I was here in early March and we met here for coffee and tea and then decided to stay for lunch. You go up to the counter and order then they call your name and you go get it. The place is decorated nicely and had an upstairs, but we were downstairs the whole time. Table was small for 3 people and chairs were not comfortable. I got a medium tea and got a latte for my daughter. She said it was ok...had better, had worse. The hit of the first part was the blueberry scone. This was not a "traditional" scone, but it was wonderful!! Loved it!! Went back to get another one and they were all gone. After planning our day, we decided to get some lunch before heading out, as it was almost noon. So we stood in line again and ordered. I got a sandwich combo that was supposed to be half a BLT and a side of chili. The chili was ok, not good, just ok and very small portion. The BLT was on a small bun and had a small piece of bacon and a half piece of tomato. Only thing that was the size of the small bun , not a burger bun, much smaller, was the piece of lettuce. The worst meal I had in all of Montana. Certainly not worth the 10.50 I paid. I will not return when I go back to Helena.

So friendly! Great place to play a game or visit with friends. My salad was so fresh and tasty!

Love this coffee shop!! Had the opportunity to meet the owner today. He's wonderful - cheerful, friendly, and funny. He also has a good outlook on his industry and overall a good head on his shoulders. I was very pleased to make his acquaintance. I love small family owned businesses like this one. There are multiple gluten-free choices for both breakfast and lunch. The gluten-free white chocolate huckleberry scone was amazing! Just the right amount of sweetness (I don't like crazy sweet) and didn't crumble to pieces. It was fresh and moist. Completely amazing. I forgot to take a picture, but the ribeye steak sandwich with grilled peppers and onions on gluten-free bread really hit the spot. It also was big enough that I was well-fueled for hours. They make their own in-house pumpkin spice and it was available in JULY!!!!! When I asked for a gluten-free sandwich, the almost never seen thing happened -- the barista asked if I had Celiac disease so they could take proper precautions! I wanted to jump for joy! There's some comfy seating upstairs and there are plenty of plugs so you can settle in and get some work done. I like the variety of seating too -- bar height, table top, comfy chair, couch, etc. The shop was running a special this week donating 15% of proceeds (when you show the card) to The Learning Center. And the window has a Marine Corps Toys for Tots screen on it. The owner cares about and participates in his community and it shows. The service is quick and super friendly! The decor is very nice. I love the "summer tree" in the corner downstairs. Veterans are recognized here with a place on the wall to add their name and service details. I will really miss this place when we drive out of Helena.

The ambiance was very minimalist, and the dining room was basically empty when we arrived. Again, the food looked better than it tasted. There was nothing objectively wrong with the food, it was just not great if that makes sense. The chicken on the chicken and waffles was crispy, hot, and fresh but the flavor just wasn't there. The breading was good but that is where the flavor stopped. The waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and they even used real maple syrup! But again the flavor was just lacking for some reason. We ended up taking half of our food home with us which is NEVER a good sign. I might give this place another shot on a different day. Also, the coleslaw on the chicken sandwich had no flavor which made the sandwich even less impressive. Nothing to see here in my opinion.

