I'll start by saying this was not my first time dining at this establishment. The ambiance was great although the staff was hellbent on having guests remove their hats as it is their policy but it was 25 degrees outside and we were seated by the door. The service was not bad but it was not the greatest. Our food came out in intervals, and we were probably the last party to be seated. It was rather a large party of 11 and that has to be taken into account. I would say no one in our party was happy with the main courses, the appetizers were great especially the oyster mushrooms, the crab cake appetizer and my salad was delectable and presented exceptionally well. I'm not sure if restaurant week is the reason the ball was dropped but 456 definitely gets a poor grade for this Birthday outing. I ordered Rockfish with mashed potatoes and spinach. The rockfish was prepared very well but the sides were cold, and my spinach was so salty as was everyone else's that I couldn't eat it and it was too late to go back-and-forth with the kitchen to correct the meal. With this review, I wish I could give them a half a star. Not counting them out but I know I'll be looking for an award winning dining experience if I do decide to return. read more

While in town on business, I stopped by for a casual dinner at the bar. The bartender was impeccably courteous and friendly. Big plus there. Other local restaurants could learn something. The crab cake, crusted in potato chips, was surprisingly enjoyed with just the right amount of crunch and was, of course, loaded with crab and not filler. Blackened scallops (a la carte) were moist and meaty. The She Crab soup was full of chunk of crab, but was a touch bland and needed a little something something. Or, it could be that I'm just spoiled by Maryland crab soup. Overall, a really good meal. I'll definitely return in hopes of being able to give that fifth star. read more

Our meal was delicious , our server was fun and the atmosphere felt intimate for our evening. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and were not disappointed! They were hot and golden and the aioli was so good! My wife and I weren't starving so I ordered a Caesar salad which is hit or miss anywhere imo. Here it came out kind of dry but our server was quick to get me a side of additional dressing. We ordered an entree off the friday night special menu, rockfish wrapped in prosciutto over a huge bed of couscous that was cooked with sautéed spinach and roasted red peppers and a white wine reduction around. What a great place for Sunday brunch. Very smooth jazzy saxaphone music playing during a great meal. Dana was excellent serving our group of five. We all thought the eggs benedict was excellent. The dress code is casual but gentlemen be warned, no hats permitted. The Crab Norfolk Omelette was probably one of the best seafood omelettes I've ever eaten. No fillers, very tasty and covered with a delicious sauce. The potatoes and English muffin complimented were out shined by the omelette. They have a no hat policy and it was entirely too cold inside of 456 Fish restaurant. Our party ordered around 8:45 pm and we didn't get our food until around 10:15-10:30pm. came here to have dinner pre-show- ordered two appetizers- the fried oysters were decent to good BUT the calamari was a barely edible fishy soggy disaster- they replaced it with a mediocre baked feta dish. where we really took issue was the fact we waited almost an hour for our main course which FINALLY brought to the table (after asking and asking) 14 minutes prior to when we had to be in our seats for our show a block away. Then it took then another 8 minutes to get the manager since we obviously were nor going to eat any of the UNBELIEVABLY late main course - we told then we wanted the check so we wouldn't be TOO late for our show (which they knew about from the start and had MORE than enough time to make) AND they were even late with that. 456 Fish has been on our list for a while. We both love seafood, so when my husband was actually home for a few weeks we decided to finally check it out. We did go during Norfolk Resturant week, my husband orderd from the restaurant week menu, I ordered off the regular menu. We started with the fired calamari, it was delicious. It was seasoned very well beyone just salt and pepper and it had a nice kick to it. The garlic aioli they provided as one of the side dipping sauces complimented it perfectly. The marinara sauce we both could have done without. It didnt have much flavour or add to the dish. My husband had the shrimp and grits off the restaurant week menu. The grits were undercooked and still crunchy. The had caked together and when you cut in some of the inside was still dry and powdery. Grits are suppose to be smooth and creamy, sadly this was none of those things. And the garlic, oh my, it overpowered everything else on the dish. I love garlic, we both do, but this was a little more than to much. He ended up skipping on most of his meal and instead eating up most of the delicious lobster mac and cheese. The lobster mac and cheese had to have been one of the top 3 we have ever tried! It was so creamy and savoury. The cheese wad so good each bit was as delicious as the last. The big chunks of lobster stood out and gave it an exellent flavour. We will go back for sure just for more of the mac and cheese. I had the Mahi served with spinach and mash. It was delicious. The dish was almost perfect except for a spicy sauce that wasn't needed. But I loved every single bit. Each element of the dish, together or separate was excellent. We don't usually get dessert, but as it came with the restaurant week we got the lemon cake. It was a little dry, but nice to have something sweet at the end. We will be going back to try other dishes for sure, just not the shrimp and grits. read more

