Dined at the restaurant on 8/12/12. Outside dining near dockside. My entree was one of their specialty dishes, the Grilled Tuna with a Chili Glaze, and Noodles. I like sushi, so I asked for the tuna to be rare. The entire dish was fantastic. The tuna was lightly seared, the glaze was great. The wasabi paste was a bit spicier than I would have expected, so go easy there. But the dish was 10 out of 10! read more

Wow, not sure I have ever paid more for a meal I couldn't eat. The staff certainly didn't care a bit that the meal was untouched by most of our table. We started with the lobster soup, which was brown and thick like gravy. Had a very strange after taste as well as a gross texture. Main meal was ok, but certainly not work the spend. None of us could touch our deserts. Please if you go, don't pass on the bread. I will at least fill you up a little. Salad was also full of sand. read more

Went for lunch. Excellent kale salad! Friends loved their lobster roll and scallops. Very accommodating for gluten free.

The service and the view were great. What started out like the perfect dinner night turned out to be a bit hairy!. There was HAIR in one of the appetizers I ordered!! The manager as very apologetic and she did not charge for the appetizer and the wine. However, both my friend and I had a very bad reaction to the same appetizer. Without a doubt my favorite restaurant around. It is not a place for a cheap night out (although the Steak Fritte's night is a pretty good deal), but if you're looking for a high-end steakhouse you've found it. The food is top of the line - been there close to two-dozen times and haven't been disappointed yet. Wait staff is exceptional, restaurant decor is upscale and refined, and the wine list is extensive. You won't get a better steak in Newport, for sure....but the seafood and other options on the menu are equally fantastic. Amazing Valentine's Day dinner! We had delicious Mac and cheese for an appetizer, the steaks were cooked to perfection, and the sides were awesome. We split brussel sprouts and the fried sliced potatoes. For dessert we tried the chocolate chip cookie dough torte which was unbelievable. After a beautiful day in Newport, my husband and I decided to get dinner at 22 Bowens because we had heard great things about their food and service. We made a reservation for 6:30pm on a Sunday. When we got to the restaurant, we were promptly seated upstairs near a window which we thought was great...until the sun started to set and we could no longer see anything because of the glare. Our waitress Elizabeth lowered the blinds, but did not close them entirely. She took our drink orders and left. It took about 15 min to get our drinks and we ordered our appetizers, Tuna Tartare and Lobster & Corn Fritters, when she returned. Bread was brought, and appetizers appeared about 20 min later, and at that point we ordered our entrees...Georges Bank Scallops for me and Seafood Pappardelle for my husband. Appetizers were delicious and we were exited about or dinners. The food came and looked and smelled great. One bite into my scallops, and all of that changed. There was a lot of grit in just one small bite, so I had another from a different one and the same thing happened. It took our waitress about 15 min to come and see how everything was. When I mentioned the grit in the scallops, she took the plate and asked if I would like something else instead. I told her i would like the Seafood Pappardelle and she said she would bring me a plate and new silverware. When she returned, she had a small appetizer plate and new silverware, which was place in front of me and she left. Even though I had requested my OWN order of Seafood Pappardelle she assumed I was going to share my husbands dinner. Another 20 min passed before she came back over to our table and ordered another drink and asked for a menu. By time his drink came, Elizabeth informed me that the grit was from the vegetables, not the scallops and offered us desert and asked what I would like to order for food. I informed her that I thought I had ordered my own Seafood Pappardelle and would not be ordering anything now that my husband was finished with his plate, and I was interested in eating WITH him, not after he was finished, then we asked for the check. She was very shocked and did not say another word to us, just walked away. She immediately came back with the check and took our card to charge, again without saying anything. She is one of the WORST waitresses that i have ever had and because of her service, we will never be returning to this restaurant. If you do go to 22 Bowens and see that you have Elizabeth for a waitress, I would suggest requesting to move from her section or a new server. read more

I love 22 Bowens, best steak in town! I always order Beef Carpaccio, and the NY Strip. Try the Bordelaise sauce on the steak as its great.

