Hurrah for 44 Degrees North! We visited the Millbridge, Cherryfield, Harrington area this week. Two weeks earlier, I tried to find restaurants via a Google search and got very little results. Two or three places listed weren't even open. So my expectations for dinner were low. We chose 44 Degrees North and boy were we surprised. Great dinner menu at the restaurant. The service was fast, friendly, and informative for visitors from away. We found the other diners friendly too. We ate here both nights and loved it twice. First and foremost, the two stars are for the waitress and bartender/waitress who clearly were overburdened and still killing it. We ordered the baked lobster dinner and while decent in taste of haddock stuffing in the baked whole lobster and size of it, it took entirely too long (35 minutes) , not because the kitchen was heavy on orders and lean on staff, it was audibly clear that there was way too much fooling around going on and not enough cooking. I worked in the oil and gas industry so cursing starts to become white noise to me, however, I felt uncomfortable for the elderly patrons and children present with all the F-bombs that were being announced from the kitchen and launched at the waitress. Clearly it is a favorite with locals (as evidence in the bar area) and I can see why with how great the servers/bartender are but the wait compounded by the inedible sides (a canned green bean, frozen veg mix with peppers that was intensely bitter and mashed potatoes that were clearly sitting in a warmer for too long just isn't worth a second trip. It was Saturday and apparently besides the slim pickings, everyone rolls up the sidewalk by 7 or 8 respectively so we went there by default, not design. read more

What a pleasant surprise! Place was jammed on a Thursday night at 715 and totally empty at 8:30. Big crowd slowed the service at first but the waitress apologized and made up for it with quick and pleasant service once she got to us. Food was really good. Crab Stew was the best crab soup we ever had; chock full with a ton af crab meat and a nice creamy, buttered broth. No potatoes. Lobster Risotto was baked in scallop shells topped with bread crumbs and was delicious. Regular menu included mussels as well as fried seafood and assorted burgers. A tall glass dessert case as you come in was very tempting but with soup, salad and Risotto we were filled to the gills. I wish we had the time to try it again this year. read more

First I would go again! I have a rule that I never give 5 stars on the first visit, but I can say the service was 5 star! Great mixed drinks! Wife had a Blueberry hard lemonade and I had a Monster. I would order them again! The food was better than good, but they were also one of the only places still open. I would get the prime rib again. It is a quaint Maine restaurant with a bar in the back. They do offer military discount which is also a bonus here in New England! Would like to come back to see if they earn a fifth star. Also shocked to see the newest review was over a year ago. Not much to choose from on a Monday night. Anna was awesome waitress for being brand new. Nice little place. Full Lobster was pretty small. My friends dinner chicken scampi was extremely greasy n oily, more than it normally should be. Lobster Risotto was ok. Not fabulous but not awful. read more

Three of us stopped into this place for lunch. The first thing we noticed were the prices which seemed high, but we were starving so we hoped the food would live up to the dollars. No such luck. The fried haddock sandwich was so hard it was practically too hard to bite. And the chicken cobb salad had overcooked chicken that was also way under par of what it should be. The only decent thing was a burger, along with our waitress who was very pleasant. I'd come here in years past and it was actually good, so I don't know what happened. New cook perhaps, new owner maybe. All I can say is you'd be best to stay away for now. read more

We were in the area and just happened to chance upon 44 Degrees North. We were so happy that we did. The setting is quite quaint with a bar placed just behind the dining room. The atmosphere (on a Wednesday evening) was laid back. The server was quick to our table, checked on us frequently, and was very friendly (she let our son pet the blue lobster that was in the tank). Our family ordered the dynamite shrimp (I forget exactly what they called this), the lobster roll with sweet potato fries, and the fried haddock. Literally everything was absolutely incredible. The seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly. The sauce on the shrimp was a tad spicy (I would have liked more but I like food very spicy - it is the perfect amount for most eaters) and so delicious. The lobster roll was the best we had in the entire area (including Bar Harbor). We passed on pie as we were stuffed but their baked goods looked phenomenal. This was our first meal in this part of Maine. Staff was friendly. My father ordered a steak with waffles fries, my husband got a crab roll and I got baked lobster. It was my first time getting a baked lobster so I didn't truly understand what I was ordering. We also got some mussels. Overall a good meal. They were very crowded and busy so glad we were able to get a table. If back in the area we would stop in again. They have a restaurant part and a bar part. We sat in the restaurant part and it was quieter than the bar part. Only other thing beware of the big step at the front door. It is a larger than normal step. read more

This restaurant is a gem of the coast. Service is run by a professional, competent, efficient and attentive staff. I came in early for dinner and was told they were already booked but I could sit at the bar or the waitress prep bar for service. I chose the latter and enjoyed the best baby back pork ribs I can recall. Here in a seafood town who knew their ribs would be tender, moist abs flavorful. I wanted to get take out dessert and followed the recommendation of the wait staff to try the lemon chiffon cake. I took it home and WOW. I think it was one of the best pastries I've ever had light lemony and smooth. This place is terrific don't hesitate to stop and eat. read more

Off season, at least, this is a warm, welcoming, homey place, small enough for a waitress to stride across in just a few steps and spacious enough to fit in plenty of booths and tables to keep her on the move. Service was quick, efficient, and flawless. Food was generous and tasty. The lasagna was nice and included an unannounced side salad. The table bread was a keeper--anadama? Reasonable prices. No fuss. The only downside to this visit was the table of middle-aged locals "having a beer" and, a couple of them, reverting to adolescence. All in good fun, I guess, but if it were my place I would have reined them in for the benefit of visitors in their midst. read more

