There aren't many options when dining in Joshua Tree. We chose this restaurant because they had good reviews and we wanted steak. When we arrived, staff was running all around us and I mean literally avoiding eye contact to not help us. We got one of their attentions and were able to get our names down, they apparently only do pen and paper for their list. During the wait we walked around pioneer town and took some pictures then made our way back just in time. Didn't matter much because as soon as we sat down, all the staff ignored us again. We were able to put in our orders and that was the last time we saw our waitress until the bill came. Other people brought our food, I had over cooked steak with cold mashed potatoes. The table had the strangest Mac and cheese and loaded fries that tasted microwaved. The decor was okay, the lights were very low and it made it hard to see the menu. We've always enjoyed coming here, especially for concerts, and have had good experiences in the past, which is why this visit was so disappointing. Unfortunately, the food was not up to the standard we remembered. Several of the items tasted as though they had been prepared long before being served--almost like leftovers from the day before. The flavors and overall quality felt noticeably off, which was especially discouraging considering how much we used to enjoy dining here. We're not sure if there's been a recent change in management or in the kitchen, but the difference was significant enough that we felt compelled to share our experience. We truly hope this was just an off day, because we'd love to see the food return to the quality we remember. How I haven't left a review here yet I'll never understand?! Pappy & Harriet's goes way back for me and I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's insane to see how much this spot has grown over the years. When we used to grow up eating here it was a relatively locals only spot and pretty dead some days. We'd come in for lunch, have quiet meals and not a tourist in sight. However, over the last 10 years that's changed. Once bigger name artists and celebrities started popping in this place became the new "it" desert spot and honestly happy to see them shining and growing. I've just learned if we want a more intimate experience to come off season and during the weekdays. Local or visitor this restaurant is one of my favs in the desert. I'm a sucker for a rock n roll country western vibe and this place is it! Strong cocktails, delicious bbq and meats, and live music. Can't go wrong there. Cocktails are always on point here. I love the desert flower and it's my go to girly cocktail. Strong but slightly sweet, perfection. They've got a great beer selection here as well. If you're coming to eat here I'd highly recommend getting any of their bbq or meat plates. Their grill is old and seasoned and just makes everything taste so good. When I come I'm always getting some variation of their steaks. Always cooked to perfection, with a side of their big cut fries. Heaven on earth. The staff and service here are always stellar. I feel bad for them when they are crazy busy but honestly they hustle and make it all look seamless. Everytime we come, regardless of how busy it is, the drinks and food are extremely well paced. This place is a must check-out if in the area and a craving to get your bbq on. There's a sign inside that says "if ur in a rush ur in the wrong place" so not the quickest place esp since there r many people wanting to eat here so theres a bit of a wait. I think we waiting 30 mins or so and finally got seated! I got their half rack of baby back ribs with seasonal veggies and cold slaw and it did NOT disappoint. Love the dry run and it was mostly soft and came with bbq to dip so not overly saucy! Partner finished the chicken sandwich so i bet it was good. In the middle of nowhere but well worth the drive to pioneer town. Super cute vintage western feel. We were able to catch two of the bands performing, which was great. Had the chili cheese fries and the Mac n cheese with Tri tip and garlic mash. Both were delicious, the chili was more of a chile con carne and not your regular chili beans. Always wanted to come here for years and never got a chance. Now I did. Ordered the Cowboy Combo with rack of ribs and tri tip, plus mac and cheese and baked beans, and a lemonade. The ribs were tender with a nice smoky flavor and came off the bone clean. The tri tip was just as solid, juicy and well seasoned with that classic barbecue taste. The mac and cheese was creamy and comforting, and the baked beans had a good balance of sweet and savory. The lemonade was cold and refreshing and worked well with the meal. The atmosphere is a big part of the experience. Rustic, lively, and full of character. It feels like a true desert spot with history behind it. The place can get busy, but the staff kept things moving and were friendly throughout. This place loves to its hype. Definitely more than just a meal. Service is friendlier than expected in a good way. No lines at 11:30 am on a Saturday at the end of January. Leaving at 12:30 pm, definitely lines forming and parking lot filling. I ordered the cowboy combo and the ribs were really good, very flavorful. i ordered medium rare for the tri tip but it was so hard to chew, not tender at all. I only ate one piece. Ok so of course you have to stop by it's almost a crime not to. We got there right after they opened and the lunch rush shortly followed us. The iced tea was the best I've had in a really long time. The Cesar salad was good but for a side salad it was rather large. But there are worse problems to have in the world. I ordered my tri tip sandwich medium and it came out well done. It came with a side of bbq sauce which it needed because the sandwich itself was pretty dry. They also have a full bar and the drinks were good, which adds to the overall experience. But let's be honest, you're not really coming here just for the food. You come because the place is flat-out cool. The setting in Pioneertown, the old Western-style buildings, the bar, the outdoor seating, and the history of huge artists playing tiny shows here all make it feel special. Paul McCartney playing in a place like this is just ridiculous in the best possible way. Add in names like Robert Plant, Arctic Monkeys, Patti Smith, and Queens of the Stone Age, and you realize this isn't just a stop--it's a legend. It's both touristy and local, you can see the mix right away. People driving in from all over, mixed with locals who clearly treat it like their regular hangout. Baby Back Ribs: 3/5 I tasted the possibilities. Very balanced flavors, not too smoky and not too salty. Everything was in place for it being the perfect rib. The sauce was also very good, it kinda reminded me of steak sauce with a little more spice. But maybe because we weren't seated in the main dining room, the ribs fell flat. A little tough, a little cold, I felt like these could have gotten a little more love at the end of the day. Coleslaw: 2/5 It was just cabbage and some really light dressing. It tasted kind of like the salad packs at Costco. Mac and Cheese: 2.5/5 Again, not for me. I felt like it was too saucy and cheesy, making it overly heavy and gloopy. We got the nachos which was a flat plate of a couple chips laid out and some melted cheese. The saddest plate of nachos I've ever seen. I finally made it back to Pappy & Harriet's after first visiting in October 2018. The wood fire grilled Atlantic salmon was superb and well worth the detour on my drive to Palm Springs. William was my server during this visit and provided stellar service. Pappy & Harriet's is also: 1.) One of the anchors of Pioneertown, an Old West town built in the 1940s as a film set for Western movies and TV shows. I walked over and explored the shops and buildings on Mane Street immediately following my lunch; and 2.) A beloved music venue. While I've never been to any of their shows, a Grammy-winning blues artist from my hometown in Mississippi has played here multiple times, and Reno native Red Leather was the headliner for the night of my visit. read more

As someone who lives locally in Big Bear and spends a lot of time in the high desert, Pappy & Harriet's is truly something special to have out here. Instead of driving all the way into Los Angeles to see big-name musicians, you can experience some incredible bands and artists in a much more intimate setting. It's one of those rare venues where you can be just a few feet away from performers you'd normally only see on a huge stage. The atmosphere is classic Pioneertown, rustic, lively, and full of character. They have both indoor and outdoor stages, and each offers a fun experience depending on the night and the show. I have even camped in the nearby camping zone after a late night. Highly suggest! If you visit during the day, I highly recommend the steak salad. This place was so cute and decorated with an old western style. The restaurant was pretty big and has such a nice outside view. My mac n cheese dinner was alright, I added tri tip to my mac and it was good but the mac n cheese in itself wasn't that great as it tasted sort of milky.
