An immersive experience for your matcha! I love the experience that they give you since they hand-whisk the matcha right in front of your face. You can even see the 6.1 grams of matcha being measured right in front of you too! If you're the type of person that likes their matcha on the sweeter side, this place might not be for you. I also appreciate the girl that made my matcha, she gave me recommendations on where to go shopping since I was visiting New York! There's seating on the first and bottom floor and it can be very limited. I know that there's usually a line out the door to get inside the store but I came in at 2pm and there was no line at all and was a walk-in. Drink: Iced Matcha Latte (8/10): This was such a creamy matcha latte! I asked for sweetener and I think they added very minimal amounts of sweetener but that's okay cause I was actually able to taste the matcha even after it was combined with the milk. Iced Honey Matcha Latte (7.7/10): This was basically the same as the iced matcha latte but they use honey as the sweetener inside. Although, I wasn't able to taste the honey at all. This was my boyfriend's drink but he didn't really enjoy it because it wasn't sweet enough. I thought it tasted pretty decent!
12 Matcha was a special request from my matcha-loving teen, and it definitely lived up to the experience she was hoping for. Located at 54 Bond St, between Lafayette St & Bowery, this buzzy NYC matcha spot is known for premium Japanese matcha which is carefully whisked to order. Be prepared to WAIT! You'll ll likely make new matcha-lovin' friends with waits up to 30 minutes (or longer). My teen made friends in line and ultimately felt the wait was worth it. One thoughtful touch: they provide umbrellas for customers waiting outside, which is especially nice in the humid NYC August weather. In the end, she left with her matcha cravings satisfied and, of course, a can of matcha powder to take home for later. TIPS * Closest trains: 6 to Bleecker St; R/W to Prince St; B/D/F/M to Broadway-Lafayette. * Not a fan of waiting in a crazy-long matcha line? Same!! Luckily, there are plenty of shops nearby to browse while your resident matcha aficionado waits it out. Umbrella and all.
7.5/10 I finally had a chance to stop by this place, and I was prepared for the long line. I went on a Thursday at 2 p.m. and waited around 20 minutes. I ordered the Matcha Americano and tea ice cream. The ice cream was impressive, with a concentrated and deep tea flavor, while the Americano was refreshing. I deducted points because of the service. The staff member who helped me seemed distant and didn't smile while taking my order or preparing the matcha. However, this may have been limited to the particular staff member who served me.

