The produce selection is very limited, and the quality of the fruits and vegetables is pretty horrendous. Usually there is only a handful of wilted/bruised/moldy produce available to choose from. From the pictures below - moldy taro with little flies everywhere, 2 wilted celery bunches left, and dehydrated soft oranges for sale (hard to tell from the picture). (I recently went to Hong Kong supermarket and was shocked by the perfect-looking fruits and vegetables there.) Lastly, the produce guy thinks that he is the police, following me as I look through numerous cases of their bruised golden kiwi. I finally selected a case when he wasn't around, but had to go through almost 10 cases to find a decent one. I wouldn't recommend this place for their fruits and vegetables. read more

As with all markets, always check the prices when you are checking out. I was buying coffee which was supposedly on sale for $2.98 a bag per the sale sign they had up. When I went to pay, the price was $3.79, and after confronting the cashier, she had someone go to the aisle and check the price. She had the sale sign in front of her and compared it with the product and initially agreed with me that it is the SAME product. The name is the same, the original price is the same, everything is the same except for the UPC code. They called over a manager who said, no it is not the same product and that the one that is on sale is sold out, which is a big fat lie. The brand of coffee I was buying only has one kind/one flavor. But after the manager said no, the cashier changed her words and just kept arguing with me that it was for a different product. I kept insisting that it is indeed the same product, but all they knew how to say is NO, as if I was the one that was wronged. They didn't even apologize for the error. I do not believe I was wrong. The sale tag was right under the coffee that I had gotten. If they wanted to make a customer happy, they could have just honored the sale price despite the incorrect UPC. This is called false advertisement. I did not buy the coffee due to their terrible attitudes. I never had an issue with this market, but they literally just lost a customer. I will be more wary with what I purchase here should I decide to come here again. Other than that, this market is usually more busy on weekends, and they have food sampling stations on weekends. If searching for cheap bread, they occasionally have a table with half priced breads. Quality and pricing of produce can be a hit or miss. Sales are okay- not all items are necessarily cheaper than neighboring markets. read more

This is one of my go to markets when I'm looking for some Chinese/Vietnamese groceries. They recently remodelled the inside and are currently still working on a few things, but they are open. Loving their new freezers and coolers. Prices for meats and seafood are good, and they finally except tap pay! This weekend they are giving away stuff depending on how much you send in store. Store does not follow their own hours!!! Been here several times at least an hour before their advertised Covid-19 closing time, and at least an hour and half before start of riot related quarantine, and they've been closed. If you need all your employees home by quarantine, and you can't remain open past 3:30pm, please advertise your hours to reflect that, and NOT inconvenience customers with deceptive hours. I would avoid ALL their bagged veggies, except maybe mushrooms or gai lan. They all have a lot of sand, debris, and bugs. No amount of rinsing will successfully rid of those buggers. From my experience, you have a 10% chance of buying rotten/sour/bad packaged products (like tofu) that require refrigeration. Their coolers are fine. But I suspect they don't consistently damage out anything accidentally left out, and instead just put it right back for the next customers. I pretty much just shop here for imported packaged snacks. It's about 15-25% higher than their nearest competitors (Cali Mart, Hawaii and Valley Supermarket), but they do carry certain unique items. As do all the Asian markets. One last thing. They force you to buy their reusable bag. Just about every store, including their competitors, has been temporarily providing single use or multiple bags free. 168 and Aldi's are the only two stores that I've been to where that is not the case. Since Aldi's business model never included free single use bags, and they are significantly cheaper, that's far more understandable. read more

