Amazing. I came in about noon and they were close to out of morning pastries, you want to get there before 10 if you want to get your choice. That said, no matter what you get, it's going to be awesome. I asked for one of each thing they had left, figuring that I'd try it all and that if the crowd faves were gone, I'd be judging the goods based on the less loved stuff, and if those were good, the loved ones must be amazing. And I'd know whether it was worth the drive (I live out by the lake) - a raisin thing that looked like a galette but is made out of croissant dough, a thick slice of plum pudding bread thing, a plain croissant, and a quiche. The raisin thing didn't make it home, it was so delicious I couldn't stop nibbling on it on my drive back across town until it was all gone. I haven't had a real croissant in years. I've had things called croissants, which looked like croissants, but they weren't actually croissants. I've lived in France off and on. This is the real deal. So buttery and flaky, with the lovely springy chew that real croissants have. I was in heaven. I've sampled the plum pudding bread loaf thing and it's also wonderful. Fresh and bright and with a bread pudding texture but not so wet that you can't eat it with your fingers. I'm going to have the quiche for dinner. I've learned a few things: 1) 1900 is a damn good bakery, IMO better than Wheatfields by a mile, 2) get there before 10 if you have your heart set on a lemon croissant; 3) bless the kids who opened this up, the shop has wonderful bright energy with real, genuine sunshine and happiness, there's something really refreshing about just going into a shop that is owned and operated by people with such good intentions 4) they start baking bread mid-day and it's ready to buy by 2, and they usually still have fresh bread by 5. I'm sure that this bakery will be a wonderful success. The baked goods are delicious - perfectly made and with care. They also have cafe seating and a l33t espresso machine, the young man who was crafting cappucinos looked like he was having a lot of fun and cared about what he was doing. These pastries are as good as any I've had (and I've been around the proverbial pastry block both at home and abroad). And, they are made with love and attention to detail! The bread is fantastic--if you are looking for a dense, nutty-tasting loaf. Perfect for soup night. All their breads have assertive flavors and textures, quite unlike those dainty pastries. These bakers have range! The service is always excellent. Unlike some hipstery places in Lawrence, where studied apathy seems to be a requirement for the staff, the people at 1900 Barker are warm, friendly, and welcoming. Great food and coffee drinks. Staff are very friendly. The parking lot is small, but you rarely have to wait long for a spot to free up.

This place is a hidden gem of a food lover in Lawrence, KS. The staff are so friendly, the place always smells amazing but most importantly the goods they offer are delicious, so thoroughly and perfectly done, and just awesome! I am amazed every time I go. I have a love/hate relationship with 1900 Barker. That's not entirely true - so I suppose I should explain. Love: They have the best coffee in Lawrence, hands down. Their summer galettes (little pie-like pastries) are incredible. The croissants are out of this world. He ambiance of the bakery is simple, elegant and fits the neighborhood perfectly. The two guys who run the place seem to know more about coffee and bread than any two people I have ever met. Their passion for their products is unlike any shop owner I have ever seen. It's the type of place where you go in for coffee and leave with the best bread and pastries you've ever had, because they are nearly impossible to resist. Hate: they taught me what coffee and bread is supposed to taste like, and now I find myself comparing everyone else to their products. Unfortunately, nothing else around here lives up to their products. In the grand scheme of things, I suppose that's a good thing! read more

Come here for the baked goods!! The cinnamon rolls are fluffy, flavorful, and talk about pull-apart, yeast risen, heavenly pastry goodness, this is it. The yeasted loaves of bread (every variety) are delicious. So is the amazing breakfast quiche (perfect crust!) We also love the COOKIES, all full of oats, chocolate and nuts. And don't forget the croissants! But don't come here for the low prices (there aren't any!) Bread runs around $8 a loaf, depending on the variety, and they aren't huge loaves. The croissants are over $4. Everything is expensive here. The seating (and parking lot) is very limited, so you can't expect to sit down, necessarily. There are literally 3 tables and a few counter seats. They don't have a bread cutting machine, but will slice it for you by hand if you ask. They are closed on Monday. And if you arrive too late, they may have run out of what you're looking for. read more