I've been sitting thinking about why I wouldn't give 5 stars and I think the reason is because I'd need to go again. It was VERY good, but not exceptional. I will say, I had a pleasant time. This place isn't necessarily a chill, walk in environment in casual wear. It's a bit upscale. And that's definitely reflected in the prices. We came here with our 5 year old and they surprisingly did have a kids menu. I got a glass of red wine, the boyfriend got sweet tea, and our boy got a Shirley temple. Mainly because they didn't really have juice. Except maybe pineapple and cranberry- for mixing cocktails. We ordered the calamari, mahi with coconut risotto, seared tuna, and fried shrimp and fries. For a kids order, the shrimp and fries were plentiful- huuuuge order and well plated. It was also super good (of course I tried some!). The calamari was "award winning" and I believe that. I wish there were tentacles. Only rings. But! Perfectly battered, great seasoning, and the calamari was soooo tender it almost melts in your mouth. The mahi was awesome. Thick, delicious, and very flavorful; especially with this fruit confit-type sauce that came on the side to compliment the fish. There was a big fried slice of plantain in the middle as garnish and it was very good. The tuna was also very good, seared perfectly and perfectly pink in the middle over homemade succotash, creamy mashed potatoes, and just deliciousness all around. The decor of the place was so delightful. It brought you back to this 1940's era with old pictures of historic Norfolk all around. Dark wood and a beautiful enclosed water fountain in the middle. My favorite part was the ceiling fans. 8ish fans throughout that were all belt driven from one motor. I'm guessing it's like how they did fans back in the day. Ornamental beautiful fans as well. Our server was VERY attentive, and we never went without. He was kind, professional, and on top of his game. Overall, a great experience. One more trip in and I think I'll update it to 5 stars. We came here tonight and sat outside. It was a perfect summer evening to do so! We were immediately greeted by the hostess and I'm assuming the manager. They were both so friendly! Our server, Steve was just as pleasant. He didn't linger too long or make us feel forgotten outside. I ordered the she crab soup. Let me just say, this is one of the few places that do it right. The lump crab meat filled me up that I barely made a dent in my dinner. My boyfriend ordered the salmon - While it is an easy protein, it's not always a good one depending on where you go. That wasn't the case here. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. I ordered the braised lamb shank (special). The amount of food on my plate surprised me. The mashed potatoes and broccolini that came with my dinner were both perfectly cooked as well. The dinner was amazing to say the least and the service was well above average. It's a beautiful atmosphere for a socially distanced date-night. They do have a dress code and I love that they adhere to it. It doesn't make me feel too overdressed. I am sad to say I was quite disappointed with my experience at 456 Fish. My boyfriend and I went for their date night on Wednesday (two entrees and a bottle of wine for $55!). We were seated quickly near the bar for Happy Hour and we informed them we would be staying for their date night special. Our server greeted us and we put in a drink order. We received our first round fairly quickly. The drinks were both decent. After the first round, however, all efficiency ceased. The restaurant was not very crowded, but we couldn't seem to get our servers attention. We eventually noticed he was only serving people at the bar. Furthermore, the table in front of us who arrived after us had at least two rounds of drink and their entrees while we were still waiting. We ended up waiting 30+ minutes before a second server finally came around. The server informed us there was a miscommunication and our table wasn't on anyone's radar for a period of time. After putting in our second drink order, we again didn't receive our drinks or service for several minutes. We also were not sure if we needed to move tables to meet our 5:30 reservation. Around 6:15, the second server finally came back over at which point we said we no longer wanted to stay for dinner due to the slow service. The manager then came by and said there was a mix up. He offered to pay for our two rounds of happy hour drinks and to ensure our