So funny thing about Chinese businesses and American holidays - Chinese people don't seem to care. This place was open on Thanksgiving, and Mrs. C and I were happy to stroll in and shop around. This place's strong point is sauces. They have Asian sauces here in abundance. Whether you need soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, hoisin, sesame oil, fish sauce, sriracha, rice vinegar, oyster sauce.... you name it, they've got it. The fruits and vegetables are also pretty good, and I've always like the freshness of some harder-to-find things like Vietnamese basil and golden kiwi. Snack aisle has lots of Japanese influences, and you'll find plenty of Japanese snacks and candy. Tea selection is ok. The frozen section is pretty big, but it's mostly 100 different kinds of frozen dumplings. Take pity on the poor Vons grocery store that this used to be. It was so empty and rarely had any shoppers. It seems kinda unfair that now it's a Chinese grocery store, it's busy all the time. But I'm Chinese, so I'm not exactly helping matters. Grrr @ myself read more

Shopping at this 168 market for three time since two months ago. I feel that they don't have any good management to organize all their items. If you shop there you will see ado many the items have leave on the floor for a long time till no one taking care of. Just bought 5 packs of fresh won ton noodles and found one of pack is turned color and have the mold in it. When you walk through the seafood section that you can smell those stinky and awful but most unbelievable things is the workers set up the raw fresh water fishes with the Japanese sushi raw fish together. This store is not like a normal market running in U.S. it's Like a local store in a village without system. read more

I work here. Here are some tips to make your trip more pleasant: If you want to beat the long, long lines come on weekdays. Avoid coming on the weekends, I mean seriously avoid them like the plague. The lines are crazy long. But if you must come, try to make the trip in the morning. If you want fresh, non-rotting veggies and fruits, come in the early morning before all Asian grandmothers and mothers get the best and you're left with the junk. I also see plenty of people who love to just line up instead of looking for an empty lane. Theres more lanes near the main entrance. The customer service counter can also ring up items for you so be sure to look out for it. When the parking is full, you could always park behind CVS. Its hard to explain but theres a little road that leads to the back parking. Theres plenty of space and it's closer to the market. Say hi too. I'm tall with spiky hair. read more

This 168 supermarket is one of better one in the valley. Easy parking, just make sure don't park near CVS since your car could get toll, the interior is huge. It used to be Vons, so that make sense. If you already don't know most Chinese supermarket in San Gabriel Valley are former franchisee. What I like here more than any other market is they huge selection of microwave food, lots of freezer. This is basically 99 ranch, since they sell many same items and even same promotion deal, but usually with some new items that you don't find in 99 ranch. read more

I rarely, rarely come here. However, it can sometimes satisfy your needs. It takes a lot of comparison shopping with the neighboring supermarkets to get the cheapest prices. Sometimes it's Hawaii(more than not), other times it's 99Ranch, and then sometimes it's 168. Of course, this is just talking about the Asian markets. Why would you compare 168 to an American supermarket? Anyway, 168 sometimes has very good prices. If you're reading this, it might be too late, but they sell some of the commonly used/eaten Lunar New Year items at a REDUCED price! What's so good about that? Because other places like Hawaii and 99Ranch usually INCREASE their prices on these kinds of items as the holiday approaches. So why does 168 do the opposite? No idea. Maybe they want to steal costumers. Asian grocery shoppers are usually pretty loyal to the markets that have served them well in past times. However, that contradicts with the notion that Asian people are quite cheap and go for the lowest prices. Shrug! Anyway, parking is a HELLUVALOT easier to find here than 99Ranch and ESPECIALLY Hawaii. Other than that, it really takes some pricing knowledge to know where to get what. Have fun! I hope management had changed since it first opened. When Vons became 168, some of the inventory stayed such as Mexican jello, dairy and sausages. It sat there for over a year I bought fresh soymilk one time and found Kurds of cottage cheese. It took a few chunky gulps to realize the undeliberate process of fermentization. This is one big supermarket (formerly Vons) mostly patronised by folks from mainland China. So, be prepared and expect China's courtesy (none), attitude (i.e.buy and/or get lost and dirty looks) and cleanliness. Excellent seafood selections but prices range from moderate to not that special. Same goes to meat and poultry. General groceries are definitely higher than Hawaii's or San Gabriel Superstore Fruits and vegetables (they look old and tired) sections are messy on Sundays (inconsiderate shoppers). Again prices range from special to not that special......... Since the prices are alleged to be cheaper than their competitors (really?), expect to shop alongsides with messy cheapskates. This supermarket is seriously made for people like me. I really missed Vons when they took over but after a while, this became my favorite Asian supermarket. Not only is it close by, have parking (though not always close parking), the selection is exactly the things I eat. I love that they have a hot pot section where you get all the things you need for do-it-at-home hotpot night with the family. From a variety pack of fish, shrimp, and lobster balls to thinly sliced meat to the soup base. They also have a mini bakery for my Hawaii bread cravings. Of course, it's not one of the bigger supermarkets in the area but they do carry most of the popular items. They got samples on the weekend, too. The only downside to this market is that the seafood section is not too big if you're wanting fresh seafood. Majority of it are frozen type. The store is a mess and is very disorganized. It was crap compared to the one in Vegas. No employee acknowledges your existence - even if you're asking for assistance. I've been here numerous times even when it originally use to be Von's because it's conveniently located across the street from my house. I've even had my car towed here before. :) I love this market because it's one of the few Asian markets in San Gabriel Valley that takes all forms of credit as well as offer cash back with no restrictions attached. I've come here to swipe for gum once or twice even. The majority of my visit is to get exceedingly cheap fruit, good fruit too, that's littered in crates right at the front entrance. You can grab a bag of cuties (real ones) for under $3 and during yellow mango season a box of 6 for $4.99. Fruit is never that cheap elsewhere! Or that abundant! Plenty of parking as well. read more

