5ive Steak was my favorite all summer; every week I ate here, mostly downing a superbly delicious hangar steak with chimichurri or skirt steak, sometimes opting for the truffle burger and truffle fries, tuna burger or super thick bacon. The burgers are succulently moist. The tuna burger should be ordered well done, however; it's a gross mess when medium rare. This place was on the food channel for a reason. There are several adjacent restaurants, the tapas bar and aeronuevo but 5ive Steak reigns supreme, the ideal stop of a business traveler. I like sitting outside to watch the hustle and bustle in the airy, bright white 1960s meets 2001 A Space Odyssey Jet Blue terminal of awesomeness. You can even see the TVs with a montage of black and white movies playing at AeroNuevo, probably an Audrey Hepburn flick, Roman Holiday almost on loop. The service is pretty good, mostly hands off (but good at refilling water) but will work with your flight schedule. The drink list is very creative, check it out for ideas if anything. I stick with the giant bottle of Natura sparkling water when traveling; hydrating frequently. The prices are airport and New York absolutely reasonable. Try the Delta terminal just next door for double prices for BS like Nachos and then try to fight and even get a seat at the bar; I waited 2 hours last time. I try to take any layovers at JFK, as the JetBlue terminal is fantastic. I'd been meaning to take the time and stop into 5iveSteak and finally managed to do so in between a hop from Florida and Maine. I thought the wine list was very good, and the Shiraz (Shoofly) was really smooth. Service was great - immediately present, in fact - though I did sit at the bar which tends to help. The hanger steak, ordered medium, was a bit charred on the outside: not terrible, but not great. I was a bit underwhelmed. The truffle fries were pretty delicious, however. Top notch. In all, it's average. I think I expected more of it, but certainly above average for airport fare. I'm giving it three stars, but it's a clear four stars on the "airport scale". A knock: I watch a staff member replace napkins and silverware... but not the place mats they rest on. Not cool. read more

Alright for airport food and drinks during a three-hour layover. Pricey, but to be expected. We both had a burger and fries. Burger was ok quality - a little gristly and overcooked, but I liked the smoked Gouda and chipotle mayo on mine. The fries were of the frozen variety and tasted a little freezer burnt. The funny thing about the food court at Terminal 5 in JFK International Airport is that you won't find any junk food places. There is a cafeteria and a smattering of nice trendy places complete with a "patio". I really enjoyed 5iveSteaks when I had connecting flights on my way to a vacation in the sun. I had the Philly cheese steak which was served with a side of crisp potato chips. I decided to stop in again on the return trip. I had the South Side burger. It is topped with coleslaw, cheese steak, American cheese, lettuce and tomato. Make sure you have plenty of time to make your connecting flight because the wait staff will let you sit. Average food at best, and since there were only about 5 tables with people in them - the service was excellent. Not sure how it would have been given more tables - maybe they know this and schedule more servers during those busy times. Ordered the 5ivesteak burger (cheese adds $2!), and a couple of side dishes. The burger was unevenly cooked - my first couple of bites were well done, while the last few were the medium temperature that I requested. It was nice and juicy though, which helped quite a bit - though a little bland. The bun wasn't fresh - but it wasn't bad either - could have done with a little bit of toasting. Fries were a little soggy, and felt a little bit like they had sat in the window for a bit. A little bland (sense a theme here?), may have been better had they been fresh and cooked a little longer. I also ordered the brussels sprouts and mac&cheese (no judgement - I wanted to try a couple things!). Sprouts were bland and unevenly cooked, some were cold, and they all needed a little bit of seasoning (salt & pepper never hurt). Unlike some of the other reviews, I actually enjoyed the mac & cheese. It was very creamy - and though it seemed to be a mix of real and powdered cheese, it was seasoned appropriately, and the mac wasn't super overcooked (which seemed to me to mean that it was relatively freshly boiled. Service was good, but then again I was essentially the only person there, makes it a lot easier to do well - and 90% of the tables were empty. Sides were over-priced, burger and fries was slightly high, given what it was. But, it's an airport, and airport food is always way over-priced. If it were a standalone restaurant it would probably get a worse review - but as it stands it was just average. read more

The waitstaff was helpful and quick, but even that cannot make up for the terrible breakfast. The farmers omlet appeared to have been filled from a compost bucket. An omlet with lettuce, tomato, Brussels sprouts, turkey bacon and some brown Ooze. The Eggs Norwegian was okay, except for the solid paprika hollandaise sauce. See the photo, that is my finger AFTER pressing it into the sauce. Notice how it came back completely clean and dry? Not a sauce, more like armor. This place is not well run. You couldn't sit inside because the staff member had not arrived to work. Ok. Sat outside and then the space was empty but they put someone right next to me with their back to me- they had the whole place!! The check was wrong with an additional alcohol charge. When it got corrected I asked for a receipt of proof I had only been charged once. Melissa just said that's how this works- abrupt. No apology just blamed it on the system. It's a freaking restaurant in an airport. So I don't know what your expectations are honestly. I will say, it's pretty good stuff. We got to the airport a little early, and in a rare circumstance, my wife was craving a burger. That never happens, so I had to take advantage of this miraculous opportunity and get some burgers. We stopped here. We got and shared the chipotle burger. The burger was delicious. So were the fries. The service was just fine, realistically, no complaints. You're still in an airport, so it's noisy, and bustling, and everyone is in a rush. But considering all that, this place isn't bad. There aren't too many good airport options and for once, I wish they had a few chain restaurants in there versus all of these other restaurants. We looked at the menus for all the other places before settling for burgers at 5ive Steak. We sat down and ordered just in time because the restaurant got slammed and the waitress was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. But I added an extra star for her because her service was still pretty good even though it got hectic. I even saw her running across the way to grab sushi from Deep Blue for one of the tables (I guess that's where the sushi from the menu comes from). My burger was a little overcooked, but still juicy so I ate it. I added the truffle option for my french fries, which was an additional $3. They were okay.. pretty soggy and not crispy at all. My friend got the bison burger, which was very undercooked. But we were so hungry, she couldn't wait for it to be reheated, so she picked out the parts that were too rare for her. DELYSHOUS CHALLENGE OF THE DAY: Where to eat and enjoy a pre-boarding glass of wine at the airport to officially kick off your travels? You've no idea how excited I was when high style dining appeared at JFK Terminal 5! And no trip is official in my travel log until a glass of wine has been poured. I've been on a mission to try all the restaurants there but have to admit I've defaulted to 5ive Steak almost every time. Why? Because they have an extensive wine list, comfortable bar/seating, and a menu that doesn't look too complicated or time consuming. I'm not afraid to take chances but airport food is still underwhelmingly airport food afterall. For menu decisions, I usually stick with the beef or pork sliders and a salad here - can't mess that up and relatively easy on the stomach when you're in high elevations. Service can be slow, however, so to speed things up, be sure to let your server know how much time you have, order everything together and ask for your check upfront.
