I feel mixed about this place! It's very popular so expect a very very very long line! We stood for a while and the sun was beating down on us but I thought it was so nice they provided everyone with umbrellas to shield us from the suns rays, that we would return once we went inside. The reason why the line is long is that they literally make your matcha in front of you and explain the process. This is also not a cheap experience. For something so "high end" I would expect for everything to be on point. After the long wait and being called to the front for our matcha to be made the guy who is going to make our matcha was literally all up in his nose. I had to ask him to please wash his hands before making our drink. He then told me he already did and then I said yes but you have just been touching your nose so please wash them again. Now to be fair he was very kind and did go wash his hands. However the fun process of watching them make your matcha and talking with them about it was just beet awkward. Also the seating situation inside isn't great. However the matcha was a deep green which is a plus and it was delicious! The concept was cool and I could see us coming back but hopefully we would have a better cleaner experience.
Came here because I heard this is the best matcha place.......but I was lied to. Don't get me wrong, the inside looks really pretty and the overall vibe is aesthetic. Luckily, during the time I went, I only waited around 20 minutes BUT i know this line can get REALLY long. Once we entered, everyone was welcoming and nice. I really like how they make the matcha right infront of you. When I took a sip......it just tasted like boring matcha. I feel I have made better matcha myself. I definitely don't think the matcha here is worth it...especially for the line and the price. To me, it feels like you're paying for the aesthetic rather than actual good matcha. You're not missing out on anything if you don't come here. If you see a huge line, I say just pass along and go elsewhere.
Probably the best matcha latte I've ever had in the states, maybe some Japan ones were comparable or better. Just really tasty, I took a sip of the matcha without any milk and it was really nice and not too bitter already. Must try for matcha lovers if you're in nyc. Also hojicha brownie was yummy. Line wasn't too bad around 11:30 am on a Thursday but the line was really crazy around 2 pm Friday so only got to try this place once. It's really cool getting to see the process of them making it in front of you, great ambiance.
So many people on social media raved about this cafe, so I bookmarked it before coming to NY. We decided to stop by after doing some shopping on a Thursday afternoon and there was already a line forming outside. It was scorching hot but glad they provided umbrellas. We waited about 10 minutes before someone let us inside. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was quite the experience. After ordering the matcha latte, I went to a station where the employee made the drink. It looked like she was doing a science experiment. The matcha was high quality and not too sweet, but I did wish that it was colder, especially since it was so hot outside. The seating downstairs is very intimidate and relaxing. I took my drink downstairs and was able to cool down on the sofa. Glad that I was able to stop by and check out this cool cafe.
Visited this place when I was in NYC and it was the best matcha that I tried the whole trip. Food: Incredible. This is probably the Matcha place that I use as a base when trying other Matcha places because their matcha was just so perfect and delicious. I also got some of their pastries, but the one that stood out to me was their hojicha brownie. It was so delectable! Service: AMAZING! From the person who was bringing us inside, to the server who took our order, to the server who was making our matcha. They were also informative and they were so kind to us. It just made the experience even better. Ambience: INSANE! I love how everything looked. I love the design of everything and it was so cool that they had a downstairs section where it was also a seating area. So spacious inside as well! Overall, this is the spot that I will be thinking of every single time I try a new matcha spot!
12 Matcha was the most beautiful "almost." The ritual is immaculate. We joined the line of umbrellas outside, eventually placed our orders inside, then watched our assigned barista whisk the microfoam to perfection. MATCHA LATTE: 4/5. Earthy, and a touch too bitter in a way didn't feel balanced to me. The tea quality is high, but not as high as my go-to back home. MATCHA ICE CREAM: 3/5. Savory and gritty, which was a little confusing to me. But I recognize and own that I am a filthy non-purist. HOJICHA ICE CREAM: 4/5. Nutty, I do wish the flavor were deeper. HOJICHA BASQUE CHEESECAKE: 3/5. Tangy, very different than the ice cream. It split the group as a hit / miss. Not proud of it, but woman enough to admit it: I'm probably the problem. I feel like 12 Matcha is for people who have their life together. I am not those people.
