On another note, we originally sat outside bc it was a beautiful Texas fall day, but our Sunday brunch was soon terrorized by a swarm of honey bees. Everything was delicious! I liked that the veggie sausage was different from what you would usually get - I think this one had beetroot in it. But the waffles weren't as warm as I'd hoped. Our hostess was fine but my date was one of those weird trippy people who can never just answer a simple question, like, Table for two? and just riffed and riffed (I couldn't even understand here) and the hostess did a great job just smiling, seating us and edging away ever so carefully. She gave me a "good luck" look as she walked away! Back to the food: good menu, expansive without being overwhelming, a good breakfast selection and salads, burgers and sandwiches along with a few choice entrees. Bevvies including a few of your favorite brews available although I opted for water since the half a drink my date had consumed earlier was obviously working its magic on her. Service is fast and friendly. We split a sandwich and 24 was smart enough to come out with two plates - some places simply expect you to share everything! The meatloaf sandwich was delicious - comforting food of ample size with delicious house-cut fries. It was plenty of food for two and our server checked with us twice to see if we needed anything else. Price was very reasonable. Remember, this place is right downtown at Sixth and Lamar, so if you're looking for a bite after having a few brews its supper convenient. This was my 2nd time here & I had the chicken & gravy again. It is to die for! The best I've ever had! It's a relaxed, casual restaurant with laid back, friendly staff. We went about 1 pm on Sunday & didn't have to wait for a table even though they were pretty busy. Last time we came earlier & did wait a while, so this was a nice surprise. My one regret for my most recent visit was that I was too full to have one of their delicious, magical milk shakes. The roasted banana is the bomb-digitty. Get the deviled eggs - they're great and the perfect appetizer. The greens on the plate are good too. The corn fitters were ok, but I could pass on them probably. I ordered the honey chicken biscuit with fruit. The biscuit was light and fluffy and the chicken was perfectly fried and drizzled with honey .... mmmm.... I would order it again for sure! I read an online "The Infatuation" article that pretty well sums it up. 24 Diner is meant to be a hipper, more upscale version of an American classic. And they've found a constituency: college students, young Austin techies with money to burn and hipsters. And it's 24 hours, good for munchies after a night of partying in Austin's thriving club scene. I went in while vacationing in the Austin area from Hawaii (I know. Why?) That said, the article said the only thing worth ordering is the chicken and waffles. And the chicken and waffles did not disappoint. They were far better than any I've had in Hawaii (I had the full order) with both white and dark meat, boneless, some crispness on the skin and perfectly seasoned, although maybe a bit dry. There was a maple and/or brown sugar butter on the waffles that was also tasty. And real maple syrup. They also have both Cholula and Tabasco, and I love using both on my food--the former for that wonderful taste of Mexico, the latter for heat. Now, the less than ideal and reasons I didn't give it 5 stars. The coffee was OK, but I live in Hawaii and am spoiled coffee-wise. They were quite busy and I was at the end of the bar closest to the manager, expediter and food runner station. Somehow they didn't notice I didn't have silverware or a napkin (they use cloth, a nice touch). The manager also seemed puzzled when I asked for silverware. Thankfully, the nice young woman next to me ensconced in her laptop and latte handed me her black napkin with fork and butter knife inside. I generally felt ignored, perhaps because they were busy or perhaps because I'm about twice the age of almost everyone I saw there. They also seem to pride themselves as "farm to table," and had a board above the bar proclaiming, among other farm-fresh items, they have okra from some presumably local farm. I inquired if I could get a side order of fried okra. It is Texas, after all, sort of. I was told the okra was strictly pickled and used in drinks. Okra only as a bar garnish? Are you freakin' kidding me? How precious. There's a lost opportunity--or maybe fried okra, as delicious as it is, just isn't hip enough. The chicken and waffles, excellent as they were, were eclipsed the following morning as the best I've had at the unpretentious Monument Café in Georgetown, a place where Matthew McConaughey appeared with Guy Fieri on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." The Monument's version was simpler, humbler and perfect. Thin, crunchy waffle with soft interior, boneless chicken breast, way juicier with crispy skin and a hint of honey drizzle. I hate that I'm writing this review, but I just can't let this go. During the month of April, I came to 24 Diner one evening to enjoy some dinner with a friend of mine. After we waited 20 minutes for a glass of water and to place an order, a homeless man walked into the restaurant, bleeding profusely from his left arm. The hostess SAT this man at a table as he CONTINUED TO BLEED ALL OVER THE FLOOR AND TABLE! They did not ask this man to leave, step outside, or sit at one of the many tables and benches they have outside the restaurant. An employee came out with a small rag, and a class of water for the man, and TOOK HIS ORDER, all while the man is BLEEDING ALL OVER THE PLACE. This man received his food before my party, and continued to bleed all over the place. While this was happening, a small family of 6 walked in with 2 small children. The employee stopped what little work she was doing with the bleeding homeless man situation and accosted the family to put on masks in order to walk 5 feet to their table. Again, all while the homeless man was bleeding on the floors of the restaurant. Needless to say, my friend and I lost our appetite, the food was awful, and the service was rude and continued to ignore the blatant fact that the restaurant was covered in blood that was dripping from a homeless man. You can do better, you have done better, you must be better at protecting PAYING customers from situations like this. Absolutely unacceptable. read more

