Pretty amazing to have found a nice restaurant like this in Sharon Springs. It's not a large place but super well decorated with interesting design and artwork. Came here for an early dinner on a Friday. Menu's not extensive but there is something for everyone. We tried the bulgogi, salmon and short rib - the last was a bit bland despite the very tasty sauce which was disappointing but the potato pave was really good. For dessert we had the very light and creamy cheesecake with blackberry sauce on the side - highly recommend that you save space for this dessert. We stopped in on a warm evening -- quite hungry! Both of us had the summer salad, a chili oil on a mix of beets and plums with sprinkles of feta. Quite an interesting mix! For the mail meal, my husband had the pasta with simple pancetta and fresh tomatoes. He felt full. I had the scallops -- which were quite deliciously prepared with sprinkles of cauliflower and a basil + cream sauce. The only challenge was potion size. I could have eaten this as another appetizer and then had a meal. The wait staff were friendly and knew we were not from the area, but made us feel welcome. We were so happy to be back at 204 Main. The atmosphere is both aesthetically pleasing and extremely comfortable. As always, Jim and his crew made us feel welcome and took incredible care of us. When you find yourself in Sharon Springs, NY do not pass up the opportunity to have dinner and a stay at this phenomenal establishment. The food was outstanding, all four of us loved our meal. Homemade pasta, mouthwatering! Ricotta and Parmesan dumplings ina brown butter and crispy sage sauce, are you kidding me? The friendly staff and clientele were delightful. Stopped there recently with my son and some friends who own a cabin close by on a Sunday afternoon, and was amazed. Looked closed at first glance, entered to find only two people inside at the bar, but was graciously seated by the owner Jim, and we all had one of the best meals we've ever eaten! From the pot Stickers, Schnitzel, house made Pasta to the Bibimbop, not a single complaint! Our server was great and very attentive to our needs. We have eaten in many restaurants on the East and West coast and outside of the U.S. Every detail - from the sear on the fish to the light pastry crust on the pear tart, every bite was delicious and thoughtful. Wonderful little restaurant with very fresh food. The owner was checking vaccination status at the door. We had 3 starters - Caesar w anchovies, pot stickers and the cauliflower steak w goat cheese. Mains were w wow! Short ribs, schnitzel w an egg, shrimp scampi and a green curry chicken dish we're enjoyed by the ladies. Sad I didn't take any pictures. Don't skip this small town gem! read more

I had a reservation for dinner here and while the food was adequate the owner ( assumption that he was the owner) a tall thin bald headed man, was very rude and after spending money at this establishment he refused to serve my husband a drink accusing him of being drunk. Talk about being judgemental, there was no basis for this slur and when I explained that he had Cancer and difficulty speaking he reiterated his despicable slur. I guess this person is very happy with himself passing judgement on his customers who are not locals and do not fit his vision of who is "acceptable" . I hope he is happy when he sleeps at night covering himself with the very blanket of security that my husband provided when he fought for this country in Viet Nam. Hypocritical and smug with a condescending attitude and I definitely would avoid this place. In general, a business in New York State may lawfully refuse to provide service to a particular individual for any reason or no reason, as long as the business does not refuse service because the individual belongs to a member of a class protected by statute. Classes protected under the New York State Human Rights Law include any person's race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, military status, sex, disability, or marital status. Classes shielded from discrimination under the New York City Human Rights Law include any person's actual or perceived race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, disability, marital status, partnership status, sexual orientation, or alienage or citizenship status. The New York State Human Rights Law provides: "It shall be an unlawful discriminatory practice for any person, being the owner, lessee, proprietor, manager, superintendent, agent or employee of any place of public accommodation, resort or amusement, because of the race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, military status, sex, or disability or marital status of any person, directly or indirectly, to refuse, withhold from or deny to such person any of the accommodations, advantages, facilities or privileges thereof, including the extension of credit . . . ." N.Y. Exec. Law § 296(2)(a). This business is discriminatory and refused service based on a perceived bias and even when informed of my husbands disability perseverated in his preconceived notion. Very disappointing from a human perspective and leaves a very bad taste regarding this town. We have eaten here many times and also drop in for drinks and dessert. Recently I had them do a dinner for my sales team. We had 30 people there and they had all the meals out promptly. The selections they gave us impressed everyone. Personally I could make a meal out of the homemade bread and the unpasturized butter they serve before every meal! the butter also comes from a local farm. During the season, I go with the Heirloom tomato salad that you can have as an app or as a meal. I believe I have tried all of their menu items and even some of the specials they offer , depending on the season. Everything is very fresh and locally sourced. The wine and beer selections are also very good and Jim is a very gracious host. It's a must stop if you come to Sharon Springs! read more

