We got the cowboy with the tri tip and pork ribs with Mac & cheese and garlic mash. It was more than enough for two people. We also got an extra side of Mac & cheese and garlic mash which was over kill but it was so yummy! So flavorful and you can tell everything was cooked with love. What. A.Gem. My daughter and son-in-law have raved about this place for years. They go every time they are in the Palm Springs area. And, they have been itching to get the wife and I there too. Well... mission accomplished! Initial impression, (do let the exterior fool you), was not overwhelming but I trust their judgement. Glad we did. Rustic, old west vibe grabs you by the poo poo upon entry. Lots of memorabilia, pics of Pappy himself, license plates from all over, as far away from as Canada!!! Excellent menu (wife got a salad, me the chicken sandwich), and both were delicious! Serving sizes are very large to boot. Other items ordered from our group were the Mac and Cheese, (I tried it and it's fabulous), Baby Back Ribs, Smashburger and Cowboy Combo. Those in our party raved about each of them. Service was spot on, especially since we had a group of 9. This place was exactly what I imagine a modern-day saloon should be. We had seen it featured on multiple TV shows, so we made it a point to stop by while we were in Joshua Tree ,in fact, we drove quite a distance specifically to visit. Unfortunately, there wasn't any live music when we arrived. The band was scheduled to start a little later, which was a bit of a bummer, but since we were a large group, we ended up entertaining ourselves with good food, drinks, and plenty of conversation.The barbecue was phenomenal -well cooked, flavorful, and incredibly filling. The drinks were boozy and generous, and the staff was genuinely sweet and welcoming throughout our visit. Ironically, the music finally started just as we were getting ready to leave. It was a little too late for us to stay, but hearing the first few songs as we headed out gave us a taste of the atmosphere we'd been hoping for. There aren't many options when dining in Joshua Tree. We chose this restaurant because they had good reviews and we wanted steak. When we arrived, staff was running all around us and I mean literally avoiding eye contact to not help us. We got one of their attentions and were able to get our names down, they apparently only do pen and paper for their list. During the wait we walked around pioneer town and took some pictures then made our way back just in time. Didn't matter much because as soon as we sat down, all the staff ignored us again. We were able to put in our orders and that was the last time we saw our waitress until the bill came. Other people brought our food, I had over cooked steak with cold mashed potatoes. The table had the strangest Mac and cheese and loaded fries that tasted microwaved. The decor was okay, the lights were very low and it made it hard to see the menu. How I haven't left a review here yet I'll never understand?! Pappy & Harriet's goes way back for me and I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's insane to see how much this spot has grown over the years. When we used to grow up eating here it was a relatively locals only spot and pretty dead some days. We'd come in for lunch, have quiet meals and not a tourist in sight. However, over the last 10 years that's changed. Once bigger name artists and celebrities started popping in this place became the new "it" desert spot and honestly happy to see them shining and growing. I've just learned if we want a more intimate experience to come off season and during the weekdays. Local or visitor this restaurant is one of my favs in the desert. I'm a sucker for a rock n roll country western vibe and this place is it! Strong cocktails, delicious bbq and meats, and live music. Can't go wrong there. Cocktails are always on point here. I love the desert flower and it's my go to girly cocktail. Strong but slightly sweet, perfection. They've got a great beer selection here as well. If you're coming to eat here I'd highly recommend getting any of their bbq or meat plates. Their grill is old and seasoned and just makes everything taste so good. When I come I'm always getting some variation of their steaks. Always cooked to perfection, with a side of their big cut fries. Heaven on earth. The staff and service here are always stellar. I feel bad for them when they are crazy busy but honestly they hustle and make it all look seamless. Everytime we come, regardless of how busy it is, the drinks and food are extremely well paced. There's a sign inside that says "if ur in a rush ur in the wrong place" so not the quickest place esp since there r many people wanting to eat here so theres a bit of a wait. I think we waiting 30 mins or so and finally got seated! I got their half rack of baby back ribs with seasonal veggies and cold slaw and it did NOT disappoint. The BBQ sauce is excellent. Should have asked if they sell it! Coleslaw, which can be tricky, was also just fresh and tasty - not gloppy or too sweet. Phew. Atmosphere is fun, Western, good vibes. Service is friendlier than expected in a good way. No lines at 11:30 am on a Saturday at the end of January. Leaving at 12:30 pm, definitely lines forming and parking lot filling. Today was the day I finally visited Pappy & Harriet's. