I love to support small businesses when traveling, especially black owned restaurants. My family took me to try 42 Fry and I'm so glad they did! The shrimp and fried whiting were both flavorful and fried perfectly! We actually ordered more shrimp after we devoured the first batch. My favorite portion of our meal were the hush puppies! They had so much flavor and came with a side of what I believe to be a cinnamon sugar butter for dipping. That was my first time ever having that as a side to hush puppies. So I thought it was quite innovative. The only caveat is they weren't hot, which made me question whether they were fresh. Nonetheless we still enjoyed them. Overall, my family and I thoroughly enjoyed the food. We just felt the restaurant could be a bit cleaner. read more

Today we were hungry for seafood and 42 fry is close by. The manager was so pleasant and accommodating! In a timely manner we received our lunch while sitting outside on this lovely day. I can't say I enjoyed my most recent visit to 42 Fry. I try to stop in whenever I'm in the area. This trip, my fish just wasn't hittin' - it was a bit dry/overly fried, the "fried" shrimp was stale with no breading. At least my fries were good. I'm not sure if the fact that I went on a weekday had anything to do with it (different cooks from the weekend maybe ), but I was a bit disappointed. I give this place 5 stars on any day except today. I ordered online, just like I always do, 2 shrimp tacos with a side & drink, and 2 Tuesday special fish tacos. I come to pick my food up but the bag Is light . Checks order and i have half (just 1 of each taco) of what I paid for. The cashier was very friendly and helpful in trying to convince the cook how my order was wrong. He remade it but was out of lettuce (he made the first set beautifully but used all that was left for for the day). I get it, I came close to closing, you're tired... but I still paid full price. He remakes the order once and the cashier informs him how it's still wrong. Looking at the ticket I can see how someone would make the mistake. She has him redo it and clearly his frustration showed in the presentation. I had less fish and shrimp than I did in my first plate with half the tacos and it looked like someone had just thrown a piece of fish and some shrimp in a taco with no love or care that's usually put into their food. At this point it wasn't worth arguing because clearly this cook didn't value his restaurant's patrons. I asked for the butter than came with my hush puppies because he forgot that too and proceeded to get an attitude with the cashier. I hate I had to leave this review because I really love this place and their food. I am going back to continue eating there, but I just hope a more patient cook is preparing my food. If i could give everything about this place 5 stars and just 1 to that angry cook I would but instead I'm leaving a 3 star review. I was very tempted to drop the 1 but I don't want to slander a place I enjoy so much because 1 employee was having an off day read more

Friday night and this place is alright. The place is in a popular location. The place is small and just a little dark. The menu is easy to read. The seafood is price right. The girl at the register is just blah. No mask on or hair net. They offer 10% off to first responders and students on Monday. Social distancing is practiced for the customers. They have quite a few specials throughout the week. Very busy so your order takes about 10 minutes to get prepared. You fix your own drink while the food is prepared. I got the shrimp basket for 10.00.The food was hot and fresh. The golden brown shrimp were huge. The fries were not soggy. They give you a handful of condiments so need to ask. I got very full. If I had left a review of Greenville's 42 Fry in the past, it would have been much more complimentary. They have great fried fish and shrimp, though the fries were typically a bit soggy and the iced tea was a bitter disappointment. The staff is always polite and efficient. Last week, in an effort to save some calories, my husband and I ordered fish and shrimp from the a la carte menu. For $16 we got 2 oz of fried catfish, 2 oz of broiled catfish, and exactly one tiny shrimp. I thought someone must have made a mistake, but a phone call to the restaurant and a later email from them verified those portions were correct. I think customers would get plenty of food if they ordered the higher price items, but we felt cheated and will not be going back. read more

I could taste some flavor but it was over powered by what tasted like seasoning salt on both my fries and shrimp and my tongue was hurting shortly after. I didn't use any other condiments.
