I tried 49th state while walking around looking for lunch. It was good food and relaxed atmosphere, great spot!

Our family stopped in after our cruise shuttle had dropped us off. They were very busy but we were still seated relatively soon. The patio areas have a great overlook of Anchorage with lots of military and sea plane fly overs. The food was a great Alaskan send off- ordered the Halibut and chips and the salmon salad. Both were great tasting with good portion sizes for the price. Worth the stop! read more

Sorry to say I'm struggling to see why everyone is raving about the 49th State brewery. In a bit of a disorganized hosting system, we were told a 30 minute wait. It was closer to an hour. While not happy, I get that. Point is, call for reservations. I personally do like the decor. Especially, the view. But that's due to the Alaskan skyline. Honestly, the reason we came was to be the tie-breaker for our friends. One couple claimed this Jack fruit appetizer was the greatest thing since the invention of the bread slicer, the other said it had a nasty over bearing spice. We didn't even see it on the menu so we went with the Pan fried Brussels sprouts instead. Solid choice. I would give the Tuna Nachos and the Icepick Wedge a B, but the pizza and the Yak burger a D for disappointment. I ordered the burger medium-rare (it's easy to over-cook game like yak, bison, etc.), they brought it out closer to medium well. It was shot. Not literally, figuratively. Dry, chewy leather meat. Flavour was still there, but hidden. The pizza was a disaster. You shouldn't order pizza in a joint like this, anyway. The crust was super doughy with no taste. Just don't order pizza. On the other hand, if you have it on your menu, make it well. Use fresh ingredients and care about the finished product or drop it. I'm not a great connoisseur of beers but they have a decent selection that's a bit different from everyone else. Expense is my biggest issue. Came for lunch around 12p on a weekday. Plenty of seating in the main area, upstairs and rooftop decks. When we left closer to 2p all three floors were pretty full but seating still available. It's a big place! It includes another outdoors self seating area with picnic type tables, where Wild Scoops has an ice cream stand and 49th State has some hot dogs and beer. The Bering sea King Crab market price is $130 for the entree (two sides) but you can get 1lb of legs for $100 as an add-on. Since we had the same crab the night before we opted for pizza and sandwich. The crab grilled cheese was nice and filling and comes with a seafood chowder! Quite nice and hearty. The fireweed pizza is a good combo of sweet and savory. The arugula nicely complements the roasted garlic and sausage. Great views if you opt for the 2nd level or rooftop! The staff was pretty attentive at lunch at first I feared they were "over staffed" but apparently they needed everyone once it got busy! read more

I stopped in for a quick weekday lunch and appreciated being able to choose my own seat on the first floor. It is something I always value when dining out. Being able to settle in where you're most comfortable makes the experience feel more relaxed right from the start. The menu is impressively large with a variety of eclectic options and pub favorites. I was surprised to see a tuna poke bowl listed. Poke is one of my favorites, so I decided to give it a try. When the dish arrived, it looked nice. It was colorful and thoughtfully arranged, with each component in its own section around the bowl. It included wakame salad, mango chutney, avocado, cabbage, edamame, and rice, with a generous portion of tuna. The tuna was the highlight. It was tender and full of flavor. The rice, however, could have used a bit more attention. It was on the dry side and didn't carry much flavor, which made it a less cohesive base for the rest of the bowl. Some light seasoning or a touch more moisture could really tie the whole dish together. I'm still undecided on the vinegar in the cabbage and the cinnamon notes in the chutney. Those bold flavors might just come down to my personal preference. Either way, I appreciated the creativity behind the components. The service was attentive and friendly, even during the busy lunch rush. The space has a lively energy, which did make it a bit loud, but it felt like a sign of a place that is loved by its customers. There's also a second-floor seating area and an outdoor seating area that overlooks the Ship Creek drainage, which would be lovely on a nice sunny day. This spot has a lot going for it. This is my first time Alaska actually having time to explore outside of the airport. I had certain expectations of what i thought Alaska was supposed to be like in my mind. And this little part of Anchorage was nothing like that. Really was imaging backwoods, dive bars, and wild moose and other large game animals running around. 49th State Brewing was recommended to someone in my party and im glad we went. It was a chilly Wednesday morning, and we were able to get a spot but this cool indoor fire place which provided more warmth than you would think. As we are in Alaska i wanted to try something different, so i went with the YAK Burger. As someone who doesn't eat Yak or other speciality animals, the burger was very tasty, but i would have been more than satisfied with beef. Overall the food is very good, vibes and atmosphere are up, and the staff were all friendly and attentive. read more

