As a long time fan and regular customer, I was incredibly disappointed to see it transform from great coffee house to boutique doughnut shop, losing the best of it's spirit, its artisanal coffee offerings. The best cup of coffee is made on the spot and on demand because it's the only way to adequately extract the subtleties of the roast into the brew. It's disingenuous for the baristas to claim otherwise, and mentions of how inconsistent the Kalita and the syphon were sound like excuses for overworked or underprepared baristas, not actual problems with the brew methods. Perhaps customers complained about the waiting times, though I don't see a reason why they couldn't keep both drip and pour-over/vacuum (as has been the case for much of their history) read more

This review is not for the coffee or food, but mainly the service I received while I was there. I went to 49th Parallel to buy two of their cute latte cups as a Christmas gift for someone. While paying, I asked the woman behind the till if I could get a gift receipt and she said I could. So I paid with my credit card, took the 2 receipts I was handed and left. After leaving, I realized that there was no gift receipt given to me (1 was the credit card slip and the other was the actual receipt). I drove back to the store and asked the same girl about the gift receipt. She said they don't have any gift receipts, which was confusing to me because I had asked PRIOR to paying for anything. Anyhow, she began to ask her managers about it and so I went over to speak with them. They didn't have any sort of return policy put in place and told me that the person could probably return the cups as long as they had the original receipt. Usually, when you pay with credit card, in order to do a return, you would need the same credit card that was used. Because this was a gift, I wanted to make sure that the person could return it with the receipt and a different credit (since they wouldn't have mine). Their response? "That's a bit more complicated. We'll just deal with it when that happens. I'm sure they won't return it anyways." I'm definitely not satisfied with this answer and a little choked that the two managers who were there couldn't have handled it better. I know this place is supposed to be laidback and chill but this seemed extremely unprofessional to me and has turned me off from purchasing there again. That isn't to say I won't go there for the coffee or donuts, but I'll probably refrain from buying any of their non-edible products unless it is for strictly for myself. read more

I returned to my hometown Vancouver for a visit last month, and was excited to be staying within walking distance of an old haunt, 49th parallel. After massive build-up to try excellent coffee, i was sadly disappointed. The variety of coffee I tried - macchiato, espresso and finally gave up for a regular drip - all tasted burnt and the donuts were essentially pieces of toast with sugar on top (i.e. too bready). Three days of this, I gave up and saved my morning coffee runs for the excellent roasters in Gastown (even Culprit around the corner tasted better) and Cartems. After 3 years of being away, this local coffee shop got too commercial and became too focussed serving okay pulls in pails of milk. :( read more

Im not sure how many stars i should give 49th parallel. in terms of coffee, i find it overly acidic and strong... (i have tried everything.....coffee, americano, latte but i just cant stomach it)...yet i keep coming back because of the location/crowd/atmosphere and kits loyalty. I also preferred the old location down the street on fourth (smaller, more intimate vibe) but the new size is much better and less squishy. Also not overly a fan of the new 'theme'...I get that they are going for the beach shack look, but in terms of design, they could have amped it up and paid a bit more attention to detail. i truly hope they get some proper tables for the patio, balancing coffee on stools is a bit uncomfortable and have to say not the most elegant way to drink. i do however love that the now have wifi, the donuts and overall experience... i just wish i could drink the coffee without a coffee headache. but heck the location and busy factor will keep me coming back read more

I have been a regular customer at their old location, prior to their move around the corner. Their time has passed as a quality coffee location within a crowded Vancouver market. Most recent latte was terrible: weak, utter lack of flavour, overall one of the two worst lattes I have ever consumed (shared spot with a place in Ketchikan, Alaska, but that's another review for another time). Summary: 49th Parallel is now just another overpriced, 'taking themselves too seriously' coffee seller. The second star is only for the convenient location for Kits dwellers. From here on, it is Elysian, far better coffee. read more

I LOVE this place. Best doughnuts, best coffee and awesome for meeting with friends for a chat. The barista's know how to make an awesome cup of coffee and for the huge line-ups they keep the coffee coming out at a decent pace. I use to work a job that requires me to make lattes and the like and I can tell you that is not an easy accomplishment. They're also pretty friendly in a very Vancouver laid-back sort of way. It's a bit of a travel for me to get there as I don't have access to a car a lot of the time, but if I'm in Kitsilano, this is a must for me. read more

I love this cafe for doughnuts and their homemade iced tea. There is almost always a line out the door but it is definitely worth it. If you want to get a specific doughnut arrive around 10:45. The breakfast pastries will be out and the doughnuts will be fresh. Their peanut butter and jelly remix and their sourdoughnut are classics. read more

Wow I love this place. I probably could rant on for hours on how great this coffee shop is. If you haven't been it's defiantly a must go to place! Their coffee drinks are made with fresh beans and they put a cute milk design on the lattes/cappuccinos. The staff is young, fun and lively and try to fulfill everyone's needs. It's in a superb location because after your lovely coffee break you can then go for a walk on the beach, shop, or enjoy the rest of your day. However the number one reason why I love this place is because they serve Lucky's donuts. If you live in Vancouver you know exactly what Lucky's donuts are. They're cool flavoured donuts that are made fresh every morning. My favorite is any type with chocolate. I've had the Oreo one (probably the most fattest donut but that's alright because it's the best!) and I also like the simple chocolate with sprinkles. It's great to come to this coffee shop and order a donut and drink. If you're visiting from Vancouver I really recommend coming here to have the ultimate Vancouver experience. read more

Well the ambiance is picturesque, however it's not remotely functional. It seems as if a designer conceptualized it for a magazine cover, but not people ordering coffee and doughnuts. Speaking of doughnuts, Lucky's Doughnuts (at that location) are the best part of the cafe (aside from curb appeal), and you can never go wrong regardless of what you order. The coffee on the other hand is hit and miss, always great latte art but taste varies depending on the barista and time. One thing to note, espresso probably the worst part of the cafe. I honestly would give it a 3.5, but the overall setting and patio (regardless of nonfunctional bar and ordering), pops the score up to a shaky 4/5. read more

Super friendly and quick staff. They have a fabulous selection of unique doughnuts and flavourful drinks. My favourite is the hot chocolate but unfortunately you can only buy it in a small size, always leaving you wanting more. There's always a (fast moving) lineup of return patrons and the tables are full of friends hanging out or people working away on their laptops. While it's somewhat difficult to find a seat sometimes, it speaks to what a nice venue and good product this location has. read more

49th Parallel is the best in Canada as far as I'm concerned, and their location here is the best cafe in Kits. Clean, and it's always packed, but still lots of seating. Spotless bathrooms. Friendly staff. Amazing doughnuts if that your thing but if you're just in it for the coffee then no better place to get a perfectly pulled espresso. Cappuccinos with just the right temperature and that velvety texture that's an absolute necessity. read more

49th Parallel is my absolute favorite Kits coffee shop and probably my number 2 in the city (after Kafka's on Main and Broadway). There's always a line but the service is very fast, so even if there are l twice as many people as at Starbucks down the street I guarantee you'll have your drink in half the time. Best iced chai lattes I've ever had. Great espresso too. I know people come here for the doughnuts, but I have to say the croissants here are what does it for me. read more

I LOVE 49th Parallel's coffee! Definitely the best coffee shop in Vancouver. Coffee is smooth and strong and not sour nor burnt. Just the way I like it.
