This is probably the most worst experience I've encountered in a restaurant/pub in Arden-Arcade. I went on St. Patrick's Day at about 630pm and it was very busy. Understandable. Now, we all know that AA is not very diverse when it comes to ethnicity. I was able to find a seat at the bar (I was there alone), but was lucky...so I thought. There were about 3 bartenders. After sitting for like 10 minutes+, I was never told "I'll be with you shortly" or any kind of acknowledgement whatsoever. Next to me, an older white gentlemen came up to bar and Breece (bartender) got him a beer right away and he wanted to cash out as well. She never looked my direction or noticed me at all. She really didn't make eye contact, which I thought was weird, because the bar is very small with about 8 chairs. She then proceeded to serve an older white party of 3 at the end of bar. Still, no eye contact or acknowledgement to myself. So, I wanted to leave, but I was there to have a drink in remembrance of my Grammy who is straight from Ireland. I was adopted by a white family and I'm E. Indian. I have celebrated SPD since I was adopted at 2 years old from In India. In fact, my first American meal was SPD corned beef and cabbage. My parents didn't think I'd touch it because I was use to lamb and goat's milk and so on. But I gobbled that food down like I was in American heaven. My parents were so surprised and happy that I could get to loving American food (not Indian food). So, it's a big tradition in my family to celebrate SPD. Anyways, after 15 minutes of sitting and waiting for service, I asked for a manager. I saw her delivering food and doing everything to help out. She was very nice. I told her that I didn't want to make an issue, but Breece totally ignored me and served other people without making eye contact at all. I also said it was not a race t thing, but it really seemed to be. (I have worked at Zinfandel Grille and Ruth Chris Steakhouse as a server, hostess and bartender, so I know the feeling when customers feel out of place. I do everything to make sure they are taken care of because sometimes they feel the vibes of looking different in an ALL WHITE establishment). The manager got me a taste of a beer which was supposed to be the strongest one, a 9% level. It was not bad, but not great. I felt that Guinness was stronger than what I got. But, I drank it anyway. I watched Breece interact with everyone else, but she seemed so racist. At least that's how she made me feel. I now understand how customers of other ethnicities feel when they are ignored. I was at the point to where I wanted to ask Breece why she didn't acknowledge me, but since the manager served me, I let it go. I did however walked out without paying because I felt that offended. I'm sorry, but I'm not giving my $ to an establishment that clearly doesn't like people of color and makes it obvious. I hope that Breece reads this (I'm posting her pic), and maybe learns to treat all customers equally, not just white people there on a day that mostly white people celebrate. I have NEVER left without paying a tab anywhere, but Breece made it very obvious that I was not wanted there. I did not make a scene or even ask Breece why she didn't at least say hello, I'll be with you, or anything. I will be telling my friends of all different nationalities that 19 Handles is not a place to go, especially if you are of color. Not one restaurant in Sacramento has ever made me feel these kind of vibes. If my husband was there (he is black/white), he would have straight up had us leave and go to Pitch and Fiddle, or even Flaming Grille. I live in Arden Arcade and eat out at a lot of places to find cool places and check out different foods. I will not come to 19 Handles with him or without him EVER AGAIN! Bye Breece. Their food menu is extensive with some European flavors mixed in. The food comes out from the kitchen quickly and attractively prepared. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable and you can enjoy their personal touch. I'll start with the good news: I liked the general vibe. Kind of an attempt to recreate a pub in Dublin or Liverpool, without forgetting it's in the States. Also, I like that they get creative with their soju drinks. Oh, and aside from the blue cheese dressing that was so generic and bland that it was hard to distinguish from ranch, I really did enjoy my salad w/chicken - it actually had something in it other than lettuce and tomato! Bravo! Unfortunately, three strikes say this was our first & last time: 1) I ordered my drink with diet soda. It was served with Sprite (or their version of that). Not the same thing by any measure! 2) We ordered mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. After about 10 minutes, the people who came in 5 minutes after us were served piping hot mozzarella sticks. 5 minutes after *that* we asked if ours were coming any time soon. 10 minutes after *that* (about 25 minutes after ordering), we were served *cold* mozzarella sticks, along with the explanation that ours had indeed been served to the other table. I'm guessing what we got was theirs, which had been sitting out, not even under warming lights, for the previous 10-15 minutes. 3) My wife ordered the fish & chips. What she was served, in her words, looked like "it had been left in the fryer to die." The darker area you see in the picture was *rock hard*...inedible. I suggested she crack it like shellfish and try what's inside. She correctly pointed out that she wasn't supposed to have to do that with a simple whitefish like this, but she tried anyway. She said there was effectively no flavor. As for the "chips" - if you like Burger King fries, you'll be right at home. Sorry, we won't be back. read more