I had a late lunch there on 3.5.16 with my wife. We had a great experience. The setting is very nice - fine dining by the water. The server was very attentive but not in the way. I had a half dozen oysters as an appetizer and they were as good as I've had anywhere. My wife's Rueben was huge with thick cuts of beef. My fish and chips was quite good as well. The batter on the fish was a true beer batter - thick and crunchy. We were very pleased and it was worth the price, which was still pretty reasonable for lunch. We'll certainly return. read more

We ordered the cheese board and French onion soup ... Which were both so delicious. We ordered the aged steak, it was good just not impressed. The creme brulee was ok but The dulce de leche cheesecake was OMG!! It was so good. It would benefit to have that guava sauce poured allover the dessert tho. I just love guava tho I had to ask for more lol. Manny our waiter was spectacular he made the whole experience much more pleasurable. He was so funny. He made me feel so comfortable. We travel to Newport every summer for 3-4 days prior to out trip to a lake in N.Hampshire. One of the first things my husband does, is make a dinner reservation at Bowen's. We have been coming to this restaurant for years, and have never had a bad meal. We love the Stoli Doli's, the steaks, seafood and atmosphere. We eat and drink very well, and tip very well. This year, we were treated to something very different. We all had several drinks with our dinners, and perhaps our waiter assumed we would not notice, as my husband gave him our credit card without glancing at the bill. However, when he returned, we did look, and he had added over $100 in extra charges. He charged us twice for a $50 seafood appetiser, added two extra drinks, a soup, and something else we could not even identify. When we told him it was incorrect, he offered a lame excuse and took it back. We were flabbergasted. Then, to make matters worse, a young woman came by to inquire after our meal. When we told her of the extra charges, she told us she was glad "they had fixed it"! They fixed nothing! If we had not checked our bill, they would have essentially stolen over $100. Although we have long loved this restaurant, this experience definitely left a bad taste in our mouths. I do not know if we will return. read more

Was looking forward to eating at this top-rated Newport eatery but was quite disappointed, first by steamed mussels which were not piping hot when presented. Wish I would have sent them back but thought maybe it was just a couple at the top but must have been sitting in kitchen not prepared for our order. If that was not enough of a disappointment my wife's salmon was dry and overcooked. Management was apologetic and offered free desert but this only included creme brûlée not even coffee. Fine dining? Some great food and service at times and others it can be crazy and a waste of money. Wine is always good and decent prices, the staff is friendly but sometimes the food can take an hour and come out over cooked. The upside is it is a great location and if there is a mistake they usually try to make everything better. read more

Had a delicious impromptu dinner at 22 Bowens last night. Although the restaurant was fully booked, the hostess showed us to a booth in the bar section immediately. Our server, Sean, was extremely knowledgable and friendly. He offered great advice on drinks and entrees. My boyfriend had a Sam Adams IPA style beer and started with the french onion soup. I had to try a bite of the soup and it was as good as any french onion soup I've ever had. A really rich, warm broth that was neither overly salted or oniony. I ordered the 8 ounce filet with porcini and shallot butter. I also ordered a side of risotto and even though it's not one of their traditional side dishes, the chef was very generous in preparing it for me. Upon recommendation from the waiter, my boyfriend ordered the special 12 ounce Waguy beef steak. Both steaks were cooked impeccably well. I prefer mine prepared medium, so the Waguy cooked to medium rare was a bit too pink for me, but had robust flavor. We were too stuffed for dessert, but overall it was a great meal and we've already discussed going back. read more

The atmosphere is good with inside and outside dining, with white tablecloths and candles. We ordered Caesar salads to start; 40 min later, still no salads. When we questioned that, the waitress said, "sorry, we have a private party upstairs so your ticket got lost". When the salads finally came, we said to the waitress to make sure the entrees come out with appropriate timing so we're not rushed, but they came out too quickly, as evidenced by the fact that our side order of brussels sprouts was barely cooked. It seems as though, once they realized that our order had slipped through the cracks, they did a rush job to try to catch up. The swordfish main dish was tasteless, not hot and overcooked, so it had obviously been sitting out for a while before it was served. We told the waitress about the brussels sprouts, so a manager brought another order of them, but he did so after we had finished eating. From the time we questioned the delay in bringing the salads, we were given a cold shoulder; in fact, as soon as we finished eating our main courses, the waitress simply walked over with the check and left it on the table, without asking if we wanted coffee or desserts. It was nothing short of rude. I asked why we weren't asked if we wanted coffee or dessert, and the waitress said "I thought you said you didn't want anything else", which was not the case at all. This is a typical tourist restaurant on the wharf with decent atmosphere, poor service and hit-or-miss food. read more

