Poor service. Came here with a deal from Groupon yesterday and was turned away because I didn't make an appointment. After I bought the Groupon deal on Sunday, I read the instructions, which did say I need to make an appointment. However, when I went on the website to see if this place has an online appointment system, I saw on the front page that no appointment is needed. As a result, I just decided to stop by the next day. When I arrived at their garage, I saw that there was not a single car being serviced and no customers. I approached the guy at the desk and showed him my Groupon deal, to which he turned me away since I didn't make an appointment. I told him when is the earliest I could make an appointment and he told me tomorrow. I asked him if we can just do it now since I am already here and there's no one here. He said I could if I paid $40, twice the amount of the Groupon deal. In frustration, I made an appointment at 2pm the next day and left. On the way out, I emailed Groupon about this and the customer service gave me a refund. I took my business elsewhere since this area has more than a dozen smog check places. In fact, I ended up paying less for the same service right down the street! A smart and understanding service person would've said no problem and dealt with the issue. read more

I've been getting my now-elderly Subaru smogged here for going on a decade, maybe four or so tests since I acquired the car (used). They're *always* courteous, professional, quick, and fairly-priced. For this morning's test, I arrived close to the start of the day, following a short drive that included a few miles on the freeway to make sure the old beast was warmed up. I pulled in, and no one else was ahead of me (I had not made an appointment). Cutting to the chase: it was about twenty minutes from checking in to paying the bill, barely time to walk a couple blocks to the recently-renamed Caffe Trieste, get a coffee, and walk back. I went to 7 Days A Week on a rainy Sunday. I didn't realize that I had completely forgotten my wallet until it was time to pay. Fortunately they have a nice little waiting room and I chilled out there until my friend brought my wallet from home. The guys working there were nice enough and said that I could have driven off, got my wallet and just come back to pay. Talk about trusting. It's a top notch place to go. read more

And like everyone else said, it was fast, friendly and had free soda and snacks in the waiting room. $59 is a bit steep for smog imo, but everywhere in Berkeley seems to be a rip off for smog so may as well go to a nice place. The BEST place to take your car for a smog test. Amazingly CLEAN, extremely FRIENDLY. The owner, Robert, makes the experience of waiting as pleasant and quick as possible. Waiting room is neat, organized (just like the test area), with good magazines, wi-fi, complimentary drinks and snacks. Had a wonderful conversation with Robert about art, museums, owning a business, etc. My only regret is that I don't have an excuse to go there more often. I've come here for over 10 years, always great but this time was beyond unbelievable. I Called at 5:15pm asked the guy if I got there in 15 mins could he still do my smog. He said yes, I'll do it. So I got on the road, hit a few red lights but got there in 20. He blocked the garage when I drove up, I said are you going to let me in? he said, "you said 15 mins"., I said " there was some traffic, how long does it take?", he said "15 minutes", I said "ok we have 25 minutes," He then said we'll you can understand a man wants to go home after a long day", I said "I do, but you told me to come, and I am here", He then told me he has paperwork to do. Then closed the garage, got in his car, locked the gate and pulled away 20 minutes before closing time. SERIOUSLY?!!, you tell someone you'll do their smog but because they were 5 minutes later you lock them out, and leave early?!!!! I will never come here again. read more

First time I got a smog check and it was an easy and pleasant experience =) I got there before they opened and was a bit confused because the building next door is out of business/for lease. But don't worry this place won't be out of business any time soon. I was served right away since I was the 2nd person there. The guy was friendly but maybe not the most engaging. But whatever he told me everything I needed to know. With one guy working and another customer in front of me, I waited a total of 40min. But my actual test itself only took 5 min! Super fast! Last week my old Toyota Tercel failed its smog test so Robert the owner, called my mechanic, drove my car to his shop and discussed the reason it failed with him. To make a long story very short, the car passed on the second try and Robert waived the retest fee. I have never experienced such great customer service anywhere and have to echo the remarks of another Yelper, I wish they did more than smog checks. I will miss seeing them in the two years between checks and may just have to stop by to have tea on their deck. read more

Had to get an oil change quick before my registration is due and before I needed to leave out of the country for a while. This place is open on Sunday, the only day I had time to do a smog check. Once I pulled up, I was greeted promptly and had a quote in my hand in a few moments. Mentioned I found the place on Yelp and got $20 off. They told me they would be done in half hour or maybe a bit sooner. Went to the waiting room, which was very well maintained and clean. i have had issues in the past getting my VW vanagon to pass smog (despite clean emissions) due to technicians unfamiliar with the procedures required for older vehicles with non-standard powertrains. the guys here did the test right and i passed on the first try. if you are a customer of the bus lab they will give you a small discount. read more

