Stumbled upon this hidden gem behind downtown Culver on Venice -- and what a find! Milla Chocolates is a beautiful little shop offering artisanal bonbons, chocolate drinks, and other sweet treats. I ordered a black sesame chocolate drink with two bonbons: pistachio and yuzu caramel. My kid devoured the pistachio in one bite, but the yuzu caramel was absolutely divine -- rich dark chocolate balanced perfectly with fragrant, real yuzu flavor. The drink was definitely too sweet for my taste though. Needed to take home and add milk into it and actually turned it into two drinks. They also have gorgeous gift boxes, customizable assortments, and prepackaged goodies -- perfect for gifting or indulging yourself. Service was amazing. The barista was super friendly. My paper bag with my take away lunch ripped in their store and she offered a beautiful bag without me even asking. She was patient in explaining their menu and helped me picked out Chocolates that my kids would love. CHOCOLATE EROTICA!! I have heard stories of chocolate being an aphrodisiac - been around for many years and never had an, " otherworldly experience," till today!! OMG. What just happened? LOL. Took a bite: chocolate taste, a creamy, bittersweet orangy taste - I'm drooling, my head swirls, ( what In the world!). Heaven on earth ! Good quality dark chocolate with an exorbitant price tag. I rate the chocolate 4 stars and the price 1 star. I'm a devotee of artisanal chocolates and regularly consume Norman Love Confections (Fort Meyers, FL), Marie Belle (New York City), John & Kira's (Philadelphia, PA), Christopher Elbow (Kansas City, MO), Woodhouse (Napa, CA), Moonstruck (Portland, OR), Mary's Chocolate (Japan), Vosges (Chicago, IL), Neuhaus (Belgium), Pierre Marcolini (Belgium), and many, many more. Milla chocolate is good quality; I give it a solid "B" grade compared to so many other fine chocolatiers I've consumed across the U.S.A and Europe. Most artisanal chocolates are in the $2.00 - $3.00 per piece before shipping. Milla Chocolates is nearly double in price: a 9-piece assorted box is $41.00 and a bar is $20.00. That does not include the cost of shipping - luckily I live close enough to buy these in person. Bottom Line: Milla's prices are absurd for the quality and quantity. This is my first and last purchase unless they cut their prices in half. I came in right before heading across the country for Christmas, ready to spend a hefty amount on premium chocolates for my pastry chef sister. She is passionate about bon bons, is an award winning chef and very particular about her desserts so I wanted to impress her, and I had heard great things about Milla. When I entered the shop I was excited to talk to the employees about what their offerings were, which is why I did not purchase online, instead looking for a personalized experience. The woman who was working the counter was immediately cold and unfriendly. I asked a question, the store was empty, and she walked OUT of the main room and into the back while I was in the middle of my sentence. I felt like I was going crazy. I did witness another employee assist a guest that came in behind me and he was much more friendly. My entire interaction with her continued to feel like I was such a nuisance for being in the store at all. This experience left such a sour taste in my mouth that I won't be returning. Which sucks because the chocolates were phenomenal and my sister loved them. I got a 24 piece box, a few bars, and some of the sesame caramels. She really loved them all but my interaction put a big damper on the value. I will search for somewhere else next time. read more

I have a huge sweet tooth, especially for chocolate. Even better if it's high-quality chocolate. I swear by generic Godiva chocolates, but every now and then I come across a boutique chocolatier that just blows my mind. Milla Chocolates is no exception. My partner gifted me a box of six for Valentine's Day (so I didn't pay and have no idea how much they cost, haha), and I loved how elegant the packaging was-- all black, minimalistic, but classy. I tried them all in one sitting, and man was I in heaven: besides being really good, 55-60% cacao chocolates, they also came in unique flavors. My ranking: 6) Champagne: could not taste the champagne whatsoever. A disappointment. 5) Raspberry: sweet and fruity, but not a standout: I've had similar chocolates with Godiva before. 