The difference with Sunset Foods is that they offer a lot of options, more high end, than the cheaper larger competitors. What you'll find at Sunset are departments with friendly and helpful staff. management that cares about its customers, and people willing to help at every turn of the store. Sure, I know I'm paying more for the same food and produce I can get elsewhere cheaper, but the quality is better at Sunset and the produce tends to last longer. I love the fact that as you bring your cart to pay, the management is there to guide you to an available cashier or a short line and then they empty your cart onto the belt. They help you to your car and even load your groceries in your trunk if you need the help. There are no other stores in our area (that I'm aware of) that have such great customer service. Lastly, one of the best services they have is that if they don't have an item you're looking for, you can let them know at customer service and they will get it in stock for you. Their customer service is unparalleled especially in how they go above and beyond to help you in your shopping experience.

But today, that plan was deliciously derailed. I had every intention of skipping the produce but ended up frozen in my tracks. There it was. Fresh coconut chunks. Whole tamarind pods, not paste but the real deal. Aloe. Yucca. Chinese melons. And even red-flesh dragon fruit. The kind that makes your smoothie look like it came from a fairy tale. Normally, I plan a separate pilgrimage to Jongboo, H Mart, or Seoul Market for these ingredients. Reviews for those are coming, I promise. But this was unexpected magic in a mainstream aisle. I have spent a lot of time in Asia for work and completely fell in love with the food. My husband and kids are on board, so our kitchen is a happy rotation of Korean BBQ, Japanese curry, Singapore noodles, and hot pot. And this Whole Foods just made that rotation easier.