Ironically, I did not go for the yak burger but some halibut. Great flavor with a crispy top. My dining companion had the yak and enjoyed it. The pup creates the Anchorage pub ambiance. This place is fun! Big open space and plenty of places to sit. The drinks are yummy too which is a plus. We started with a pretzel. The pretzel itself was sooooo good, but the cheese lacked in flavor. I then had a burger which was very good. Nice and juicy and my fries were yummy. My husband had the elk burger which he loved, it was just a little overcooked. His tater tots weren't good at all and they went uneaten. Our server Tearson was very helpful and friendly. Probably the best restaurant we tried in Anchorage. It has local amazing seafood in dishes that aren't the same ole same old that you're used to seeing. The crab jalapeño poppers were phenomenal. And the chowder was exactly what you hoped for. Creamy, hearty and the right amount of chunky fresh seafood. My friends LOVED their King Crabby Grilled Cheese. It was so so good. The fish and chips were something we had been craving the whole time but never could get our hands on. And they didn't disappoint. Buttery, salty with a nice crunch. We all pretty much shared our delicious dishes and wish we had come here sooner. (We were leaving to home that same day). I would totally have visited this place twice. Drinks for our group came out, but my N/A IPA kept seemed to be missing. I asked about my drink twice and finally got told that they were out of it and didn't have another N/A beer. Also missing was my beer cheese and chips appetizer. Turns out that the lady that helped deliver the appetizers had given it to another member in the group who had started on it and then pushed it forward a little once I think he recognized that it wasn't his. When I asked about it, I was told that that plate was mine and an effort was made to get that to me, putting me in an awkward position of nonverbally refusing this dish that was 10-15 minutes old and already started by the other guest. My discontent was at least recognized and I was offered a replacement, which I accepted. Related to this, there was a lady who helped deliver the appetizers who didn't seem to possess the faculties and/or training to deliver food. Of the 3 plates that came out, only one made it to the right spot and no effort was made to verify. The beer cheese and chips were great once I got the replacement, but by then it was coming out with the main course. The Baja steak salad was really good with the exception of the steak, which seemed to be low quality without a marinade or seasoning. As part of email receipt, there was a place to click on stars to provide feedback. A little over two hours after leaving, it already said: "You already left feedback for this experience or too much time has passed." The 3% service charge on top of the 18% gratuity I presume is for credit card use. This doesn't seem like much of a cash business. I think it would be better to build that into the prices. read more

The food here was yummy! I got the fish tacos and loved it, the chips were fresh and warm and delicious! The service was also pretty great, and they were super fast and friendly despite how busy it was. Towards the end our server did disappear and it took quite long to pay our tab. The best fish and chips I've ever had! Delicious halibut, lightly battered and not greasy. Crispy, well seasoned fries as well. I wanted to come back for another meal here because of how much I enjoyed the fish! Also ordered poke nachos, which were tasty as well. Fresh fish and flavorful toppings. The Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese was huge. Blueberry vodka cocktail was unique and went down smoothly. First floor seating is first come first serve and includes tables and bar seating. Service was good. We stopped on for a late lunch. There were four of us, we tried the Yak burger and it definitely was not a beef flavor but was distinct and tasty being a little sweet. The crab grilled cheese was good and full of crab as well as buttery. I had the seafood chowder, They use dill with the seasoning and it takes away from the seafood in the chowder. The chowder itself rates a 3.5/5 due to the dill. I think chowder with less or no dill is my preference. The area of Boston with their seafood chowder reigns supreme. The elk burger and that was good. The coffee me was better than average but the star of the show! The blueberry pie!!! Overall was a good experience. read more

