This was my sixth visit to this wonderful Asian restaurant in the Montclair Shopping Center area. I brought my students as it was an opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year's. The food was excellent. The service was great. It was like being in someone's home with the owner, checking in several times and taking time to share with my students about traditions of the Chinese new years. Loved this place. Walking in the decor is really nice and classy--it feels like an upscale restaurant. Very clean and tidy too. Service was great, the waiter was kind and attentive. Water was served in a pitcher with some lemon and orange infused in it. As for food, we only got 3 dishes--tofu lettuce wrap, Buddhist Delight, and Mongolian Beef, along with dessert of banana fritters (yum). Everything was quite good. The flavors here are different than the other Chinese restaurants in the area, in a really nice refreshing way. Clearly the chef (who hails from Hong Kong) is very talented. We were all very impressed with our first visit and plan to come back again (soon) to try more food. May end up being a favorite of ours in the East Bay. Highly recommend. read more

Imagine your old friend from a midwestern college calls and says he is coming to the Bay Area with 15 hungry students and would like to meet up for dinner somewhere. On a Friday night, which is tomorrow, with no reservations. Yikes. Well, 5 Spiced Kitchen totally came through! They set us up with 2 big round tables for us. I ordered a wide variety of dishes in advance discussion with Shirleen, who was cool as a cucumber through the whole process, even when they came 30+ minutes late. Everyone thought the food was surprisingly delicious! They kept the family style dishes coming. Everyone got to try something new.... One kid had never had eggplant before (!) and one had never had shrimp before. They loved it! Service was great... efficient, kind, welcoming! I know how hard it is to deliver big orders all at the same time and they performed perfectly. Honestly, it was a great experience. Go with a group so you can explore the whole menu, there is something for everyone. P.S. Afterwards, we went up the hill for a free telescope viewing at the Chabot Space and Science Center. The place we usually order from was closed so we decided to give this restaurant a try and really liked it. We ordered the chicken chow mein, orange chicken, veggie egg rolls, and white rice and everything was very good. The orange chicken had a tiny bit of a kick to it which the grownups loved and the kids didn't mind. The noodles were a great consistency and well flavored. The egg rolls were crispy and well seasoned. This might be our new go-to. Definitely give it a try! read more

The potstickers were sooo good, you can tell they make the dough and everything from scratch. I also had the wonton soup and the hot and sour soup because it was a cold day outside, both had wonderful broths and flavor. So excited that 5 Spiced Kitchen has openned in Montclair! The food is authentic and delicious. The atmosphere is really nice too, with tall cielings, nice decor, and relaxing music. This really saddens me, as I was very hopeful, to finally have a good chinese food in our neighborhood. I ordered the basics, kitchen sink chow mein and potstickers. The potstickers were the size of pillows, undercooked in an ultra thick wrapper. You couldn't really taste the filling that was at best almost cooked, worried it was undercooked because it's pork. The chow mein was ok but not anything I would want to have again. Lots of thick nooddle with a few veggies and different meats and shrimp, mediocre at best. I was really hoping the second generation would take it to the next level. Maybe I will just wait a few months for my next visit to see how others review the food here and take another chance. read more

Very disappointing. Waited where the sign says to wait to dine in for over 5 minutes before i walked to the counter and flagged someone down. I want to love this place, but my first time there was not so good. Mongolian Beef was so so. Rice sticks that were underneath were all soggy. Double mushroom & spinach had very few mushrooms and so much raw garlic I could not eat much of it. Tried to shake/scrape the garlic off but that only worked on the mushrooms a bit. I realize it is only the first week open, but it really needs improvement with the dishes I ordered! Might give it a few weeks and try one more time. read more

If you are a duck hunter or know one and want to find a rest. that knows how to cook wild ducks well look no further .. 5 Spice Kitchen does it right. Call them and make a resv. and take the ducks to them 2 days ahead of time so they can do there magic to them before cooking. We had a duck dinner there last nite and it was superb. 'The ducks were cooked to perfection. Crisp skin on the outside and rare on the inside. Perfect period. They could not have been prepared better. They have a new oven that does it perfectly. Throw in their eggplant dish and there green beans and house fried rice for the sides and Ice cream for desert and you will have a smile on your face when you leave and will want to come back and do it again.. If wild ducks are not cooked correctly they will taste like liver if done rare and correctly they taste like filet of beef fantastic.. I used to have the Silver Palace same location do our ducks and they were great thanks to the owner Martin, well his daughter has taken over and changed the name to 5 Spice Kitchen but the wild ducks and better than ever..When you take them in make sure they are picked and cleaned and ready for the oven. You will not be disappointed. I will be back again and again wild ducks the best..... read more
