Loved this place! I ordered the Dragon steak and it was the very definition of sweet and spicy, not sort of sweet and sort of spicy. My server, Kristin, was friendly and good at her job, not to mention just plain good people. Lucky me. This isn't a bad place to eat but it also wasn't anything particularly exciting. The decor was my favorite part of the restaurant, it was updated and fresh. Service felt minimal and a little slow. We both had lobster rolls which were pretty skimpy on meat especially when the picture in the menu shows the bun overflowing (a little deceptive IMO). Also, comes with (Ruffles?) potato chips, you have to pay extra for fries, kinda lame, I can have chips anytime! The desserts did look delicious, but we didn't try anything as we had to be on our way. If you're in the area and need a place to eat I would recommend it but it's not a "must stop." read more

Great food. The scallop roll had plenty of scallops in it. The haddock wrap was good. The Smokehouse chicken wrap was very tasty with plenty of chicken. And the luncheon mushroom burger was a nice size with lots of flavor. We recommend you get an order of onion rings as a side. They are more like a beer batter pub style. And they were large size rings. And finally the waffle fries were plentiful and rich in potato flavor. And the prices were very, very reasonable. We stopped for dinner last evening. This is another local restaurant. Don't let the 4 stars stop you. Don't expect white tablecloths etc. This is just great local cooking. Salads and soup were great. Loaf of wheat bread, warm I might add, was super, the second loaf was even better. Both had haddock, mine lemon with capers, his lemon butter, both generous portions. Looking for a cold beer, we chose 44° North for proximity and because we read some good reviews. We ended up making a meal of it and were glad we did. Although it's not fancy, the food was good and the service was charming. Kayla (mentioned as a delight in another review) was funny and honest and made the cook run down the street to get us rolls. Good fried clams and onion rings to start. The scallop bisque was delicious, the lobster roll and the scallop roll got raves, and my burger was very tasty. The clam chowder here is great! But for being in the middle of Maine it was a real disappointment to find ONLY Pacific Salmon (which I, personally, find inferior to Atlantic Salmon) and blueberry pie made with those plump flavorless blueberries (again, NOT Maine). It's blueberry season and you can pick wild Maine blueberries off the bushes. Avoid their blueberry pie! The waitresses work hard and do their best to get everyone served. A party of 12 came in unannounced right before us. I figured the wait would be quite long and so was prepared for it. Nonetheless, we didn't have a long wait at all. read more

My family and I enjoyed an absolutely delicious Friday night dinner at 44 Degrees. We arrived near closing time, and weren't sure that the hostess wanted us there, but the service turned out to be very welcoming. My wife had "the best lobster ever" - tender, meaty, and tasting like it had left the ocean only minutes earlier. (We learned that the manager's husband is the restaurant's lobsterman.) My salmon poke bowl was also impeccably fresh. It was seasoned with a sesame ginger sauce - not quite Hawaiian authentic, being served over fried rice, but still scrumptious. The blueberry pie cheesecake (not a typo) was a wonder. We'd return in an instant, if we didn't live 400 miles away. read more

Pay no mind to the outsiders who think service is too slow. If you want fast food, there's a McDonald's in Ellsworth. If you want good food, you've come to the right place, and good food takes time to make to perfection. Maybe you won't get lobster before dinner service, but then that would be like complaining because they don't serve breakfast at 8 P.M. Any true connisseur of fine dining will tell you that there is a menu set for each dinner service, and while Gordon Ramsay wouldn't put his name on 44 North as fine dining, he certainly would not be spitting the food into the waste bin. The prime rib was excellent and the lobster was enough to pass muster with my wife who turns her nose up at most anything that doesn't come to the table exactly as she asked for it. We dined here with a relative who, from the waitstaff comments, is a regular here, albeit a barstool warmer. The burger made our kid happy and he's a tougher customer than anyone I know. I'm extremely tough on incompetent waitstaff, yet I felt no need to be nasty here. The atmosphere was authentic, considering this little jewel sits near the entry to Washington County. The booth we sat in proved difficult due to the warped floor and much of dinner was spent keeping from sliding to the floor. Not all seating was like this. My recommendation, get a table instead of a booth. The lobsters were on display in a tank freshly delivered that very morning. I know the lobsters were fresh because I cannot stand the smell of lobster and with a plate directly across from me, as well as one next to me, I didn't even smell the gamey fishy smell I normally associate with some of the high-end restaurants in Connecticut. I would dine here again without a moment's hesitation. Try it, I'm sure you'll be pleased. I wish I didn't have to give this place one star. It should have zero stars. I can't quite figure out why the place was so busy, because it's been a long time since we had food this bad. And it was the experience of all 7 of us. The haddock was ordered by three of us. All three were overcooked to the point of requiring a knife to cut - which is not a good sign. The special with mango sauce - seemed to have a jar of mango jelly poured on it (yuck). The capers, butter and dill was very dry (not sure how you do that ) Parmesan crusted was not crusted and pretty much inedible. One 12 oz ribeye came out as an 8 oz delmonico. With mashed potatoes when a baked was ordered. "They ran out" - but no one checked to see what the next preference might be (not mashed). The delmonico - not a ribeye went back - came back with a chewy (microwaved?) rib eye. The only two edible items were the prime rib - not bad - and the pot roast. And for all this, we waited about 45 minutes. We won't be back. read more

As a true Mainer, I do gotta say that 44 Degrees North is worse than when when my pet opossum fell into my lit barbecue. I used to think that 44 North was decent due to dining there every once in a while. But then everything changed. I went to 44 North one night with some buddies, and as I walked into the restaurant, I noticed, that although the restaurant was rather busy, there were still a few empty tables. A quick warning to any brave souls who venture into this restaurant, is to avoid the cranky old hostess who was rather rude to me. Instead of telling me it was going to be a bit of a wait, and offering to perhaps seat us at the bar for example, she pretty much told us to get lost. And by the way, my three friends and I were all going to order steaks, so joke's on you, 44 North! read more

Always good and consistent. Excellent service and a nice, low-key atmosphere -- like Milbridge itself. The buffalo chicken quesadilla is always my stand-by, with some crispy fries, of course. The best lunch or dinner that you can buy in the Milbridge area! Some complain that the service is too slow, but if you want fast food then you've come to the wrong place. Everything at 44 North is home-made and delicious, and I'm fine with waiting an extra five minutes for something so delicious. I highly recommend the chicken burger and the chicken ranch quesidilla. They also have a full-service bar if you just want a cold drink after work. read more