meal order was put in promptly. I do give them credit for this kind gesture. The second server was great and she tried to do her best to redeem our experience. By the time we got our food, we had been at the restaurant for close to an hour and a half (which would be totally understandable if we didn't have a reservation and if the restaurant was crowded). My boyfriend ordered their ahi tuna and I ordered a gluten free penne pasta. The food was fine - nothing to write home about, but at least fresh and warm. My boyfriend's tuna was overcooked and my pasta was definitely something I could have easily made at home. All in all we were not impressed and won't be returning. However, I will say my sister and brother in law went the week before us and experience excellent service and good food. It may be somewhat of a hit or miss. At this point I can't recommend though until there is some consistency. read more

My first visit to 456 Fish was Sunday evening before a show at Chrysler Hall. I had heard the food was delicious so my friend and I were very excited to try it out. Boy were we disappointed! The food was truly terrible. I ordered the crab cakes with mashed potatoes and spinach, took a couple bites of each and left the rest on the plate. My friend ordered the chicken with mushroom sauce and the sauce tasted like water. ZERO seasoning was used in the preparation of the food. So we asked for salt and pepper, we got a salt shaker with salt so clumpy we couldn't get one grain of salt out so we just left our plates full of food. The service was terribly slow and we almost missed the beginning of the show we were seeing so we didn't even have time to complain to the manager. To top off the horrible experience, we both were violently ill all night from food poisoning or something of that nature. If I could give zero stars, I would. The table beside us would agree since I heard them complaining to the manager that they had been waiting over an hour for their food to come to the table and were about to miss the show. read more

Overall disappointing. We came for Happy Hour but that was canceled because it was a "theater night ". For the same reason there was only a "reduced " menu. Although the room was half empty, we often had to wait quite a bit to get any attention from the waitstaff - including getting water refilled. But the real bummer was the food - the calamari were boring and the $18 crabcake appetizer was mostly filler. First of all, I didn't realize this was considered a fancy place. I always feel awkward when people ask us if we have reservations but upon looking around, the place is actually dead, lol. We were kind of under-dressed, so I think the service was a little awkward at first until our server realized we were ordering alcohol with our food. At least the dining area and bathrooms were clean. We began with she crab soup and some crostini for the table. The soup was great because of the large crab chunks, but dipping the buttery, crisp crostini in the soup was phenomenal. The sangrias were alright in taste and standard for the price. Everyone at the table loved what they ordered. I shared a crab stuffed flounder entree with my boyfriend, and we ended up having leftovers. The asparagus was salt & peppered and cooked nicely- not too soft but not too hard. The mashed potatoes were amazing and garlicky. The crab was delicious, and the flounder was tender. As I began to eat my dish which was Flounder stuffed with crab... my fourth bite I felt a stringy something on my lip...as I pulled it to my disgust it was a long brown hair!! I felt like I could have thrown up right there!! My nephew called the server over to let them know and they took the plate and apologized. Now this goes without saying....hair nets are cheap and should be mandatory....there is NO way you patronize a restaurant and have hair intertwined in your food! We went before a show at Chrysler. Nice ambiance, good food and service. As it gets busier, service slows. Ordered a top shelf Tanqueray extra dirty martini straight up. Delicious. The bartender does an excellent job. This dinner was a pre-birthday celebration for my husband so we sampled appetizers. We had 2 she crab soups, an appetizer crab cake, and calamari. All fresh and prepared well. Then, we decided to order salads. My husband got the beet and goat cheese which I thought was delicious. I got the seafood Cobb which is shrimp, lump crab, bacon, egg, lettuce, lime vinaigrette. Except it wasn't dressed. At all. Not one drop of dressing. Here is where service faltered. We were there from about 5:30 and now it was 7 and no one really came by to ask about drinks or how we were doing during the past 30 minutes. So as the late afternoon turned into evening, everything really slowed down. After 10 minutes, my husband finally flagged down a server. I told the server the salad was naked, that I desperately needed some dressing. He told me he'd let the manager know. (A rather knee jerk reaction to a pretty neutral and reasonable request). I said no, I just need the dressing so I can actually eat it. Then, he listed off some dressings and I had to ask him, well, what dressing should have