This is our family's favorite treasure in Schoharie County. Small and comfortable restaurant with the most gracious hospitality. Jim is a wonderful host that graciously welcomes you the moment you walk in the tall entrance doors. Norm's is a master chef, creating the most wonderful culinary delights that are skillfully simple and full of flavor. He uses only the freshest (local) ingredients and your tastebuds will confirm it with each delicious bite. The wait staff is so always attentive and courteous. My family just celebrated our son's graduation on Sunday with a private dinner before the restaurant opened. Norm and Jim always make it so easy, special and fabulous! Stumbled across Sharon Springs and 204 Main Bistro on a road trip to Cooperstown. What a find! We had the bibimbap and schnitzel- both were great. Walking around, I would have guessed less than 25! 204 Main was discovered searching around 1802 Beekman, a remarkable retail anomaly also in Sharon Springs We were first to arrive and had our pick of tables in a large h dining room with strong and uplifting wall art and whimsical touches here and there The owner greeted us and helped with wine selections including a very good red which was not on the menu. A gnudi appetizer in tomato sauce was accompanied by an explanation of preparation, light & delicious We already knew we were in the right place. Caprese salad, great tomatoes and dressing Very goad beet salad Finally, a hand made cheese ravioli and a coconut and rice curry with shrimp which was delicious and somehow unique. What a great little find! We were driving near Sharon Springs and had heard of Beekman 1802 so we decided to check out the store and the town. About a block down from Beekman 1802 is 204 Main Bar and Bistro. Without any cell reception in the area, we couldn't look up the restaurant and had to hope for the best. Walking in we were slightly confused what type of restaurant this is. The decor is modern, but almost Asian, yet the menu is scattered. There are Asian, Mexican, and Italian dishes on the menu. Whatever they are trying to be does not matter to me, as the food they are serving is delicious! I had seen at one of the local shops a menu for 204 Main and it included a delicious looking gnudi. This is why I wanted to try it, but either that was an old menu or the gnudi is not featured at lunch. Oh well, I tried their cheeseburger and it was one of the better cheeseburgers I have ever had. The meat was juicy and delicious and the Colby jack cheese was excellent and really tasty. My boyfriend had wanted the pork tacos, but they were not serving them that day. Instead he got the BLT and raved about it. What surprised me about his rave was that his favorite part was actually the bread! This is a guy who LOVES bacon, so for bread to surpass bacon was very unusual. All in all we were happy to have found this place. You could tell that all of the ingredients were very fresh and local and everything we had was delicious. Still wish I had gotten to try their gnudi though!! read more

Food was outstanding! I had the Beet salad with goat cheese which was awesome. The Cannelloni was made with all fresh ingredients; homemade pasta, fresh tomatoes and the cheeses were light and fresh. My wife ordered the sweet sausage with spinach and homemade potatoes fried. She ate every last bit on her plate! Very very good experience and recommend highly! Atmosphere was very sociable but quaint and relaxing with light music in the background. Open concept and very clean! We have dinner here a few times every summer and it's time to give them a shout out. We LOVE this place. From the comfortable tables to the cool ambience, and most important, the great food, anyone visiting this upstate NY area should check it out. Everything we've ever had here is delicious. For starters we particularly like the seasonal vegetables--the beet salad or spicy sauteed string beans with ground pork. For our entree, we always order the bibimbab, a Korean rice dish with spicy shredded beef, carrots and spinach, topped by a fried egg. It's wonderful. And let me add that the homemade sourdough bread is the best I've ever had. Good wine list and interesting decor with beautiful art. The service is always efficient and courteous. We try to head back to Sharon springs each year in the fall. This year we stayed at the Nash. Contemporary and spacious rooms with efficiency kitchens. Very convenient during Covid season. Jim our host includes breakfast with each stay in the 204 main bistro. There omelettes were fantastic. So much so that we also had dinner at 204 main. It's great to see owners who treat everyone so well and pay attention to all details. The bees knees cocktails was perfect, the short ribs excellent and the pear tart was delicious. It was so nice to experience their food, friendly service and completely immerse oneself at this bistro. Five stars guys. read more

