Sold me a fake Crystal Pokémon game for my Gameboy Color that isn't fully working. While visiting Ikea, I decided to search up local retro video games stores and 1UP Videogames Covina popped up, so I decided to give them a visit. Parking can be busy during peak hours and finding the storefront as a first-timer was a bit difficult due to lack of signage or thereof. Entering the store I was greeted by two young ladies and a presentation of a vast selection of video games, memorabilia, and novelty items. I had asked one of two ladies if they had any Gameboy color games and was pointed to a glass case. I was searching for Pokémon games in particular and was told all of their copies were "Reproduction Models", meaning they are fake emulated cartridges of the game. When asking to test the games, she seemed annoyed or bothered, but still gave me the opportunity to do so. At first, I was hesitant in purchasing one, but the lady offered me $25 for Pokémon Crystal and ASSURED me it worked. The price was a bit steep, seeing as you can buy these "Repo" Pokémon games off Aliexpress for $5 w/ free shipping. But, I didn't mind supporting a local video game store, until I got home and started playing the game... Everything seemed in working order, just as the lady promised, until I noticed the clock feature was not working in-game and in addition, the PokeDex was glitching out. I.e. Showing Pokémon that I hadn't seen or caught yet. Unfortunately, I purchased a corrupted ROM version of the game and I should have known better. I likely won't be making the return trip to get a refund, who knows what the policy is there, so I'll likely just keep the game and take it as a lesson. I wouldn't recommend buying any reproduction games from this tore as they likely don't test the games themselves or assure quality. read more

I used to come in here when this place first opened and it was pretty good then. Now....not so much. I went in there a few weeks ago looking for a few different games. I was looking for literally almost any Pokemon game for the GB/GBA/DS and he barely had any. I think he had maybe Gold but he said that he didn't have it in stock. I also looked for a few games for the N64 and his stock was lacking. I brought some games in to turn in. I thought I might get maybe....7 bucks them because I priced them out at GameStop and that's how much they said I'd get. I knew they weren't worth anything, but he didn't even offer me $5 for it. So he gives you less money than GameStop. The store itself is disgusting and cluttered. I don't know how anyone can find anything. The prices for the video games are okay but the prices for the gamecube controllers are really ripped off. $35 for a used black purple or silver gamecube controller is very expensive. Don't forget you have to pay tax. The orange is $50 (maybe $40 might be fine). If they could change the prices on the GameCube controllers, I would come. Update: I would be flattered if they could assist me or be nice about it yet they have the balls to go ahead and call me out for it. Very unprofessional. Great selection and the desk girl is nice although she talks to people about random stuff and ignores customers a lot , but this store doesn't not honor their mistakes and switches cases on games. Went in and found a game I'd been wanting forever at a price so low I'd never seen it, the game case looked like crap so I thought that was why but I didn't care I just wanted to play it. I asked to grab the game and they said no and that the price was incorrect, that it was an old sticker. They wouldn't change their mind or even give the smallest discount for it. Ive bought a lot of games here in the past and had 5 other games I was going to buy that day from them along with my partner who also wanted a few but instead we left. Probably petty but the way they said "oh that's boss man's personal collection so it's more expensive" even though the games in that case looked like trash in terms of condition was gross to me, and then to not honor their mistake. They have alot of retro games here and everything is behind a display shelf with glass, they expect you to find what you're looking for and it's not even alphabetized or anything...worst is some of them have other games in front of it so you can't see all of them, Just stacks of stuff sorted by console. Understaffed, and even if you got someone, they're not sure how to help you, just the to open the shelf and watch you inspect the game... not very great customer service. Owner stayed behind the counter and didn't help until some lady came in all loud with her child. Owners should do better and learn how to actually manage a business. read more

This place is dope. I found my Mom's old gameboy, which sadly had a busted screen, and thought it'd be cool to get it fixed and give it back to her as a gift. I'd seen this place driving down the street for years, but for whatever reason I just never went inside. I figured that they might be able to help me out with something like this. Once I got there, the staff were super helpful and, after a few short days, set me up with a new backlit screen for a pretty fair price. Yikes, um. I came in looking for an AV cable for my Saturn today. Big store and nice selection, I looked around for a bit before asking the person behind the register area if they carried any. I saw them give a quick glance behind them, at a small section of loose/boxed wires out of an entire back wall FILLED with them. I was told that they didn't have any, and I was a little disheartened, but I kept looking anyway. I went back to the glass case with all the Sega games/controllers, and what did I see? Exactly what I was looking for, I counted the pins on the connection and everything. I went back to the cashier and asked about it, and then I was told that "the wires in the display cases are held for the console bundles we sell" (not the exact wording, but that's what I remember). That was when I lost all interest in staying, because... I really didn't see the logic in that statement. There weren't any loose Saturns in that case, and there was a boxed console on top of another display case, but that gave me more questions than answers. If the wires are intended to be sold WITH a console, shouldn't said wires be already in the box, or at LEAST next to a loose console?? I felt like I didn't want to be helped. I didn't even want to ask about the other composite wires on the wall (I only noticed them hanging next to the ceiling, after I talked to the cashier a second time), because I felt like I'd get brushed off with a simple answer with some attitude or something. I came out to this shop (around a 20 min drive) to see if they could repair my 3Ds charging port. The piece costs around 5$ and takes like 10 minutes to switch out, but i didn't want to risk ruining my system. The worker there tried to charge me 60$ for the repair stating, " Your system is pretty scratched, its gonna cost you a bit for a system repair". I told him that i only needed a charging port repair, then he proceeded to say that it would cost the same because," the piece was hard to find and costed too much." We have scored some really fantastic finds here over the last year and a half - including some Japan-only game systems, cheap but tough to find games, and various cables and the like. The owner is chill and I am always glad to be able to support a local business rather than going to eBay or something of the like. I appreciate that they stock consoles and games from throughout the years, including XBOX 360/PS3, which sounds dumb and obvious, but with Gamestop dumping all of their stock from that generation, I'm bracing for a lot of the games that were once commonplace might get a bit tougher to find. Great place with a huge selection of video games from old to new. Went in a couple weeks ago and was greeted by the workers of the store who were very friendly and helpful. I bought a copy of Pokemon HeartGold for cheaper than any place I had looked for it before, and it was guaranteed authentic (unlike a lot of eBay or Amazon sellers). Upon inquiring the prices of several games I was interested in, they were the least expensive compared to a ton of other retro video game stores I've been to. It seems they also repair consoles if needed. While their website is a little lacking, they constantly post on their instagram on their new inventory. I will definitely be returning after a few more paychecks! read more