come with it in the first place? I want that. It was an unnecessarily frustrating exchange. My husband thought I was exaggerating that it wasn't dressed so he tried it and realized, yup, they forgot the dressing all together. I did finally get the lime cilantro dressing and it did improve the salad tremendously. (Raw lettuce out of a bag is not very appetizing.) By this point, we ran out of time for dessert because staff could not keep up with customers and we had a show to catch. Overall, nice place with good seafood and excellent martinis. Delicious seafood and great servers. The atmosphere was relaxing and intimate. Great place for a date. I requested virgin drinks and the server recommended a Mojito mocktails served with orange slices and strawberries, it was surprisingly very good given that it was just created on the spot! Everything served was very good from their starter sourdough bread, appetizers, main course and dessert. We had the spinach crab dip, it was good. I had the colossal crab stuffed jumbo flounder served with mashed potatoes, it was very good. Valet out front on show night was a bit slow but everyone arrives at same time so for the one man show he was hustling just fine. If you pay/tip ahead and tell him you are going to the show he usually tells you where your car is parked and let's you keep the keys so when you get out no long wait line for getting your car. It works great. As for the restaurant, for a bite to eat and drinks once again on show night, I would highly recommend reservations. We were seated promptly, and the waiter came by within 5 minutes delivering water and introduced himself. They created an insert Theatre menu which highlights choices for quick kitchen turnover and great sampler of their main menu. You are not limited to this but timing is everything. It is not a pre fix menu price. The food here is consistently great, and it arrived warm and ready for the palate. The crab cake should've had more lump meat then shredded but the plus side is there is barely any filler and was made in house. I look forward to either the crab cakes or the grouper entree when I come to this place and was glad to see them on the menu still. This time I added a dessert.. the Tiramisu and those lady fingers were soaked splendidly. The restaurant was packed with patrons and filled between 5p and 530p. So, It was nice to see the GM active in helping the restaurant with bussing, getting menus, addressing issues of the bar for things they needed to keep the drinks flowing. John Taffer would give this place a thumbs up. Cameron was our waiter as the bartender who usually serves the bar seating couldn't leave his mixology station. Despite his busy work space he kept interacting and smiling all the while he was working which brings a positive energy to the dining out experience. Cameron was very attentive but not intrusive. He made sure to bring our dessert in a timely manner and we left with 30 minutes to spare to walk over to Chrysler Hall. read more

4 5 6 fish was one of our favorite resteraunts in Norfolk to Visit while visiting the tidewater. After a long 6 hour drive from Northern Virginia to the beach and making a reservation.... We were met by a female hostess who informed us our attire was not appropriate for the resteraunt... completely confused as I have said we frequent the resteraunt often while visiting... we asked for the manager who informed us no "Athleticwear" was permitted and they had tightened up on their dress code. My mother had an Adidas suit on...mind you we were traveling so we had on relaxed wear... but we were confused because this is what she travels in and the last time we patronized the resteraunt during COVID she had the EXACT same outfit on... now NO ONE in the resteraunt was dressed fancy at all, not a single person. Now interestingly enough.. they offered to seat us outside... the issue was that it was extremely cold. Second issue is while making the reservation over the phone that should have been communicated ESPECIALLY if the policy had changed. At best they should have let us patronize the resteraunt... will not be returning. If there is an option to post a picture im going to post my family eating at 4 5 6 with my mother in the SAME outfit the next time we were refused to be seated for. Eh...I may be in the minority here, but I didn't find anything particularly impressive about the food at 456. They were still serving brunch when we stopped in at 1:00PM on Sunday. I ordered the potato-chip encrusted crab cake sandwich with home fries because, well how often do see that on a menu? Unfortunately when it arrived, it wasn't at all what I had expected. The picture in my head: a sizable, lumpy crab cake coated with crushed potato chips, almost as fine as breadcrumb but enough to give that potato chip crunch. What I got: a not-so-sizable crab cake covered in a hard shell of near-burnt potato chips that were too big for the cake itself. The crab cake was OK once you peeled away the pieces of potato chips, but there was nothing particularly interesting about the taste. The aioli sauce helped. Good aioli! The home fries were also pretty average, made with red