My family and I went here during Newport's restaurant week hoping for a nice lunch. The atmosphere was pleasant but everyone in family felt let down by the experience. To start we ordered our apps entrees and desserts along with the clam and mussel bucket for the table. We waited a half hour for the apps to arrive and when they came they were not what we ordered. The mushroom crustada was cold the chowder was delicious but unfortunately lukewarm.. Thankfully the corn and shrimp fitters had a healthy portion, so we could share. But the worst was yet to come.. The clams in our mixed shellfish bucket smelled like low tide enough that it ruined our appetite for the rest of the meal. At this point we wanted out but still had to wait for our entrees and desert and although portions were generous the flavor lacked. Dessert was the only saving grace, and to be honest getting the bill was everyone's favorite part of the meal.. Sorry guys but there is a lot of work to be done in proper execution of restaurant week.. Better luck next fall.. read more

I met up with friends for lunch one Saturday in mid-September and they highly recommended 22B. We arrived at 11:30AM as soon as they were opening. We were seated outside and our drink orders were taken immediately. A short time later the waiter took our food order. And then we waited.... and waited.... was the chef late for work? We had 2 children in our group. They had both ordered pasta and that came out first. (Thank God!) The waiter, who was very friendly, continued to strike up a conversation with us every few minutes or so. By now, the restaurant was filling up. After a little more small talk with the waiter, he finally brought out our food. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad without anchovies. There were no anchovies in sight, however I could taste them. I don't know if the dressing has some kind of anchovy base, or if they made it to the plate, but someone caught the error before it came to the table? In any event, it wasn't the best CC salad I've ever had. My husband had a burger, which he said was fine. Our main complaint was just the amount of time the whole lunch took. By the time we left, the place was full of patrons! My parking had expired, but thankfully no ticket. I didn't see what all the fuss was about with this place. read more

Been to this restaurant several times. But last night was over the top and WHY? Because of Amy the bartender. I can't even begin to describe her energy. From the second we walked up the stairs to the second we left our experience was something we have never gotten before. She truly makes this place. Literally after five minutes we thought she was our friend that we have known all our lives. The food is decent it's not over-the-top and it's not bad by no means. My steak was not cooked to my liking. I asked for medium well more to the well and it did come out red and when Amy took one look at it you would've thought she was in your corner. Brought somebody have them take my dish re-cook it and must've apologized I half a dozen times. Unfortunately when they recooked it it's still was not cooked properly and it still was very red. But honestly it didn't matter I don't care that I didn't get my steak all I was sitting there thinking is what an experience I had tonight with Amy. Goes out above for everybody and runs a tight ship there. If you are in Newport on the weekends you have to go upstairs and experience Amy. Love love her. Amy you are one in a million. read more

A wonderful restaurant experience from beginning to end. Comfortable, clean, and scenic outdoor seating was perfect on a mid summer evening. The menu was excellently and thoughtfully crafted, offering seasonal and trendy, yet recognizable food. The appetizer of burrata, tomato and English peas was exceptional, the cheese was mild, sweet and nutty sitting over a perfectly tangy lemon aioli. The Atlantic salmon entree was paired with a cucumber dill yogurt sauce and tiny, glazed yellow beets, it was lovely. And the pan roasted chicken with English peas, and carrot purée demonstrated fabulous cooking technique, although a little heavy for summertime. As if the food was not enough, our server, Rocco, was well versed in the entire menu; he was able to suggest detailed food and wine selections, paid appropriate attention to guests, and consistently complimented the chef's dedication to the menu. Throughout the meal, the manager could be observed overseeing service, and checking in with every guest to ensure a great experience. I absolutely recommend this restaurant and wish we had gone back a second time! read more