Ordering is easy, and the service is fast and efficient. They take both credit cards and cash. Perfect for grabbing a drink on the go or enjoying it in the café. Small space + limited seating, so don't expect much room to sit, and there can sometimes be a wait when it's busy. Overall, definitely recommend 12 Matcha! A great little spot for a delicious matcha fix in NYC. Go Violets!
Hands down might be the best matcha I've had in the city, as someone who actively hunts down good matcha places. There was a bit of a line when we arrived, but don't let it deceive you as it does move fairly quickly and efficiently. I love how there is an upstairs and downstairs, with more seating downstairs for those who want to study here. My friend and I got the classic Matcha latte, while I had gotten the honey added to mine. The way they make their matcha is amazing, they call your name and make the drink in front of you. The baristas were so friendly and really fit the vibe of the overall cafe. The matcha was so smooth and did not taste grainy or bittery at all.
They make a show of making the matcha lattes in front of you using their charcoal-filtered water. The charcoal water tanks suspended from the ceiling look very pretty! But this causes a line build-up, which they might want to get people to think they're crowded all the time. I think they're overly conservative with letting people wait in line inside, there's plenty of room but they forced people to stand outside in the 90 degree sun which honestly felt a little inconsiderate, that's not putting the customer's well-being first in my opinion. Matcha was good, very grass very deep. Nothing to write home about, I would not wait longer than 15-20 minutes for this matcha.
They limit people inside, which is nice for crowd control. If there's a line beneath the stairs, that's why. There's a downstairs but overall the space is small with minimal seating and one washroom. Once in, ordering is simple and they make drinks right in front, a perfect little show where they're also available to answer questions though most people just record the experience. Matcha Latte - silky smooth, umami, and grassy. Honestly everything I would have imagined for a high quality matcha. Without added sugar, the latte simply tastes natural, perfectly connected to the grassy harvest. I'd say it's strong for those that typically drink sweetened or syrupy matcha but amazing for purists. Matcha Ice Cream - a bit sweet which undermines the matcha quality. There is a clear note of grassiness but deeply contrasted by a sweetness. Compared to the latte, it's sharp imbalance and almost similar to some of those grocery store bought pints. Not too impressive, would stick to a drink and maybe the hojicha.
12 Matcha is a whole experience, and a well-designed one at that. Even the line is thoughtfully curated: multiple signs informing you of the estimated wait time (we joined right at the 45-minute line - yikes - but it ended up being about 35 minutes), and big, sturdy umbrellas to keep away the sun. Once we got inside, we were able to order right away. Then we were called over to a little station where a friendly barista whipped up our lattes. I got an iced matcha latte with regular milk, made lightly sweet; matcha basque cheesecake; and a scoop of hochija ice cream. The latte was very good; the sweets were even better. Visually, the latte as served is nothing short of stunning: hyper-green matcha floating on top of the milky bottom half. Mixed together, my drink was just barely sweetened, which is a tad less sweet than I prefer. I think I would do medium-sweet next time because I like to balance out the earthy bitterness that even premium-grade matcha like this has. Also, I read that they use more matcha powder here than is often considered standard, which makes the drink taste more intense. Still, this was a very good matcha latte, strongly flavored but delicate. The matcha basque cheesecake was awesome. Rich and creamy but not too dense, ample matcha flavor, slightly caramelized on the top and side, a little bitter and medium sweet. The ice cream was perfect. Earthy, nutty, sweet, creamy, almost a little smoky. Searing was a little chaotic but we were able to find something downstairs right away. The bathroom is down there, too, FYI.
I feel mixed about this place! It's very popular so expect a very very very long line! We stood for a while and the sun was beating down on us but I thought it was so nice they provided everyone with umbrellas to shield us from the suns rays, that we would return once we went inside. The reason why the line is long is that they literally make your matcha in front of you and explain the process. This is also not a cheap experience. For something so "high end" I would expect for everything to be on point. After the long wait and being called to the front for our matcha to be made the guy who is going to make our matcha was literally all up in his nose. I had to ask him to please wash his hands before making our drink. He then told me he already did and then I said yes but you have just been touching your nose so please wash them again. Now to be fair he was very kind and did go wash his hands. However the fun process of watching them make your matcha and talking with them about it was just beet awkward. Also the seating situation inside isn't great. However the matcha was a deep green which is a plus and it was delicious! The concept was cool and I could see us coming back but hopefully we would have a better cleaner experience.
Matcha Latte: 10/10 Hojicha brownie: 6.5/10 - SO sweet, would definitely be good for two or more people. Ambiance was gorgeous and minimalistic inside. This place was reminds how part of enjoying food is enjoying the experience and presentation. There was a line the entire time I was here. Seating can be hard to get. I like that this is a laptop-free zone & also that their menu is pretty small and specific!
