I haven't been here in years and I wish hadn't gone today. From the moment we sat down until the moment we left, the experience was a solid 1-star. We sat down to sticky booths that looked like they hadn't been dusted or cleaned in years. I didn't want to lean back and let my hair touch it. That kind of a booth. Next, we ordered coffee. The server said it comes with half and half and as she was about to walk away, I remembered my friend liked milk so I said, "oh don't you prefer whole milk." The server said they serve half and half with coffee and they don't have whole milk just 2% and if we we wanted anything else she could pour water in it. Normally this banter would be fine. This wasn't banter. She was annoyed. We stuck with the half and half. We looked at the menus that were COATED with sticky stuff all over the plastic and falling apart. It looked like a studen'ts notebook after a full year in grade school. We ordered a strawberry lemonade. Normally, my daughter will drink anything. It tasted like chemicals. Since two of us ordered two different types of benedict, the server came with sharper knives. She then WIPED THEM CLEAN with a towel hanging from her pocket. 20 min. later we got our order. Well 2 of us did. Mine was the wrong item so had to send back and they had to make me the correct one. No apologies from our server. We then had to ask for a third place setting. The server got it and when my daughter was using the benedict knife, the server took it FROM HER HANDS and gave it to our friend since she was eating french toast. The food was not good. The french toast tasted like dry bread coated in eggs. In other words, it hadn't soaked up any of the batter. Sat at the bar on Father's Day with a clear view of the kitchen. I watched an employee wearing gloves repeatedly scratch her arms, including putting her gloved hand under her shirt. She then continued handling food without changing her gloves or washing her hands. Once I dumped the bread out I could see a couple of woefully undercooked bits of onion-not caramelized at all - horrible excuse for French onion soup. Then a "Cobb" salad. The hubby and I went to 13 Coins in SeaTac and had a great experience. For starters, our waitress was on top of it from the minute we sat down. I really appreciated her being honest when I asked her opinion about a few things on the menu. I always like when the staff will give a real answer instead of just saying everything is good. We got to sit at the counter, which I think is the best seat in the house. But this time we got even luckier because we got to sit toward the back of the counter where you can see the whole line in the kitchen. I've been to 13 Coins for years and somehow had never sat in those seats before, so I was pretty pumped about that. We started with a couple appetizers and they were both really good. The jalapeño steak bites were my favorite. So flavorful. We also had the fried zucchini, which I normally don't order, but these were done perfectly with a really nice crispy crust. My husband ordered the Wagyu bacon cheeseburger and I went with the Philly steak sandwich. Both were great. We also ordered garlic fries, which I had no idea they even offered. We watched the cook toss them with garlic and grated parmesan and they were so good!!! Side note for anyone who used to love the antipasto plate with the bread and butter. They still offer it, you just have to ask for it now. It used to automatically come out but now it's by request, which honestly makes sense. With a long layover at SeaTac, I crossed the street to 13 Coins--supposedly a Seattle institution. The place sits unassuming in a corporate building, but inside you'll find classic old-school booths that gave me hope for something good. I hit happy hour on a slow night, yet somehow service still dragged. I went for what seemed like safe bets: pepper beef and pesto clams. Being in Seattle, I figured the seafood would be a slam dunk. Wrong. The clams were aggressively overcooked--dry, rubbery, and clearly not fresh. The pesto itself had decent flavor and the crostini were fine, but when your star ingredient is that bad, nothing else matters. The pepper beef's creamy sauce tasted good (hard to mess up cream and pepper), but the beef quality was dismal and cut so thick it turned into a chewy workout for my jaw. Here's what really stings: I went back to the airport afterward and found genuinely better food at a terminal restaurant. When SeaTac is outperforming your "classic" Seattle spot, something's gone seriously wrong. 13 Coins might be trading on nostalgia and reputation, but the kitchen isn't backing it up. First of all, I never would have found this place but I have a friend who works for the FAA at SEA-TAC. Walking into 13 Coins is like being let into a secret or a club. It feels like a place known only to locals or to those who happen to wander in from the nearby hotels. Situated directly across from the Sea-Tac airport at the bottom level of a sleek business building (a lot of the clientele are no doubt from this building), this is a great find. It's pricey - and it's worth it - which is more than we can say for several other restaurants in the area of the same price bracket. Giant leather backed booths and seats, fantastic dark "private club" type décor, attentive and professional waitstaff - LOUD but amazing chef in the kitchen (they call out to the assistants constantly; it's a vibe (?) - it is noisy for that reason; however, the restaurant itself is completely insulated from the outside. You can view the greenery through the giant windows without actually hearing any traffic or airplanes. Fun part is you can hear them when they call out and start cooking your order :) We ordered the chicken wings starter, then the scallops entree and the steak and eggs (they serve all meals all day and up to around midnight). This is the kind of place I've been looking for since I moved here - a place open late with options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
