    Old bank vault door

This coffee shop used to be an old bank. There's a really neat bank vault door inside to look at and the coffee is really good too and the people are nice.

Toasted White Cheddar and Ham sandwich was very tasty! On it were apple slices and a sauce that was a great new twist.

The mashed red-skin potatoes were very flavorful. Baked chicken and shredded meet with au jus - yum! We dined in the spacious upper room. The stiff back chairs were not comfortable after hours of driving, but we were there to focus on the region's history and the stories. Service was efficient and inviting. The moist carrot cake was a standout. Do try it! All in all, a good time.

I saw ductwork in the rafters; maybe the AC was not working? We went for Mother's Day brunch. It was probably not their best culinary showing, buffets usually aren't. I was not a fan of the Cheesy Hash Brown and Egg Casserole. It was the texture, not so much the taste. The French toast was a good mixture of cinnamon and sugar, but only if you could find the pieces that weren't dried out. I liked the bacon: salty, well cooked and crunchy. The flank steak was tender and tasty. Prepared to a perfect medium and marinaded in a nice meaty broth. The chicken in the Lemon Chicken Piccata was overcooked, dry, resulting in a tough chew. I did enjoy the Mushroom Strudel. A moist dish with a tasty gravy drizzle. I would've liked to try the bread pudding with caramel sauce, but they apparently ran out. The other desserts were ok. They looked like they were hastily cut into slices and served on the thinnest of paper plates. I could tell those running the place were also a bit frustrated; they made their feelings rather vocal, easy for all seated to hear (that's like a major rule of restauranting: the issues in the back should never be exposed in the front, where the customers can hear.) All in all, not a good first impression. But, I am willing to return and have a normal sit-down meal. Then I can see how they do. I have been told that their service and food is usually pretty solid. We shall see.....

The space is located along the Wisconsin River and the large windows in the cafe allow for a breathtaking view while enjoying lunch. The menu is quite small which I appreciated but still had a hard time deciding what I wanted to enjoy because they all sounded so yummy. They use fresh local ingredients as much as possible ensuring that they support the local region and aligns beautifully with the concept of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a rainy day so I opted for comfort with grilled cheese and a soup of the day. The gooey cheese sandwich with aged cheddar and Gouda paired perfectly with my potato bacon soup. My friend opted for the kale chicken salad that included ingredients for a scrumptious fall salad with pepitas, cranberries, butternut squash, goat cheese and sherry shallot dressing. The set up is order at the counter, find a seat and they bring your food to you. It was a really quiet day and our food came out quickly. The staff seemed to be out of sight much of the time so if you needed something it was a little bit of a wait. I had asked for a box but they didn't bring it and I ended up having to ask again.

Today a pickup was in place and a window appeared to be opened. The red neon OPEN sign steadily signals in Morse that today's the day! An assortment of burgers start off the list I'm interested in, and I see also chicken sandwiches an broasted chicken in assorted numbers of limbs and parts. I'm told onions for rings, though on the menu are apparently so scarce that they can't be offered. Last night at the store I fear I may have purchased the last few onions available if what she tells me is true. Can't be, I'm certain there were plenty more. Sitting waiting for my bacon cheese burger supremes (supreme, I've deciphered from the menu means lettuce tomato and mayo are the elevated status items.) Mustard and pickles adorn the lower tier offerings. No prices clutter any of the 5 misc. menus, which suggests, if you have to ask, you can't afford to eat here. A bold statement! I ordered two bacon cheese supremes. $16.seventy something. For a sorta shabbyish joint these seem a tad costly. I had to ask, so it's evident I probably can't afford to eat here. But the burgers in the bag the lovely woman now adorning the window with a nice smile, smell pretty darn good. The un polished and sad looking roadside attraction that hides a gem is indeed a worthy contender. My +$8. Bacon cheeseburger Supreme, is indeed deserving of every one of the 800 pennies I paid! Even knowing I had to wait, and it was barely warm, it was among the best of the better burgers I've ever eaten. Because I bought two, I have another one for later tonight. Even cold I'm still going to look forward to it. Having access to a microwave might be worth risking. But hot or still warm, Gordon's is a place I'll not pass blindly moving ahead!
