Keene's best bar. There, I've said it. This is the kind of place to meet with a group of friends or just one person to meet and talk over some delicious drinks. The atmosphere is cozy. My personal favorite spots to sit are in one of the two large window tables or out on the back patio when the weather is nice! They specialize in martinis, and they have some great ones, if that's your thing. Their mixed drinks are great too. They make the best Midori Sour (my personal favorite drink ever) in town! I'm sad to say though that they no longer have my favorite beer on tap, Carlesberg. I'm dissapointed in that. The music here is chill... They always play CDs, which can sometimes be a bummer if you know a CD by heart. I personally would recommend to the management to at least pop in a mix CD every once and awhile! We DO get tired of 12 tracks worth of Sublime. But people don't come here for the music, or to dance. They come to talk and have good drinks! And that's exactly what this place is good for. read more

Not too bad of a wait considering it was Saturday night of Pumpkin Festival. While on line, the fireworks started going off and we had a perfect view from the adjacent parking lot. The boys and I went here to watch the Yankees game during the party weekend (actually, my first priority was that I was hungry and looking to drink.) We sat at the bar off to the side and had a really helpful blonde waitress take our orders. She was on point with the drinks, even if she forgot our app for awhile. I had the special Pumpkin Martini, it was spicy, murky orange and perfect for a fall night. Also, ordered the sangria after hearing a table full of girls getting refills and watching the drinks being made at the bar. It was dark red, no chunks of fruit but delicious and went down like juice. I heard later the next day that is one of their specialities. My BF enjoyed their Spinach Articoke Dip and said it was one of his All Time Top 3 Spinach Artichoke Dips. It was outrageously garlicky and I thought needed much more spinach. I tried the Pumpkin Cheesecake for dessert, it was creamy and spicy. mmmm. read more

After reviewing their martini menu, I decided to order a regular martini - no flavors, no silly names, no vodka. Apparently, the bartender has made Fake martini drinks for so long that he forgot how to make an actual gin-vermouth martini. That was one of the worst drinks I've had in years. The fries and chicken finger came from the same fryer, which needed a good cleaning. Everything tastes slightly burnt. My companions sliders were dry. Twenty One is almost always on the ball. It is a martini bar that makes fantastic drinks. Moscow mule, pomegrante margarita, and a famous Espresso Martini. Drinks can be a bit pricey for this area. Martinis range from about $8-$12. They have beer on tap and its $4 a pint - pretty standard. Food is very good. The first time I went, I had a great penne dish with a cream sauce and pan seared scallops - it was great and the chef even came out to ask me how it was. I'll admit that none of the meals I've had there since have lived up to that dish but nonetheless, the food is great quality. Jamaican Jerk wrap is very good (chicken, beef, or portabella mmm), fries are great, appatizers are half off on Mondays from 4-6pm ( I think, along with $2 off martinis), and they have great specials that typically change every week. My biggest bone to pick with 21 is the beer selection. They fill their taps up with easy to find beer and never change them. A better selection of beer and I'd give Twenty One 5stars. They have guiness, harpoon IPA, sierra nevada, and sometimes a shipyard, but the taps always stay the same. They should at least have 2 smuttynose beers, a better bottle selection, and just one or 2 taps of rotating US microbrews. Overall: Great atmosphere, amazing bartenders, good service, fantastic mixed drink menu, usually good music (paul simon often), great location, entrees priced fairly. Just needs more beer! read more

Excellent bar and good food. The place has a great decor and a fantastic happy hour. There are a few flat screens, high and low tables for dining as well as a small seating area in the back. Chalk boards line one wall describing current drink ideas and specials. I was impressed by their extensive drink menu. It appeared like a wine list but was filled with creative and delicious sounding cocktails including 21 different martinis. Their happy hour was a great deal, good-sized positions and most were fantastic. I recommended the buffalo tenders and waffles fries. Both were top notch. I was also impressed by their sauces; the ranch, honey-mustard and sweet and sour were primo. To top everything off, our server was an absolute delight. Finding seating can be tricky if you don't arrive early. The noise level is always very loud and the service is inconsistent, either our server is at our table constantly, or we can't get anybody's attention. That being said, I do enjoy both the drinks and the food served here. read more