Every time I am in New York, I must get my dose of 12 Matcha. My daughter discovered the place on social media, and she recommended us to go. Ever since then, I've been addicted. The wait can be long, but we usually made our way to 12 Matcha right when they open. They serve other goodies as well, such as ice cream, flavored la madeleines, brownies, croissants and cheesecake. They make your drinks in front of you and are open to any questions you may have. The iced matcha have a perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness. On my last trip to New York, I took my dearest friend, and she expressed that it was the best matcha she ever had. We cannot wait to come back.
I really wanted to like 12 Matcha, but I honestly don't think it's worth the wait. There's always a line, and while the cafe itself has a nice ambiance and the service was great, the matcha was a letdown. It was very chalky and didn't have the smooth, refined taste I'd expect from quality matcha. I've had some incredible matcha in Japan, so I know what good matcha tastes like. I really don't understand the hype and unfortunately wouldn't recommend it.
Big fan of this spot - one of the best matchas I've had in this city. Stopped by on a weekday at 4pm - there was a short line outside, but it moved quickly and I only had to wait 10-15 minutes. They offered umbrellas to help with the hot summer sun which was very considerate. The menu is small, only a few drink options and foods. I got an iced matcha latte with oat milk and sweetener. They didn't charge extra for alternative milk which was a bonus. There are several stations at the counter where they call your name and you can watch them make the matcha, which embodied japan's matcha shops. it's a very carefully thought out production line: scales built into the countertop, ready to go warm water, and glass rinsers. the interior is always modern and minimalist with wooden furniture and plenty of seating. The drink was rich and smooth, with a very dark green matcha color. it was the perfect ratio of milk to matcha to ice. needless to say this will be a staple whenever I visit the city.
12 Matcha lived up to the hype for me, although not sure if I'd stand in that line every time I wanted a solid matcha latte. They pride themselves of their single origin sourced matcha and handmade each time. I do love how much matcha powder they utilize and how we can observe the staff whisking our drink vigorously. The matcha flavor definitely very prominent in my regular milk matcha latte, with an earthy profile. Tea and milk were mixed very nicely. More importantly loved how it was cold enough without too much ice that would have diluted it. My friend's matcha latte with oat milk and sweetner was very well balanced with the creaminess from the oat milk and tad sweetner that balanced out the bitterness. We found the matcha and hojicha flavors delicious. However the hojicha one was more "powdery" and not as smooth as we had hoped. The matcha first feels really sweet but then it dissipates and the matcha hits you afterwards. The space is very cute and relaxing. Some tables/counters upstairs with a downstairs area, featuring a tasting room section. Love the plants and wood based furniture. Wifi available and people were using laptops on the weekends. Staff were really friendly - small talk at the cashier and while making our matcha drinks. Lines are long but they let people inside in batches. I think this system works so it allows people inside to enjoy their matcha drinks in peace. Definitely one of the top matcha places in the city, but not sure if superior to other places for me to stand in line every time I crave it. I am not exaggerating when I say everything here is UTTER. PERFECTION !!! Their matcha is hands down the best quality matcha I have ever had--it is so creamy and the perfect balance between bitter and sweet. I ordered the matcha latte, hojicha and yuzu ice cream, and their matcha basque cheesecake... and I still find myself dreaming about every single thing. The matcha latte is sooo creamy-- you can tell because the layers of the matcha stay intact as you are drink, meaning it is not watered down and has good density to it. Each bite of the matcha basque cheesecake was the perfect texture and blends sooo well with the hojicha ice cream. And the yuzu ice cream is the perfect sorbet-like palate cleanser in between bites! I couldn't resist and ordered the hojicha basque cheesecake to-go - and you could not force me to decide which was better between the matcha or hojicha basque cheesecake because both are so so yummy. And don't get me started on the experience of dining here! Sure, you might have to wait a while to get in (we waited around 25 mins... which I found out is not so long) but the moment you step through the door, you are treated with such respect and attention. I never felt rushed by any of the staff and it was so obvious that their top priority is ensuring an amazing experience for each customer. My favorite part is that you get to see how your matcha is made from start to finish right in front of you. Our barista was so gracious to answer our questions as we asked about the proper techniques to making a good cup of matcha and we learned so much. Their matcha is sourced for Uji, Japan (the matcha capital!!) and they even flew in a master of matcha from Japan to teach the staff how to make matcha--so you know this place is legit! The two-floor space is also so aesthetic and cozy, and I love how they don't rush people to get out of the door. I guess that is why the wait can be long, but it is just a testament to how this place cares about QUALITY over anything else. 12 matcha, it was love at first bite and I cannot wait to be BACK!! read more