She felt that was self-explanatory, so I took a chance & ordered it anyway. The second item I asked about was the Cafe Mocha, which is described as half coffee & half hot chocolate. Dawn repeated that to me; I went ahead & ordered it, because it's a nippy day outside, it sounded good, & Steve's prides itself on "whole bean Italian coffee". Dawn asked if I wanted whipped cream, & yes--that was the best part of this hot drink. It tasted like hot water with a bland chocolate flavor with no coffee flavor to be savored. Disappointment in a mug for $3.75. The Cafe Monte Cristo Sandwich looked promising when it arrived...but when I tasted it, the only thing which was flavorful was the bacon. The ham & turkey sliced deli meat was absolutely indistinguishable for any flavors of ham or turkey! ($14.95; scarcely any powdered sugar on the French Toast, either, which is a hallmark of a Monte Cristo...& no, it isn't deep-fried in any batter, but the French Toast is a clever substitution & departure from the original.) I ate half of it & boxed the other half...the French Toast was bland, too--very little flavor. My side item was something I always look forward to here, because so few restaurants serve onion rings anymore! These are a $2.00 up charge, & I told Dawn I like them on the light side, not too dark--& these came out close to being dark, & they must have sat in the grease, because they were tough on the outside...not the best onion rings by far. Disappointment again! I came here anticipating another great experience at Steve's Cafe, & it was completely disappointing until Alivia appeared: Alivia noticed I appeared to be waiting, & I was--because I saw on my check that the Cafe Mocha comes with ONE REFILL! Dawn never mentioned nor offered me a refill, but Alivia did--& yes, that's exactly how to spell her name, which is pronounced as "Olivia". Alivia gave me a to-go cup with a lid, & whipping cream & all, that excellent but of genuine "Customer Service" kept this review from being one star! Purely because of Alivia, I will return to Steve's Cafe the next time I'm in Helena, a 100+ miles from home! Thank you, Alivia, for saving the day for me: The next time, I'm asking for you as my server!

I ended up getting the three egg breakfast, with linked sausage, hash browns and a couple lemon ricotta pancakes. My friend got two eggs, the huckleberry French toast and pork linked sausage. First, let's start with the positive notes. The place was clean, there dining room was big with plenty of open tables, our server was super nice and we were seated right away, the food was good for the most part. My over medium eggs were perfectly done, my lemon ricotta pancakes were delicious but the entire experience was ruined when the server brought out the bottle of TABLE SYRUP instead of maple syrup! I realize this is a small business but I haven't eaten Mrs Butterworth syrup since I was like a child. Anyway, the pancakes were fluffy, delicious and perfectly done, the sausage however had a soft mildly off-putting texture and the hash browns seemed old and had no flavor. I would come here again but not for the hash browns or table syrup.

Pretty darn good…read more I'll caveat this with my coworker had some issues with his order, but they corrected it promptly so great service! The food comes out super fast, and it's as I mentioned pretty darn good I cannot complain! The po boy I got was tasty, and just enough food to keep me happy for the afternoon. This spot definitely rocks for lunch with it's speedy service and laid back atmosphere. The food itself, as I said it comes out fast! Like, questionably so but it wasn't bad so I can't complain haha. The one thing I didn't love is the cheese in my Po Boy got stuck to the wrapper it came out in so I lost a lot of cheese to the paper. Let's chat about ambiance fast, it's an interesting atmosphere very american but also very New Orleans at the same time. I like it but the walls are a smattering of different themes and ideas which makes for a somewhat incoherent atmosphere. Still, the music was at a good volume for conversation and for work. So yeah I'm happy!

Haven't been here for some time and decided to try them a second time. Had a cup of gumbo with a…read moresmall jambalaya. Generally most places will serve gumbo with a scoop of rice in the bowl but Zydeco just mixes it all in. The jambalaya was "just okay" and needed a boost of flavor and heat with some Crystal Louisiana hot sauce. Overall, not bad but I have had better. Oh , and about the beignets - come on folks! These are just deep fried squares or lumps of flour drizzled or dusted (or, here, drowned) with powder sugar. (Warning: Don't wear dark clothing, don't breathe or blow air on your beignet if they are still hot because, if you do, everyone will know know what you had for dessert!). The "service" was "just okay". Now you go up to the counter and order first. Get your own table and cleanup by taking dishes over to a tub when you're done eating. That's fine, not hard. But why pay a big tip for little to no customer "service?" As noted in other reviews I have asked: How does one gauge a tip when you order first at a counter, pay, find your own seating, get the food, and then expected to bus your own table? Under these circumstances, I'll tip 15% up front If I'm expected to pay first. I can always provide an extra tip for "extra" ordinary service and/or food before I leave. While I like the patriotic theme - and as observed the last time I was here - the place is a little outdated and could use a facelift.
