Used to be a favorite spot for a tasty healthy lunch and a matcha. The last time I went the soup must have been microwaved for so long it was stuck to the cup on the sides. Like thick and dried. I was going to take it back up but it had taken a really long time bc they forgot and microwaved again and I didn't want it any hotter. And the last several times I visited my matcha was a different price each time but I always ordered it the size and same way. Clean restrooms. read more

A large latte is priced at $5.25. When I get my order they charge me 6.95. That's a $1.70 difference. They add .95 for oat milk. That leaves .75 unaccounted for. Past several times I've gone, my coffee is not even hot. It's lukewarm. Disappointing, especially if I'm spending that kind of money on a coffee. However I was pleasantly surprised to see they took off the divisive Back the Blue stickers. I quit going there because of that for a while. Besides that, the service is fast and friendly. read more

I was here in early March and we met here for coffee and tea and then decided to stay for lunch. You go up to the counter and order then they call your name and you go get it. The place is decorated nicely and had an upstairs, but we were downstairs the whole time. Table was small for 3 people and chairs were not comfortable. I got a medium tea and got a latte for my daughter. She said it was ok...had better, had worse. The hit of the first part was the blueberry scone. This was not a "traditional" scone, but it was wonderful!! Loved it!! Went back to get another one and they were all gone. After planning our day, we decided to get some lunch before heading out, as it was almost noon. So we stood in line again and ordered. I got a sandwich combo that was supposed to be half a BLT and a side of chili. The chili was ok, not good, just ok and very small portion. The BLT was on a small bun and had a small piece of bacon and a half piece of tomato. Only thing that was the size of the small bun , not a burger bun, much smaller, was the piece of lettuce. The worst meal I had in all of Montana. Certainly not worth the 10.50 I paid. I will not return when I go back to Helena. read more

Love this coffee shop!! Had the opportunity to meet the owner today. He's wonderful - cheerful, friendly, and funny. He also has a good outlook on his industry and overall a good head on his shoulders. I was very pleased to make his acquaintance. I love small family owned businesses like this one. There are multiple gluten-free choices for both breakfast and lunch. The gluten-free white chocolate huckleberry scone was amazing! Just the right amount of sweetness (I don't like crazy sweet) and didn't crumble to pieces. It was fresh and moist. Completely amazing. I forgot to take a picture, but the ribeye steak sandwich with grilled peppers and onions on gluten-free bread really hit the spot. It also was big enough that I was well-fueled for hours. They make their own in-house pumpkin spice and it was available in JULY!!!!! When I asked for a gluten-free sandwich, the almost never seen thing happened -- the barista asked if I had Celiac disease so they could take proper precautions! I wanted to jump for joy! There's some comfy seating upstairs and there are plenty of plugs so you can settle in and get some work done. I like the variety of seating too -- bar height, table top, comfy chair, couch, etc. The shop was running a special this week donating 15% of proceeds (when you show the card) to The Learning Center. And the window has a Marine Corps Toys for Tots screen on it. The owner cares about and participates in his community and it shows. The service is quick and super friendly! The decor is very nice. I love the "summer tree" in the corner downstairs. Veterans are recognized here with a place on the wall to add their name and service details. I will really miss this place when we drive out of Helena. read more

The service of the staff is the best. Mostly young people who seem genuinely happy to be working their. The food is also good, the coffee great and the ambiance friendly and casual. Plenty if tables and chairs that welcome a small group discussion, a place to study or just a nice relaxing place to enjoy a great coffee. I highly recommend 1889 Coffee House. Service is fine but food is disgusting. Smoothies don't look taste smoothies. I mean, they are literally gray. Showed a co-worker my smoothie and she thought I was joking. Sandwiches are small and overpriced. Out of my 3 attempts to try this place, it wasn't good. The people who work there are friendly, which counts for something. I had seen a picture of a cinnamon roll someone posted online from 1889, and it looked good. So I got up Friday morning, went into town, and went through their drive thru. The roll came in a big styro container, but did not feel very heavy for its size. When I got it home and opened it, I discovered a very large cinnamon roll with the texture of one that had been baked two days ago...extremely dried out. I tried to resurrect it in the microwave with very limited success. It was quite a disappointment, because my habit is to go to Park Avenue where cinnamon rolls are always fresh and tremendous, and I was "giving this a try." The quality of this item was so inferior that I'm actually surprised they sold it...because if you let something like that go out the door, it's a sure thing the customer will never order it again. It would have been better for them to throw it away, even though that would have been wasteful. read more