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and got seated within mins. Our Server was Will, and I loved his energy. Went to Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace and tried their $99 family special: such a great deal for the amount of food you get (especially with 2 kids) They originally told us the wait would be about an hour, but we were pleasantly surprised and got seated within 25 minutes. That already set the tone for a good experience. The girls at the front were super nice and really considerate with everyone waiting. You could tell they were doing their best to keep things moving and communicate clearly. Our waiter was so sweet, and the staff overall was very attentive throughout the meal. Their system is a bit disorganized, we lined up to put our name down and was told there was a wait so we walked around pioneertown and came back when it was around time. I came back and saw that instead of taking peoples names down they started to just seat people in line one by one. i waited in line again to get seated. I ordered the cowboy combo and the ribs were really good, very flavorful. i ordered medium rare for the tri tip but it was so hard to chew, not tender at all. I only ate one piece. Ok so of course you have to stop by it's almost a crime not to. We got there right after they opened and the lunch rush shortly followed us. The iced tea was the best I've had in a really long time. The Cesar salad was good but for a side salad it was rather large. But there are worse problems to have in the world. I ordered my tri tip sandwich medium and it came out well done. It came with a side of bbq sauce which it needed because the sandwich itself was pretty dry. The cheese fries however were delicious. 10 out of 10 recommended A dry sandwich won't keep me from returning. I'll just order something else next time. read more

Pioneertown has only a couple of restaurant bars, and the most popular one is Pappy & Harriet's, it's just near the entrance of town. If you're planning to go, it's a good idea to make a reservation (they usually open bookings about four weeks in advance), or at least put your name down before you start exploring, since the wait can be an hour or more. I don't usually do a bad review but this place deserves it. It's a tourist trap with over priced mediocre food and after reading reviews we thought let's try it. Wrong!! Service was good. Nice waiter gave us time to go over the menu and we asked for separate checks no problem. Here's where things went downhill. $14 for a hot dog with fries! You have got to be kidding me. A BLTA was $18.00. There should have been loads of lettuce,tomatoes and avocado on that sandwich but NOPE. There was bacon but the rest was lacking in substance. Pulled pork sandwich was $24.00. Wow! That's one special pig. You can spend $5.00 to get a hand cut ice cube but regular ice cubes were not served with water. The bill includes 3% added on to pay the kitchen staff! The owners can't afford to pay them a living wage! You want a cocktail? Be prepared to spend $15-$20 for one of those. An eclectic decor with so much stuff on the walls that really needed a good cleaning. I think dust had been building up for years. all in all very disappointing. Baby Back Ribs: 3/5 I tasted the possibilities. Very balanced flavors, not too smoky and not too salty. Everything was in place for it being the perfect rib. The sauce was also very good, it kinda reminded me of steak sauce with a little more spice. But maybe because we weren't seated in the main dining room, the ribs fell flat. A little tough, a little cold, I felt like these could have gotten a little more love at the end of the day. Coleslaw: 2/5 It was just cabbage and some really light dressing. It tasted kind of like the salad packs at Costco. Mac and Cheese: 2.5/5 Again, not for me. I felt like it was too saucy and cheesy, making it overly heavy and gloopy. Ambiance: The ambience bumped this place up a rank. I really liked the vibes here. It is casual, it does have a neighborhood bar sort of energy, but the whole place is immaculately themed and I can see you kind of dressing up for the festivities. We drove in the longer way off Old Woman Springs Road, and by the time we got there it felt like we had stumbled onto some hidden cowboy outpost with a legendary music past. For this dedicated Yelpie...the food was good, not life-changing, but good enough to do the job. The bison burger was solid, the chips and queso were tasty, and my wife liked the ribs. They also have a full bar and the drinks were good, which adds to the overall experience. But let's be honest, you're not really coming here just for the food. You come because the place is flat-out cool. The setting in Pioneertown, the old Western-style buildings, the bar, the outdoor seating, and the history of huge artists playing tiny shows here all make it feel special. Paul McCartney playing in a place like this is just ridiculous in the best possible way. Add in names like Robert Plant, Arctic Monkeys, Patti Smith, and Queens of the Stone Age, and you realize this isn't just a stop--it's a legend. It's both touristy and local, you can see the mix right away. People driving in from all over, mixed with locals who clearly treat it like their regular hangout. That contrast actually adds to the charm. Unique, fun, memorable, and definitely a place everyone should try at least once. P.S. We've always enjoyed coming here, especially for concerts, and have had good experiences in the past, which is why this visit was so disappointing. Unfortunately, the food was not up to the standard we remembered. Several of the items tasted as though they had been prepared long before being served--almost like leftovers from the day before. The flavors and overall quality felt noticeably off, which was especially discouraging considering how much we used to enjoy dining here. We're not sure if there's been a recent change in management or in the kitchen, but the difference was significant enough that we felt compelled to share our experience. We truly hope this was just an off day, because we'd love to see the food return to the quality we remember.