Went with a friend on a Sunday and luckily, the line wasn't too bad. Waited about 30 minutes to get into the cafe and once I walked in I understood the hype. The interior was super chic. I loved the simple and modern decor and the glass water tanks with what looked like branches in them. There was plenty of seating with tables on the first floor and the basement. The basement also had a tasting room which was cool to see. The service was fast and I liked how they paced their lines so that customers could have a good experience inside. They would let a small group of people in at a time and once you were inside the service was quick. We got two matcha lattes that were lightly sweet and a slice of the hojicha basque cheesecake. The matcha lattes were some of the best I've ever tried. They were the perfect level of sweetness and you can really taste and appreciate the quality of the matcha they use. (9.5/10) They also call your name up to whisk the matcha right in front of you before they pour it over the milk. My barista was super friendly and ready to answer any questions I had about the process. It was a pleasant experience, and they also serve your items to you on a nice tray and will even bring it directly to your table if needed. The hojicha basque cheesecake was also amazing. The cake was creamy, slightly sweet, and the hojicha flavor was strong. (9/10) I was really impressed by it because basque cheesecake is usually a hit or miss for me. I would highly recommend it and it paired well with our lattes. The service was super attentive, picking up empty cups and straw wrappers almost immediately. The prices are also very reasonable and much cheaper than I though it would be in New York. The quality of the lattes and the cheesecake really sells it for me and I will definitely be back when I am in the city!
I saw this spot online and had to stop by. I went a little after they opened and there were only 2 people in line. I like that there are only two drink options. Once your drink is about to be made, they call you up and you can watch them whisk and pour your drink. I found this nice to learn about process, but can see how this would elongate any lines when it gets busy. I ordered the matcha latte with almond milk for here. They have an option to lightly sweeten. The pricing is incredibly fair at only $7. The matcha was a deep green, a bit nutty, and well balanced with the milk. I'd be intrigued to try to the hot Americano matcha when the weather is cooler. I will definitely be back and highly recommend going early!
Late to review but tried this place out with a friend back in March when we were visiting from out of town. We had known there would probably be a wait but we decided to check it out anyway. The line didn't look too bad and we got in to wait around 3:30 pm. Tip: bring an umbrella for the sun (or rain)! We ended up waiting for about an hour which was more than we expected but at some point we decided to commit to the wait and it was worth it. You get to watch them make your drink and it was all made with intention and with high quality ingredients. The staff were so helpful and the interior was also beautiful. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs as well. I would definitely come back if I was ever in the area!
12 Matcha is 100% worth the hype. I went on a Thursday and there was still a line, but it wasn't nearly as bad as what I've heard weekends are like. Definitely try to come during the week, but expect a wait either way. One thing I loved was that they gave umbrellas to people waiting in line since it was so hot outside. Such a thoughtful touch. And the matcha? Easily the best matcha I've ever had in my life. Smooth, rich, and incredibly high quality. I'll definitely be back whenever I visit nyc again!!
Definitely recommend coming early because there will be a line out the door. The menu was very short, but I got a Matcha latte with oat milk. The barista will call your name and you get to watch how they make the Matcha and experience the whole process. They also sell basque cheesecake and some pastries. I got extra sweetness for my latte and soo glad I did because the matcha taste is strong. If you don't like strong matcha taste, you probably wouldn't like this place but I enjoyed it very much!
There was a line when I showed up on a hot summer day, but they were handing out umbrellas to people waiting outside, which was a genuinely thoughtful touch. Little things like that go a long way. Walking in, the water filtration system immediately catches your eye. It is front and center and it tells you right away that they take this seriously. They carry two matcha varieties for retail, but all the drinks are made with one of them, which makes sense when quality is the priority. I kept it simple and got a sweetened matcha latte. As someone who drinks a lot of matcha, I can say this is one of the best I have ever had. Rich, smooth, and well balanced. No grassy bitterness, nothing off. Just a really dialed in cup. The space itself is nice too. Some seating upstairs and a downstairs area as well. Worth the wait, worth the trip.