I was so stoked to find this cool cafe just the other day. Having just recently moved to Lawrence I'm looking for "my coffee joint". The ham and cheese croissant was simply delicious. I had finished my coffee and went up for a refill. I was told that they don't do refills and that I would need to purchase another cup of coffee. I paid $3.50 for the first cup of coffee, and now I would need to drop another $3.50 for a cup of coffee, FOR A CUP OF COFFEE! I know that a business needs to make money in order to keep their doors open, but really, no refills on coffee. I would guess that the actual cost of a cup of coffee would be in the neighborhood of .25 to .50 cents depending on overhead, etc... So had I decided, which I didn't, to have a second cup of coffee it would have cost me $7.00 plus tax. Come on guys, when you have a customer that just dropped over $20 on two croissants, a latte and a cup of joe the least you can do is offer them another cup of coffee (maybe you could sell yourself on this practice by knowing that you've already charged them $3.50 for the first cup). I would love to come back just for the croissants but can't bring myself to do it. read more

1900 barker. A place that smells like your grandma has been baking all day long. A place that warms your heart and fills your tummy. A place where the delectable, gorgeous latte tastes as good as it looks and a loaf of bread only lasts you a day because it's so delicious. This is one of my favorite Lawrence places that I come from KC just to visit. Plus, the brothers who own the place are always sweet, gracious, and inspiring. Years drinking espresso and I can say this is the best place to have one. Also, they make bread that will help you live 100 years the way it was supposed to be: dense and nutritious; not that crap other bakery sell without an ounce of nutrients. Went there for the first time, and was blown away! The pastry is light, airy, buttery, and flaky. The vanilla pastry filling was creamy, flavorful, soft, and had the perfect amount of sweetness. The cold brew coffee was authentic cold brew. (Not like other coffee shops that use hot coffee poured over ice and call it cold brew.) Prices are on par with other quality coffee shops in the area. If you are looking for a tasty pastry and a superb coffee drink, then you need to try 1900 Barker Bakery and Coffee. read more

The food and coffee is awesome, but the service is poor. It's probably just inexperience, but we got our coffee in too small of a go cup with milk to add in that wouldn't fit. The lid also didn't fit and ended with coffee spilling out. All of this was for an order for eating in. Maybe everyone was tired, I don't know. I will probably stick to buying bread, if I can make it in on a day when they actually have it. read more

Truly the best cinnamon bun in Lawrence and the world beyond! And the bread! I love a loaf that has been baked until it achieves that dark, nutty flavor on the outside while still moist and delectable inside. This bakery has A+ product, a gorgeous interior, and I want to love it, but the place definitely suffers from hipster-itis in the way it does business. By this I mean that the proprietors seem to focus more on ensuring they have an ideal experience in their self-created wonderland, while having only passing interest in the customer. For instance, they are not open on Sunday. A bakery not open on Sunday. Do they not think customers would fancy a baked good on Sunday? Another example: They are a bakery and one of their specialities is bread BUT they don't make bread on Tuesdays. I found this out when attempting to buy bread on a Tuesday. No apology or explanation was given, just a shrug. They also don't have a slicer. They will slice the bread by hand, but when the store is busy, this slows everything down considerably for the other customers in line. Another example of not caring all that much about customer experience: Their delicious, flakey baked goods come served in to-go bags, which is fine if you are taking it to go, but quite messy and kind of a pain to eat if you want to enjoy it in house. When we requested a plate, the answer was simply, no we don't have those. Huh? SInce no explanation for these short-comings has been provided I can only surmise that the business owners can't be bothered doing dishes, or making bread on Tuesday or getting up on a Sunday morning. Maybe a slicer goes against their well-curated aesthetic? I hate it that I often leave this place feeling more irked than satisfied, because I love the concept and the product, but palpable arrogance/obliviousness is hard to overlook. read more
