We booked a six night stay in an Alcoba Ocean View room with 1 King Bed. Based on others' recommendations, we requested a room on an upper floor. We were assigned a room in Building 6 3rd floor. I am not at all positive if this was actually an "unobstructed ocean view" room. Other guests I spoke to in the same room category said they could see the ocean from their bed. We had to walk out to the balcony in order to see the ocean.
Regarding the host - this was a disappointment to us. After hearing other reviews on this subject, we had high expectations. We arrived on a Sunday evening. By late Monday, we hadn't been contacted by our "host". I called the number on the phone labeled "host" - and was informed that Monday was our host's day off. I was informed that they would have him call me on Tuesday (day 3 of our vacation). I told the person I spoke with that we wanted to make reservations for the Sushi Cooking and Mexican Cooking classes - but, was informed that they were filled up and we would be put on a "waitlist". We were also told that all of these cooking classes were already filled up by Saturday (the day before we arrived) - so, we didn't bother trying for other cooking classes during the week. By Tuesday, we had already booked an excursion, salon appointments and a spa treatment ourselves. When our host finally contacted us on Tuesday, the only thing we needed at this point were dinner reservations. One was made correctly - but, the other was made at the wrong restaurant (we didn't notice this until the day of the reservation). I also asked him if breakfast was served at Mi Carisa. He told me "no" - which we found out later was incorrect. That was pretty much the extent of the contact with our "host" - as we ran across him one of the last times as we were dining poolside later in the week. We also saw him in the lobby the day of our departure - and he appeared to avoid us.
Regarding the room itself - it was beautifully appointed. Very comfortable. I have to highly commend our housekeeper, Diana. She took good care of our room each day, and did a wonderful job with the turn down each night. We enjoyed coming back to our room at the end of each evening, with a wonderful scent and Ferrero Rocher chocolates that awaited us.
We tried all the food venues - the food at 20.87 being our favorite (by the way - I highly recommend the lamb skewers). I especially enjoyed going to Inez each day for a Mocha Frapp and pastry (pastries were awesome). The in room dining is great! On our last evening, we decided to return to 20.87 one last time. I had attempted to make a reservation by phone just after 4pm and was told reservations were closed at 4pm and that we could try walking in. We arrived at 7pm to an almost empty restaurant. The hosts were quite rude to us telling us they had 40 reservations for 7pm and 30 for 7:30pm. By 7:20pm, we observed that only four people had been seated since we arrived and they had turned away 6. At that point, we were seated.
Regarding the activities - we went to the Astronomy and Wine on our first night at the hotel. Ana was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about astronomy (thank you, Ana!) - however, there was no "wine". I went to the La Unica Pool on a couple of days where "Floating Poker" was scheduled.......and there was nothing. I asked a staff member walking by the pool why the activity wasn't happening. She called someone on a radio who indicated that they had walked around the pool, and that no one was interested in the activity - so, they didn't do it. I was by the pool, and did not see anyone from the activities staff by the pool. I also went to play Loteria on the last night at Palmera Lounge. I was one of the first to arrive - and was asked by Sergio from the activities staff why I was there. I told him I was there for Loteria. He said there was only one other person there for the activity, and that there would be no prizes. It was obvious that he didn't want to do the activity and was trying to discourage me from staying. I stuck around, and many people eventually showed up. They ended up doing the activity.
Regarding the bar service - this was very good. We had the opportunity to visit most of the bar venues. During the day, we opted to spend most of our time on the beach. Galvez was our server on the beach - and he was amazing. He even made a recommendation for a drink, the Riviera Maya - which was great.
Spa - we enjoyed a couples massage - which was part of the inclusions. Celia and Sara did a great job - thank you!
Salon - we both had pedicures on our first full day there - which we feel were adequate. When we booked it, they tried to upsell to the more expensive pedicures. We stuck with one that was part of the inclusions.
Excursions - I booked "Swim with the Dolphins". It met and exceeded my expectations. I absolutely recommend it.
This is a resort that we would love to come back to - it was a big plus that it was adults only. read more