Unfortunately, worth the wait and general irritation. If you are a matcha aficionado, this place may set the standard for you. As far as a matcha cafe in the US, I haven't had better. Even at opening, we wait about a half hour to get in to order (I don't wait for any BS in a line but this may be the exception). You understand why once you get in, the experience is slow, methodical and personal. Only a few matcha stations and each person makes it in front of you. The scent when that hot water hits the matcha powder as they begin to whisk..is euphoric to me. Just lovely. The best matcha latte you can get in NY period. The matcha ice cream as well as the basque cheesecake are sensational. One of my favorite places. Recommend. read more

My friend took me here during our last trip to NY! There was a really long line and at first, I was like it better be worth the wait lol It was a little hot and the wait was about 30 minutes. They are really organized with the wait. After finally entering the building, I immediately understood why it was taking so long. You order at the register then you wait to be called to watch the employees make your drinks. They make each drink manually by hand, they use alkalized charcoal water, and they measure the matcha powder and water for consistency. One of the best matcha lattes I've had in the city. I was fortunate enough to have stopped by when there was no line so I got to go straight in. While there was no line outside, there is a bit of a wait inside as the matchas are made to order and the staff prepares each drink with care and expertise. My matcharista (matcha + barista) was friendly and answered my questions about the charcoal water filter and how they make their matcha lattes. Since there's limited seating available upstairs and downstairs, I felt like I was a bit rushed drinking and eating my order. I couldn't take my time to savor the experience because it felt like the staff were constantly tidying up and preparing for the next customers to sit down. Damn, the wait was super long! Even on a weekday, I had to wait about 2 hours! The hype is still going strong. But I have to admit, it's quite good. When I inquired about the matcha, they did confirm that it's from a matcha farm from Uji, Japan (so you know it's the real good stuff). They also pride themselves in having found the best process for making a perfect drink. They use a specific Japan wood infused water which you can see inside. They also measure every gram of water to match powder ratio - almost have it down to a science. You can order an iced or hot matcha drink. You can also opt for an added sweetener, but honestly wasn't too strong in sweetness. The richness of the matcha powder was apparent, so it will appease the true matcha fans. The thing I was most surprised about was their ice cream. My friends and I decided to try their tri-flavor ice cream which comes with panna, hojicha & matcha flavors and I was truly impressed! Their ice cream itself is super creamy - unlike anything I've tasted before. On top of that, each flavor was so delicious. Most of all, I was super blown away by the hojicha flavor. It was super rich and had the perfect amount of sweetness. This is now become my favorite hojicha ice cream. If I had a tea or powdered form of this to make everyday, I would be a happy camper. POV you're in the mood for a quick matcha before a flight and come across this place thinking it was a casual cafe when it's actually a whole matcha experience with really fancy people LOL I visited this spot on a Friday morning and the line was fairly short, only about a 15 minute wait. Theres a hostess waiting out front to open the door for you. The shop was so beautiful and clean and also really busy! I ordered the matcha latte to go. The staff was so nice and you can tell they're not in a rush to do things, they are there to make you feel comfortable and have a good service experience. It felt like they were whispering to me LOL They call your name when it's time to pick up your order and they literally whisk the drink in front of you. I would walk past 12 Matcha often and see a massive line, so when my partner and I were craving matcha, I knew we had to try this place. When we came on a Saturday at around 11, the line was not too long, but we still had to wait about an hour before getting our drinks. We got a latte and an americano. The presentation was beautiful and the store itself was very bright with a decent amount of seating. The servers were great and had a demonstration of matcha making too. We were able to converse, and the matcha was definitely higher quality with the color and the smell. The drinks overall, however, were fine. Nothing too special, and definitely not worth an hour wait for. But the experience was great and I am glad I went. read more

12 Matcha lived up to the hype for me, although not sure if I'd stand in that line every time I wanted a solid matcha latte. They pride themselves of their single origin sourced matcha and handmade each time. I do love how much matcha powder they utilize and how we can observe the staff whisking our drink vigorously. The matcha flavor definitely very prominent in my regular milk matcha latte, with an earthy profile. Tea and milk were mixed very nicely. More importantly loved how it was cold enough without too much ice that would have diluted it. My friend's matcha latte with oat milk and sweetner was very well balanced with the creaminess from the oat milk and tad sweetner that balanced out the bitterness. We found the matcha and hojicha flavors delicious. However the hojicha one was more "powdery" and not as smooth as we had hoped. The matcha first feels really sweet but then it dissipates and the matcha hits you afterwards. The space is very cute and relaxing. Some tables/counters upstairs with a downstairs area, featuring a tasting room section. Love the plants and wood based furniture. Wifi available and people were using