I got here 5 minutes before they opened on a Saturday during their soft opening and waited 40 minutes to get my drink. The line has been consistently around the block during their soft opening. They limit the number of people that can go inside at a time, which keeps the inside peaceful, despite the line outside. They use 6g of matcha! This is the most I've seen in a cafe in New York. They use alkalized charcoal water. Personally I think this is a bit much, as usual matcha lattes are probably closer to 3-4g and I think there was a bit too much caffeine for me. But the matcha flavor is great (smooth and creamy, no astringency) and the price can't be beat ($7 for a latte with oat milk). I'd come back if the wait was max 15 minutes, but I don't think I'd wait close to an hour again. There's ample space (two floors), wifi, and a bathroom downstairs, so I'll definitely be back when the lines are shorter :) read more

I'm visiting NY and I am a matcha enthusiast. 12 Matcha is the best one I've tried out of all the places I've been to. Service/Ambiance: The service is friendly and relatively quick. The only thing is that it's blown up on social media so the wait time is insane. I would recommend coming on a weekday to beat the crowds. The interior of the shop is simple and minimalistic. The decor is tasteful with pops of green, I love it. There are 2 floors and if you're ordering more than a drink, someone will help you bring it to your seat. I'd snag a table by the windows. Drink Consensus: This is a solid matcha latte. I love the intensity of the matcha and the level of sweetness it has. The sugar is not overbearing and compliments the matcha well. I finished my drink in 2 seconds because it was that good. My foodie friend that I made in line also agreed that it was now in her top 2 of matchas in the city. Ice cream was a bit sweet for my taste but the intensity of the matcha was perfect. I didn't get the chance to try the cheesecake because it was sold out but I will be back for that. The queue to enter moves slowly as drinks are individually made to order. There are 3 employees working the counter preparing drinks. Staff will call out your name and invite you to the counter to observe your drink being made. Best way to avoid the long wait time is to arrive around opening. The matcha latte was fantastic, I would definitely come back for it. The hojicha ice cream had a gritty mouth feel at the end and I wasn't a fan. First of all the experience in the ambience of this place was amazing. I did have to wait roughly 20- 30 minutes to get inside. It was really hot outside, but the staff was so nice to give us large umbrellas as we wait. Once you get inside, the interior decoration was really beautiful. There was a lot of seating available upstairs and you were able to find more downstairs. I ordered two Matcha lattes one regular sweetness and one 1/2 sweetness. If I ever go back I will definitely do the regular sweetness. The 1/2 sweetness was good too, but it was definitely more grassy tasting. They have you wait a short while to have you paired up with one of the staff members as they make the drink in front of you. They whisk everything to order. It was a really cool experience. They also let you try each of the basque cheesecake flavors which were also really good! Overall, I would definitely come back. read more
I'm lucky to work nearby because I get to snag the matcha whenever there isn't a huge line. Even before open, there is a line to get in. Because of the high demand, they have someone outside to monitor the line and make sure the queueing process is smooth and orderly. By the time you get into the shop, you are hit with the smell of, as my coworker described, the smell of Tokyo, Japan. It must mean 12 Matcha is authentic as it gets. After you order at the counter, you wait for one of the baristas to call your name and you can watch as they prepare your matcha in front of you. The experience is serene and many of the baristas are friendly and make conversation so you don't awkwardly stare at them for the whole 5-10 minute ordeal. Before writing this review, I've had multiple pastries and the matcha both sweetened and unsweetened so here are my takes. Even at 20g of sugar for the sweetened matcha, it doesn't taste that sweet and actually enhances the earthy/umami flavor of the matcha. While I love an unsweetened matcha on occasion, the sweetened matcha at 12 matcha is the move. Definitely get the basque cheesecake which is an umami bomb of a dessert. Skip the croissant because there are better ones in the area, but the financier (comes with two) is a nice treat if you're not in the mood for cheesecake. My coworker and I have already decided that our next move is to try their ice cream. And also, if you compare 12 Matcha to the other matcha options in the city, you're getting a real bang for your buck for the quality. Don't settle for matcha places that make you pay the extra dollar for oat milk, or matcha at coffee shops, wait the extra 15 minutes and try a matcha from 12 Matcha. read more

You can tell they take their time to make this experience as best as possible. The matcha is sourced from farms in Japan and they tell you how they spent a lot of time trying to perfect the matcha based off water to milk ratio. They cracked the code! Everything is super dainty and special. I just wish there was a little bit larger of a size (or a bigger glass ) I just got the iced matcha with oat milk and then the madeleine cookies which were a fancy version of regular Madeline's. beautiful interior, ambience, and you can tell that they focus on the art and process of the matcha. their matcha itself is delicious (i got an iced matcha latte with oat milk and half sweetened), and their service is great as well. please note that they don't have other flavors, such as strawberry or whatnot, it's simply a matcha latte (milk) and matcha americano (water). it takes a long time because there are only three stations that prep the matcha, and it takes a while for them to prep everything. however, this does show that they put a lot of time and energy into making the drink, and it makes the customer feel considered and special, which is nice. their bar flow is great too, they ensure that the space isn't crowded by limiting the amount of people inside. there are two floors as well, so if you are looking for a nice spot to hang out and talk to a friend while enjoying a drink and other desserts, this is a good place to go. i came at around 11:30-ish, and there was already a long line outside ! luckily, the staff provided umbrellas for those waiting in the heat, which was considerate. i'm happy with my experience and my matcha, and if you really love the taste of matcha and the whole process, this is a great place to go to, but please keep in mind that there is always going to be a wait for it. read more