We found this place on Yelp and thought we would give it a try. We normally stop at Taqueria Odelay just down the street. Which is very good. But wanted to branch out while passing through a route we frequent The bar had many patrons and most tables we full when we arrived. But there were a few empty tables, so we chose one as it is seat yourself. It was just about 5:30pm. Instantly we noted the bussed dirty dishes and bar glasses piled at the end of the bar. And there was just one woman bar tending and waiting tables. They were clearly short staffed. After about 8 minutes, she approached with menus and asked for our drink order. We just ordered water, as we are not big drinkers. She returned with the glasses within a few minutes and we order 2 appetizers. We needed to decide on the rest of the order. I noted it was about 5:45. While the place seemed busy, there wasn't much food being served out of the kitchen. We saw a few plates wander out of the kitchen. But they were few and time between was far. We were offered more water at about 6:15 and told our order would be out "soon". Ok, it's been 30 minutes and that's just too long for 2 appetizers to be made. A few more plates wandered by but seriously, like 2 sandwiches and a plate of fries. Service was just very slow. At 6:30, we walked out, without being served food or any further explanation as to what was going on. We left a tip for the waitress and her efforts. But the kitchen staff needs to get their act together. And learn to make more than one order at a time. I don't normally walk out on a place or leave bad reviews. But have been in the industry a long time. How this place rates as it does on Yelp, I just don't know. Perhaps it's from some regulars that are served well. Like the table just behind us that received many visits from a second male bartender which showed up at about 6pm. They were served 2 rounds of drinks in 20 minutes. And had ordered food as well. We didn't stay long enough to know when theirs actually came out. But the way the server was schmoozing with them, seems they would have received their meals well before us. PS: we walked down the street to Local Burger, which has mediocre reviews on Yelp. The staff was super friendly and hustled about efficiently. Holy crap. I loved this place until tonight. I seriously was put over the edge on two martinis over a 3hr time period with food in the mix. Like an order of sliders and macaroni bites. I apparently was drinking straight gin in my pickle martini and didn't taste it due to the pickle juice. A friend of mine ordered a Manhattan and couldn't even drink it because it was just straight up alcohol. Whoever was bartending definitely has a heavy hand. read more

Stopped in for Sunday brunch... delicious all around. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and friends ordered breakfast burrito, steak and eggs and stuffed french toast with peaches and raspberry compote. Okay, I'm giving the 5 star rating to this bar because it exists in Keene, NH. Not LA, not Boston, not New York City. That being said, it's super clean, the bartenders are superior at mixing drinks, and they have great bar food. I hear that their brunch is pretty amazing, though I've never been. It does get a little pricey (this is Keene we're talking about, anything over $3 is pricey) but for the deliciousness of their drinks it's worth it. read more

The bartenders here cannot make a Manhattan to save their lives. Twice I went and ordered the simple drink and was rewarded with a sugary slur that tasted like sin. my blind grandmother could mix a Manhattan better. Overall, this place seems to believe that the only good martini is loaded with sugar or syrup or dyed pink or blue or whatever the think it takes to trick people into ordering it. I ordered a Shed Mountain Ale after looking at a short but decent beer selection. No complaints here. I tried the fried artichoke hearts and the chicken Gorgonzola wrap. Both were delicious. I was impressed with the quantity of Gorgonzola and chicken in the wrap, they didn't skimp! It came with a HUGE pile of fries. The fries were well seasoned but were a little soggy for my liking. I'll order them well done next time. The fried artichoke hearts were something different and quite enjoyable. I especially like the dipping sauce (not too overpowering, a fine compliment) as well as the small bed of greens on which the hearts sat. read more

There are two experiences to 21 bar and grill. If your in the mood for a beer and a burger on a sunny patio tucked away from the hustle and bustle of main street, this place will be perfect for lunch. Later in the night, 21 is a good choice if you want to grab a martini or other nice mix drink while dodging the more chaotic and crowded bars in Keene. I know there is more to the menu than just burgers, but they are so delicious I never think to try anything else. The patio in back is nice on a sunny day, and feels like a well kept secret, but it is small and only has 2 or 3 tables. read more

We went here for dinner even after reading all the reviews about the service. We sat at the bar. Service was ok, not much bartender chat that you often get in other places but that may be because it is kind of loud. I was surprised to find this place in the small town of Keene. I actually felt transported while here to a larger city. There are hundreds of martinis here, with prices on par with NYC's. However, they are filled with high quality liquor. Specials are available sometimes. For food we just had the fried artichoke app, which was really wonderful. It's small but can provide a great night. Be wary that it can get packed and seating can be a pain in that thing you sit on. It's hit or miss with the bartender. If you are looking for a more mature setting (or if you are just sick of Cobble/Lab), this is the obvious third or first choice (depending on your decision making). read more