Things did not start off well when we were escorted upstairs next to a table with 2 families with children. I was hoping for a romantic evening and that was not going to happen in this setting of kids. Our server tried to be attentive, but she had to keep much of her attention on this large group. First I order a cocktail off of their menu. It was a cherry mojito. When it arrived it tasted like a Shirley Temple on acid. The server saw my face and advised the bartender was new and had another one make it for me. The next one was much better and the drink looked totally different. Our entrees came about 90 minutes from the time we were seated. The runner advised not to touch the hot skewers. Once I felt the meat, I touch the skewers and they were both cold!!!! To top things off everything on the skewers were charred. The server apologized and went to get a manager, but she did not come immediately. She offered to make a new dish, but then my husband and I would be eating alone. I did not want to wait for a new dish. The manager could not explain the delay. She did not seem to care that our night was ruined and did not try to make up for the mess. This dinner was a disaster!!! I was going to go to The Mooring the next day, but when I saw it was the same owner I went somewhere else! read more

My husband and I went to 22 Bowen's in mid-August and had an excellent experience. Great food and service. We had a very different second experience on September 21. After we ordered our food, we barely saw our server. Our water glasses were empty most of the meal. My husband ordered a steak, but wasn't given a steak knife. The server didn't come back to check on us until almost the end of the meal. When the server finally brought the knife, he didn't apologize or ask how our food was. We had a Dinner Club card and did not realize it wasn't valid at this restaurant until Oct 1. The manager explained this to us and after I conceded I was wrong about the dates, he abruptly left. No "thank you for coming" or "please come again" or even "have a nice evening." I have worked in high-end restaurants and know what kind of service a restaurant of this calibur should provide. It was sorely lacking. The food is excellent, but based on the service, we will not be coming back. read more

We came to 22 Bowens at the suggestion of our concierge and it was one of the best restaurant meals we had while in Newport. Atmosphere was elegant, with a smart casual steakhouse feel, and food was excellent. For starters, I had the lettuce wedge salad which was huge and well done, and my husband had the oyster special which was divine. For entrees, we both had the steak (I off the entree list and my husband from the a la carte grill menu) and the cut of meat was delectable and melt-in-your-mouth good. The sides were also tasty, though no match for the meat. We then had ice cream for dessert. It is worth noting that we arrived with a sleeping toddler who awoke about 40 minutes into our meal. The restaurant had a good kids' menu and the chicken fingers were huge and all white meat, something I felt good about feeding to my child. As well, as we were there early, we didn't feel awkward to have a toddler there and the restaurant staff was very accommodating and super friendly to him too. So it was an enjoyable and delicious meal all around, for two parents who needed the night out and for whom dining out with junior can sometimes feel like a contact sport. Overall, I highly recommend 22B and would definitely return on my next visit. read more

To start the food and waitress were amazing. However upon arrival we had 1 more person than our reservation was for (which we were aware could cause some extra wait time). The hostess could not have been more rude and unprofessional. Acting as though we had showed up with a party of 8 instead of 4. While at first trying to completely turn us away after persistence she said she could see what she could do. A quicker turn around than expected came with us practically being scolded in the bar area- in front of lots of other guests she announced that it was "extremely inconvenient for her but our table was ready". Now have had worked in similar settings before I was so taken back and offended that she would say this to us, especially seeing that this restaurant is suppose to be more "upscale". I surely hope that she will receive some extra training when it comes to speaking with her guests going forward as i know my entire party felt very uncomfortable going into our meal. Don't have much desire to go back again. read more

This was our second visit to Bowens, and while we had a wonderful experience a year ago, this visit left us feeling like we just spent over 200 dollars for a very mediocre meal. This in no way reflects on the server, we got the cold seafood sampler, and the oysters were nothing to rave about but it was passable. Entrees were cold! Delmonico steak, baked potato, and creamed spinach were cold. Cheese on cream spinach was not even melted. We sent it all back and it came back again still cold! Upon receiving the bill... The house wine was 18.00 dollars a glass! Not a spectacular glass of wine that knocked my socks off... But a normal Cabernet that should not have cost that much. While they were apologetic I would have expected them to cook the food correctly the second time or at the very least offer us a dessert or a drink on the house to make it right. Next time we come to Newport we will try something else! read more