to start off our morning, we went to 12 matcha! its an intimate, minimalist cafe where they take your order and then have you watch them make the matcha every step of the way. it was really cool to see it whisked in front of us and we had great conversation with the person helping us! they have great skills here and i was impressed with how foamy the usucha was. we also learned some tips and tricks for if we want to do it at home! we ordered a matcha latte (sub oat milk) and matcha americano. one has milk and one has water, for variety :) the matcha looked really intense and dark but when i drank it, it was pleasantly not too strong or bitter! even tho i requested half sugar for both, it wasnt as overpowering as i thought it would be. the flavor was there but it was lighter and brighter if that makes sense. like a delicate matcha (???) it definitely feels refined. i prefer strong bitter matchas so i feel like i prob wouldnt come back but it was a great experience and the drink was very pleasant! read more
We waited 30min on a Sat morning to get our matcha lattes and it was worth the wait. I don't wait for anything longer than half an hour so it was a buzzer beater. They do a good job of keeping folks outside to keep the ambiance calm inside. The matcha was good and the cheesecake was good, too. Not too sweet and more of a mousse. It was fun watching them do the whole process with the hot water in a kettle and whisking. Way better to have someone do it for me than to do it myself. :) Would return. read more

Came on a weekday around 2 pm and there was a short wait, maybe 20 mins? The cafe itself is very aesthetic and clean, but unfortunately there's not much space. The setup is really cool though and you can watch them make the matcha! They put a ton of matcha - 6 grams I think, which is amazing and very worth the price. However, it is definitely a LOT so make sure you eat beforehand if you're not used to so much caffeine at once. We also got the ice cream hojicha flavor and cheesecake, so lots of matcha was consumed. read more

Wow this place is busy. Long line stretching down the block. They let you in batches, so be prepared for at least a 20 min wait. But it's a cool experience- the matcha is freshly whisked in front of you, and they don't skimp on the ingredients. We had one of the cheesecakes too which was pretty good. I went on a Wednesday around 9:20 AM and got my order and sat down around 10:08 AM. I ordered the Matcha Latte (sweetened it with honey) and ordered the ice cream (2 scoops: matcha and panna). For the QUALITY of their matcha, beautiful interior, and fancy apparatus, the PRICES at this place is unmatched. $7 for a latte and $8 for 2 scoops of icecream? I consider this cheap for Manhattan. Overall, this place lives up to the hype. It deserves 5 stars. The matcha was DELICIOUS and the icecream was top notch too. The vibe of the cafe is also beautiful and service was great. I got lucky and there was no line when I arrived around 11 AM on weekday. There were a few people waiting for their drinks to be made and I waited about 10 minutes from ordering to getting my drink. The interior is clean and modern. The seats were mostly full, but I was able to get a spot. The matcha was really smooth and tasty. This place is honestly really cool. There is always a long line that I'm not sure is worth waiting in a second time, however if you've never been it's worth the wait. They do have umbrellas for the line if you walk up and ask the person at the front door for one. The wait is usually 15-20 min, maybe 30 on a weekend. Once you get in you order your matcha, I believe there are flavors in the tons to the right but I just ordered a regular. Someone will make the matcha in front of you which is the coolest part. The seating area is also very nice, they have an upstairs and a downstairs and because they are control by the flow of traffic with a line outside it's not too crowded inside. The matcha itself is very strong and not too sweet, much more of a transitional matcha so if you're looking for something sweet and milky, this likely won't be your favorite. Over all really cool place, just looking forward to the day it's a little less trendy so there won't be a line. read more

The wait here is brutal which can mostly be attributed to the fact that they have only 3 whiskers who make the matcha in front of you. I got the matcha latte sweetened and it was alright. I usually put the same amount of powder in the lattes I make at home so the flavor wasn't as intense as it was talked up to be. Flavor profile leans mellow and doesn't really assert the bitterness that I like with matcha. Probably wouldn't come back. Interior is amazing though, very tastefully decorated. read more

I saw really good reviews about this place but once I got here, there was already a line! I did appreciate that the workers were handing out umbrellas for rhe people who were waiting because I don't think I would've survived the summer heat without it. The inside of the cafe was very aesthetic to say the least, every drink is made in front of you while the barista is explaining the process. Absolutely worth the wait! The line at 12 Matcha in New York was a bit long, but once you get inside, you'll see why. The matcha-making process is a full experience. You can watch as they carefully measure out the matcha powder and add just the right amount of water with incredible precision. It's easily the best matcha I've ever had. Smooth, rich, and not overly sweet like many other places. You can really taste the quality of the matcha itself, which is clearly the focus here.