We had a great visit to the 49th state brewing restaurant! There was a wait for a table so we decided to take in the scenic views on this beautiful Alaska day. The restaurant has two rooftop areas where you can enjoy the beautiful views of the harbor. We ordered and enjoyed: Baked mac and cheese with seafood: this is probably the best mac and cheese that I've ever had! I highly recommend ordering this dish if you stop in for a visit. Crab stuffed jalapenos: this a good dish if you like jalapenos. The jalapenos are stuffed with a lot of crab meat and the bacon really complimented the dish. Award-winning smoked wings: they were not lying when they stated these were award-winning wings. We enjoyed these flavorful wings and will definitely be back for more! They also have a great beer selection and helpful servers! I am so glad that we stopped in while we were in Anchorage! With a few days left in Anchorage, I just might have to stop in again for more of their beers and food. read more

Fun spot, good vibes, and excellent food! Made a reservation for Friday night at 6pm and walked into a packed waiting area. Guess these people didn't have a reservation because I was shown to my table right away! Sat upstairs and it was a very different vibe. Main level was packed with people and LOUD. Upstairs was over half empty (not enough staff to seat those people waiting for a table upstairs???) and you could hear the music from below just fine and carry on a conversation. They were playing really good 80's music with remixes I had not heard before. I love 80s music so was loving it. Went with the halibut fish and chips based on a recommendation from a friend and they were OUTSTANDING!!! Fish was fresh and moist and the batter on the fish was thin and crisp. Really nailed this dish!!! Coleslaw was good but nothing special and fries came out hot and cooked to perfection. For $0.50 more they will give you fry sauce and I liked it. Did the seafood chowder (small cup) as an appetizer and really liked it. It had clams, pieces of salmon, and other seafood goodness. This is a tough chowder to get right and they did an amazing job! I'm not a crab lover but I do love grilled cheese and this was a great spin and combination. It comes with chowder for dipping instead of the standard tomato soup which I found perfect. Fries were good but nothing special Yak Burger - this thing was huge! And although it was generally good, we found it to be just a little too "wet" meaning the juices overwhelmed the bun which made it soggy. That alone would make us personally not order it again. Was visiting a friend in Anchorage and she suggested this place. The views are fantastic and with weather permitting strongly suggest sitting on the top deck! So many great beer and drink options. Two of us opted for flights and we loved being able to pick our own. Food was the definite highlight. We decided to do a family style and ordered quite a bit to share between three of us, with plenty of left overs! Appetizers- Calamari - large and full of flavor! 10/10 Bacon wrapped jalapeños - ours did come out not very temp hot and lacked a bit on flavor for us 6/10 Crab artichoke dip - so delicious, again came out not very hot (I don't know if this was because we were on the top floor and it sat for a bit before being delivered but the potential is there 7/10 Seafood chowder - packed full of seafood and tasty! 10/10 Main dishes- Alaskan wild king Salmon 6/10 - somewhat bland but the size and portion were good for the price point Parm crusted halibut 10/10 - exceptional flavor, and the sauce it's served with makes it a great dish! Crab grilled cheese - 7/10 - good flavor but again came out not very warm which was a disappointment. It's packed full of crab Yak burger - 10/10 excellent burger! The bartender was nice and seemed knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered an aperol spritz. FINALLY!!! The first bartender in this estate to get right :-). I've loved every experience I've had at this restaurant over the years! Others must as well because there is ALWAYS a long line! The roof has the longest wait but it is worth it on a lovely Alaskan day or evening. The inside is nice and cozy. The downstairs is first come first serve. It is a bar area with loads of seating, but never seems enough at this popular restaurant! The service is always with a smile and helpful. The menu is vast and has many fun to try items on it. Everything I've ever had has been fantastic! Without exception this time was the same. They had loads to drink with many local choices and even have homemade soda. Most of the time, the term "brewpub" conjures up this idea of some good beers and some good, if unspectacular, food. 49th state definitely exceeded expectation on the food. A bit of background: my partner has developed a tough set of allergies (roughly speaking "all things cow"). So even though we're not even remotely vegan, we do keep an eye out for places that have vegan options. This place had both vegan mozzarella (for pizzas) and cheddar (for burgers). They also had some non-beef options, including elk and yak (we ordered both). Excellent and different (the elk was judged to be better than the yak, though possibly that might have been the treatment). The elk was nice and lean, with a flavor that was definitely "something else." The yak was good too, although not quite as distinctive. (Both were "messy" burgers...but that's part of the appeal). Also got the flight. Somewhat disappointing, as two of the brews I wanted to try were out (the Seward and the cider), so I ended up with the lager and the nitro. I'm not a great fan of lagers, so I'll say that it was...a lager. Similarly for the nitros: it was a nitro stout. The Belgian (golden dall) and the smok: I'm not sure I'd try either of them again (I haven't quite made up my mind about them), but no regrets about them: they were very definitely worth experiencing. The dall is described as having a bubblegum overtone...and that's 100% correct. The smok is a smoked ale. I haven't had any of these before, and jury is still out on whether I'm a fan, but again, no regrets and anything that expands the repertoire is good. read more