4) Hazelnut: rich and nutty, with a bit of grittiness from the unprocessed hazelnut bits (which I love). But again, not a standout as I've had similar with Godiva. 3) Earl grey: one of the most-unique flavors and absolutely delicious. Intense black, floral tea flavor, its bitterness meshing perfectly with the sweet chocolate. A must-get for anyone. 2) Cardamom: another unique flavor-- deep, earthy, and spiced, it was like eating something chai-flavored. Also a must-get! 1) Passionfruit: WOW! Absolutely bursting with fruitiness, growing and growing the more it melts on your tongue. My favorite of them all. We came in to kill some time before our museum visit across the street. They sell Parisian chocolates and coffee drinks here. We had espresso and cold brew, both were tasty. I was lucky enough to be sent delicious chocolates from the Easter bunny herself from this divine boutique. They were delivered with Care in a temperature controlled box which is very important obviously if you are sending anything edible or anything that will expire. The dark chocolate was exceptional and transported me back to Paris. I thought that nothing compared to Maison de Chocolate but Milla is definitely competition for that established Parisian brand. I highly recommend their delivery service and look forward to visiting the shop in person I am a clinically diagnosed chocoholic and I give this shop an A+ five stars. read more

Chocolates here are DELICIOUS, but like wayyyyyyyy overpriced. Also the ice hot chocolate was really good but it took maybe 20 minutes to get it so maybe not worth the wait. Lastly, I would encourage them to make more gifting box/size options. Currently there are so few options that it makes it hard to find the right gift for the right price point. Best chocolate store in LA. Everything here is mindblowing, from the chocolate bars to the truffles and finally the store design. I got my mom the Tahini chocolate bar and she absolutely loved it. It was the kind of bar that she ate one square a day from because it was so satisfying to the palate that she didn't need to eat the whole thing in one sitting. I got a small box of 6 chocolate truffles and they were amazing. The champagne one was especially delicious. You can't go wrong with any of these. Chocolate and coffee. What a delightful experience. Everything in here is so elegant and their chocolate is crafted with detail and care. In the front there is a nice display of ready to sell products and the chocolate case where you can sample and choose. The back is the kitchen where they make the chocolates there. They offered samples and the barista was very attentive. I had the coffee and bonbons for ~$9. You get your pick of any of the coffee items (I got cappuccino - it was very good, not bitter at all) and two bonbons (black sesame caramel and smoky scotch). The selections are very unique and I appreciated the subtle complexity of the flavors with the chocolate! Would definitely come back again. Only thing I wish they had is a couple of chairs or stools. The interior is small, so I understand they don't have much space for people to hang out there all day. It would have been much more enjoyable experience to savor my coffee and chocolates sitting down rather than standing at the counter. read more

Sat, 5/22/2021 4 1/2 Stars Milla Chocolates x Gregory Doyen Collaboration. This was an exclusive collab and had to be ordered via Milla Chocolates website. I have been following Chef Doyen for a few months now on IG and was super excited for this exclusive collaboration! Ordered: 3 Yuzu Tarts with 6 Piece Bon Bon Box YUZU TART First thing I remember was the fluffy marshmallow! This was absolutely pillowy lovely and dreamy. I would have loved to have eaten them separately. Then the next layer is the light refreshing taste of yuzu. It was a beautiful yuzu cream. I could have just had that and the marshmallow and call it a day! The center was this citrus bomb that bursts in your mouth! A citrus lemony coulis which was a very sharp citrus lemony tangy bomb that bursts in your mouth. Then layer beneath this citrus bomb was a yuzu custard - now that is where it got slightly unsettling. The yuzu custard had a strong eggy smell and flavor. Also it was very very sweet, which overpowered the whole yuzu tart. When you take the full bite of all the layers together, it tastes eggy because of that one layer of yuzu custard. How unfortunate! Because I tasted all of the tart elements separately and everything else was done so well! The yuzu custard was what ruined