Went back today for lunch with my wife. We had a great meal and a few cocktails. I had a bloody Maria which was nicely prepared. She had Mac n Cheese Bites and a burger which she loved. The Mac and Cheese Bites were very good and came with a cheese dipping sauce. I had beef and lamb sliders done in a Greek style and they were superb. Also had a Gorgonzola Green Salad with chicken that was very good. Bartender did a great job taking care of the lunch crowd and she was very personable. read more

This place is amazing! They have great beers and make delicious martinis. During the fall semester I ordered a shipyard pumpkinhead with cinnamon sugar around the rim. Very very delicious! Delicious drinks, and really good food! However, it is kinda pricey...well worth it though if you want a quieter 21st birthday party, ability to actually hear a visiting friend over noise and still grab food and a drink, or if you want a less raucous but still exciting bachelorette party! I have gone here solo before too, the food is worth it. This place looked promising. And the menu was impressive for a Saturday afternoon - with breakfast being served in addition to lunch. We ordered our meals and a round of drinks and when they first arrived, the food looked like it was going to be good. I had opted for the French Dip Panini with another at my table, and the third of our group went with Burger Buddies and Chicken Tenders. The burger buddies were described as "good" - but seemed sparse with no condiments or cheese. They were served with a pickle and tomato slice which helped to ease their dryness but seemed to lack any sort of "come eat me!" enticement. The chicken tenders faired only slightly better in the taste department. (one star down). And then there was the French Dip. Upon first bite, I knew I was in for it. The "carmelized" onions that were promised were steamed at best - lacking everything that would make them more than simply, quick cooked - no sweetness, no caramel color - really, nothing carmelized at all. And the meat which may have had a good flavor, was masked by a mouth drying saltiness that could not be quenched regardless of how many beers were ordered. The au-jus that came with the sandwich was completely inedible due to the same extreme saltiness. It was more of a brine than a dipping juice - although if it was the same one the meat came from, it would stand to reason it was of the same sodium level, that of the sea. (another star gone). Our waitress was blasé at best. There was no "how is everything". And after our meals, she returned with a second round of beers, which only two of the three in our party wanted - yet we all received and were charged for - a testament to her lack of f-cks given (drop another star). And then there was the coup de grace. As she was clearing the table, a knife covered in mayonnaise fell off the plate, a simple accident, could have happened to anyone. However, there was no "oh sorry". And, when it fell, it sprayed mayonnaise all over my husband's Patagonia jacket. When I went to the bar to let her know what had happened, and ask for a rag/something to assist with the stain, her response was "oh". Again, no "sorry". No, "let me help you", or even a "hey jerk, not my issue". Nothing. All in all, spending close to $60 for a subpar lunch and a stained jacket, only to receive shade from a mediocre waitress seemed unacceptable. With so many other restaurants in Keene, I'd save this one for last. Oh, and make sure you have enough money for dry cleaning factored into your meal budget. read more

Almost walked out after sitting for quite a while at the bar waiting for service. I will excuse a place that is under staffed, but that was not the case here. Walked in, the place was probably less than half full, and there were 4 people behind the bar. Two other people sitting at the bar. Another couple sat at the bar, order taken immediately, beers in front of them right away. Another person came in alone, ordered a drink, got it. Us? Nothing. We also notice that the bar is about at our chest. Mind, you, I'm not short, 6'4". I felt like I was at a kids table sitting at this bar. About to walk again, and just in time, our order was taken. Okay, we'll give it a try still, this is normally our kind of place. Couple of outta towners looking for a nice brunch, but that worked against us, from what we could tell, you needed to know someone to get service. Things looked up when the bloody mary's arrived and were good and spicy. Downhill again from here. Overcooked egg benedict, cheap ass silverware that just bent trying to cut into these things. Not to mention, I basically have my elbow over my shoulders trying to eat this thing. Did any one come by and ask how things were? Nope, not once. To the owners here, that is not asking a lot, pretty much standard practice in the restaurant business. Managed to get through the meal as fast as we could to get out of this place. What an unpleasant experience. To be fair, poaching an egg is hard. If you can't do it though, don't pretend you can, take it off the menu. Also, if you only serve locals, put a sign out front saying "locals only." Save the rest of us the pain. I'll forgive the high bar and cheap silverware, probably just mistakes. read more