This made our list of places to eat while dining in Austin. My gf kept pushing for this place and on paper it does look great. When we arrived, we saw that this place is just as it states, a diner, more of a modern diner than that of ones of the past. Our server popped over and was SUPER friendly and very informative. We ordered a watermelon salad, the bacon avocado burger & the Betsy's burger. Shortly after our drinks came so did a salad. As soon as the salad was dropped off the runner left. We noticed that the salad had no watermelon. We weren't sure if the server put it in wrong or the runner delivered the wrong salad to the wrong table. We left it sitting there and continued our conversation. Our server stopped by and said 'that's not a watermelon salad'. He took it away and brought us back a watermelon salad. Our meals than came out shortly after. I had the Bacon Avocado - pain au lait bun, bacon, avocado, charred poblano, smoked aioli. Our server said that this was highlighted on the Food Network. I'm not sure why as the bun was VERY dry. There wasn't really any flavor to the burger. I was super bummed especially since I watch the Food Network for suggestions when visiting new cities. The burger did come w/ a boat load of fries. My gf had the Betsy's burger - housemade veggie patty: beets, mushrooms, lentils, rice, pumpkin seeds & golden flaxseeds. pain au lait bun, fontina, fresh poblano, red bell peppers, red onion, jalapenos, avocado, herb-lime vinaigrette. For a 24 hour diner this should not be considered a late hour, yet you'd have sworn we just walked in at 3 am. The food was ok. This place was all around great. It was hard to choose something from the menu because there were so many good choices. I ended up getting the Chicken Biscuit which was in all honesty the best breakfast food I've ever had. Every in my group thought their meal was delicious. What are they putting in the food? Our service was great and they complete your check quickly and right in front of you. They have a full bar as well, but the atmosphere is still nice and calm. Overall, definitely go here. It was by far the best chicken and waffles I have ever had, but I loooooovvvveeeee liege waffles. It seems like the people of Austin like to sleep in. They do the chili here with lots of pepper and vegetables, spiciness, and delicious meaty chuck roast and brisket. It was so hearty and filling that I could not even finish my bowl. The butter that came with the biscuit was also delicious, though the corn bread could have been a bit softer and flavorful. The chili is quite spicy, even by my standards, and I needed two cold cups of water to wash it down. Regardless, I wouldn't change a thing. Also, this "side dish" cost $15, which was a lot pricier than I expected, but I'd pay it over and over again if I had the opportunity. It is tradition that my husband and I go to 24 Diner on Christmas Eve and order the 24 Hash, which we affectionately call the "Who Hash". Since we were going to be out of town for Christmas we went a little early this year. There was a slight wait since is was a Saturday afternoon, but expected. We sat outside on the porch since we had our dogs with us. We love sitting on the porch because of the picnic style set up there is usually another family sitting at the table next to us. Every time we have made friends with the family next to us and converse throughout the meal. It happened this time, as well. There was a little girl who played with our dogs and we all just felt like one big family. The waiters at 24 Diner are always nice and responsive. Our waitress sat down and talked with us and the other family for a few minutes. We loved our time with her. When ordering the hash, you also get bread and your choice of jam. I was here for a late Sunday breakfast and had a 30-45 minute wait. Thankfully we really were seated within that time and notified via text. My group decided to go to Waterloo records and the Lush store around the corner for a bit of browsing while we waited. Being seated was great. The waitress had a great personality and asked about customizing our orders rather than serving the default as stated on the menu. I got the waffle sandwich with scrambled eggs. The staff was friendly and seemed to have a good knowledge of the menu... which made up for the fact that the server kept forgetting the small stuff that we ordered on the side or would get them wrong. Not a big deal though to me, since they were corrected. However, the reason I give this place 3 stars is because of the food... I got the 24 Hash and it looked really good but it's over salted and dry for the most part. Way overpriced for the quality. The cheese plate was bland compared to cheese plates at other places. Great food. Hadn't been here