This is an awesome market. You can get huge, delicious crab here...even better than the beach. They steam everything for you. They have fresh skrimp....haha I mean shrimp, clams, lots of wonderful fruits and vegetables and there are probably about a million things that you can make with all of their ingredients. There are plums, papayas, mangos, coconut that are sweet and delicious. They have all kinds of sauces, sweet sauces, salty, pungent... They also have lots of sampling and this really is great. I especially LOVE one of the samples that I had of this ABSOLUTELY delicious Korean salted, and slightly roasted seaweed. Its just a mecca of wonderfulness. read more

I used to be habitual customer of 168 supermarket until yesterday. The quality of the product and the altitude of the customer service annoyed me. In the evening of Mary 11th, I purchased one six-pack beer and later found out that the expiration date is a month ago. I was upset on the fact that they sell expired food, so I return the market today for a word with their staff member. I stated that the beer has already expired and asked them for a refund or a substitution. They denied both and treat me as an importune customer, which deeply pissed me off. If anyone would like to purchase food with valuable price, there're plenty of supermarkets in that area, and the 168 Market might not be a sensible option. read more

I am a fan of this market! I try to stop by each time I'm in SGV. They have lots of fresh produce, live prawns,crab, lobster and also lots of fresh meats and fish. Everything is cheap! I like this Asian market. The items are pretty reasonably priced. Usually I alternate between 168, San Gabriel Superstore, and Hong Kong market, since sometimes only one of these stores carries the item or food product I need. I avoid 99 Ranch since the parking is crazy (even on weekdays) and their items are quite expensive. This is the only store in S.G. Valley that sells fresh and organic Maitake mushrooms, Even Mitsuwa Marketplace in Las Tunas does not have this fresh/organic Maitake. 168 also has some good deals on Asian veggies which you would be hard pressed finding at Ralphs or Vons. My only caveat is they sell it buy bulk in plastic bags. This of course is to prevent grandmothers and mothers from mashing up the veggies with their bare hands. They got good Salmon eggs and other Japanese sushi fish in styrofoam packs in one section. Their meat selections are just okey. I like the selections of meat at S.G. Superstore better. Their Trung Nguyen ground coffee is one of the cheapest among the Asian stores in the S.G. Valley. The 168 staff or employees are friendly and helpful compared to the S.G. Superstore staff which are harried and too busy to help customers. As for the crowd or clientelle: it varies from the rude and inconsiderate to the courteous and polite crowd. Avoid coming here on weekends; it's a hellish madhouse - from the parking lot to the inside of the store to the check-out lines. It's Brutal ! It's well lit and not darkly lit like Shau Fat or Hong Kong Market. Their centralized A.C. is kinda set high on Cold. Brrrrrr ! read more