Disappointed because lunch consist of mostly sandwiches. I do not eat bread and they do not have gluten free options. Service was good but food not so much. Really enjoying touring Down East but it is a food desert. We decide to make the 40 minute trip to eat here and glad we did. Waitress was really friendly. Calamari was fresh and fried green beans tasty. Salads were fresh and crisp. Juicy hamburger and tender smothered chicken were the main course and the desserts were excellent. We stopped here for lunch on our way down the coast of Maine. Cheerful service greeted us, seasoned our lunch with friendly conversation, and made sure we had everything we needed. The beer and wine were cold and refreshing, the lobster roll was generous (and a bargain for peak tourist-season), and the taco salad was delicious (pro tip: put the chili ON the salad...so good). We ordered a blueberry cheesecake pie to go and it was amazing. Overall, a fabulous choice for a lunchtime bite! It's been awhile for me, to be fair, but I gave up on the place. I am a local and won't go here because they over cooked a fish dinner (dry and tough) which is a cardinal offense to me. Then a short while later I ordered a couple hamburgers to go, medium rare. They were also over cooked (well done and tough) yet the fries were limp and slimy. I just decided whomever was chef didn't know how to cook. That was more than 2 years ago. If you just want a drink, go ahead. read more

This restaurant is not good. We stopped in for lunch on Saturday. When we arrived, three other parties were seated after us, yet, we were the last to get our food. My mother and I each ordered the haddock and shrimp combo which was so bad it was inedible. The fish tasted old and the batter was too thick to bite into. I asked for sweet potato fries with mine, and even they were not good. They tasted freezer burned. The haddock and shrimp combo is listed on the menu as $13.95. When the bill came, we noticed the price on the receipt was 19.95. When we asked about why they charged $6.00 more, the waitress said it says on the menu "Prices subject to change". Charging $6.00 without telling you up front, and then for food that is inedible is pretty bad customer service. Do not waste your money at this restaurant. Better to go across the street to the Milbridge House or Vasquez. read more

Omg, this food was amazing! I order the wild caught salmon. It came with a side of pickled beets, amazing! The fish was cooked perfectly. I even got a lesson in lobsters. In a small town there aren't many places to eat a nice dinner. 44 North fits the bill for generous portions and hearty dinners. One of their specialties is the Red Hook Ale fried shrimp. They also have a special "lazy lobster" which is lobster de-shelled for you (thus the "lazy" part of the dish), and baked in a casserole of seafood stuffing. It was rich, full of lobster, and delicious. They have various desserts for those that have room. We had a lemon cake which was divine, and very beautifully crafted as well. All in all, the service here is a bit slow, but the atmosphere is nice, and the food is good. read more

This place has been in business for years and also has switched hands. It definitely is better than it use to be. I have eaten here many times with family and for business. The staff at times is friendly but love to talk among each other. The food is more consistent than it was years ago. I am just not a fan of fried foods and they seem to sell a lot of that. I love fresh vegetables and I believe I could be mistaken but the veggies seem to come from a freezer. If you love seeing locals than this should be a stop for you and listen to fisherman tell stories. Drinks are good and portion sizes are great. Great location right in the middle of town. Been to the 44 3 x......I never have given a bad review of an eatery considering once or twice things can get messed up and not 100%. I understand this. But, when you ask for a haddock sandwich and it comes out barley ,maybe 1/4 in thick and dry as popcorn theres an issue. Ive tried it twice,once as a dinner and has been the same and if its haddock Ill eat my leather boots. Scallops are not perfectly cylindrical but theirs seem to be just that way ,tasteless. Leading me to believe they are punched out of skate or something similar. Havent tried the dragon steak which Im told is great. Wait staff could NOT be better! I am a regular at this estabishment and can tell you first hand its a decent place for lunch, dinner, and excessive drinking. With the next closest restaurant being 45 minutes on either side of this place your options are limited but it doesnt matter id still choose the place based on atmosphere and service. Friday nights are usually the most hectic so avoid them if you want peace and quite. Lil more quite out front also if you have children or elderly with you, pub can get a bit rowdy sometimes. not like "road house" rowdy jus a lil loud :). Def worth a try!! read more

We went on a busy Friday evening. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. I enjoyed the prime rib special which was a generous portion. Other entree's at the table were the seafood special and a Chef salad. All of the food was delicious and prepared as we asked. The kids enjoyed pasta and a burger. read more

I eat here a couple of times a year while traveling for work but I've often told people that if this place was in my own hometown, I'd still frequently dine there. I've never actually eaten in the dining area, just the pub because I mostly dine alone and eat at the bar. If you're touring Maine and want to get a sense of the local population I'd suggest giving it a try. The bar is full of friendly locals and fishermen from the area and I usually end up in a conversation with somebody. The food here is excellent and the portions are plentiful. As I said, this review isn't based on one experience but more like a dozen over the past 5 years, I've had many dishes, Ahi tuna Steak, Prime Rib, Baked Haddock, Fish and Chips, Salads, and many, many beers. I'm definitely a foodie and feel like I know good food and 44 North is worth it. I would have given them a higher score than 4 stars but for the two times I've gone there at 7:55 and been told I couldn't get dinner. I feel that if the kitchen closes at 8, you take orders until 8, period. But that's a Maine problem not a 44 North problem. No matter where you go in ME people are trying to kick you out 15 minutes before closing. read more

Food is good but the pace is slow it's a small town so its to be expected. Also dont think just because you came for a lobster for lunch you'll get one we were told they wouldnt steam a lobster before dinnertime.