my experience of this beautifully crafted yuzu tart! Mind you, these were costly purchases, so if I'm disappointed about this whole yuzu tart experience, then I will say it. :) Below the yuzu custard was a hazelnut layer. It was a sweet grainy texture of ground up hazelnuts. Not sure what else was in it, it tasted a bit like nutty shortbread, but with hazelnut flavor. Then the bottom was the golden crust of the tart. It was still crunchy inspite of all these elements in one small tart shell. They packaged it well in a black box with GD labeled on it. The box was wide enough and high enough to protect the yuzu tarts from being smushed. It held up well in the car ride. Overall, I'm happy I got the chance to try this dessert! YUZU CHOCOLATE BON BONS Lightly crisppy hazelnut praline on the bottom, middle layer of the yuzu ganache filling enrobed in dark chocolate. Beautifully balanced flavors of yuzu and chocolate. One flavor did not overpower the other. There was no power struggle here, although yuzu was the star. Thanks Milla Chocolates and Chef Doyen for bringing this collab to us! Hope to see more collabs in the future! HAZELNUT PRALINÉ BAR WITH TURKISH COFFEE Delicious! This is Milla's signature hazelnut praline, so if you've tried any of their other praline-filled chocolates, this is exactly that. Sooo good! The coffee and dark chocolate was not overpowering and well balanced. CANDIED BLOOD ORANGE BAR I really wanted to get the Chocolate Covered Orange Chips, but it is always always sold out! So I got the candied blood orange bar. It was good. Dark chocolate with blood orange chips were tasty, however this was a thicker chocolate bar, but it's probably not the same as eating a blood orange chip dipped in chocolate. read more

So. Freaking. Good. The ultimate move is to get a cold brew (and 2 bonbons) here while you wait for your breakfast burrito next door at Cervateca. The cold brew is strong and chocolatey on its own, but paired with 2 of their artisan bonbons (such a great deal!) ooooooo, the coffee goes to the next level. You might be saying "okay, it's chocolate...what's the big deal?" Milla is the big deal! Just try the sesame caramel or the hazelnut praline chocolate bar, you'll see. You'll taste the care and craft. Creamy and dreamy and unique flavor combos and textures. Gorgeous shop with beautiful displays of chocolate and coffee. But more importantly absolutely delicious chocolates and coffee! I've often walked or driven past the shop but must have missed opening hours (9-6 daily) Today I excitedly saw chairs and a sign outside and the owner lured us in with a wave. I was a bit intimidated because of how luxurious the shop looked but the prices were very fair, especially given the outstanding quality. We shared: Black sesame ice hot chocolate $6.50 Americano + 2 chocolates (chocolate and coffee pairing) $9.50 The sesame drink is a absolute must have. Worth every penny. For the unfamiliar, black sesame paste is often used in Asian desserts and has a mild earthy peanut buttery taste with a little more bitterness (kind of like matcha's slight bitterness). The combination of sesame and chocolate resulted in a perfectly smooth and creamy yet refreshing drink that was not too sweet! The americano was very smooth, no sourness or bitterness. I think they just have used good beans. The espresso machine looked very fancy as well, maybe that was it? An americano is $3.50 without the chocolate pairing and I think worth it given how smooth and fresh tasting it was. On to the chocolates! We tried cardamom and pistachio praline, which the employee said were two of his favorites. Cardamom had a silky sumptuous filling. I liked it a lot and would choose it again! Pistachio praline was rich with a mild natural pistachio flavor. Would have liked something a bit stronger tasting (but I had just woken up with a hangover so maybe that was my problem). The employees gave us a sample of hazelnut praline which was very good and has a hint of crunch to offset the creaminess. I'd choose that one over pistachio. I stumbled upon Milla in their infancy on Instagram, instantly adored their luxe, but minimalist aesthetic, and have been following them ever since. I had no intention of going to LA any time soon, so it was a great surprise, and one of my first planned places to visit, once I nailed dates down for my trip a few weeks back They open at 8am, and as a dedicated chocoholic, I am thrilled that Milla understands and respect one's