The three C's. Clean Cheap ... cute? Okay, maybe it only fufills two C's but it is still a great place to shop regardless. The meats and seafood here is soo fresh compared to 99 or other local markets in the area. I personally don't find the place disorganized and I've only been here just a little bit over a handful of times. I know that fruits/vegetables are right there when you walk in. Meat/seafood in the back on the left. Dairy and juices are in the back on the right. Alcohol is on rfar left, I think. Bakery goods are near the exit. Frozen foods and desserts are near the bakery--front, right. In the middle are the aisles. My favorite aisles are the snack and drinks aisles. Soooo many Asian snacks of goodness. Recent purchases [Friday] 2 pounds of clams [soooo fresh and sweet and salty from the ocean, so super delicious in the hot pot/shabu shabu] salmon and tuna sashimi--surprisingly fresh lots of snacks-YAMAmotoYAMA hot'n spicy nori really is spicy! and lots of pocky ice cream pops--green tea ice creamiscles... red bean-iscles.. and other stuff... can't remember but total was 60 because my brother and i went a bit crazy on the snacks... love this market. so clean... read more

Not a bad place to visit if you need to pick up some produce and meats. They generally have good prices on fruits and their meat selection is very adequate. However, I recommend checking the expiration dates on the inventory on their shelves (mostly packaged and canned goods) before buying them. They don't cycle through them too often so some products may sit there for quite some time... As for the service here, let's just say their cashiers leaves a lot to be desired. They also run promotions sometimes on Sundays so it can get quite packed here then. Other than that, I usually drop by every now and then if I'm in the area. Pro-tip: I don't recommend parking too close to the entrances. There's a lot of foot traffic and the customers here lack a lot of self-awareness and empathy, especially when they're pushing their shopping carts around. read more

Should not have bothered to go back but I did only to receive the standard SGV service where the customer is never right. 30 mins later the manager, who would not speak with me, refuse to credit me for my merchandise which was presumably given to another lucky shopper. I grew up going to 99 Ranch Market so any other Chinese markets that open up are hard for me to compare to especially the cleanness, food and prices. I've been to 168 a couple of times and most of their vegetables aren't as fresh. This place is also not as clean as 99 ranch market. However, some of their meats and vegetables are cheaper. Example being we usually get our crabs here than other places as they tend to have a good and cheap selection. You will definitely have to come here on a down time like the morning because place usually tends to get busy and parking situation is horrible. This market is a piece of shit. My boyfriend and I came in last night to purchase three items last night. Albacore in a can, hichew and some soy milk. When we got home we saw that the fish has been expired for over a month! So we decided to go get a refund or exchange. What happens? The "manager" says we can't get one because we don't have a receipt. Are you fucking serious?! You're gonna put the health of your customers in jeopardy just because of a receipt? Other places like walmart or target does exchanges WITHOUT receipts. It's because this place is owned by some China man or woman that they gotta be so stingy about things. You know what she told me? Great place for fruits and veggis! Way way cheaper than Vons or Ralphs. I just moved down here from up North and first made a shopping spree at Ralphs and Vons. Spent like $50 at one and $40 at the other. I knew there had to be an asian market that I could go to get cheaper groceries. Not wanted to go all the way down to Ranch 99, I found 168. Kinda scary sounding because of its resemblance to 187... haha i don't know why that comes to mind. Anyways, the place had lots of parking even though it was packed with shoppers! I had to wait at the cart return area just to steal a cart from some old man as soon as he took his bags! I went in and found really cheap strawberries, bananas and peaches. Much much cheaper than the aforementioned grocery stores. The overall market was pretty clean and the cashiers were pretty friendly. It's still crowded with pushy asian women and it's always fun to see people poking at the 'fresh' fish sitting on the beds of ice. They are so cheap they dont even provide paper towel for hand drying. Being a germaphobe and having common sense (I guess) I always use a paper towel to open the restroom door. It's health class 101. You do not wash your hands and touch a public restroom doorknob. WTF is that point of washing your hands otherwise? You might as well not waste water. Your pee and feces is probably cleaner than that door knob. WITH THAT SAID, this place doesn't provide paper towels for customers. Dont even ask me why I used the restroom here, let's just say there were a few times when I was desperate enough. Here's a little thought to contemplate over. This is a market. There are people handling your meat, fish, vegetables, and etc. Sure that's all well and ok because even if these people end up spreading germs everywhere you still get to go home and clean the meat, fish, vegetables yourself. What's scary is that this place also gives out samples. Something to think about. I guess what I'm trying to say is Give customers and your workers some goddamn paper towels. They are not that expensive. BTW the meat department is in dire need of Febreze. It is PUTRID. read more

