Restaurant is tiny and crowded, if you are lucky enough to get a seat at the bar be prepared to get shoved a few times as people make there way to the seating area. They don't take reservations and keep track of parties with an old school list. A little hectic and unorganized at times but worth the wait. This was our first time to 5 Burro and I'm not sure why it took us so long, especially since the hubby loves Mexican. It was a pleasant surprise. I think I was expecting it to be less than spectacular and totally caught me by surprise. The food was really good, and the service was excellent. This was really a quick in and out on the way home. We started with the Queso Fundido ($12.00): Melted Monterrey Jack cheese blended with spicy Mexican sausage, topped w/ pico de gallo and jalapeños, served w/ flour tortillas. OMG. It was so delicious. In our less calorie-minded days, we easily could have ordered another one. It was so good. Then we both had fajitas. They were so good. And, I don't say that lightly. We tend to try restaurants randomly all the time, so we were really on a Mexican kick a few months ago, and went to several very, very authentic restaurants. These were definitely on par and comparable. I had the Fajita Combo with steak, shrimp and chicken. Jayson had the Fajita steak. They really hit the spot. 5 Burro clearly also gets the drinking crowd with a dozen frozen alcoholic treats. We don't drink, but the people around us had pitchers of frozen Margaritas and Pina Coladas and a bevy of others cocktails and clearly they are crowd pleasers. Went to 5 Burro Cafe last Friday night for dinner. It was Friday, so there was a pretty decent wait. We sat at the bar while waiting and ordered a few margaritas. The bartender asked us if we wanted our rims salted, and of course we did. He brought us our drinks and the rims were unsalted. When we mentioned it, he salted some glasses, and poured our existing drinks into them. The watermelon margarita had an artificial watermelon taste to it as expected, and but it wasn't that strong. We got some guacamole as an appetizer, it was OK, nothing special. My entree was three enchiladas, I got one each of the chicken, ground beef, and steak. It came with rice, beans, guacamole, and sour cream. It was good, but not particularly memorable. The sauce that smothered the enchilada was a bit bland thought it was listed as spicy. The prices are pretty high for a hole in the wall spot in Queens. I've gotten better Mexican food in nicer restaurants in Manhattan for less. read more

So before I go into the review I just want to state some things that not only pertain to this restaurant but a lot of the restaurants that that outdoor seating. This area along Austin St is a busy area with shops & restaurants. Pre-Covid when it came to outdoor dining you were probably sitting a few inches away from another table, now Post-Covid....you still are. A lot of these restaurants have not spaced out their tables & some don't have the room to do so either (this is why some restaurants are taking up the curb so they can have dining options) but some other alternative I feel needs to be in place. How amazing to be dining at five burro Café once again. I used to live in this neighborhood and I remember coming here the very first week they opened. The food was excellent that night and I went back many times after that. I'm delighted to say that the quality of the food and drinks are still top-notch. I looked for a good chicken dish on the Chef's specialties portion of the menu, but couldn't find one. Seems the top two choices are Served for lunch only. So I opted for the skirt steak, medium rare (which it was, perfectly cooked), with black beans and yummy Spanish rice. The margaritas are just succulent and put you in the mood for good food. This is my second time coming here and as soon as I got to the door the large lady that was sitting people down was extremely rude ( later found out her name is Jessica) . She became angry when I asked her why I couldn't sit at my table when my guest was less than one minute away. I absolutely love the food at 5Burro and the only reason I'm taking a star off is because it's fairly pricey. Shrimp Quesadilla alone with no sides is $20. I feel like they're even more expensive than some legit places in the city. The shrimp quesadilla had a lot of baby shrimps that were cooked just right so there's a nice texture to the shrimp. Chicken tacos...yummy as always...lots of chicken Chicken Flautas...pulled chicken inside was juicy and not dry. A Queens staple.... Actually a NYC STAPLE. This place never lets you down. I been going for the past 10+ years and ordering the same two things. The flautas or the skirt steak and all these years it's been prepared the same EXCELLENT. the drinks are also amazing mostly the frozen margaritas and for $10 each it's a no brainer. There was excitement when 5 Burro Cafe opened for takeout during Quarantine and they have been getting slammed since. They have been good about updating their social media to keep us informed about any ordering issues or suspensions. We ordered online with a pick-up time of 45 minutes. When I arrived there were a bunch of people waiting; most practicing social distancing with a few who seemed oblivious. In actuality I waited another 30 minutes for my food to come out. You can tell the staff at 5 Burro is hustling and they are doing the best they can under these circumstances. Food was coming directly from the kitchen to the table at the door and orders were called out as they got there. They are also accepting orders at the door if you don't want to use online. Digging into the food at home, it was all delicious and hot! My experience with takeout during this quarantine has been challenging and not getting hot food, so I was happy. Plus being able to enjoy a margarita with my dinner was fab. If you are going to order, just be patient and expect to wait longer than anticipated, order early so you don't get hangry and take it out on those that are doing what they can to accommodate us. read more

