This review is long overdue- dined here in June for breakfast. My go to breakfast is eggs with pico, cheese and avocado with bacon. But this time I opted to try something different... and I must say I'm so glad I did!!! I ordered the chicken and waffles. First I have to preface this by saying there are only two people I know that can make good fried chicken- my next door neighbor from my childhood and my great aunt. I've had fried chicken in CA, TN, TX ,NV, LA, NC, DC, MD and VA and 9/10 times the chicken is either too greasy, too salty, poorly seasoned, way too crispy, and or it doesn't taste fresh. As a result of this experience I stopped ordering/eating fried chicken over 10 years ago. But this CHICKEN RIGHT here (old man voice)....was surprisingly good. It was amazing- it was fresh, perfectly seasoned, not too soft and not too crispy. This S*** was soooooooo good I ordered a second entree to go. I'm embarrassed to admit I ate the 2nd meal two hours later- just being greedy. I probably sent half my relatives and closest friends a text about how I ate fried chicken AND it was the bomb!!!! If you're too lazy to cook or go out, or thinking your almonds and kale chips will get you through the day while you're dieting, you'll end up here at 10pm on a weeknight. If you're out with friends on a Saturday night after skipping dinner and thinking liquid calories will sustain you only to be starved and find yourself in the company of people who actually eat, you may end up here too. If it's your first holiday away from home, you also may end up here. It's one of the best diner options in Austin. Edit: First three times were awesome, last time was horrible. Just try to avoid peak time (aka 1am) for a super ridiculously long wait for disappointing inedible, over cooked fried chicken sandwich and powder cheese mac. Don't order that. Don't go so late. And tell the manager to fire the hostess if she puts her hand in your face to tell you to wait before you even say anything. read more

PREFACE: I am extremely picky about the greasy foods I eat. If it's going to be greasy, it has to taste really, really good and preferably combine a variety of amazing flavors (in addition to fattiness). This is why I do not like Roscoe's and often find myself disappointed by the chicken and waffles that many joints serve. BUT NOT HERE! It may have been because it was midnight and my friends and I were starving, but 24 Diner definitely gave me one of my best "chicken and waffle experiences" to date (yes, I call it an experience). ------------- During dinner earlier that day, a couple UT kids had mentioned this place to us and recommended their chicken and waffles. When midnight came around, our stomachs were grumbling and we set out to find this diner for a snack. The parking lot is pretty small and diner is not huge either; we took the last open table when we came it. The interior is clean and surprisingly nice for a 24-hour diner. We ordered a strawberry shake and chicken and waffles to share. Service was a bit slow, but all was forgiven when our order arrived. (Again, maybe it was the midnight madness taking over) Our strawberry shake was amazing. The perfect balance of sweet but not-too-sweet. We pretty much inhaled the whole thing. BUT THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES. It is rare that both the chicken AND the waffle are so well-executed. The chicken was piping hot and fresh and the waffle was warm and fluffy (not soggy, thank goodness). They paired together wonderfully, especially with honey and hot sauce. Ever since then, my friends and I compare all of our "chicken and waffle experiences" to this one ("Is it "24 Diner" good, or just normal good?"). Generally, the only one that compares is Waffle Bus in Houston, because their ancho chili honey adds a dimension to their sandwich (simple honey and hot sauce cannot compare). Not what I expected from the reviews. We ordered burgers and fries and a beer. The Austin ale was fantastic! Burger was over done and dry. They seemed freezer burned, thawed them cooked. This was my 2nd trip to 24 Diner, I was eager to return and my experience exceeded my expectations. The Food: On my first trip I had the chicken and waffles, a specialty of the house and for good reason. The chicken was fried to perfection -- juicy, succulent meat surrounded by tasty southern fried chicken breading. Pairing fried chicken with waffles, while initially sounding odd to me, was an outstanding combination and the addition of the maple syrup was a trifecta. What a truly delicious and decadent meal. Most recently, (2/21/2014) I returned to 24 Diner for my follow up meal. My co-worker and I stopped in for a late breakfast before departing Austin. She had a truly delicious eggs benedict with braised bacon. The server did not even balk at her special request to poach the eggs a little longer than normal and the resulting dish was exactly to her order. Eggs benedict, when cooked properly, is a wonderful dish but with the addition of the braised bacon the dish went from delicious to spectacular. The braised bacon was thick cut and tender. I was not familiar with "braised bacon" but it definitely took yummy bacon deliciousness to "a whole 'nother level". I enjoyed scrambled eggs, 24 Diner's housemade sausage and, oddly, a chocolate cherry milkshake. So, the eggs were good but the housemade sausage was outstanding! It was the right amount of spicy -- a little kick but not so much so that I needed to chase it with water. :) The sausage is ground and made in house daily. The freshness is evident and it was definitely a treat for my