laptops on the weekends. Staff were really friendly - small talk at the cashier and while making our matcha drinks. Lines are long but they let people inside in batches. I think this system works so it allows people inside to enjoy their matcha drinks in peace. Definitely one of the top matcha places in the city, but not sure if superior to other places for me to stand in line every time I crave it. I am not exaggerating when I say everything here is UTTER. PERFECTION !!! Their matcha is hands down the best quality matcha I have ever had--it is so creamy and the perfect balance between bitter and sweet. I ordered the matcha latte, hojicha and yuzu ice cream, and their matcha basque cheesecake... and I still find myself dreaming about every single thing. The matcha latte is sooo creamy-- you can tell because the layers of the matcha stay intact as you are drink, meaning it is not watered down and has good density to it. Each bite of the matcha basque cheesecake was the perfect texture and blends sooo well with the hojicha ice cream. And the yuzu ice cream is the perfect sorbet-like palate cleanser in between bites! I couldn't resist and ordered the hojicha basque cheesecake to-go - and you could not force me to decide which was better between the matcha or hojicha basque cheesecake because both are so so yummy. And don't get me started on the experience of dining here! Sure, you might have to wait a while to get in (we waited around 25 mins... which I found out is not so long) but the moment you step through the door, you are treated with such respect and attention. I never felt rushed by any of the staff and it was so obvious that their top priority is ensuring an amazing experience for each customer. My favorite part is that you get to see how your matcha is made from start to finish right in front of you. Our barista was so gracious to answer our questions as we asked about the proper techniques to making a good cup of matcha and we learned so much. Their matcha is sourced for Uji, Japan (the matcha capital!!) and they even flew in a master of matcha from Japan to teach the staff how to make matcha--so you know this place is legit! The two-floor space is also so aesthetic and cozy, and I love how they don't rush people to get out of the door. I got here 5 minutes before they opened on a Saturday during their soft opening and waited 40 minutes to get my drink. The line has been consistently around the block during their soft opening. They limit the number of people that can go inside at a time, which keeps the inside peaceful, despite the line outside. They use 6g of matcha! This is the most I've seen in a cafe in New York. They use alkalized charcoal water. Personally I think this is a bit much, as usual matcha lattes are probably closer to 3-4g and I think there was a bit too much caffeine for me. But the matcha flavor is great (smooth and creamy, no astringency) and the price can't be beat ($7 for a latte with oat milk). I'd come back if the wait was max 15 minutes, but I don't think I'd wait close to an hour again. There's ample space (two floors), wifi, and a bathroom downstairs, so I'll definitely be back when the lines are shorter :) read more

I'm visiting NY and I am a matcha enthusiast. 12 Matcha is the best one I've tried out of all the places I've been to. Service/Ambiance: The service is friendly and relatively quick. The only thing is that it's blown up on social media so the wait time is insane. I would recommend coming on a weekday to beat the crowds. The interior of the shop is simple and minimalistic. The decor is tasteful with pops of green, I love it. There are 2 floors and if you're ordering more than a drink, someone will help you bring it to your seat. I'd snag a table by the windows. Drink Consensus: This is a solid matcha latte. I love the intensity of the matcha and the level of sweetness it has. The sugar is not overbearing and compliments the matcha well. I finished my drink in 2 seconds because it was that good. My foodie friend that I made in line also agreed that it was now in her top 2 of matchas in the city. Ice cream was a bit sweet for my taste but the intensity of the matcha was perfect. I didn't get the chance to try the cheesecake because it was sold out but I will be back for that. The queue to enter moves slowly as drinks are individually made to order. There are 3 employees working the counter preparing drinks. Staff will call out your name and invite you to the counter to observe your drink being made. Best way to avoid the long wait time is to arrive around opening. The matcha latte was fantastic, I would definitely come back for it. The hojicha ice cream had a gritty mouth feel at the end and I wasn't a fan. I'm lucky to work nearby because I get to snag the matcha whenever there isn't a huge line. Even before open, there is a line to get in. Because of the high demand, they have someone outside to monitor the line and make sure the queueing process is smooth and orderly. By the time you get into the shop, you are hit with the smell of, as my coworker described, the smell of Tokyo, Japan. It must mean 12 Matcha is authentic as it gets. After you order at the counter, you wait for one of the baristas to call your name and you can watch as they prepare your matcha in front of you. The experience is serene and many of the baristas are friendly and make conversation so you don't awkwardly stare at them for the whole 5-10 minute ordeal. Before writing this review, I've had multiple pastries and the matcha both sweetened and unsweetened so here are my takes. Even at 20g of sugar for the sweetened matcha, it doesn't taste that sweet and actually enhances the earthy/umami flavor of the matcha. While I love an unsweetened matcha on occasion, the sweetened matcha at 12 matcha is the move. Definitely get the basque cheesecake which is an umami bomb of a dessert. Skip the croissant because there are better ones in the area, but the financier (comes with two) is a nice treat if you're not in the mood for cheesecake. My coworker and I have already decided that our next move is to try their ice cream. And also, if you compare 12 Matcha to the other matcha options in the city, you're getting a real bang for your buck for the quality. Don't settle for matcha places that make you pay the extra dollar for oat milk, or matcha at coffee shops, wait the extra 15 minutes and try a matcha from 12 Matcha. read more

