Cons: Very scammy pricing This is a slick organization, and by slick I mean kind of corporate and slimy. The plumber that came out was nice and fine, came at exactly the scheduled time and was done with the work quickly. No problems there. But the business operation is very scammy, and "discount" it is not. If I had it to do over again I would have trusted my gut after the first phone call and moved on to try to find a local, independent plumber. I used yelp to find someone to fix a broken garbage disposal, and literally less than a minute after submitting my request I got a yelp message, a text, and a phone call from Discount Plumbers. On the phone was a friendly fellow offering to schedule a free appointment to look at the problem and give me a quote. It didn't take long for me to realize the guy on the phone was AI. That made me realize this was a large, corporate organization, not a local plumber. In spite of my misgivings, and because I didn't want to waste a lot of time, I agreed to the appointment for the next day. As I mentioned, the plumber arrived right on time and was very nice. As I had already determined via my own investigation, he told me the disposal needed to be replaced. He tapped some things into his iPad and came up with a quote of almost $700. I asked him for a breakdown of parts and labor, and he was unable to give that to me, trying to make me feel fine that the amount would cover everything. I asked him what brand disposal he would be using, and I looked it up online to find that it could be purchased for $150 at home depot. I asked him how long he thought the work would take, and he said 2 hours, which I figured meant the labor charge would be around $250/hour. As it became obvious I was skeptical, he offered a 10% discount. Since I didn't want to take the time to find someone else to come out, I just went with it. The work took 30 minutes. I just paid someone $1000/hour to replace a garbage disposal and feel pretty stupid. The icing on the cake was when he showed me a broken O-ring and said he would be giving me a new one for free. Hired Water Heaters Only to replace a water heater in Hayward. Often the truest test of a quality…read morebusiness is how they perform when things do not go well. In my case, I have quite a story of having to go five days without hot water because the unit I received was defective. The day after the install we found the tank had shut down. After a reset and restart done over the phone with the installer assisting, the unit failed again, a short time later. The next day which was a Saturday, another technician came out to swap out a heat sensor which appeared to be the problem. While changing out the part, the tech noticed that insulation near the assembly had burned, and ash was present. He vacuumed it out and restarted the unit. It made a horrible noise, and he spent a half an hour on the phone with the manufacturer tech support trying to diagnose the problem. The noise eventually went away and he finished the repair. Unfortunately the machine shut down again after we got one warm shower. I called on Sunday, and explained that I was no longer comfortable with the unit being in our house and I wanted a replacement, of a different maker. Without hesitation they agreed, and Monday morning, after acquiring a, more expensive model of a different make from a supplier, we got a replacement installed, at no additional cost. These problems are rare, and not the fault of the installer. I could not have asked for a more timely and considerate treatment as a valued customer of this business.