taste buds. My milkshake was good, very thick but I didn't care for the cherry chunks that I was sucking up in my straw; it's a texture thing. Anyway, I see that as my own failing to clarify expectations rather than the Diner failing short on quality. The milkshake was chocolately thick, and made with real ice cream. I will definitely order another one on my next trip. AMBIANCE: While the word "diner" is part of it's name that was not really how this place felt to me. It was open, airy, clean and friendly. When I think of diner I think of "Alice", outdated vinyl furnishings in tacky colors and an edginess --- there was none of that here. We were greeted with a smile at the door by an appropriately friendly hostess, the kind of hostess who truly makes you feel welcomed rather than an interruption to her day. She immediately showed us to a comfortable table. While the diner is not humongous there is a decent sized dining area that includes both high tables, booths and seating at a bar. The restaurant is well lit and fashionable appointed -- no tacky colored vinyl here. It felt comfortable, home-like and welcoming. SERVICE: Our server, Zoe, was friendly and attentive. She took the time to explain some of the menu items to us and answered our questions about the menu items. She helped us narrow our selections and guided us in choices she felt that we would most enjoy. She was quick with the coffee checked in with us to make sure our meals were too our liking and even remembered to double check on our special requests. I told her how much I appreciated her serving skills before we left the Diner. So, overall, am a fan of the 24 Diner and I think I will make this a regular stop on my Austin trips. The waffle is out of the world and blows my mind every time. If you're debating on whether to get it, pull a Nike and just do it. No regrets, I pinky promise. My fingers/toes aren't crossed either. My friends and I were visiting Austin for the weekend, and wanted a tasty, local, and delicious brunch. We waited a few minutes for a table, but ordered some mimosas and a bloody mary at the bar, and then were seated after 10 minutes of waiting. A lot of the ingredients (if not all) are made locally or regionally, and I am always so happy to support that. The environment is definitely industrial, and very clean. They had some outdoor seating with some heat lamps, but it was pretty cold so we opted to dine indoors. My bloody mary with local vegetables was definitely one of the highlights. I loved the celery salt around the rim with the pickled pepper, green bean, and carrot on a stick. I ordered a small portion (half) of the chicken and waffles along with two medium eggs, and it was so filling! I definitely recommend either sharing the full portion of chicken and waffles, or just getting half. You will definitely be satisfied. The batter of the chicken is light and crunchy. This was one of my favorite spots back in college. I'm glad it's still alive and thriving! I went a few weeks ago with my fiancé -- it was his first time. I ordered the chicken biscuit & he ordered the meatloaf sandwich. The meat loaf sandwich was definitely the star of the show. He said he had never had a better sandwich. The fries were also hand cut & delicious. I ordered an iced chai tea latte and he had coffee. Both excellent! I've been coming for years and will highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Visited here on our Austin vacation by recommendation of an Austin native. If I could use two words they would be "eclectic" and fantastically "original". They take good wholesome organic food and somehow make it better. They even list their growers on the chalkboards over the kitchen. Be ready to wait if you come at breakfast or lunch ( I've heard them up to an hour). The food is delicious and the service is good. Everyone takes their time so don't expect to be in and out fairly quick. But if you truly enjoy the flavor of food and want to enjoy yourself you won't rush anyway. We had the 24 hash and the fried chicken biscuit for breakfast with coffee and a Bloody Mary ( due to all the photos recommending it). The coffee was excellent ( speaking from someone who only takes it black). I didn't care for the Bloody Mary due to consistency ( it was chunky rather than smooth) and it wasn't as spicy as I would prefer ( my fave is mothers in New Orleans.) The fried chicken biscuit was delicious but the biscuit was over cooked which caused it to be more crumbly. No fear the butter and honey saved the show by providing the moisture lacking in the biscuit. The hAsh... Oh goodness the hash. It was perfect. The potatoes were well done and the proportion of ingredients were spot on. The green onions were the perfect finish. Dessert: milkshakes. The most original fresh milkshake I have ever had. The chocolate was subtle. The banana brown sugar was smooth and light in flavor. Subtlety delicious in every way and fresh. The Kentucky bourbon pie was very rich which was countered off by the ice cream we added. The chocolate overpowered any real flavor of the pie, but for most this won't be an issue. The ice cream was phenomenal. My recommendation would be to skip the pie and just get ice cream. read more