We've been going here occasionally for a couple of years now, and the food has generally been good, along with their beer selection. They've got great burgers. We might not be going back anymore, however, as we've felt somewhat unwelcome lately. Not sure why, as we tip well, are no louder than the other customers (it's not a quiet place, what with the TVs and general conversational volume), we practice good hygiene, and dress appropriately for its casual ambiance. We tend to get along well with wait staff at restaurants and really aren't jerks to servers or anything. It's hard to put our finger on it, but as an example, the last time we were there, my spouse got up to use the bathroom right before we left, and the waitress told him not to go in because they were broken. As we were leaving a few minutes later, another guy went into the men's room, and the same waitress did nothing to stop him. Really odd. It's just been an odd vibe there lately. Maybe it's political, as the plethora of American Flags suggest the owners are on the "Conservative" side of things compared to typical brew pubs, but we rarely discuss politics over dinner, and it would be hard to be overheard there if we did. If you like burgers and brew type fare, it's worth checking out to see how the place works for you. read more

Lots to look at on the walls as well as TV's to watch the game. For food I got the Adonis burger. Delicious with lots of flavor. Thick patty and a nice soft bun. The fries had a nice taste as well. We also ordered the fish sandwich. This was excellent. Great flavor and a nice size piece of fish. Not overly fried just right. We would order both these items again. Found this place by accident when we were out running errands. Decided to stop here for dinner last night and it was really good. I've been to 19 handles a few times and every time I have gone I've gotten a friendly sense of community from the staff. I've been a few different times for brunch and ordered the eggs Benedict, they are always so flavorful with the eggs being cooked to a perfect poach. The potatoes that come with them are crispy and I like the bell peppers that come with them. When I've come for dinner or happy hour food I've always appreciated that they have a dedicated vegetarian menu with so many options. My family really enjoys coming here and trying their craft beer. Ok so we were in Sacramento to see the in law. This place is right down the street from them. They had never been so we stopped by to check it out. The wife and were hungry so we got brussels sprouts and wings. I'm so glad we did the food was so good. The staff was so nice and friendly. We've been coming here occasionally for that past three years since we moved here. Don't know why I've never thought to do a review. Food and service have always been consistently good. Artie (The then-owner) was always there and took care of the business with a keen eye on quality of food, beverage and service. Unfortunately, Artie retired and sold the business to someone else. First I always order French Fries, Artie used to Brag about how good their fries were and that they make them fresh to order, every time! and they were always fantastic. This time they were overcooked and appeared to me to have been re-cooked after sitting in the bin for a while. They WERE NOT ARTIE'S Fries! And then, what used to be one of my wife's favorite items changed miserably for the worst. Chicken Strips at 19 Handles rated up at the top of favorite entree's with their Fish & Chips. This time instead if STRIPS, it looked like nuggets. And they appeared to be mostly breading. So we talked to our waiter and she said that's the what they changed to. We said we were not happy and she said they would replace it and what came out was simply small bread filets that looked nothing like the strips of before. So we shared our discontent with the resolution and asked for it to be removed from the bill and even said that this was a GIANT Change from the Artie years. And that this could be the last time we come here because of the change in the quality of the food. She apologized and said something about the new owners. The service and atmosphere of the place has always been spot-on in our opinion. But Food quality is Too important to me to accept sub-par food. read more

Even though we intended to get lunch, we got the goulash omelette and prime rib omelette off the breakfast menu on a weekend. How often does one see a goulash omelette on a menu? The plates arrived with a little salad on the side which was nice. The goulash was delicious (as always) served on top of an omelette. The prime rib omelette plate also had a small side salad. The menu described the prime rib omelette as having 3 cheeses. It arrived with just one (Swiss). I didn't miss the other cheeses, but someone else might. A pleasant surprise was finding mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers in the omelette under the prime rib. I don't recall it on the menu. The omelette did needed more seasoning. The prime rib was thinly sliced and had a nice smoke flavor. Again, the differences from the menu worked for me, but might not work for everyone. read more

I think the garlic buffalo shrimp was very overpriced and nothing special but it wasn't bad quality. I tried the strawberry margarita which was canned but it tasted good. I would only come back if I wanted beer and I would try an entree or cottage pie. The service was really friendly. The taps were being serviced when we got there and we had quite a long wait to get our beer. We ordered food first and were nearly done eating before we got our beer. The food was very good. Our server seemed very distracted. We didn't get napkins or silverware for quite a long time. She spent a lot of time apologizing instead of hurrying to satisfy our orders. The artisan roll was nicely toasted and soaked up au jus very well. Everything was a bit salty for my palate, but that is professional cooks. We did not have dessert as the sandwich was very filling. Came in at 8:30 on Friday night. There was one person at the bar and we were the only table. No problem. The server/bartender was nice and doing a nice job. We get our food, everything was great. Then a few minutes after 9pm, the server and another staff member start cleaning. At first there was a slight Pine Sol smell. However, within 5-10 minutes of the cleaning, including now mopping the floors in the sections surrounding us, the Pine Sol smell was OVERWHELMING. We could not even taste our food or beer because all we could taste and smell was Pine Sol. Keep in mind, this was an hour before closing. We had to get the rest of our food to go. My husband and I found this amazing gem of a restaurant today while enjoying our afternoon together, it has great casual atmosphere with awesome wait staff we were helped Brianna P. and she was incredible and very knowledgeable about the menu and the array of beers offered at the bar. the food was outstanding and plated well. they offer a menu for your dog if you choose to bring your furbaby there is a open patio and food and treats for them! (love that!)