Before coming I had heard that you can expect a wait. Especially during summer tourist season. But 45 minutes at prime dinner time did not feel at all too long. Plenty of places to sit while we waited our turn. We were given choice of inside or outside and were seated inside which I'm glad for because weather is so unpredictable and started to drizzle. We were in the bar area for seating and it was definitely not quiet but you don't come to brewery and expect quiet dining. I had to of course try one of their seasonal sours. Tigers blood sour and it was delicious the perfect blend of sweet and sour that I enjoy. My son enjoyed their Raspberry soda. He was very happy with his selection. They had so many flavors it was hard to select. For our meal, we had two of the burgers Mt. Magnificent and the World Famous Yak Burger. The Mt. Magnificent was a beef burger with smashed potatoes, cheddar cheese, crispy onions and their blonde eagle ale bbq sauce. Wow! Was cooked to perfection and tasted great. The right amount of topping to add flavor but not too overpowering. The Yak burger was something we just had to try. Locally raised Alaskan Yak. This burger was amazing! The flavor of the meat was outstanding. Seasoned enough to enhance the flavor without being too much. This might have been the best burger I have ever had. we might come back to Alaska just to eat here!!! My son was mad we shared the burgers because it was so good ! 3% "Service Charge". Good selection of vegan/vegetarian options, service was decent, and as you would expect, great beer. We had the "Herbivore Vegan Burger" and vegan pepperoni pizza. Both were great. The vegan burger was one of the best I've ever tasted with a mix of flavors that were a joy to eat...horseradish pickles, vegan cheddar that rivaled 'real' cheese, and a pattie built with 3 types of mushrooms and sweet corn. All vegan burgers should be so tasty. It puts to shame the vegetarian/vegan burgers you find at almost any restaurant, much less a brew pub. Rare to find vegan pepperoni pizzas, and even rarer for the pepperoni to have the flavor we found at 49th State Brewing. Similar to the burger, the vegan mozzarella was very good. Despite being popular, I was surprised that my waitress didn't rush me out of my seat even though the place filled up while I was sitting there / flip side - if my waitress was a tad bit more attentive, I would've ordered dessert but didn't want to wait. There's rooftop seating if you're inclined. I ordered the elk burger which was a little messy to eat but very tasty (I think I've found my favorite burger, wish they served this back home / must say that the meat : bread ratio could be better). A visit to Anchorage and this spot was recommended for the food and the brews. The fish and chips I had were really good. Fish was dense yet flaky. Batter was good. Chips however are fries. I had three different beers, all their specialty beers, two weren't much different than other craft beers, I couldn't taste any of the notes that they suggested would be in there. The Peach Bellini flavored one, it did have a slight hint of the peach, it was impressively good. Staff however, at the bar anyway, the bartender was a bit of a jerk. Not sure if he was having a bad day or just has a chip on his shoulder, but he wasn't very responsive, kind, nor helpful. I'd point at the beer I wanted on the menu as well as state it and he looked through me like I wasn't even there. This wan't just once, it was each time I ordered a different beer to try.
