Was referred to this wine shop by a friend who I thought was a bit of a wine snob until I saw his extensive vintage wine cellar at his home in Bel Air. Didn't expect him to know of any wine shops in DTLA since he's a Westside guy. 538 Wine and Spirits inside the members only California Club, down in the dungeon(basement). No visible signage but a polite guard will escort you down. It is very clean and organized. Have been in this shop a few times as they carry a good selection of specialty French wines. Particularly interested in the 2006 La Nerthe Châteauneuf du Pape, was SOLD out...tragique! During a trip to the Southern Rhône region in France, I was introduced to this wine during a wine tour of the castle. The historical connection to the popes, bishops and priests, and the vineyards vast significance to the region, and their strict controlled wine making, it's no wonder Châteauneuf du Pape is in demand. And sold out in most westside wine shops...ugh! This wine is exquisite with pizza, which I want as I watch the NCAA finals. I was helped by different people here on every visit: Lauri, Bernard and Aris are all very knowledgeable, courteous and helpful...excellent service. A hidden gem in DTLA! Discovered the store when visiting the California Club for an event, and Bernard gave me and my girlfriends samples of Dictador rum. While I'm not a rum drinker, it's perfect for my bar, and it also makes a great gift. Found out later that it was less expensive at 538 than any of the larger retailers, and with much better service. Free gift wrap, too! Been a loyal client ever since. They're open during COVID, but you have to call when you arrive to have them escort you in from the south side of the club. Wonderful location and excellent service. Call ahead and they'll hold items for you, too. read more

Hidden in the basement of the exclusive, members only California Club, 538 is open to the public as an shop devoted to rare and unique wines and spirits. A great place for a unique gift or something fun and different when having a dinner with friends or just for fun. Troy is a rockstar sommelier, plus he has unique hard to find items for bourbon, scotch and cigar aficionados. The hidden location in one of the Old School Los Angeles private clubs retains an old prohibition, Speakeasy feel. This place has been around since Prohibition and now completely redone to an amazing finish. I found some amazing Bourbon as well as fine wines Staff was expert and polite. Besides wines they stock some Cigars and Caviar as well. Wine club is cool with a new selection each month. I usually drive out to WeHo to Domaine LA for wine but because of a time crunch, I couldn't make it out to WeHo from DTLA during traffic time... but for once, THANK YOU LA TRAFFIC! I found this hidden gem!!! Bernard helped my friend and I pick a few wines for our party where we had to bring $30+ wine and conceal the wine so we cannot judge it by its packaging. Both wines that Bernard chose for us were in the $30 range and were looooooved. LOVED. LOVED by the guests. The whole process was really fun and Bernard knew so much about everything in the store. It is really a good place to go to find a curated selection of alcohol. It is really a hidden gem!!! 538 is ensconced in the ground floor of the California Club and it is open to both members and non members. It is the best wine and spirit shop in the growing residential market of downtown Los Angeles. Aside from a great selection in the store I have discovered that they can locate any wine I might want. I just place a request with Troy and the wine finds its way to the trunk of my car within a few days. Keep up the good work 538!! read more

While inside a private club, 538 has turned from a sleepy little wine store to an elegant very well stocked store opened to the general public. Just wander in through the entrance off the garage and you will be treated to one of the best selections of wines in Southern California. Wines are very reasonably priced and the staff will order anything you might want that they do not stock. The two prime staff members are both very experience sommeliers and restaurateurs and can guide you to a great selection for your dinner or tasting. They have tastings on most Tuesday nights but you should call for particulars. Don't be put off by the fact it is in a private club. They are very open and gracious to outsiders. read more

But Bernard went out of his way to locate the items for us, calling other distributors and making sure they could deliver in time.
