Lucas the owner really makes things right!!!!!! My movers were slightly late because of traffic which I was completely okay with; I told them to take their time because I was still sweeping up. However my storage-space-that-shall-not-be-named cancelled my reservation when I said I would be a little later than scheduled...!!! I purchased an antique letterpress that weighs 1200lbs. It was broken down into parts - the heaviest of which was 600 lbs, with the second heaviest not far behind. The parts of the press had to be moved down a flight of stairs, as the press was on the second floor of a single-apartment-style building. After having no luck in finding any moving company who would help me with the move of my press down the stairs and into a truck, I found 5 Star Moving - and thank goodness! I explained my situation to Lucas, the owner, who was very confident in his team's abilities to get the job done, and was able to schedule my move within a few days of my very strict date and time. I ended up calling him an hour before my move was scheduled, as there was a delay that would push the start time back 2.5 hours! He was totally cool about it and we were able to reschedule. A team of four gentlemen showed up early, and demonstrated professionalism, smarts, and tenacity throughout the whole process. I was beyond impressed with everyone - the team got everything done without getting hurt or damaging anything, and they got done in about half the time that we suspected. I was looking for a moving company again this year when I remembered what a disappointing experience I had with 5-star moving last year despite all the raving reviews, so I felt the need to give a very honest opinion on here. The positives: They had the lowest rates of 5 companies I contacted for my move from Sunnyvale to San Francisco, and Lucas was very communicative and helpful in answering questions so it seemed very promising. Movers were on time and mostly kind. Majority of my stuff was undamaged, but not all. The negatives: Overall, slow and not the most careful. Went over quoted hours, didn't finish reassembly of desks and couch at new place, damaged a few things. Heard a few unprofessional comments from the movers. Detailed version: I found a lot of my furniture dirty/damaged after unpacking and settling in. The damages all could have been prevented had they used furniture blankets and wraps, which Lucas said they would provide free of charge in our text exchanges. However, the movers showed up that morning with only a short roll of the plastic wrap which was only suitable for small furniture like nightstands, so all of the bigger items went unprotected. Either they made a false promise or they came unprepared. Be sure to keep a few rolls of your own masking tape handy too (don't pack it up or put it away), as they didn't have this but still went through a whole roll. The movers didn't seem all that careful, as they stacked too many things on top of the carts to save on the number of trips to/from the truck and I suspect they ended up banging into walls/corners or crushing stuff on the bottom in the process. I'd understand if they were doing this to be fast, but they still took much longer than the originally quoted 4-5 hours. There ended up being dirt marks all over my white couch, scratches on my dining table and office desk, dents in my Simple Human trash can (those things are stupid expensive), chips in my TV stand, and paint scratches on my metal bookshelves as a result. They seemed extremely slow unloading at the new place while not even being careful with my stuff. They didn't finish reassembling all my furniture at the new place cause it was already well past the originally quoted time. One of the movers was kinda bagging on the other mover by blaming him for being slow and claiming that if it were just him and one of his other buddies they'd have been done in 4 hours... this seemed really unprofessional to me that someone would be complaining about his coworker to me behind his back, but in the end I couldn't help but feel like maybe he was actually right and that it could've/should've been done faster. My roommate later told me that she overheard them guessing how much our monthly rent was and then outright asked her, which was pretty uncomfortable. This made me wonder if maybe they had just been taking advantage of how easy going I was or even knowing that I must be making decent money to be moving into a pricey place in the city. That felt really awful and was probably the worst part of all because I really didn't want to think that of them. No one wants to feel like they're being taken advantage of for their kindness or resources, so I'd heavily suggest that the movers be informed to not make these types of comments. Looking back, I wished I had just paid more for better quality movers as this ended up being a frustrating experience. In total it took them 6 hours, so the cost was only barely lower than what other companies quoted for 4, so I might have actually saved the frustration and time had I gone with the other more expensive movers (though no guarantees as I'm sure there's always the possibility of any company going over the quoted hours). Would only recommend if you're doing a small move or are particularly price conscious and aren't too concerned about some of your furniture getting damaged. read more

I've moved with other companies in the past, and they made me rent my own UHAUL, they've broken things and hid them in the truck, along with other bs. With 5 Star I had a much better experience. They had their own moving truck which saved on the cost and time of going to rent one myself. We all know moving can be hectic and a nightmare. I recently moved from my apartment in Berkeley. Unfortunately my move consisted of narrow hallways, multiple flights of stairs, heavy boxes, large furniture and difficult access to the moving truck. Not only did they move all of our household items, but a bunch of tools, including a welder, 10 x 5 work bench, a table saw and bins of other miscellaneous tools to a different location. They gave me an estimated time of 6-7 hours for my move, using 3 people( after sending them photos of all items for the move), however it took the 3 of them 11 hours instead! One worker spend a whole hour undoing a queen size bed. He dragged along during the whole time and they all included their lunch hour as part of my moving expenses! Also, they charged me $120 for the tape and the seran wrapping they use on our stuff; something that is included with all other movers I have used in past. They said they used 6 rolls of tape at $10/each tape, where I know they did not use that many and in fact we had several rolls of tape scattered around and offered it to them to use. Most of our stuff were already boxed by us and taped up. They were so slow that after their estimated time to finish was well past, I too began helping them also to get it done quicker, something I never needed to do with other moving companies. At the end they quoted me for a total of 11 hours for $2300; double the estimated time they had quoted me before the move. It was so late and tiring for us that i did not realize the 11 hours included their lunch and dinner breaks, charged to me at $200/ hr! I will not use this company ever again. Needed help loading a 3 bedroom house into a 16 ft container. Everything was super smooth from the start. First, Lucas the owner is incredibly responsive, timely and informative in answering any questions I had about my move. Constant communication through both text and email. Just really gives you confidence that his quote and understanding of the work is pretty accurate without having to come onsite to give an estimate. Lucas also confirmed a couple more times before my moving date to give me comfort there wouldn't be any issues. Worst thing that can happen is having no movers or coming at the wrong time on moving day! The scheduled crew had an emergency on the day of but Lucas pulled out an excellent backup crew at the last minute who did a fantastic job.