Wow- this spot is so stunningly gorgeous. The staff was so sweet and you get to see your matcha being made in front of you. You can tell they take their time to make this experience as best as possible. The matcha is sourced from farms in Japan and they tell you how they spent a lot of time trying to perfect the matcha based off water to milk ratio. They cracked the code! Everything is super dainty and special. I just wish there was a little bit larger of a size (or a bigger glass ) I just got the iced matcha with oat milk and then the madeleine cookies which were a fancy version of regular Madeline's. One of the better matcha cafes and includes bakery items and ice cream. The taste of matcha is by no means watered down. We went towards closing on a weekday so there was barely a line but heard it gets really busy with a wait of 45min - 1hr on weekends. Seating is available upstairs and downstairs. to start off our morning, we went to 12 matcha! its an intimate, minimalist cafe where they take your order and then have you watch them make the matcha every step of the way. it was really cool to see it whisked in front of us and we had great conversation with the person helping us! they have great skills here and i was impressed with how foamy the usucha was. we also learned some tips and tricks for if we want to do it at home! we ordered a matcha latte (sub oat milk) and matcha americano. one has milk and one has water, for variety :) the matcha looked really intense and dark but when i drank it, it was pleasantly not too strong or bitter! even tho i requested half sugar for both, it wasnt as overpowering as i thought it would be. the flavor was there but it was lighter and brighter if that makes sense. like a delicate matcha (???) it definitely feels refined. i prefer strong bitter matchas so i feel like i prob wouldnt come back but it was a great experience and the drink was very pleasant! read more
We waited 30min on a Sat morning to get our matcha lattes and it was worth the wait. I don't wait for anything longer than half an hour so it was a buzzer beater. They do a good job of keeping folks outside to keep the ambiance calm inside. The matcha was good and the cheesecake was good, too. Not too sweet and more of a mousse. It was fun watching them do the whole process with the hot water in a kettle and whisking. Way better to have someone do it for me than to do it myself. :) Would return. read more

Came on a weekday around 2 pm and there was a short wait, maybe 20 mins? The cafe itself is very aesthetic and clean, but unfortunately there's not much space. The setup is really cool though and you can watch them make the matcha! They put a ton of matcha - 6 grams I think, which is amazing and very worth the price. However, it is definitely a LOT so make sure you eat beforehand if you're not used to so much caffeine at once. We also got the ice cream hojicha flavor and cheesecake, so lots of matcha was consumed. read more
Performative matcha that's actually quality matcha. Honestly impressed that it lived up to the social media hype. Love the interior decor and vibes, quite minimalistic but elevated. Wow this place is busy. Long line stretching down the block. They let you in batches, so be prepared for at least a 20 min wait. But it's a cool experience- the matcha is freshly whisked in front of you, and they don't skimp on the ingredients. We had one of the cheesecakes too which was pretty good. I went on a Wednesday around 9:20 AM and got my order and sat down around 10:08 AM. I ordered the Matcha Latte (sweetened it with honey) and ordered the ice cream (2 scoops: matcha and panna). For the QUALITY of their matcha, beautiful interior, and fancy apparatus, the PRICES at this place is unmatched. $7 for a latte and $8 for 2 scoops of icecream? I consider this cheap for Manhattan. Overall, this place lives up to the hype. It deserves 5 stars. The matcha was DELICIOUS and the icecream was top notch too. The vibe of the cafe is also beautiful and service was great. I got lucky and there was no line when I arrived around 11 AM on weekday. There were a few people waiting for their drinks to be made and I waited about 10 minutes from ordering to getting my drink. The interior is clean and modern. The seats were mostly full, but I was able to get a spot. The matcha was really smooth and tasty. I would come back more often if I was guaranteed that there won't be a wait. However, it did get busier and there was a line forming outside later. read more

This place is honestly really cool. There is always a long line that I'm not sure is worth waiting in a second time, however if you've never been it's worth the wait. They do have umbrellas for the line if you walk up and ask the person at the front door for one. The wait is usually 15-20 min, maybe 30 on a weekend. Once you get in you order your matcha, I believe there are flavors in the tons to the right but I just ordered a regular. Someone will make the matcha in front of you which is the coolest part. The seating area is also very nice, they have an upstairs and a downstairs and because they are control by the flow of traffic with a line outside it's not too crowded inside. The matcha itself is very strong and not too sweet, much more of a transitional matcha so if you're looking for something sweet and milky, this likely won't be your favorite. Over all really cool place, just looking forward to the day it's a little less trendy so there won't be a line. read more
