrived we were the only ones in the restaurant. We went early around 5:30. The owner said it was good we came early because they get packed later in the evening. I sure hope so--cause NO one was there while we had dinner. The food is truly German, delicious but I must admit, I thought it was a little overpriced. With that being said, I would definitely go back. Truly some of the best German food I've had. We lived in Germany for 3 years and this is the real deal. Service was acceptable but the owner did not engage us. She seemed tired . We tried to strike up a conversation several times but she was not interested. We have been coming here since 2013 and we found this place as a total fluke...now we plan our trip to Dallas to stop and eat here 4 or 5 times a year. It is by far the best German food we have ever had in Texas! Conny and Dieter have created a culinary oasis while overlooking a Texas sunset. We highly recommend anything on the menu and the Streusel is a must for dessert! read more