Excellent place and I hope they are getting enough business in this small town to survive. Ambiance is top notch as well as the food. I always get the short ribs which are incredibly tender like they should be but also not full of fatty pieces which is common at black and blue in Albany. For an appetizer we always get the stuffed dates, we've always loved our main courses but it's actually the stuffed dates that make us come back as much as the main courses. * My only gripe, which is a person thing. The last time I ordered the short ribs I didn't read the menu well because I didn't think anything had changed. It used to come with mashed potatoes, garlic I believe and they were fantastic. This time it came with potato pave which looks cool but is just okay to eat. I also don't know if they used to use a different demi-glaze than what I got this time (vegetable now) and overall the short ribs are not the must get they had been previously. Given that, the food is still excellent I'm just not sure I'll spend the $30 on the short ribs now that part of the meal is just okay. read more

There are many reasons one goes out to an establishment for dinner. One might say, the food is the most important, another might say price point, others say ambience. Behind all of these things are the proprietors. The front of the house, vs, the back in this particular case. The front of the house, the "face" of the restaurant is a man who is, hands down, NOT NICE. Jim has a way of hand selecting his clientele . His personality changes on a dime, from congenial to over the top rude, mean and hostile. Jim has no problem verbally accosting someone, for the simple reason of arriving without a reservation. Yes, this town is a two horse town, for dinner, but each person is deserving of common courtesy and respect. I have witnessed this first hand, and although the food might be good, the attitude of the front of the house owner is not. It is said that a restaurant is only as good as your last meal there. For this place I give ONE star because I cannot give Zero stars. I will not spend my money at a location where the owner has such a penchant for being hurtful, and down right not professional. Get a seat at the place next door, or take your car and drive to one of the places out of town, you will get a good meal, and a welcome smile instead of a growl and a verbal lashing. read more

We rarely go out Saturday nights but we were at our place upstate and having spent the entire day at home I wanted to go out for dinner. Our local cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch but across the street is a new bistro that opened last year and we still had not tried...so off we went . The restaurant is on Main Street and the drive is maybe 6 minutes from our front door. When we got to Main St it was nearly empty save for four cars parked near the restaurant...funny to drive on a Saturday night without traffic, parking with no hassle and coming into a restaurant where you are greeted with a welcome smile! We sat outside and ordered...water wine and bread arrived in a flash ; we ordered and waited and enjoyed the calm of the end of the day and the amazing weather. Reviewing the very diverse menu: all looked like things I wanted to order and eat from ...stuffed dates or short ribs or pan roasted chicken for example but started with a caesar salad, good, and moved onto a Schnitzel...a good schnitzel is hard to find and the last great one was made by my mother from Vienna need I say more. Vin went for the Gnudi. Both dishes were excellent, the schnitzel was crispy and just the right texture toped with a fried egg; the Gnudi melted in your mouth. A nice Malbec to toast our good fortune and we were very happy campers. Vin and I wanted dessert but just didn't have any room. Fortunately we have the rest of the summer to try the entire menu-which we will- and I plan to try a dessert next time. I had spent the day reading David Kamp's book on the evolution of cooking and food in the US and to end the day with a delicious meal cooked with local ingredients and well prepared was spot on.Though we are miles and miles and miles away from the city so it is a treat to find like minded folks up here in the woods. read more

Let me start by saying if more stars were available I would be happy to give them to this establishment. Read on to find out why....We started coming here about 6 years ago. We came for lunch when our daughters dance class down the road was over. We were thrilled from the moment we walked in. Warm and friendly with a real metropolitan flair. Our daughters were 3 sand 6 and since there was nothing on the menu for them the chef whipped up some butter and garlic pasta. They were thrilled even though they didn't have chocolate milk...lol. We returned the following week after the dance class and had an even better experience. On the completely odd chance that we would return, there was chocolate milk!!! Moving on to our dinner last night. 5+ stars all the way. This goes for the multitude of times we have visited over the last 6 years. It's ALWAYS a great experience! Everything is freshly prepared on premises. Clean, warm, friendly and inviting. I'm sure, as in any business, not everything goes perfectly all the time. However it's unfortunate that some folks use this platform for personal gain or a vendetta. I think if you read some of the other reviews you might understand what I mean.