You have to come here! Extremely friendly, worth the drive wherever you are. I drove up expecting a cold chair and white walls waiting for the service to be over and it was nothing like that. I was greeted with smiles and was told to help myself to the sodas in the fridge. The lobby was painted a cozy blue with plants all over and desks, chairs and internet to help myself. I was out of there in 10 minutes at the most which didn't even seem that long. They gave me a handout to help me with the process of getting my car registered and it was better than i ever expected. I have to admit I was a little averse to the reviews for this smog place. I guess I was skeptical to how much better customer service could differ from that of other smog check businesses. I was wrong to doubt them though, because this was by far the easiest experience of my day. Talk about no worries. I drove up and they came right to my truck, told me it would be about 15 minutes, I went on a walk with my companion, came back and it was done. You can hang out inside or out, plus they send the smog report to DMV for you. Seriously this place is good. read more

This places is crazy awesome!! I just stumbled across this on yelp a few months ago when looking for a test only site. They were super friendly and fast. I waited less than 10 mins which kinda bummed me out because I wasn't able to enjoy being on facebook on their free internet terminals. I was able to drink a free diet coke and eat a package of free crackers (the orange ones with peanut butter inside that I loved as a kid). They also have a boxing area, picnic area, weights if you wanna work out and other crazy random stuff. The $20 savings was another bonus!! read more

I promised myself that if I could get my cranky Suzuki with the ever present illuminated dummy lights to pass smog, then hot damn, the wizard who made it happen would force me to open a Yelp account and extol his or her virtues! And alas, here we are! Of course, on first try little Suzi did not want to comply, and she failed the test. 'Never fear!' I was assured by the gentlest man who was helping me, while he manually turned the light off, then sent me on a quick trip down the freeway 2 exits and back again to reset. Hooked her up and ta-da! She passed! Another lovely attendant there handled all the paper work and even submitted to DMV for me, so all I had to do was show up and enjoy their tea and cookies in the waiting room which is cheerfully decorated akin to the inside of a tree house with free Internet access. Seriously the nicest people I have ever encountered in an establishment having anything to do with vehicles at all. read more

I left work early to come here on a weekday afternoon, and was in and out in 15 minutes. My car passed, so I didn't have to take advantage of the free re-test. Highly recommend this place! I was in and out in less than 15 minutes! The waiting room is phenomenal: two computers with internet, lots of magazines to peruse, coffee/tea/snacks to eat, and comfy chairs to sit in while you wait. The service is fantastic. And like all other yelp reviews of this place, mention yelp or print out the coupon from their website and you save 20 bucks. No fuss, no uncomfortable wait. These guys even have a small little weightlifting area set up in the garage part. As if they have time to spare for working out when working! Great, great spot. Not only is Steven, the really cool manager who dealt with me, an easy going, straight talking, no BS, really kind, all around swell kind of guy, but they have FREE INTERNET and SNACKS! Plus not one but TWO punching bags! I would do all of my business here if they did other kind of business (except buy bread because I don't think anyone will ever make bread as well as the folks at Acme). Take your Vanagon here for the smog test!!! Other vehicles are fine, too I just say that because alot of testing facilities have no idea what the heck a Vanagon is:) They are a star certified smog test center and they see about 3-6 Vanagons a day so they are very familiar with them. This place is "Old school with a little bit of awesomeness." Just finished getting my car smog certified. Took about 40 minutes total. I took my car here two years ago and it's still the same place. The guys here are super friendly, courteous, accommodating and reliably fast (I did request they put in a bed for those sleepy early riser customers!) . Didn't expect top notch customer service here on San Pablo Avenue (yea, we locals know what I'm talking 'bout) but looks can surely be deceiving. read more

I came here a few yrs ago and was impressed, well had to do smog again and came back, still impressed. We were the first ones there before they were ready to open but scott let us in to get settled (we had a toddler with us), he explained some things and then the whole thing went really fast. I mentioned getting 20% off for mentioning yelp it was no problem at all and I saved money. They had a computer there and snacks so you don't get bored, even a nice seating area outside where the plants and flowers look well cared for. At checkout scott explained to wait a hr or two if I need to reg my car online since the smog takes a bit to go through. I really appreciated that too. I noticed dog treats and tootsie rolls by checkout, such a nice touch. So this place and scotts easy going quick and explanatory service made me a happy customer! I will only come back here! read more