and yellow peppers and onions that were a bit overcooked and nearly unnoticeable. Considering the 4-star reviews on Yelp, I was surprised (and disappointed) at how underwhelming the food was. Maybe the chef was having an off-day, maybe brunch just isn't their thing. We came here for dinner on July 4th with some friends. We arrived at about 6PM and the restaurant was very bare.. there was only one other patron dining in and I was a little hesitant to try the place but I read some good reviews about the food. I would consider this place a "find dining" establishment or one that should be considered for date night and intimate outings. So when more than half our group was wearing shorts and a t shirt I was a little afraid they would decline us service.. but we had no issues! We had the calamari to start ourselves off which I thought was really good; it was lightly fried, seasoned well and the calamari itself was soft/chewy but not tough. The complimentary bread they had was really delicious as well, especially their sample of different butters they had that day which included some house made sweet butter. I ordered the fried soft shell crabs and my fiance ordered the baked lobster mac and cheese. I enjoyed my crabs but it wasn't anything spectacular as far as how they prepare it or the seasonings they used. I sampled everyone's dishes but I liked it all but nothing really stood out for me. We didn't know that this restaurant had their own parking lot so we parked at the mall and walked all the way here.. I think the food was good and the prices were pretty standard for their seafood offerings. Our waitress was ok but she had a serious demeanor and or vibe. I came in with a large work group for dinner on a Friday night. Between all of us we probably ordered half the menu so we got to try a lot of stuff. The "award winning" calamari wasn't anything special. I've much better at other places. It wasn't bad but I don't know who the judges were to give it an award. I ordered the Ribeye special that came with lobster mac and cheese and was topped with crab. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well, no pink at all in the center. The chef must have fallen asleep at the wheel or something. I sent it back and asked for another to be cooked properly. Ten minutes later the manager came back and said they didn't have anymore ribeyes left and they offered me a flat iron steak prepared the same way. They also had a filet on the menu which they should have offered me. By the time the second steak came out the rest of the group was done eating. This second steak was still over cooked! Not as overcooked as the first but still not medium rare. I ate it anyway since everyone was already done. There was no visible lobster or crab in the dish either! I guess I should have known better than to order a steak at a seafood place. My coworkers said their meals were good, nothing earth shattering, so I'll give them two stars but if I was there solo it would be one. By the time I finished this I was too full for dessert. I had a bite of my girlfriend's grouper and my friend's flat iron steak. I can't say I was a fan. The crab Dessert - chocolate mousse served in a martini glass. YESSSSSSSSSAAAAA. This was a game changer. I was done in less than a minute. You MUST order this. Nuff said. And the best part of this place is the heater pounding out air as soon as you walk inside. With it being 20 degrees outside, this is a very warm welcome to a good restaurant. read more

*3.5 star review* I honestly thought the place was just okay. It had old school decor which was nice. I forgot our servers name but she was very nice and attentive. The crab cake appetizer we ordered was delicious. The scoop of potato salad it came with was too tangy for me. Perhaps it was mustard or relish. For my entree I ordered the seafood saffron rice bowl which looks delicious was it was too salty for me. It tasted like it was only seasoned with salt. My husband ordered the crab stuffed fish. We didn't see any crab at all and he said his fish was bland. I may or may not go back to try other things. I also found it odd that the other reviews state they are very strict on proper attire and no hats etc, but I saw a man literally dressed in a Santa hat and a house robe inside there. Nothing else. Service was really good. The food was good yet not amazing. I had the $35 restaurant week menu: she crab soup, grouper and rainbow sherbet. The she crab soup was a little saltier than I like and only had a few lumps of crab. It was well spiced and not too creamy. The grouper was well seasoned and I liked the veggies it came with. The plantain, albeit delicious on its own and well cooked, was way too sweet to accompany the fish though. I wasn't a fan of the pairing. I would have preferred something less strong so that the grouper could have reigned supreme. The sherbet tasted like fresh straight out of the back of the freezer. The husband and I came her for restaurant week on a double date. We had made a reservation online the day before and our table was already prepped for our arrival. We got to our table and our coats were taken up front for coat check for us - I was starting to feel fancy with that. Our waitress took our drink order - a bottle of wine. She was great to deal with the fact we were not too sure on what to order and just how to taste the wine right after it is opened to see if we liked it. Lesson learned for all of us. Restaurant week had a 3 course menu so I'll follow how it went: First Course: Husband and I both had the she crab soup. I enjoyed the flavor and there was a good amount of crab meat chunks. I did not enjoy that the soup was more on the warm side than hot. My soup could probably use about 15 to 30 seconds in a microwave to heat it up, but maybe they want to ensure we're not burning our mouths? It was a pretty cold day so I expected some hot soup. Second Course: I got the flat iron steak with some mashed potatoes, fried onions, and sautéed asparagus. I had asked for my steak to be medium rare, but found it more to be medium to medium well once it got to me. No big deal though there were some tough spots to cut. Everything else on my plate was great. The sautéed asparagus was cooked just right since I had no trouble cutting that even with my spoon - I'm filipino so I cut with a spoon. Third Course: The whole table ordered chocolate mousse. It was divine. Very rich in flavor yet light in texture. There was also a couple blueberries and blackberries in there as well. Overall, I definitely felt we got a great deal with the restaurant week menu. A few issues in maybe the temperature of my food, but we got great service and had a great time. O man o man. I was one excited dude to finally have the opportunity to try this restaurant after hearing so many "unbelievable" things about it. Perhaps it was the hype, but I wasn't as thrilled with my food as other people were. Here's why: 1. Their famous crab cakes had a special sauce that they mention all over their menu. It turns out that these cakes were spicy... with wasabi. Sorry, not my cup of tea. On the upside, though, they weren't stingy with the crab in the cakes... just too bad the taste was off. 2. The only non seafood items on the menu were the angel hair pasta and the steak. Don't get me wrong, I came here for seafood, but in an effort to try everything, a friend and I chose to have a steak as well. Most seafood restaurants try to have a non seafood dish on their menu and often times steak is one of those. Especially for a high end restaurant, they try to make all their dishes taste good. Unfortunately, that's not true with their steak. We had ordered a medium rare and the first steak came back as a well done steak. Ok, simple mistake. They kindly take the steak back and bring another one that is rarer... but not quite medium rare. This time, there is no glaze on the steak and it turns out that the quality of steak was sub par as well. It was just tough. Service here was spectacular. I am going to give credit where it's deserved. They were very quick to help us out with our issues and even gave us a free dessert which was quite kind of them. I also had a beer battered soft shell crab. I've had it before at other restaurants and it's very hard to do well. The dish they had was A-OK. Nothing spectacular, but not bad at all. The best part of the meal was probably the dessert. Their creme brulee was not overly sweet and the bread pudding was actually quite flavorful especially with the side of ice cream. They have parking there next to the restaurant and when it gets busy they can valet it. They weren't particularly busy on a Friday evening when I went, but it was also probably because most people had gone away from town for summer vacation. If someone really wanted to go here I would probably go with them and just avoid the steak and crab cakes, but it wouldn't be a restaurant that I would say is a "must" try. It's possible that I just ordered the wrong things, so I want to be clear that I am not criticizing the entire restaurant, but at least from what I ordered, I didn't not leave with as good of an impression as some of my other fellow yelpers here. read more

High quality service, high quality food!!! Nothing much to do in Norfolk except for the restaurants in downtown. I'm glad I utilized Yelp to help narrow down the choices. And I agree with the other reviewers about this place. Nice establishment, classy wood chairs and tables, fancy water falls that separates the bar and the dining room. Antique like overhead fans powered by a series of conveyor belts. Due Torre '09 Pinot Grigio- Nice, crisp and light wine from Italy. Sorry I'm not a wine connoisseur, but it was good. Crab Cocktail Norfolk - one of their signature appetizers. Served with cocktail sauce, melted butter and lemon. Very filling, yum yum. See pics for visual representation. Angel hair pasta with grilled tuna- Again superbly done. Tuna was firm and cooked to my satisfaction, medium rare. Pineapple Upside Down Martini - Stoli vanilla vodka, amaretto, pineapple juice, with a grenadine sink. Sweet and slightly bitter. Again a fufu drink that I enjoyed. 456 Ganashe - molten lava chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and raspberry glaze. Yum, and I feel super-fluffy. Stuffed and satisfied for coming here.