in years... Not sure why. Lots of choices makes it hard to decide. We had 24 hash, veggie hash & side of Oatmeal with chutney. All great. I would NEVER have thought to pair Oatmeal with chutney, but it works. :) On hashes we ordered small & I couldn't finish mine (teenager did) ... Main difference is more potatoes on larger one. Apparently Their jams taste homemade... Not overly sweet, which I LOVE. More of the actual fruit flavor. Especially loved the peach. Our waiter, OSCAR, was SUPER attentive & helpful. Ask for him! My, how the mighty have fallen. Oh ye 24 Diner of late night escapades past. Whenst thou get so terrible? I've been to 24 Diner before and every time I was blown away by absolute perfection of the chicken and waffles. The way the syrup and hot sauce drip down the perfectly fried succulent white breast were dripping down and moistening the hot bready waffle were a thing of joy. Be warned that menu item no longer exists. My fiancee and soon-to-be father-in-law split the chicken and waffles today while I decided to try my hand at the no-bean chili. Massive mistakes all around. They said "at least the chicken was good" but the waffle "seemed frozen" I tried a bite--what used to be a perfect bite, with chicken and waffle both on the fork--and it was forgettable. Even my father-in-law, normally a simple and quiet man about such things, said the waffle was oddly hard. My experience was even worse. The $15 chili came in a pathetically small cup, with a scrumptious-seeming chunk of cornbread riding sidecar with a pat of butter on top. The cornbread was not scrumptious. It was a yellow brick straight out of Oz. Trying to rip through its defensive carapace was an exercise in slamming my fork down and ripping into hard crunchy pieces all over the plate. I've... never in my life had cornbread so hard. Ever. I pathetically tried to scrounge whatever butter not melted into the corny exoskeleton to provide some moisture, to no avail. There just wasn't enough butter to make more than half of this thing left dry. Now the chili. Let me explain my mindset in ordering the chili when chicken and waffles is all I ever want. There are only 7 entrees on the menu of 24 Diner and No-Bean Chili is the very first one. The description of the chili starts with "brisket, chuck roast". I'm thinking you only indicate these features if there's going to be some sizeable chunks in your chili. And it sounded good. I was wrong. Never get the chili from here. If you are thinking about getting the chili from here, I have some instructions: 1. Put the menu down (or your phone if you are currently reading this. Wait, pick your phone up and put in in your pocket.) 2. In your best Jerry Maguire voice, announce to the table, "I've decided I need chili, and anybody else wants to come with me, this moment will be the ground floor of something real and fun and inspiring and true in this godforsaken business and we will do it together! Who's coming with me?" 3. Leave. 4. Go to Texas Chili Parlor down the block. 5. Order anything. The chili tasted fine, and had a nice spice, but the pieces were very small. I was expecting sizeable chunks of which there were none. To compound matters, we didn't see our server for nearly 30 minutes on the patio, and it being a lunch break, the decision was eat the food or go through the rest of the work day hungry. By the time the server came back, we felt the need to complain about the food, to which she stared hard at us unblinkingly and said, "okay." There was no look of understanding, no "oh no!", no sympathy whatsoever. She was rude enough that when she walked away my fiancee remarked, "they probably just think we want free food." I said, "What do you even do when the food is so disappointing? Keep it to yourself? Complain on Yelp?" The manager came a little later and when we shared our same comments he said "its good to know, so we can tweak things. No, its the same chicken and waffles we've always had. Sometimes there just isn't enough salt, or a little too much. But thank you for letting us know and we'll take care of it." They comped the chili and that was it. I wanted to give the food and service two stars but I can't in good conscience two-star this place when they at least made some sort of effort to alleviate the poor experience. I will, however, not come back. If this review sounds unkind, its because I don't look at 24 Diner as a family-owned or local establishment hustling to make the best food they can. I look at it as a touristy restaurant in a prime location that's now coasting on its previous reputation of good chicken and waffles and a dozen glowing media reviews. read more

super average diner my friends and I came across when we visited Austin. We were actually quite disappointed at the quality of the food. We ordered the following: Breakfast Platter ($11.95): this came with two eggs, choice of bacon, sausage, ham or homemade veggie sausage, house-cut skillets fries and choice of toast. Super bland breakfast platter. The sausage was way too dry and the toast was too hard to eat! Chai Latte ($4.25): my favorite part of my breakfast. The serving size was HUGE and the chai flavor was significant (which I like)! Small Veggie Hash ($11.95): caramelized onions, spinach, roasted mushrooms, avocado and swiss cheese. This was such a disappointing dish because the egg that came with it WAS NOT runny when it's supposed to be. Waffle Breakfast ($14.95): two eggs, choice of bacon, sausage, ham or homemade veggie sausage and brown butter sugar. My friend did not like this at all - he even said the waffle itself was bad!