It's my first time here, and I'd come back. The waitress recommended the shrimp and grits. It wasn't what I expected in that there was a lot of liquid. It was really good, but spicier than I was ready for. The salad my friends got were big, and looked good. My other friend got the meatloaf, also at our waitress' suggestion and she really enjoyed it. Don't know what happened to this place but we just had the worst breakfast experience ever at this restaurant. It has always been one of my favorite breakfast brunch places until today. The food was completely different than in the past. The only bright side was the fried chicken biscuit sandwich. It was great. The sunny side up eggs on the breakfast plate were cooked until the yolk was hard and they were served cold alongside some mediocre(again cold)fried potatoes and a very dry biscuit. The bacon was good. The frittata was simply ok but again very dry. We asked twice for enough silverware and eventually had to go get it ourselves. Never got a water refill even though we were outside baking in the Texas heat. For the absolute worst part: the chicken and waffle plate was inedible. It was so dry and chewy with zero flavor that nothing could save it and no one out of 5 at our table could eat it. And the fried chicken served on top was the driest most tasteless chicken I've ever tried. Again no one could eat it. There is no way any of this food was freshly made to order. Everything tasted old,dry, and stale except for the bacon and the fried chicken biscuit sandwich. Today was a great day at 24 diner. We had good food and good service. As my dining companion mentioned to me, it is a great place with a mixture of classic diner food with Austin healthy food. Tip: try the veggie sausage even if you aren't vegetarian. So tasty! My meat loving companion really like it (just don't expect it to taste like meat!!!). I got the waffle breakfast with the veggie sausage of course, and it was great. The butter they put on top of the waffles basically made syrup superfluous. I don't think I can stress getting the vegetarian sausage enough. It's just so good. Just get it. Get it!! Think of them as like really good hash browns (but made from beets) if you can't get over the meatless "sausage". Update: Ate at 24 diner again. Had the Betty (or was it Betsy?) veggie burger. Absolutely delicious. Well, actually my omnivore boyfriend ordered it. Yes, he loves meat, so I just want you to know how good this veggie burger is. It is by far the best one I've had in Austin. I had the vegan hash just to branch out on a limb. It was good, I ordered it because I wanted something with a bit more veggies in it. The prices are high, the service is great, the place is clean, and I like the decor. I think the food was pretty good and expensive. Apparently this place is known for being open late however the limited options doesn't make it an ideal place to go sober. After waiting over 30 minutes for our starter we finally received it; when we were done and stacked our plates our server came to bring us our bill. I had to remind her that we were still waiting on our entrees. Once we finally got our food it was missing the veggies on one burger, the aioli on another burger, and dressing on our side salad. We ended up just eating what we had because our server never showed back up for us to ask for the missing items. Wish the syrup they served was actually real maple syrup instead of the imitation sugary stuff. The waffle wasn't as crunchy as I'd like either. The saving grace was by far the milkshake. I just moved to Austin from NYC a few weeks ago. NY has a huge Diner culture, with 24hr diners on practically every other street, so I'm spoiled. I love diner food! HOWEVER, this place is unlike any other diner I've been to before. Based on the prices alone, this business is getting away with robbery. I had a $35 check for a grilled cheese and a tuna sandwich. The Tuna was unevenly cooked, with a grayish tint on the inside, and an unforgivable odor that traveled from my side of the table, to my poor friends' nostrils sitting opposite of me. The "grilled" cheese was microwaved (stale) bread, with an unfortunate tomato stuffed between two freshly opened slices of Kraft (more likely HEB brand) cheese that WASN'T EVEN MELTED. To top it all off, they took the liberty of providing me with grilled vegetables as a side... These vegetables were microwaved and had a chemically flavor that neither my friend nor I could correctly identify. PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE READING A REVIEW FROM A LOCAL! I came to visit a friend for spring break and he'd been telling me about 24 Diner and how much he loves it. So for my last night here we decided to swing by. I'm so glad we did! The food was amazing, Mike was extremely attentive and talkative, we loved chatting with him all night. It took us a little too long to finish our food be because of the conversation. He didn't miss a beat. I was surprised to see the Manager out on the floor so much, the managers at most restaurants back in Houston are never around. She got us a seat and checked in on us a couple times. Megan and Mike made the night, even if the food wasn't as my friend had talked up, I would be a returning customer because of them! I had the best salad I have ever had. The charred bitters. I've had dreams about this salad. And it's a salad!!!! I appreciated that it wasn't just the classic run of the mill restaurant salad made of romaine with different toppings on it. There was charred radicchio, these delicious mushrooms, walnuts (maybe pecans?) it was so delicious and all on arugula NOT romaine. I am haunted by this salad. Oh and my friends got good food too :) The ambiance was good. They have those super tall table booth things which I don't understand but I don't have any real feelings about. The staff was very nice and super fast which was appreciated. They all dress at very different levels of fancy-ness which is really fun to look at honestly.