I've been hearing about the 5 Burro Cafe for at least 25 years, but living half-an-hour away and having a deep dread for Queens traffic and parking, I've never been to this restaurant. Today, we had plans to meet some visiting family for lunch. They had lived in Forest Hills many years ago and were staying in nearby Flushing. Somehow, we ended up at the 5 Burro Cafe, around the corner from their old apartment. As strict vegetarians, my wife and I are very particular about the restaurants we choose. Anyone who's at least semi-serious about vegetarianism can understand that this isn't just arrogance or a false sense of superiority; we just want our food to be "clean" and free of meaty ingredients, after-tastes, etc. So when we heard someone describe 5-Burros as a "traditional" Mexican restaurant, we immediately assumed that our beans would be refried in lard, our rice doused with chicken broth, etc. I made a phone call to the place, fully expecting them to confirm my suspicion. Instead, without missing a beat, they advised me that all the makings of the dishes we usually order are totally vegetarian with regard to both ingredients and preparation, and that items like veggies are cooked separately from all the meat ingredients. We were IN! Of course, the next big question was, "OK, is this gonna SUCK?" While waiting a good 45 minutes for a table in this very small, very crowded spot, we noticed that the patrons at every table were smiling and apparently really enjoying their food. The plates were piled high with colorful, super-fresh-looking portions of guacamole, black beans, salsa, etc...just the way we like our dishes when we shell out $20 a plate (5 Burros is NOT cheap). This was looking promising. My wife and I both ordered veggie burritos. Even with a packed house, they came out within ten minutes, hot and exactly how we ordered them. Most importantly, from the very first bite, we knew we had found a new place to eat the next time we stray out of Nassau County toward the city. Everything from the rice to the beans to the wraps was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Nothing tasted like grease, pork, or chicken stock, and there was way more of everything than would have totally satisfied our appetites. Of course, because we both love food, we scraped our plates down to the metal beneath the ceramic coating. As noted above, 5 Burro Cafe is a little expensive for people like us who scoff at the price of Chipotle's $9.50 burritos, but it was obvious why the Chipotle restaurant across the street was empty on a bustling Saturday and 5 Burros was packed. The atmosphere, the staff, and the food were just phenomenal and well worth treating ourselves to. My only heads-up about this place is that our check for four people came with an 18% gratuity built-in without any notification. (Edited after my wife fessed up) Had my wife not discreetly "fixed" this issue after I had scribbled out a generous tip on the check and tucked $25 cash into the folder, I'd have given a $45 tip on a $110 meal. Instead, we left an extra $10. Restaurants, in general, need to stop doing this. This aside, I highly recommend 5 Burros Cafe for vegetarian Mexican food lovers, and I have a feeling our carnivore guests would give it a similar review for meat-eaters. read more

The food is fantastic, the ambiance is great and the service is top notch. I've gotten both the steak and shrimp fajitas and they're both absolutely spectacular. The steak is especially good since they actually cook it the way you request, which I like it medium rare. The drinks, omg. The margaritas are just so good. First l came to the restaurant with my husband at 5:25pm waited 15 minutes and l was not even at knowledge by your staff. After 15 minutes waiting l go up to the manager at that time which l think his name is Moren or something with and M. I told him l have been waiting for a table for 15 minutes and that no one has help me. First hi gives me an attitude and tell me that what l want him to do, he curses at me and gives me attitude. On top of that he tells me the wait is 40 minutes while there is table available and there is no one waiting. Now tell me how professional is that? I would really like to speak to the owner and make sure they take the proper decision on who they hired.