Perhaps it's because they took over an old Vons that was previously an old Smith's (the western facade is a dead giveaway.) The aisles here are big and I did NOT, and I repeat I did NOT run into any little Chinese ladies with a shopping cart. This place has character. They give free balloons on Saturday and Sunday to children so the Chinese parents can keep track of their midgets by looking for the giggling balloons. And remember what drew you to Costco in the first place? The free samples that can stand-in for lunch? This place had tons of free stuff to try. Lumpia. Seasonings. Drinks. This place is f**king disgusting and is packed to the brim on weekends. Bring the crappiest car you have available to you if you dare brave this place on the weekends, because I predict there will be a 1 in 2 chances of getting hit by someone in the parking lot. My mom personally has gotten our Lexus RX400h hit 4 times while she was shopping from the terrible drivers here (I won't list any stereotypes here, but I find it TRUE when driving in this plaza). This was on 4 SEPARATE occasions. We still pester her today to not drive the Lexus here. Anyways, I was picking up some groceries for my mom and battled the nightmarish parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. I was probably in the parking lot for a good 15 minutes fighting through a fleet of drivers who take at least 5 tries to complete a simple 3 point turn. Drove me nuts. The produce here is dirt cheap, but at a cost. The green onions were on sale for 15cents per bundle but they were already starting to rot. The greenish tinge was replaced with brownish slime and it seemed like all the other vegetables were rotting also. I would rather spend a little more $ and go elsewhere for better product. Plus there are plenty of old Asian ladies who rudely shove in and out to get what they want, even if you were waiting there patiently for someone else to be done. Thank god they couldn't understand the f-bombs I was dropping when pushed and elbowed away. The seafood selection here is huge, and is probably the highpoint of shopping here. The tanks look really clean compared to most Asian markets and had plenty of fish/shellfish/and exotics to choose from (saw huge skate wings and live conch for sale). The cashier was undoubtedly slow but both her and the bagboy were pretty nice and spoke English pretty well. Do yourself a favor, go to 99 Ranch, H Mart, or Mitsuwa for your general Asian ingredients and needs. read more

Nicely located in the heart of San Gabriel, this super market is one of the best I shop for my groceries, when visitng my mom. Great fresh seafood, and good selections of food. If you're into cooking, and like to use only fresh meats, vegetable,then this is the place. Oh did I say they alway have weekly sample food? Yes everyweek they have few small tables, to offer best buy of the week, so you know you can take advantages of the deals. They have EVERYTHING! Came here to get things to make Pho and found that they actually have things that aren't Chinese/Vietnamese as well unlike most markets. Their service is above and beyond. I couldn't find the fresh Pho noodles so when I asked the manager, she not only told me where it was located but also walked me up to it and showed me their variety. When asking for help, make sure you basically jog. These little Asian ladies can WALK. Overall, prices are a bit high, but great service and such a great variety of groceries. read more
