So far, this is the best barbecue that I've had in the Phenix city/ Columbus area. Bonus points that they do sliced brisket because most bbq restaurants don't even have it on their menu. I was feeling in the mood to try a new place and I heard mixed reviews around Phenix City and Columbus about this place. So is decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I stood in line for 25 minutes with only two people ahead of me. When I get to the counter I had to wait even longer. Was frustrating. I had a couple questions about the menu since I have allergies. The lady was not wanting to help and said "maybe you should step aside and study the menu harder so we can take care of other guests" Wow. Nice. Thanks. Anyways, we eventually get our food. We pulled into the parking lot full of pickup trucks, all full sized Fords and Chevrolets. A fair number of work trucks, which is always a good sign to me. There was a fellow splitting huge logs of oak. Entered the door of the small, freestanding cinder block building, that is half a hair salon. On the right door, entered to a cacophony of happy diners, folks chatting and catching up. The kitchen is directly in front a of a large cooking surface, directly over the coals. Large numbers of butts, dogs, sausages and all manner of meat. Special is written on inside of a ripped cardboard box top with a bluish magic marker. Yep, I'll take that. Meat and 2 sides with a drink for 8$. "Can I have it sliced outside?" Yes, or course. Thank goodness. Very friendly, only 3 people in kitchen, and you can just walk up and order. Then, stand while they prepare it for you. Other patrons wait patiently, and the food is ready QUICKLY. My wife wisely orders the 'world famous' pork chop sandwich, which is a huge deboned chop, also smoked over the fire's coals. Big, fat hot dogs for kids, and one got a ham sandwich with, you guessed it... thick chunks of smoked ham. They smoke EVERY meat on the menu. It was all quite good. The Brunswick stew was okay, the only average item. All others were stellar. This is the road gem we all search for. Why not 4 stars? Sauces were decent with the mustard being the best. Nice people. Option of getting inside, outside, or mixed meat cuts. Meat was not cooked long enough to make pulled pork. Not much seasoning on the meat, but proper smoke ring and flavor was nice. Not the best I have had, but would return to try ribs. Meat bit back, I prefer more tender meat. We tried this little BBQ joint this past week. My husband got their famous pork chop sandwich & I got the BBQ pulled pork sandwich. All sides cost extra but with the 2 sandwiches, 1 small & 1 medium potato salad & 1 medium BBQ beans with 2 drinks it was only $18. The pork chop sandwich was simply amazing!! It was huge and so tasty! As for the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, they use a mustard type flavor BBQ sauce and I was not a fan of it. The potato salad was creamy & not chunky at all. This has been my favorite BBQ spot in the area for years. No use in a pissing match on who has the best BBQ in the area since there are lots of places with excellent BBQ.