Disclaimer - this is a review solely for their breakfast burrito and I have borderline pretentious standards for burritos coming from LA, where I grew up eating breakfast burritos weekly (probably not that frequently but it definitely felt like it.) [Star1] Food quality? I'm sorry but this was the saddest breakfast burrito I had. There was just a lot of tortilla folded over in each bite and not enough filling. It was just eggs, bacon and cheese. Surprisingly it had a loot of bacon but the flavor was just not balanced. No star here. [Star2] Price Point? Again, just commenting on the burrito here but I could get a better breakfast burrito for a similar price at a fast food joint like Carls Jr or Taco Bell. No star. [Star3] Service? Only Reviewing drinks - This was our first time and we went through the drive thru. There were three of us. One is a die-hard DD fan and ordered a black drip coffee with cream and a Splenda. She gave a 3.5 out of 5. The 2nd is a coffee connoisseur and ordered a latte with whole milk - he rated it 3.5 out of 5 as well. Both said it's good but not too special. I ordered a hot latte with Oatmilk on accident-I always get iced lattes (all year round) but one sip and I'm in love! I love a good espresso drink but I think they score tougher than I do. I had been on a quest to try all the independent coffee houses in Helena and I tried 1889 on a Saturday morning. I like the space; there's lots of seating and an upstairs also. The cashier was friendly and prompt. I wasn't a fan of the nitro cold brew coffee - nitro to me has a creamy head on top and take a little bit to settle. I am not sure if the tap wasn't pressurized or not but the coffee was ok. I also ordered a breakfast burrito with ham. That was overly heated and too hot for a few minutes; the ham was deli and the scrambled eggs were over cooked also. I expected chopped ham instead of a slice of deli meat. I ate it for the protein and fuel for the day but won't order it again. read more

They are not wearing masks during a global pandemic. They consistently get orders wrong and charge you for the more expensive often. Yesterday I ordered peppers for $1 in my burrito, had no peppers. My sister in law ordered a drip coffee with almond milk-she received an almond joy latte which she hated as it was too much sugar and also several dollars more than just a regular drip. Today I ordered and was charged for a snickerdoodle iced latte, got just a less expensive regular latte. The burritos also vary in size from day to day even though the order is the same. That makes no sense. Their coffee bean display is also extremely cringeworthy in the year 2021.... Also please put up another one way sign in your parking lot for your out of town guests! There is one near the drive thru but not the other entrance, we drove into oncoming traffic leaving yesterday because neither the business nor the street have any one way sign properly displayed!!! read more

My husband and I are in town for a wk and we dropped by 1889 and glad we did, it was attractive driving by and it was attractive inside. Their nitro cold coffee was amazing! I also liked their latte, I added toasted marshmallow syrup in it and loved it with extra shot of espresso! This is quite the not-so-hidden gem. We just moved here & boy am I happy to have found this place. Coffee is great. Nice branding. Good offerings. Food is FANTASTIC! They use quality ingredients & everything is fresh. You'll find some interesting offerings such as the Nacho Grilled Cheese & pulled pork. You wouldn't expect bakery food to be gourmet but somehow 1889 pulls it off. Their treats are NEXT LEVEL, especially their cookies! Probably my favorite thing about 1889. Fresh & oven baked on location. I was told that the pastry chef gets super creative & makes all kinds of different cookies every day. You can even call to request that they make a certain cookie for next day pickup. My favorite was the espresso cookie. WOW! Best cookie I've ever had!! Be sure to ask for your cookie to be warmed. They even offer seasonal cookies like the chickie & bunny bottom for Easter! I really appreciate that 1889 makes an effort to make this a fun place for kids. Kids meals are high quality, with fresh & juicy apple slices, pressed apple juice, Mac & cheese is bistro quality, & their peanut butter / jelly sandwiches are just like mom makes. My kids even got to meet the Easter Bunny! A highlight of our weekend! A one stop destination that the whole family can enjoy. I plan on coming here at every opportunity. Came through the drive-thru as a car full of first timers with two dogs. Staff was friendly and helpful. I had a White Mocha that was delicious. And the pup treat was ham chunks, which the dogs totally loved. My friend ordered a drink with half the caramel and somehow got extra caramel, which was a bummer. However, I would totally go back. This place is good and it was a good sign the line was long. Also, being from Seattle (and a coffee snob) was slightly sad there were no cold brew flavored cream options. A good coffee house with decent product and prices. They offer soup and hot foods and not just the baked goods typical to a coffee house. The upstairs seating area is cozy and comfortable and conducive to studying. Staffing can be hit and miss on quality as some of the younger staff will choose to keep socializing rather than acknowledge a customer right away. Overall, it's a good local coffee shop. read more

Actually, unbelievable!!! I didn't walk into a hardware store, a movie theater, or an insurance broker's office, I walked into a 'coffee house'...or so it would seem. No one knew how to make a cappuccino. The not very clean looking (I guess manager) came to the rescue...or so it would seem. After instructing the young ladies as he was 'building' the cappuccino, I received by and large hot water with a slight hint of coffee flavor. He did not put a shot of espresso, he instead poured some (a little) hot coffee from the dispenser instead of building the drink professionally. Banana Bread...or so it would seem, was by and large tasteless. I would strongly suggest you PASS on this establishment and seek other options in Helena!!! The worst were the sandwiches, where the rib eye bbq sandwich looked to be made with creamy hamburger and the turkey had nearly raw bacon on it too.