potential need for treats that early in the day. Located in Culver City, they are enough outside the bustle of LA to allow street parking with ease, and after navigating those busy city streets the day prior, this made me inordinately happy. Now, can we talk about their branding? It is absolute perfection: All dark and gold, modern, and cool af. This is mirrored in the confections themselves, along with their gorgeous store. When we entered, we found ourselves in this dreamy space with rock BLASTING out of the speakers. While I loved the juxtaposition of that style of music with a boutique chocolatier, it was so loud I couldn't even hear the fellow assisting me at times. While a minor annoyance, he was very kind, and I wont allow even real challenges to prevent me from chocolate, so I pressed on. There is a whole wall of beautifully displayed dragée nuts: mesquite pistachios, Turkish coffee hazelnuts, raspberry almonds, and more. Also caramels, candied fruits, and some chocolate bars, and though I wish I'd paused to consider those delights (they serve various coffees, too!), I had eyes only for the cased bon-bons. Displayed beautifully on marble and dark wood, it is no wonder they arrested my attention so! They can be boxed for gift giving, but I just selected a few and had them bagged as they were for myself. Flavors, while not entirely traditional, are not too crazy either. My favorites were as follows: Kir royale-Dusky dark and slightly fruity. Black sesame-AMAZING and my absolute favorite. This tasted like a nut brittle, but with the luscious smooth texture of a truffle. As a bonus, the filling is almost black, and super cool looking! Manhattan-Stunningly shaped, while maintaining minimalist simplicity, this had enough of a whiskey flavor without being overpowering. I swear I got a note of bitters somewhere in there, and the ganache is uber smooth. Bergamot-Again, smoothy smooth chocolate ganache, this time with that distinct florally citrus flavor of bergamot. Perfectly tempered shell. Unnamed coconut chocolate-This was behind the other chocolates with no tag, so it may have been a seasonal offering or some sort of special, but DANG. A lumpy, bumpy little unassuming square, I adored the combination of crispy bits of coconut and Nutella-esque flavor. Torrone- Less sweet than similar confections I've had elsewhere, nut heavy, with an emphasis on pistachio. Chocolates are priced at $3 each, dragée nuts (available in either a plain tube (and larger quantity) or darling Weck-style jar) are $14, as are the chocolate bars. This is in line with similar chocolatiers. I checked out like ten chocolate shops on this trip, and Milla was one of the top ones. Absolutely worth seeking out. read more

I was shooketh! Beautiful, dark and elegant store front that reminds me of a museum. Chocolate and coffee curators at the ready to divulge their wisdom and expertise over a small cup of Joe. We live in America where bigger is better but this place has a different view on things and I prefer their take. Refined, small, pure and quality. These are purists in the most elevated sense of the word. No pretense except what you carry with you. If the smells don't beckon you in and entice you to stay, the decadent samples will. They had me at first swallow. I ordered the cap with mocha upon a suggestion from a devout patron and I was so enamored; I had to go back to thank Doug, my thoughtful coffee and chocolate curator. I don't know what magic and blessings they put in their drinks but I'm sated from an 8 oz and less is definitely MORE. If you are into the big chains than you might misinterpret the wholesome flavors and nuances of Mills's. This is for the person with discriminating tastes and textures who knows there is more offerings in this solemn stores than all the Starbucks combined. This was such a delightful treat for myself. The packaging shows great attention to detail. Clearly individually wrapped by hand in a sturdy gold foil. The "bomb" for me was the Candied Valencia Orange bar! This is a thicker bar of organic dark chocolate thoughtfully inlaid with thin slices of valencia oranges. Wow! It is beautifully handcrafted and packaged in its own sealed enclosure. The pistachio bonbon and the black sesame chocolate bar I tasted were just AMAZING. The chocolate bar was very impressive as it wasn't just a 'hint' of black sesame, but full of rich black sesame creme.. which melted my mouth... Live 40 miles away but will come often to get more.
